Every once in a while, I am introduced to a product or an independent brand that completely blows me away with their quality and creativity. The lovely Imogen recently introduced me to such a brand. Shiro Cosmetics is a 100% vegan, cruelty-free cosmetics company with eye shadows, lip colors, blushes, bronzers, and powders inspired by video games, television shows (the “Seven Kingdoms/Game of Thrones” collection looks gorgeous,) internet memes, and so on. Swatches shown on the site look rich and highly pigmented, and the price points are completely reasonable and affordable.

With actor Nicolas Cage’s 50th birthday taking place earlier this month, Shiro released a lip gloss collection depicting him in five different eras of American history. With names like “Nic Cage Churning Butter One Crisp Thanksgiving Morn” and “Nic Cage Doing the Charleston in a Bustling Speakeasy,” I couldn’t resist- and I ordered the whole set of five full-sized glosses for $35.

My package arrived shortly thereafter and included candy and a couple of eye shadow samples, “When the Thrush Knocks” from the “Hobbit” Collection, and “Gift of Mercy” from the GoT collection. Reviews of those can be found further down in this post!

Gloss # 1: “Nic Cage Churning Butter One Crisp Thanksgiving Morn”

“April showers bring May flowers. Mayflowers bring Nic Cage?

A gorgeous nude color, slightly on the sheerer side of medium coverage. We like to think of it as “Nicolas Beige.” Flavored like yummy honey! (vegan substitute, not the bees)” – (LINK)

I loved this sweet-scented nude color. It was very subtle on my lips- perfect for everyday wear. I think this is going to be my go-to for work or when I want a hint of shine without a ton of color.

Gloss # 2: “Nic Cage Nibbling Petit Fours in a Posh Victorian Tearoom”

“A Victorian tearoom is not to be confused with a Nictorian tearoom, which, rather than being an elegant tea-taking experience, is actually just a terrible pun for which I am very ashamed.

Moderately opaque dusty rose with a gentle pearl finish. Flavored with fancy pink frosting!” – (LINK)

Out of all the glosses, this one was my favorite scented and the closest match to the lip colors I typically wear. It’s a lovely rose shade that compliments my skin tone perfectly.

Gloss # 3: “Nic Cage Posing for a Calendar with Shiny Bright Red Cars”

“It’s a little known fact that National Treasure’s “Book of Secrets” actually referred to an extensive collection of Nic Cage’s glamorous pin-up shoots. The film, alas, took many creative liberties and covered up the whole thing.

Moderately opaque bright sports-car red, with a subtle pearl finish. Flavored like fresh cherry pie!” – (LINK)

Ever a fan of bright, cherry red lips- this gloss was one of my favorites in the set. It gave me a great pop of dramatic color and a beautiful shine. This looks great by itself, or over a red lipstick for extra “oomph!”

Gloss # 4: “Nic Cage Doing the Charleston in a Bustling Speakeasy”

“Won’t you Cageston with me?/And while the band is playing that/Nicolas Cage, around we will rage/Together we’ll show them/How the Cageston is done/We’ll surprise everyone!”

Moderately opaque fuchsia-mulberry. Will leave behind a faint stain. Flavored like bubbly champagne!” – (LINK)

I wore this plummy/wine colored gloss out to dinner with my girlfriends over the weekend, and like the description says, it does stain your lips- which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After an appetizer, an entree, a dessert, and coffee- my lips still looked full and dramatic.

Gloss # 5: “Nic Cage Getting Funky with that Saturday Night Fever”

“The invention of the disco ball came about one night after Nic Cage, at the tender age of five, accidentally sat on a mirror. The shards stuck to his bum and reflected the lasers which happened to be around, throwing off glorious scatterings of multicolored light which made everyone want to dance. Unfortunately, the name “Nicso ball” did not stick.

Super sheer purple with bright orange sparkle. Flavored like grape candy, Lip Smackers style!” – (LINK)

Although this gloss appears dark purple in the tube, it applied as a very pretty lavender/pink on my lips. The only downside to this particular gloss was the scent. I’m not a fan of grape-flavored anything, really- so when I applied this for the first time, all it reminded me of was children’s cough syrup/Tylenol.

