POPSUGAR Must Have Box: January 2016

January2016POPSUGAR02

Finally, to wrap-up my subscription service review posts for the month of January is my personal favorite- my POPSUGAR Must-Have Box! I’ve only been a member of this service since last Summer- but I have yet to receive anything I didn’t really love- and the value of the items that are included always surpasses the cost of the box (and shipping & handling) each month. More than that, the variety of the assorted products is always really unique and interesting- ranging anywhere from food, beauty, books, tech, and home decor- among other things.

I had received the outline of January’s inspirations/theme a while back- and was pretty excited to see what was inside the actual box since I’m very much all about that New Year renewal/rejuvenation thing. To kick off 2016, POPSUGAR turned to RENEWAL, ORGANIZATION, DETOX, NEW YEAR, and HEALTHY HABITS for their inspiration with putting the assortment of products together.

Let’s take a look and what I received!

January2016POPSUGAR03

To kick off the ‘ORGANIZATION’ aspect of January’s POPSUGAR box, I was really happy to receive this beautiful 2016 planner from Blue Sky. I have a small planner I keep in my purse to jot down appointments or reminders (and it was recently featured in my ‘January Hits List’ post!)– but this one is very detailed and designed specifically to meet and maintain both short-term and long-term goals. I’ll be keeping this at my desk at work for motivation!

I was also sent a copy of Maria Kondo (a bestselling author and cleaning consultant)‘s manual on tidying up, ‘Spark Joy’. Although I’ve flipped through the book, I have yet to fully implement it’s teachings as of yet- although I plan to in the coming days after I get home from work! I want a spotless, organized home!

January2016POPSUGAR04

January2016POPSUGAR05

I was so, so thrilled to receive this set of body washes from Not Soap, Radio in this month’s box. Each decently-sized bottle has a different fragrance, infused with different extracts to illicit a range of emotions/feelings- and they all smell SO good. These are perfect for travel, too- since they’re not too big to pack and not too small where they’ll get lost easily in the shuffle of everything. They come in a handy, clear zip-pouch, as well- which makes keeping track of them all a little bit easier.

January2016POPSUGAR06

Sheet masks are all the rage right now, and I am shamelessly and helplessly aboard that bandwagon. I love them- and there’s nothing that makes me feel more relaxed than taking off my makeup after a long day of work and resting a sheet mask over my face while I kick back in my bed or on my couch in my fleece pajamas and let it work it’s magic on my skin.

It’s nice to see POPSUGAR keeping the trend alive and well by sending a trio of five-minute sheet masks from Patchology in January’s Must Have boxes- each one made to target a different skin concern. I’ll definitely be using these up in no time at all!

January2016POPSUGAR07

I was actually a bit surprised to see a simple tube of chap stick in a POPSUGAR box- but I’ll never say no to it since Winter is awful on my skin/hair/lips. This new age-defying formula is vanilla-scented and is loaded with argan oil to help repair my lips from current damage and protect them from further dryness/peeling/cracking. I’ll take it and I won’t complain about it.

January2016POPSUGAR08

Priced at $40, this pebble-speckled storage bin from Pehr Designs is officially the most expensive item included in January’s Must Have box. I like the colors of this bin, since they match pretty much anything in my home- and despite how compact it looks in the packaging all folded up- this bin can hold a LOT of stuff! I’ve been using this to keep my hats and gloves in one place so I’m not left scrambling before I leave for work in the morning- and it’s definitely come in handy!

January2016POPSUGAR09

I don’t know how many of you have ever tried Project 7 Gum– but it’s pretty wild. It comes in a variety of off-the-wall-flavors, all of which taste exactly like they’re described (I recently had the birthday cake flavored gum and it blew my mind how spot-on it was to tasting like actual vanilla cake)– so to receive a packet of one of the newer taste tests- sno-cone- was fun. I’m still searching for the kettle corn popcorn-flavored Gum- but this’ll do ’til then!

Also, Project 7 does some serious charity work across the board- so it’s nice that POPSUGAR is helping get their name out there to their subscribers and beyond so more people can get interested and support their causes. You can check out Project 7’s website for more information on their partnerships and charitable contributions.

January2016POPSUGAR010

Finally, this month’s coupon (the unique code was edited out so I could post this online!) was for 25% off any order from Pehr Designs- the company who created the storage bin shown above. I actually think I’ll be ordering a few more bins to place around the other rooms in my home, so this will come in handy when I sit down to make the purchase! It was nice of POPSUGAR to include this.

All in all, I liked January’s Must Have box very much. The chapstick and the gum threw me off a little- if only because they were small compared to everything else in the box and nearly got misplaced for a second during my opening of everything- but I thought the composition of items was well thought-out and interesting. I’ve already been getting a lot of use out of most of the things I received, and I can’t wait to start the ‘Spark Joy’ book!

I’m not sure what February’s theme/inspiration will be just yet- since those spoilers usually arrive in my inbox during the second or third week of the month- but I’m suspecting it will be something Valentine’s Day-related. Chocolate, maybe? (Hopefully.)

I’ll just have to wait and see.

Until next month’s unboxings- that’s it for my January subscription service reviews!

Loot Crate: January 2016.

Comments 3 Standard

LootCrateJanuary201601

Next up in this week’s wrap-up of my January subscription services is my 2nd favorite company- Loot Crate. For those who need a refresher, Loot Crate is a monthly subscription box service that sends out different “nerdy” and geek-centic items for gamers/comic book fans/cult classic enthusiasts/etc. centered around the designated theme for the month (for example, past months’ themes have included but were not limited to “Villains”, “Combat”, and “Horror” just to name a few.) Items can range anywhere from toys to t-shirts, accessories to books. You never really know what you’re going to get until it arrives at your door!

January’s theme, to coincide with the recent limited-episode reboot of ‘The X-Files’ and new trailer for ‘Independence Day II’ (WHERE IS WILL SMITH?!) was ‘INVASION”. Now, having openly admitted my fear of all things outer space (‘Gravity’ was essentially a horror movie for me)– I was a little nervous in my not knowing what to expect. Fortunately, Loot Crate didn’t include anything too traumatizing- and I actually enjoyed January’s box very much.

Let me show you what I received!

LootCrateJanuary201602

First up in January’s Loot Crate are the usual items: the monthly collector’s pin and mini-magazine. It looks like Loot Crate might be trying something different with their pins this year, because the one I received this month was actually pretty nice quality (no offense to the company, but their pins leading up to this point looked pretty flimsy and cheap.) I can’t say for certain I’m going to start becoming an avid collector- but it did catch my eye!

This month’s magazine, touching more on the “INVASION” theme, offered tips on how to survive an extra-terrestrial takeover (everything I learned about that I learned from the movie ‘Signs’, however,) and a really handy guide to catching up on ‘The X-Files’ with key plot points and character breakdowns.  The magazine also featured a rather freaky article about different types of invaders already here on Earth (castrator barnacles, anyone? Yikes.) and small games and puzzles within it’s pages. I always turn to the mini-magazine when it comes to reviewing the products I’ve received, too- since it includes a lot of helpful information.

LootCrateJanuary201603

Part of Loot Crate’s re-vamped style for 2016 included the promise that each month’s box would feature a t-shirt, and although some of their past designs and collaborations have been questionable- I’m really liking the look of this ‘X-Files’ shirt- a collaboration with Threadless and created by the winner of a design contest. The fabric of the shirt is soft-not scratchy- and it’s big enough to not have to worry about shrinking it right away. Awesome!

LootCrateJanuary201604

LootCrateJanuary201605

I think my favorite item in January’s Loot Crate was this plush Facehugger from ‘ALIENS’. I couldn’t stop laughing when I saw it- and then I turned it over, saw it’s adorable little face- and laughed even harder. This is going in my bedroom for sure- because I know it’s going to look pretty incredible when I prop it up against my pillows.

The plush also came with a rubber band so that I could attach it to my face if and when I decide a selfie is appropriate (and I suspect I’ll be taking one in an hour or so.)

LootCrateJanuary201606

A couple of weeks ago, I hosted my best friend Sean’s 30th birthday party at Dave & Busters. For those who are not familiar- it’s a chain restaurant/bar/arcade for adults only- even though there were a ton of toddlers running around for some inexplicable reason. But I digress. While we were there, waiting to be seated, we made our way to the arcade and I made my way to an old school style ‘Space Invaders’ game to brush up on my skills. Ten intense (and infuriating) minutes later, and I had to walk away to rest my cramped up joystick hand.

This candy-colored figurine is definitely less stressful than the pixelated ones on the screen- and dare I say, cuter? I shouldn’t have any difficulty finding a spot for this somewhere.

LootCrateJanuary201607

The second and final ‘X-Files’ related item in January’s Loot Crate came in the form of this water-resistant LED flashlight (with batteries!) which is actually INSANELY helpful and has found a home in the glove compartment of my car in the case of an emergency. I love when Loot Crate includes items like this from time to time, because they’re not only fun- but they’re practical, too.

I always recommend keeping a flashlight and batteries somewhere in your vehicle- so this came right in time just as I was getting ready to update all of my emergency kit gear for the next big snowstorm we have here in New England!

LootCrateJanuary201608

Oh God. I knew this day would come. The day where I’d have to finally open up and admit that I’m not a fan of ‘The Fifth Element’. Not at all. I actually can’t stand the movie- and I cringed when I opened up this prop replica of the Multi Pass featured in the film. I’ll be gifting this one for sure, since I have a couple of friends who love TFE and will no doubt get a kick out being able to use their own identification cards in place of Leeloo’s (the ID card can be replaced by simply sliding it in or out of the plastic holder.)

If I were a fan of the movie, I’m sure I’d be happy with the quality of this replica- but I’m just… Not… So…

Moving on!

LootCrateJanuary201609

My mother is currently in the process of making preparations to convert a large workshop my father built in her backyard a long time ago into a mini-movie theater- complete with reclining seats, lit aisles, a marquee and a vintage popcorn maker and concession stand- among other things. Since she began the project, she’s been collecting old Hollywood memorabilia- so when I saw these two high quality vintage sci-fi art prints in this month’s Loot Crate, I knew she’d love to place them on the walls when she eventually got the place decorated. These are fantastic prints (and I love ‘War of the Worlds’!)

Overall, I was pretty happy with this month’s Loot Crate. I thought the items that were chosen to be included were unique but consistent with January’s theme. I have a couple of things I’ll be keeping for myself and a couple of things I’ll be gifting to loved ones- which is always a plus with a subscription service.