THE VERDICT

These glosses gave a good amount of color and a beautiful shine. While you shouldn’t expect all-day wear with these (they aren’t lipsticks, after all,) the longevity is pretty impressive. I only had to re-apply a couple of times throughout the day as opposed to every hour, on the hour- which means I’m getting my money’s worth and not wasting any of the product (or my cash.)

I would like to point out that although the descriptions list these glosses as being flavored- they don’t have a taste- which is fine with me since I have a habit of compulsively licking anything flavored off my lips, anyway. These smell spot-on and absolutely delicious, though (except for the grape one, but that’s just personal preference!) and that’s just as good.

Overall I’m really pleased with this set. These glosses were a lot of fun to try and I’m excited to integrate them into my makeup collection. Plus, when someone asks what I’m wearing- saying the name of the color and showing off the hilariously decorated tube has been wildly entertaining.

Of course, I wanted to try the eye shadow samples, too:

CagesThroughTheAges13

Sample # 1: “Gift of Mercy”

“Maybe some real wolves will find you. Maybe they’ll smell you when the sun goes down. Then you’ll learn what wolves do to dogs.

Blackened plate-steel grey shot through with hints of orange fire. Lip-safe!” – (LINK)

I can’t get over how much I loved this color. While the loose shadow appeared jet black in the packet, which was admittedly a little intimidating to me, it applied on my lids as a really gorgeous dark grey with flecks of copper. This is PERFECT to create a unique smokey eye. In the photo above, I’ve applied “Gift of Mercy” over Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. No other colors were added/used.

CagesThroughTheAges20

Sample # 2: “When The Thrush Knocks”

“Then suddenly when their hope was lowest a red ray of the sun escaped like a finger through a rent in the cloud. A gleam of light came straight through the opening into the bay and fell on the smooth rock-face. The old thrush, who had been watching from a high perch with beady eyes and head cocked on one side, gave a sudden trill. There was a loud crack. A flake of rock split from the wall and fell.” – J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

Late afternoon sunlight: soft coppery yellow-gold with light shimmer. Lip-safe!” – (LINK)

Another beautiful, shimmery (but not TOO shimmery) copper tone. This applied beautifully and brought out the blue in my eyes. In the photo above, I’ve applied “When The Thrush Knocks” over Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. No other colors were added/used.

THE VERDICT

Just when I thought I couldn’t enjoy anything more than the Nicolas Cage lip glosses, these shadow samples completely blew me away. Like the swatches on Shiro’s website suggested- these loose shadows are highly pigmented. Even better? They didn’t budge. At ALL. The shadows stayed in place, just as I applied them, without creasing, flaking, fading, or becoming discolored as the day wore on. I was so, so impressed.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Consider me a life-long fan and customer of Shiro Cosmetics. I’m absolutely smitten with the entire line- from their wide array of colors and finishes to their clever names, descriptions, and packaging. I’m already picking out things for my next order- which will include a Dr. Who-inspired TARDIS blue eye shadow, among many other things.

Loot Crate: January 2014.

LootCrateJanuary20142

Two subscription box posts on the same day?! What’s going on? Well, let me explain. We’re in the middle of another nasty cold snap here in Massachusetts, and I’m attempting to thwart off the beginnings of a cold that’s been going around among my friends and people in my office building. I figured there was no better time to post all the cute things I received in my recent (and my very first) Loot Crate than now while I’m bundled up nice and toasty in bed, sipping tea, avoiding the very loud wind outside- and catching up on e-mails.

Loot Crate is a monthly subscription box, much like GlossyBox and Ipsy, but instead of receiving makeup/cosmetics/skin and hair care samples- Loot Crate sends a bundle of gadgets, toys, desk/home decor, collectibles, books, and odds & ends geared towards geeks and gamers (i.e.- me and 89.9% of my friends.) For less than $20 a month, I decided to treat myself this year and give the service a try.

January’s box, “Launch” was a space-themed collection, and it didn’t disappoint.