I was just recently notified that the theme for February’s crate was going to be “DEAD” (as in ‘Deadpool’- yay! And ‘The Walking Dead’- YAAAAAAYYY!) so I’m already super excited to see what I get!

Loot Crate: December 2015.

Comments 2 Standard

December2015LootCrate01

Hello! I hope all those who celebrated had a wonderful Christmas. Mine was phenomenal- spent with family and friends by the tree- and I’ve been preparing for the coming New Year by making some NYE arrangements and putting together my last posts of 2015- including this one!

To wrap up my monthly subscription box reviews for 2015 was December’s Loot Crate. With the recent release of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ (which I’m FINALLY seeing for the first time tonight after successfully avoiding spoilers until a group of my friends could all coordinate a day and time to go and experience it together), it seemed appropriate that this month’s theme was ‘GALAXY’.

Of course, “GALAXY” can mean a lot of different things for a lot of different people- and isn’t just limited to the ‘Star Wars’ world. For that reason, I thought Loot Crate did a pretty nice job of incorporating other galactic-centric franchises in December’s assortment of items.

Let’s take a look at what I received!

December2015LootCrate02

As usual, the first items I’m going to get out of the way are the two that are included in every Loot Crate- the monthly collector’s pin (which I admittedly don’t collect at all) and the mini-magazine. This month’s edition featured a look back at the service’s themes throughout 2015 (and where it was revealed that every crate in 2016 would include a t-shirt!), a Q&A with designer Drew Wise- who is the creator of the shirt in this month’s assortment of items- and an interview with Chris Lee, the Executive Producer of ‘Halo 5: Guardians’

December2015LootCrate03

December2015LootCrate04

Before I’d opened this month’s crate, I had wondered why it looked and felt so bulky- but once I laid eyes on this metal, hinged-top ‘Halo 5’ ammo tin- it made sense. Most of the items in December’s crate were actually stored inside- if that helps gives you an idea of how much room this product has- and how useful it can be for storage. I love the design, and I plan on using this for holding mail, postcards, etc. for safe keeping.

December2015LootCrate05

HAN! I love this exclusive Funko POP! Vinyl bobble-head doll. It’s by far my favorite item in the box and will be joining the multiple (and I mean multiple) Funko figurines I’ve been collecting over the years. This is actually my first ‘Star Wars’-related one- which makes it all the more special to me. It’s adorable!

December2015LootCrate06

This is the droid I’m looking for. Keeping up with ‘The Force Awakens’ trend, Loot Crate included these bright, cute and warm crew socks with a BB-8 print. This is the item- much like my Han Solo figurine- that I will be shamelessly keeping for myself. You can never have enough socks- especially ones as fun as these!

December2015LootCrate07

I’ve owned a vintage denim jacket since my teens that is covered with patches from bands I liked in high school, sports teams (specifically the Red Sox), inspirational quotes or mementos from places I’d traveled to- but I think I still have enough room on the back of the jacket where I can press on this ‘Galaxy Quest’ patch for good measure. It’s hard to tell from the photo- but this item is a pretty decent size! It’ll definitely be noticeable!

December2015LootCrate08

Christmas may be over, but there’s still technically a few days left in the 2015 holiday season. For that reason- I’m going to sport this galaxy-inspired 8-bit holiday sweater shirt at least once before New Years. Designed by Drew Wise- this tee is cute and comfortable- and something I’ll be putting away for next season when I have to attend holiday parties and want something unique to wear.

December2015LootCrate09

Finally, December’s ‘Digital Loot’ was actually for the ‘Halo 5’ players on XBox. This card contains a special code to obtain a REQ Pack in the game- which come loaded with a bunch of cool things and collectibles for game play. I unfortunately don’t own an XBox- so I’ll be passing this along to a friend of mine who does and who is also a big ‘Halo’ fan. I’m sure he’ll appreciate it!

I had a lot of fun with December’s crate. I thought it was a nice way for Loot Crate to close out what has been another fantastic year of geeky goodness. I haven’t heard what the theme is for January’s box just yet- but I’m sure it’s going to be great!

POPSUGAR Must Have Box: December 2015

Leave a comment Standard

POPSUGARDec201501

POPSUGARDec201502

Next up on my subscription service review list is my December POPSUGAR ‘Must Have’ Box- which has quickly toppled Loot Crate as my favorite subscription box to receive. Although it’s a little pricier than some other services- the value of the products included each and every month is worth what I spend, and then some. I’m always left so impressed- and the items I don’t or won’t use end up being INCREDIBLE gifts for my friends and family.

December’s assortment of items was inspired by: Celebration, Holiday Glamour, New Year’s, Indulgence, Chocolate and Sparkles. I obviously enjoy all of those things- so I couldn’t open this box fast enough!

POPSUGARDec201503

To cover the “indulgence” and “chocolate” aspects of December’s POPSUGAR box- I received one package of My Cup of Cake’s Belgian chocolate microwavable mug soufflé. I’ve had similar products like this in the past (cake in a mug, brownie in a mug, etc.) so I know how to prepare these and what to generally expect in terms of flavor and texture if it’s done right- so I’m pretty excited to give this a try on Christmas Eve while I’m curled up in my blankets and watching ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ with my dog. Yum!

POPSUGARDec201504

POPSUGARDec201505

Although I’m done with my gift wrapping for this holiday season, I’ll be saving this roll of sparkling glitter tape from Meri Meri for my packages next year. It’s so pretty- and it will pair nicely with these gift tags from Tiny Prints. Both items are a beautiful and simple white and silver combination- so the presents I wrap for Christmas come next December are going to look gorgeous.

POPSUGARDec201506

POPSUGARDec201507

The only item in December’s ‘Must Have’ box that I plan to gift to a friend of mine- who is a wine enthusiast to the core- is this uniquely shaped and built-to-last bottle stopper designed by Nima Oberoi. I know she’ll appreciate this item and get much more use out of it than I will!

POPSUGARDec201508

POPSUGARDec201509

Up until now, I was pretty unfamiliar with Stowaway Cosmetics– but now that I’ve been wearing these AMAZING (think: creamy, dreamy, highly pigmented and long-lasting) shades of their miniature lipstick tubes for a little over a week now- I’m sold. Out of the three, ‘Raspberry’ is my current favorite (it changes every couple of days, however-) and I’d love to try some of their other products if they’re half as good as these are!

POPSUGARDec2015010

What do you do when you wear a lot of silver and gold during the holiday season but can’t decide which of the two to choose to sport at any given time without going overboard? You turn to this stunning silver, gold, and rose gold plated chain bracelet from Luv AJ (a $65 value!) to cover all the bases while looking chic and sparkling. I’m in love with this piece- which I’ve been rocking on my wrist almost daily since it goes with pretty much everything I wear and helps make even the most casual of outfits look more put together and fancy.

POPSUGARDec2015011

POPSUGARDec2015012

And where else could I store that beautiful chain bracelet shown above than in this equally lovely leatherette and suede jewelry box from Swing Design? I’m so enamored with the colors of this box- which I feel would look great on display through the remainder of the Winter, as well as the Summer (since the colors kind of remind me of the beach.)

POPSUGARDec2015013

And finally, the coupons- which almost always have an impressive value themselves! The first, from My Cup of Cake, is a 25% of any order voucher. Since each package of cake costs approximately $6 each- I’ll be using this to stock up if they taste good enough!

The second coupon, from Stowaway Cosmetics, is valid for three additional lipsticks- for free- with the purchase of my first Stowaway Cosmetics kit. Considering how much I’m loving the trio I received in this month’s box- I might just sign up!

Overall, December’s ‘Must Have’ box was another huge hit for me. With the exception of the bottle stopper- I’ll be using and enjoying everything I received for a while! I can’t wait for next month’s assortment of items!

Loot Crate: November 2015.

November2015LootCrate01

Even though my November Loot Crate arrived a couple of days before Thanksgiving, the general hustle and bustle of the holiday kept me from sitting down and properly reviewing it until now. Coincidentally, November’s box was probably one of the first assortment of items I’ve received since initially subscribing with the service that I’ve been rather disappointed with. That had nothing to do with my tardiness, of course. That’s just my own fault.

November’s theme- “COMBAT”, had endless possibilities- but the overall selection of toys and trinkets fell a little short, in my opinion.

Let’s take a look at what I received:

November2015LootCrate02

Kicking things off in last month’s box were the monthly mini-magazine and collector’s pin. This month’s edition, which featured it’s usual subscriber-submitted photos and item breakdowns- also had a small write-up of famous video game rivalries (including my favorite from ‘Motal Kombat’- Sub Zero v. Scorpion), an interesting article by Lola Binkerd detailing the world’s fascination with stories where kids are pitted against each other in fights-to-the-death (think ‘Hunger Games’)– and an interview with WWE commentator, Kyle Edwards.

November2015LootCrate03

In the entirety of the ‘Hunger Games’ franchise, I’ve only ever seen the first movie- which I thought was good, but didn’t get me as hooked as some of my friends who have since religiously read all of the books and have watched the movies as they are released. For that reason, I’ll be hosting my own ‘Hunger Games’ among them- where the winner will take home this replica pin of Katniss’ tribute token.

May the odds be ever in their favor.

November2015LootCrate04

November2015LootCrate05

Loot Crate is always dependable when it comes to sending me things that I have an absolute ball wearing around my house, but may have some difficulty getting away with in public. Add these Shredder sunglasses/mask from ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ to that list. While I admittedly enjoyed sporting these while doing karate moves around my place to the amusement of my roommate and to the horror of my dog- I think I’ll be passing these along to my niece or brother- who will probably get more use out of them.

November2015LootCrate06

November2015LootCrate07

My best friend is going to kill me for admitting this, since he grew up on it and will always and forever hold a special place for it in his heart- but I’ve never liked ‘Street Fighter’. It always bored me, so I wasn’t particularly thrilled with this special edition comic book designed by Loot Crate for this month’s box. I’ll be passing it along to him, for sure- because I know he’ll love it!

Blizzard Entertainment, who owned a considerable amount of my income (and my soul) years ago when I played ‘World of Warcraft’ all the time- have adorable-ized some of their most famous and memorable villains in their ‘Cute But Deadly’ series. These stickers are precious (LOOK AT KERRIGAN!) and will also be given to my niece to decorate her notebooks with.

November2015LootCrate08

Probably my favorite item in November’s Loot Crate, this Vault Boy bobble head, made to commemorate ‘Fallout 4’ (side note: post-apocalyptic Boston is scarily fun) has found a home beside my PS4 in recent days. It’s a great quality item that stands about 6″ tall. I think this will be the toy I shamelessly keep for myself instead of giving away to any of my friends!