LootCrateJanuary20143

Each Loot Crate comes with a little booklet detailing the items in the box, as well as fun articles, interviews (this month featured a Q&A with NASA’s Bobak Ferdowsi,) games, etc. It also comes with a commemorative pin matching the theme of the box. Kicking things off, I received a NASA emblem patch (my aunt’s step-son is an aspiring future employee of NASA, so this will be going to him to wear with pride,) a melting Rubix Cube wall graphic that I plan on sticking in my office, and a Star Trek Communicator Badge- which I’m almost certain will find it’s way on my car after I have it cleaned this week.

LootCrateJanuary20144

LootCrateJanuary20145

Next up was a 2014 Minecraft wall calendar. My best friend Sean is currently addicted to the game (I’m talking up all night, every night, chopping wood and tirelessly building a fortress levels of addicted,) and although his efforts to get me to play haven’t worked (I’m a recovering Warcraft addict, after all,) I’m sure he’ll appreciate my thinking of him when I give him this calendar to hang on his wall.

The cutest item in this month’s box has to be the POP! Vinyl Superman figurine. I have an ever growing collection of “Walking Dead” themed POP! Vinyls in my room, and although I was tempted to add Superman into the mix- I think this one is going to find a home with my friend Evan, who is by far the biggest Superman fan/buff/collector I know. He probably already has three or more of these already- but he’ll be getting another one!

LootCrateJanuary20146

And lastly, you can’t have a space themed box without including some “Star Wars” stuff. I received a set of PocketModel trading/game cards, and a “Galactic Phrase Book.” I plan on flipping through the book, but I think both of these items will be going to my friend Mike, who is to Star Wars what Evan is to Superman. He’s a major fanboy and I know he’ll love these.

Overall, I was really pleased with this box. I received a lot of unique things, most of which I can’t wait to pass on to some of my friends- and the subscription service is a nice, inexpensive break from my usual beauty boxes (not that I don’t love those, too- but it’s fun to get something completely different!) I’m really looking forward to seeing what else Loot Crate has in store for this year.

Ipsy Bag: January 2014 Review.

IpsyBagJanuary20142

IpsyBagJanuary20141

A new year and another 12 months of beauty box subscriptions! My bright blue Ipsy bag arrived in my mailbox recently, and although I knew in advance what I was going to be receiving thanks in part to my updated “Glam Room” on Ipsy’s official website, I was still pleasantly surprised by the size of the samples after I’d opened the bag and peered inside. This month’s theme is “19 Reasons,” for the 19 reasons to make 2014 an amazing new year. I’m not exactly sure why it’s 19 reasons instead of just 5, since each bag comes with only 5 samples- but I won’t nitpick.

What I Received:

Sexy Hair Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner

(MALIN+GOETZ) Mojito Lip Balm (*Full Size!*)

Elizabeth Mott Smooth Shadow in “Penny”

skiin Soothing and Smoothing Eye Cream

Proactiv+ Mark Fading Pads

IpsyBagJanuary20143

Product # 1: Sexy Hair Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner ($17.95)

I’m a big fan of the Sexy Hair line. From their shampoos and conditioners to their styling products and hairsprays. I consistently get good results that don’t damage my hair, fade my color, or make my scalp feel greasy (or dry.) I’ve seen this leave-in conditioner on display at my salon and had always been tempted to try it, but never actually got around to it- so I was pretty excited to be getting a decent sized sample of it in this month’s bag.

This spray is safe for color treated hair (awesome,) and is lightly scented- NOT overpowering (also awesome.) I apply it after my shower and let my curls air dry. My hair feels softer and healthier, but this leave-in doesn’t really do a lot for frizz control. I recommend using another styling product hand in hand with this so you get all the benefits this conditioner has to offer, as well as a little help in taming frizz and fly-aways.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is a really nice leave-in conditioner that’s loaded with good ingredients (soy and cocoa being the big ones,) that nourish the hair without weighing it down. I would absolutely purchase a full size of this to keep my hair healthy, shiny, and strong. Well done, Sexy Hair.