November2015LootCrate09

Finally, another ‘Cute But Deadly’ item was included in November’s Loot Crate. I received a pint-sized, detailed Zeratul figurine from ‘Starcraft’. Like many of the other toys in November’s crate- this one is going to my niece. She’s a little too young to know who these characters are or where they come from- but she’ll enjoy it nonetheless.

With the exception of the bobble head figurine- I wasn’t really impressed with November’s Loot Crate. With all the rivalries out there in video games, movies, comics and television- I felt like this assortment of items was very limited.

December’s crate, themed ‘GALAXY’ (just in time for the new ‘Star Wars’- oh yes!) will hopefully be an improvement.

‘Til next time!

POPSUGAR Must Have Box: November 2015.

Leave a comment Standard

POPSUGARMustHaveNovember201501

The second subscription box review for the month of November comes courtesy of POPSUGAR, who’s ‘Must Have” box is quickly becoming my favorite assortment of items to receive (the third and final box for the month, Loot Crate, is currently en route to me!) I have to admit that this box arrived at a perfect time- since I’ve been trying to prepare for upcoming job interviews as well as Thanksgiving- and I have admittedly been getting a little frazzled in the process of staying organized and on top of things. To receive a box filled with fun things briefly took the edge off for a bit- which is always appreciated.

POPSUGARMustHaveNovember201502

November’s box, in keeping up with the impending holiday- was inspired by the nicer aspects of Thanksgiving (as opposed to say, “FOOD COMAS” or “BLACK FRIDAY FIGHTS AT TARGET”, for example.) I had already received a couple of spoilers/hints via e-mail leading up to the collection shipping out- so I was eager to check everything out.

So, what did I receive?

POPSUGARMustHaveNovember201503

For Thanksgiving this year, I’ll be heading to my mom’s house to gather with family and stuff my face, and while I normally help out around the kitchen and with serving her guests- this year I’m only obligated to bring myself. HOWEVER, I’ll be bringing along this jar of pecan honey mustard from Terrapin Ridge Farms to serve as a dipping sauce for her appetizers. I got curious and took a look at Terrapin Ridge Farms’ website to see what else they have available- and I think I’ve found quite a few things to order and gift to my foodie friends for Christmas.

POPSUGARMustHaveNovember201504

I can never have enough candles- especially ones that come in packaging as lovely as this beautifully fresh fragranced one from Capri Blue. With a metallic tin that doubles as a jewelry box when the wax runs out and a lovely carved wooden lid- this candle has already found a spot in my bedroom. I received “Rain”, which is scented in the way you’d probably expect- clean, crisp, and refreshing. I’m a big fan.

POPSUGARMustHaveNovember201505

POPSUGARMustHaveNovember201506

I’ve been preparing to go through my annual End-of-the-Year makeup clean-out in the coming days- which is where I do an inventory of cosmetics I own that are either empty of almost expired and go about throwing them out and/or replacing them. I know for a fact that a neutral eye shadow palette I’ve owned and loved since the Spring is almost gone (I’ve been scraping my brush along the edges of the container in a desperate attempt to salvage any remaining color) so this “Beauty & the Box” shadow quad from Tarte– which features two shimmery tones and two matte tones for easy blending- is a life saver.

I’ve been wearing these pigmented and long-lasting colors every day for the better part of a week now- and I’m completely smitten with them!

POPSUGARMustHaveNovember201507

Late November and the entire month of December is all about sparkling to me. My jewelry, my clothing, and my makeup- I like to look and feel as festive as the scenery around me in beautiful New England this time of year. November’s “Must Have” box included a high valued item ($56!) in the form of this gorgeous crystal headband from Deepa Gurnani. I’m really looking forward to wearing this with my holiday ensembles around the party and celebration circuit this season.

POPSUGARMustHaveNovember201508

I’ve never been much of a bingo player, but I have to admit I liked the look of this modernized (and very chic) set from West Emory. I have an Aunt- a frequent attendee at local bingo nights- who would absolutely love this set. I’ll be seeing her at Thanksgiving next week- and I think she’ll really appreciate this and get a lot more use out of it than I will!

POPSUGARMustHaveNovember201509

November has, to date- been pretty stressful at times for me- which can really be said about 2015 in general (but I’ll get to that in my year-end wrap-up post next month.) Even still, I have a lot to be thankful for- and I’ve already been writing down my gratitude to family and friends on these really beautiful postcards from Gramr Gratitude Co. Each one features a gorgeous print with a word of thanks on the front. I love receiving mail- especially handwritten letters and postcards- so I’ve been enjoying repaying the favor to some of those I hold nearest and dearest to me.

POPSUGARMustHaveNovember201510

Finally, the add-on bonuses in November’s “Must Have” box- all of which will be coming in handy this holiday season. I received a coupon for $15 off of a Gramr subscription (monthly deliveries of postcards!) and 20% off of a future purchase at Capri Blue. Considering how much I am loving the “Rain” candle- I think I’ll be picking up a couple more for myself and friends this Christmas.

The last add-on bonus was a $20 gift card to inkdot.com– which I’m going to be using for a canvas print I’ve been planning on creating for a family member in the coming weeks. I’m really excited to have it done and done well- but still be able to save some money on it!