IpsyBagJanuary20144

Product # 2: (MALIN+GOETZ) Mojito Lip Balm ($12)

My lips take a beating in the winter. The frigid temperatures leave them dry, cracked, and sore- and God forbid I get sick. The common cold seems to amplify the horrible condition of my lips in the colder months. Chapsticks rarely work and many lip balms don’t last long at all- so I typically resort to slathering on the Carmex by the hour and hoping for the best. I didn’t expect much from this thick, clear balm (which does really smell like a mojito, by the way,) but I was pleasantly surprised at how non-sticky the texture was, how moisturizing it felt on my lips, and how long it lasted. Even after sipping my morning coffee and taking a few bites of a bagel- the balm didn’t budge at all.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. $12 is a little steep for such a small tube, but this stuff does work well, and if used sparingly, could last a while. Also, the only other downside to this product was the lack of applicator. My Carmex balm has a rounded tip that glides easily over my lips for a smooth distribution of balm, whereas this tube has a flat tip which requires applying the balm with my fingertip. It’s not the end of the world, of course- but it is a minor inconvenience.

IpsyBagJanuary20145

Product # 3: Elizabeth Mott Smooth Shadow in “Penny” ($14.99)

This may have been one of the most confusing samples I’ve ever received in a beauty subscription service. This teeny-tiny pencil is a fraction of the full-sized self-sharpening version, but this sample didn’t twist up- making it useful for only two, maybe three applications at the most. I can’t speak for the other shades this is available in, but “Penny” didn’t really show up at all on my lids. It was a very, very faint copper tone that may have been better suited as a highlighter instead of a shadow or an eyeliner. I was underwhelmed with this.

Would I Purchase?: No. Here’s the thing, if I had been given a little bit more of this sample, I could probably write a better evaluation (i.e.- how it works as a highlighter, as I just mentioned,) but I wasn’t impressed with the small amount I did receive. Although this product does glide on smoothly- the pigmentation isn’t all that great and it had creased and flaked off by mid-afternoon. I’ll pass.

IpsyBagJanuary20146

Product # 4: skiin Soothing and Smoothing Eye Cream ($29.95)

I consider myself fortunate that fine lines and wrinkles are not a concern for me yet,  but I still make a point to keep my delicate eye area as moisturized as possible. This lightweight, non-greasy cream is not just for fine lines and wrinkles, but is also supposed to decrease puffiness and dark circles, too. I used this every night before bed for a week, and while the cream absorbs quickly and left no residue or caused any kind of reaction- which is always a plus- apart from overall softness, I didn’t notice any distinct results.

Would I Purchase?: No. This cream wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t anything extraordinary, either. It did a well enough job at moisturizing my eye area, but I don’t think it’s something that I particularly need considering I get nearly the exact same results with the eye cream I’m currently using. This may be better suited for someone who has concerns with fine lines and/or dark circles as they may get more noticeable results than I did.

IpsyBagJanuary20147

Product # 5: Proactiv+ Mark Fading Pads (Price unknown)

Back when I was in high school, and my skin was at the mercy of stress and teenage hormones, I went on Proactiv in a desperate attempt to clear up some stubborn, painful breakouts along my t-zone. No sooner had I started using Proactiv when I had to stop. The 3-step system actually inflamed my skin, which caused even more breakouts. I haven’t touched the stuff since. Thankfully, my skin has calmed down considerably over time, so the prospect of trying this product wasn’t completely terrifying to me. I have a couple of very faint scars on my cheek from a past allergic reaction that are easily covered with makeup, but I wanted to see if these pads could lighten them even more than time and patience already had.

I received four pads, and by the time I used the last one- the scars hadn’t faded much. My skin felt pretty nice, though- and very clean- after each use. These pads didn’t dry my skin out or cause any kind of irritation, and I think they’d make a pretty decent makeup remover for those with oily skin.

Would I Purchase? Yes! I wouldn’t be opposed to taking a box of these when I travel for easy makeup removal or just as a quick and convenient way to deeply cleanse my skin after a flight/late night/etc. I’m not sure if Proactiv sells these pads separately, or if you’d have to purchase an entire kit to get them (their website doesn’t make shopping easy,) but if I ever see any in one of those kiosks or vending machines at the mall/shopping centers- I’ll more than likely pick some up.

Overall I was very pleased with my January Ipsy bag. I may not have fallen head over heels in love with every product I received, but I did enjoy most of them and I found a couple of good ones I’d definitely purchase in the future. This bag was such an upgrade from the December one- and I’m hoping February’s is just as good.

A Bloody Good Birthday.

MyBirthday20141

MyBirthday20142

I know that getting older can be a terrifying and dreaded thing- especially for those of us in our late twenties as we inch closer and closer to 30, but personally, I embrace it. With age comes more experiences, more possibilities, and sure- more tough choices- and while your body and desires may change from what they were in, say, your teens or early twenties (i.e. staying out and partying all night or gorging on greasy fast food can and will come back to haunt you,) there’s nothing wrong with aging. Getting older is a privilege that many people unfortunately don’t always get to have.

Having a birthday right smack in the middle of a work week blows, however. Such was the case with my 28th birthday yesterday. It’s hard to coordinate plans to celebrate with friends and family when you get out of work in the evening and have to be up at 7 a.m. the next day- so when my mom told me to come by after I’d left the office for the night because she had a surprise for me- I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d already spent most of the day completely stunned by the amount of incredibly sweet messages and birthday wishes that poured in from friends and family from all over. It was overwhelming- in the best way possible!

What I got when I arrived at my mom’s house was a “Walking Dead” themed surprise party with some of my relatives. When my mom knows I’m a big fan of something- she goes all out. The Daryl Dixon cake pictured above was something she had made for me that I loved so much I didn’t want to cut it at first.

MyBirthday20143

MyBirthday20144

MyBirthday20145

MyBirthday20146

Apart from the cake, my “Walking Dead”-geekiness was further fueled with toys, a huge poster, a shooter-style video game, the best socks ever created, and a W.W.D.D.D t-shirt. Also? This:

MyBirthday20147

Yeah. That’d be a life-size Daryl cardboard cut-out. I told you all my mom went all out, guys. I may be 28 now, but my space will no doubt resemble that of a teenaged fangirl/fanboy’s by the time I’m done moving and rearranging all of this stuff into it. It’s going to be awesome.

Another non-“Walking Dead” related surprise came in the form of an ASUS Transformer Book my mom bought me in an attempt to make my staying connected while traveling 100000000x easier. I was speechless. For years I’ve been taking my laptop everywhere, and for years it’s been such a pain in the ass to carry around or fly with. I’d been meaning to finally downsize to a decent and thinner tablet for the longest time, but have never actually gotten around to it- instead relying on my SmartPhone when on the road. Out of all the wonderful, geeky, and totally “me” presents I received this year- the ASUS was the one that nearly moved me to tears.

Yesterday was truly one of the best birthdays I think I’ve ever had. Between the flood of calls and messages I received to the completely fantastic surprises my family had planned for me- it was an amazing, wonderful day- even if I had to work!

Thanks to all who wished me a good one! It meant the world to me!

Despite the fact that it was varying between snowing heavily/freezing rain all morning and well into the afternoon, I agreed to visit Roger Williams Park Zoo in Rhode Island with my mom and my cousin Paige on Saturday. I know there are many mixed feelings about zoos, especially when it comes to the ethical treatment of animals, but one of the things I’ve always loved about Roger Williams is how well they take care of their animals and their conservation efforts to save endangered species and educate the public about the benefits of going green as it pertains to the environment. The staff is dedicated, educated, and very compassionate- and the animals are well fed and have plenty of space to move around freely.

The zoo is open year-round, and although some of the exhibits change in the colder months, we still saw plenty of animals we hadn’t expected- including zebras, giraffes, elephants, and red pandas- and it was pretty amazing to see how they reacted to the weather. While it was snowing, the zebras and wildebeests kept running out from underneath an awning where they had been eating to check things out . When the snow turned to freezing rain, the red pandas (my favorite!), who seemed to be enjoying sliding around in it at first- eventually looked at each other in what I can only describe as a “screw this” kind of way and retreated indoors where it was warm. The only animals that didn’t seem fascinated or phased by the snow/ice were a huge snow leopard (obviously,) a couple of sleeping moon bears, and the red wolves.

There was an indoor area kept nice and warm for the giraffes and elephants to eat and exercise. I had a lot of fun with an elephant named Kate who kept approaching where I was standing and hamming it up for my camera every chance she got. She even cut in front of the other elephants- Alice, I believe- when she saw me taking her picture.