As usual, POPSUGAR didn’t disappoint this month. I love that I can get so much use out of the things they send me- and the stuff I give to others make such wonderful and beautiful gifts.

I’m really looking forward to December’s box- which will be my first holiday one since subscribing with the service earlier this Summer. I have a feeling it’s going to be really impressive!

Loot Crate: October 2015.

Leave a comment Standard

LootCrateOctober20151

I admit, when I first heard that this October’s Loot Crate theme was “TIME”, and not something horror-related like last year’s assortment of items (which is still one of my all-time favorites) I was a little disappointed and slightly worried that I would be let down despite the teasers and not-so-spoilerish-spoilers that Loot Crate occasionally released leading up to the actual box shipping out. I knew in advance there would be some ‘Back to the Future’ stuff and of course- items from ‘Doctor Who’- but the rest was a mystery!

I have to say, this month’s crate surpassed my expectations (in a good way) and I was pleasantly surprised with what I received.

Let’s take a look!

LootCrateOctober20152

First and foremost, as always- was my monthly collector’s pin and mini-magazine. The magazine, completely revamped, featured a more in-depth look at Loot Crate’s product team (and their new “LEVEL UP” subscription service) and a pretty handy guide to cosplaying beloved time traveling characters like Marty McFly and Bill & Ted. There was also a pretty fun flow chart to help determine which of the Doctors from ‘Doctor Who’ is the Doctor for you (try saying that four times fast.)

The magazine still features subscriber photos and item descriptions, too, of course.

LootCrateOctober20153

With October marking the 30th Anniversary of ‘Back to the Future’ (and last week marking the day and time Marty travels to 2015 in ‘Back to the Future II’) it seemed fitting to include these two incredible collectibles in this month’s crate. The first, an exclusive Funko POP! figurine of Doc, which is just way too cute for words (I’ve already put it on display in my kitchen!)

And the second ‘Back to the Future’ item was this decently sized replica of Marty’s Hoverboard with it’s own little display stand. It’s pretty neat- although it makes me wish I had a real Hoverboard of my own. Somebody please get on that. It’s 2015.

LootCrateOctober20154

I am just going to put this out there and say that I’ve never really been a ‘Doctor Who’ fan. I know (most of) the characters and I know the overall plot- but I’ve just never been able to immerse myself in the fandom like the way I do with a series like ‘The Walking Dead’ or ‘Silent Hill’. I do have a few friends who are OBSESSED with the Doctor, however- and I’ll be giving this ‘Sonic Spork’ to one of them soon since I know they’d get a kick out of it!

LootCrateOctober20155

Finally (and sorry for the wrinkles. I took a photo right after I unrolled it,) I loved this cozy, cotton and retro t-shirt featuring my favorite time-traveling dudes- Bill & Ted! I can’t wait to wear this out and about soon. It’s fantastic, and might be one of my favorite t-shirts that Loot Crate has included in a box since I started subscribing!

Now, to some- it might seem like there’s not a lot of items in October’s box. Loot Crate typically sends a lot of smaller items every month- but the overall value and quality of the collectibles and clothing included this month surpasses what I paid for it- and that’s good enough for me. I really loved everything I received- and the ‘Doctor Who’ spork will make a fun gift!

November’s theme was recently revealed to be ‘COMBAT’, and all I know is that there better be something ‘Mortal Kombat’ related included in it!

I can’t wait to check it out.

POPSUGAR Must Have Box: October 2015.

POPSUGAROctober20151

I know that in the past I’ve said that Loot Crate is my favorite subscription service that I pay for, but in the couple of months that I’ve been subscribed the POPSUGAR’s monthly “Must Have” box- it’s definitely creeping up on the competition. I love the themes and monthly inspiration, how everything is carefully selected and packed, the variety of what’s inside the box- and the value. I get food, home decor, accessories, beauty products, jewelry and so much more. It’s an incredible find that I look forward to each and every month!

October’s box was inspired by Autumn (yes!) being cozy and restful nights (double yes!) irresistible, and breast cancer awareness (the entire month of October marks Breast Cancer Awareness month, for those who didn’t know!) As it turns out, via a card tucked inside this month’s assortment of items- POPSUGAR made a charitable donation to Right Action for Women (also known as the Christina Applegate Foundation), which I thought was fantastic- and I’ll be making an independent donation of my own before the month is over.

Let’s see what was inside, shall we?

POPSUGAROctober20152

I was so, so, SO excited to receive a hardcover copy of Mindy Kaling’s “Why Not Me?” and I absolutely cannot wait to start reading it this week. I think Mindy is so talented, so funny, and unbelievably inspirational- and this book of her personal essays that cover a variety of thoughts and topics is sure to be a page-turner that I’ll read cover to cover in no time at all. Just give me a rainy day and a warm cup of coffee and I’ll immerse myself in this!

POPSUGAROctober20153

I love the “cozy” items included in October’s POPSUGAR box. The first, a set of 100% satin pillowcases from Savvy Sleepers. I’ve heard a lot of great things about these pillowcases, like how their material prevents wrinkles and hair damage while you sleep (because satin doesn’t roughly rub up against your skin and hair like some other fabrics.) I’m going to be washing and changing my sheets and bedding this coming weekend- so these are going to get some use for sure!

And I am THRILLED with these soft, fuzzy slipper socks from Richer Poorer! I wear socks like these on my lazy days around my place or on nights where it’s cold under my covers. They’re just so comfortable- and cute!

POPSUGAROctober20154

I love that POPSUGAR includes one or two food/beverage items in each box, since it sort of opens doors to brands and foods I wouldn’t have discovered or would have thought to try otherwise. I haven’t bitten into these caramel-filled waffle cones from Belgian Boys yet (they’ll be packed in my lunch for work this week)– but they look delicious.

I also took a peek at some of the company’s other products available on their website- and it all looks ridiculously tasty!

POPSUGAROctober20155

I’m not a big wine drinker, but I thought these four individual paper wine bags from Easy, Tiger were pretty cute- and I’ve already gifted them to my brother and my sister-in-law who will surely get more use out of them than I would! The company makes more than just liquor bags, too- and I’ve been coveting some of their uniquely styled greeting cards and comfy-looking t-shirts while browsing their website!

POPSUGAROctober20156

I am a compulsive exfoliator- I go through facial and body scrubs on a bi-weekly basis- so I was pretty psyched to get this full-sized tub of a relaxing lavender & vanilla scented sea salt and sugar scrub from The Honest Company. I’m looking forward to working this stuff into the dry patches on my knees and elbows the next time I take a nice, hot soak in my tub. It’s going to be divine!

And I can never have enough leave-in conditioner- so the deluxe sample-sized one from It’s A 10 is always welcome on my bathroom vanity! I’m currently finishing up a couple of other conditioning products I’ve received in recent beauty/subscription boxes- but this one is next on my list to try when I run out of them!

POPSUGAROctober20157

And finally, POPSUGAR also gives out some really impressive coupons each month! October’s box (the photo was edited to white out the promo codes) included a 20% coupon for Savvy Sleepers- for when I’m ready to order more pillowcases- a 30% off coupon for The Honest Company, and a $40 gift card for Danielle Stevens Jewelry! I am head over heels in love with their monogrammed necklaces and I will definitely be using this generous bonus to purchase one of my own in the coming weeks!

Overall- and it should come as no surprise to anyone- I LOVED October’s POPSUGAR box! Each item included was wonderful and thoughtful and I can’t wait to dive right into using and trying them!

I cannot wait to see what’s in store for November!

Loot Crate: September 2015.

LootCrateSeptember20151

When the theme for September’s Loot Crate, “SUMMON” was announced- I wasn’t sure what to expect. As a recovering World of Warcraft addict (I don’t want to talk about it,) I immediately thought of those nights spent frantically trying to summon a pet or complete a spell to protect my poor little Blood Elf while someone from the opposing team (usually my friends who were playing one room over from me) kept attempting to kill me over and over again.

I also thought of my favorite shows from my early teens, like ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and it’s spin-off companion series, ‘Angel’- where summoning ANYTHING almost always resulted in a disaster.

I kept an open mind as I went through the contents of September’s box when it arrived- and here’s what I got!

LootCrateSeptember20152

First up are the usual suspects: my monthly collectors pin and mini-magazine. Aside from the usual puzzles, fan photos, articles, interviews and breakdowns of items in the box- September’s magazine also had the distinction of including a set of five perforated cards printed on card stock to be used for a tabletop game (a sixth card that was included had the instructions printed on them.) I’m going to have to figure out what each card represents before I attempt to play it with anyone- but it looks interesting!

LootCrateSeptember20153

LootCrateSeptember20154

The item that caught my attention almost immediately in September’s crate was this knitted Pikachu hat that I have to admit I think is SO ADORABLE (although I don’t think I’d wear it outside the house.) I remember playing the Pokemon game on my friend’s Game Boy (the big, clunky one) back in Jr. High when the franchise was just starting to get popular, and not really understanding much of the story apart from “oh, these weird little animals are cute and I have to catch them!”- so this was a fun little blast from the past. The hat also has knitted PokeBalls on it, which cracked me up.

LootCrateSeptember20155

I haven’t watched ‘The Simpsons’ in aaaaages, so I wasn’t sure if this Homer/Buddha-hybrid figurine was something cooked up on the show or if it was just something Loot Crate came up with themselves, but it’s still cute (and the fact that it came in a take-out style box was a nice touch.) I think I’ll be gifting this to a friend of mine who is a huge fan of the show and it’s characters since he’ll appreciate it much more than I can!

LootCrateSeptember20156

I KNEW there would be at least one WoW-related item in September’s Loot Crate! I just knew it! This stress ball, molded in the likeness of a Hearthstone, is definitely going to come in handy on those rougher days at work when I need to squeeze away my frustrations. I think this might be my favorite item in September’s box- apart from the Pikachu hat!

LootCrateSeptember20157

Speaking of Hearthstone- I also received a collectible coin and card pack code for the game in this month’s crate. I remember sitting in on a panel at San Diego Comic-Con ’14 that gave audience members a preview of what the game was going to be like- and I remember thinking that my friends, who are big fans of WoW, would probably enjoy it. For that reason- I’ll be gifting this to them since they’ll get more use out of it!

September’s crate did not include any ‘Digital Loot’, just an advertisement/flyer for the aforementioned card game that was included in the monthly mini-magazine.

LootCrateSeptember20158

Finally, I’ve only ever seen a couple of episodes of ‘Supernatural’ and never really got into it (although I have a hard time enjoying anything Jared Padalecki is in because of his overall terrible attitude and presence across social media,) but my two older brothers LOVE the show- and I know one of them will get a kick out of this replica of the Chevy Impala that is said to be prominently featured in it. Loot Crate’s mini magazine states that the license plates on this replica are of the original Kansas ones- which are apparently hard to come by?

Overall- I thought the “SUMMON” box was really creative! There were quite a few items I wouldn’t have expected (and some I definitely would have,) and the quality of everything was impressive.

I had expected another horror-themed box for October, but it was recently revealed that next month’s Loot Crate would have a “TIME” theme- so I’m bracing myself for some Doctor Who items!

POPSUGAR Must Have Box: September 2015.

POPSUGARSept011

POPSUGARSept012

Having been so completely impressed and pleased with August’s POPSUGAR Must Have Box, my first with the service, I was practically pacing the floor while awaiting the arrival of my September one. I already knew one of the products that was going to be included this month thanks to the e-mailed spoiler POPSUGAR sent out to subscribers near the end of August, but the rest was a mystery!

September’s theme/inspiration, also revealed near the end of last month- contained items centered around ‘Fashion Fix/Travel/Refresh/Beauty Recovery’. With a Vegas and San Diego trip planned for mid-October- I was especially excited to see what fit into the ‘travel’ aspect of this month’s assortment of products. Whatever can make my packing and/or time spent in the airport easier and less stressful is always a welcomed treat.

POPSUGARSept013

Oh, hello again, Briogeo’s Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-In Conditioning Spray! The last time our paths crossed was in my May Ipsy bag– and I had taken quite a liking to a sample of you that I’d received! Coincidentally enough, I had said I would *definitely* purchase a full-sized bottle in the future- and now I don’t have to since POPSUGAR was nice enough to send me one! This conditioning spray is just as lovely as ever (and just as strongly fragranced- but I don’t mind!) and I’ve been using it daily with another styling product over the past few days to protect my color-treated curls and keep my hair soft and shiny.

POPSUGARSept014

I’ve been doing an “au naturel” look with my nails lately, which is just a fancier way of saying that I haven’t been able to find the time to get a proper manicure for a couple of weeks now so my fingertips are looking a little rugged. Even with a fresh coat of polish, my cuticles are in need of more than a little TLC these days. I was really happy to see this cuticle oil- in the cutest little dropper bottle- from NCLA in September’s box (retail value of $18) because I know it’ll come in handy when I finally sit down to give my digits the attention and affection they deserve!

POPSUGARSept015

I love that POPSUGAR includes at least one food/beverage item in each month’s box. This month, it was this slightly-sweetened almond & dried cherry mix from Nourish Snacks. These are great to keep in your bag for travel since they’re a much healthier (and tastier) alternative to a bag of potato chips, cookies or any other regrettable temptation. Nourish Snacks also has a bunch of other varieties available at their website- all of which look pretty good!

POPSUGARSept016

POPSUGARSept017

The item I knew I’d be receiving this month was the ‘Brow Envy: Brow Shaping and Defining Kit’ from Too Faced (a $39 value!) My brows have always-thankfully- had a natural high arch and decent thickness to them, so having to maintain and shape them every day as part of my makeup regimen was never really a concern for me- but I feel like this will come in handy in those days between waxings when I need to keep bushy-ness at bay. The kit comes with two brow powders, brushes, tweezers, stencils, instructions for the stencils, a highlighter- and setting wax- all packaged nice and neat. It’s convenient for travel or for simply keeping on hand at home.

POPSUGARSept018

I was really happy to see these travel cases (one TSA-friendly clear pouch and two black & white patterned drawstring bags) from Hudson + Bleecker in September’s box. During my last mini-vacation to the West Coast, my usual toiletries pouch was all but destroyed after an impromptu inspection by the TSA in Logan Airport and I haven’t had a chance to replace it. With not one- but three flights scheduled within a few short weeks- I think these bags are really going to make my packing 100x easier. I’m hoping that TSA is gentler with these then they were with my last ones- especially because these are of much higher quality!

POPSUGARSept019

POPSUGARSept10

My favorite item in September’s POPSUGAR box had to be these XO stud earrings from Kris Nations ($35 value.) I’ve been starting to gravitate towards smaller earrings after years of wearing dramatic dangling ones or chandelier styles (especially in the Fall and Winter when they can easily get snagged on sweaters! Ouch!) and these are perfect transition pieces. Plated in 14K gold, the earrings are subtle, lightweight, and so, so cute.  I have a feeling I’ll be getting a lot of wear out of these. Also? They’re packaged so simple- but it’s still beautiful and unique at the same time!

POPSUGARSept11

POPSUGARSept12

Finally, the coveted coupons. September’s POPSUGAR box included two 20% coupons for Kris Nations and Too Faced. I’ll be using both since I’m a big fan of both brands (I’ve been eyeing the Massachusetts state pride necklace at Kris Nations for a couple of days now- and I think now is a good time to order it!)

I also received two $10 coupons for anyone looking to subscribe to POPSUGAR’s Must Have Box. Each card has a unique code printed on the back to give you the $10 discount on your very first box!

Overall, September’s POPSUGAR Must Have Box was another wildly successful one for me. The total retail value of the products included surpassed $150- and each item was carefully selected to go hand-in-hand with the listed theme/inspirations. I really loved everything- and I can’t wait to see what’s coming in October!