When we left, we were soaked through and chilled to the bone (we never think to bring umbrellas to outings like these for some inexplicable reason,) but it was a nice time. I’d like to go back during the Spring or Summer to see some of the exhibits geared towards more warmer climates- especially the Australian animals.

Review: “Devil’s Due”

Comment 1 Standard

DevilsDuePosterWhat happens when you take take the concept of “Rosemary’s Baby,” and then proceed to remove all of the elements that made that movie good and instead replace them with a plot riddled with loopholes, bad acting, predictable jump scares, and the nausea-inducing and overused hand-held camera style of filming that has plagued the horror genre for the past few years?

You get “Devil’s Due.”

It’s been a while since I sat down to do a good old fashioned horror movie review. Not only because there hasn’t been a whole lot of new horror movies that have piqued my interest as of late, but because my “Horrors of Netflix” review series back in October was pretty traumatic (I’ll be doing it again this October, however- so apparently not traumatic enough.) I saw previews for “Devil’s Due” right around the time they released trailers for “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,” which I contemplated seeing since I’d already suffered through the last two in theaters- but last night I ultimately I decided to pass on “getting motion sickness while this franchise tries to desperately tie the plot from the first two movies into these sequels as much as possible,” and instead went with “getting motion sickness while this seemingly new franchise sets the bar for horror even lower.”

Before you click the “READ MORE” link below, I do want to give the obligatory warning that I will be breaking this movie down and posting a TON of detailed spoilers. If any of you want to see “Devil’s Due” for yourself without knowing what happens- DO NOT CONTINUE READING.

You’ve been warned.

Last Sunday, on one of my usual drives through Western Massachusetts to unwind, I stopped in Historical Deerfield as the sun was setting and went for a nice, brisk walk around the main street of old colonial houses before it got too dark, and too cold outside. The museums and most of the shops were closed, and with the exception of a couple of patrons going into a nearby restaurant- I was one of the only people out and about. It was really peaceful, and very, very pretty.

These were a few of my favorite shots from some of the buildings that caught my eye.

Growing up, I had used to want to live in a centuries old home like the ones in Historical Deerfield, until I visited a few on various class trips and heard how creaky the walls and floors were, or felt first-hand how drafty they could be in the colder months. Now I’m just a fond observer, admiring their exteriors- which look especially pretty during winter.

The Liebster Award – Take 3!

Comment 1 Standard

LiebsterAwardTalk about flattering! For the third time since I started this blog, I’ve been nominated for the Liebster Award- this time the honor coming from the sensational Nikki over at Girl Behind the Glasses. Nikki’s blog is fairly new, but it’s a must-read if you love makeup and books (which I most certainly do.)

Thank you for this award, Nikki! You’re a sweetheart.

Here’s how the Liebster Award works:

1. The nominee must link back to the blogger who nominated them.

2. The nominee must state 11 facts about themselves, and then answer the 11 question provided for them by the person who nominated them.

3. They nominee must then nominate bloggers with less than 200 followers, who they think deserve the recognition, and pose 11 new questions for them to answer.

4. They must then tell the bloggers who they have nominated about the award.

The most difficult part about posts like these are coming up with 11 random facts about myself. I’ve said it before and I will absolutely say it again- but I don’t consider myself all that interesting! But regardless- here’s 11 more facts I managed to think of:

1. One of my all-time favorite TV shows (besides “The Walking Dead” and “Breaking Bad,” of course,) is “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” I have so many fond memories of watching syndicated episodes on Saturday mornings with my dad when I was a kid and laughing hysterically- even if I didn’t understand the more “adult” jokes at the time. I think my love of suffering and subsequently shredding terrible horror and Sci-Fi movies stems from watching Joel (then Mike!) Crow, and Tom Servo do it every week. I fully plan on owning every DVD box set in the immediate future so I can relive the Saturday morning antics.

2. I’d love to try my hand at making a costume and cosplaying at a comic convention soon. It just looks like so much fun (even though that SyFy’s “Heroes of Cosplay” show is pretty awful,) and I have quite a few friends who have done it and have loved it. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and comic conventions are kind of like a big Halloween party- except without terrible candy corn. Count me in!

3. I played Mary Ingalls in my 5th grade class’ production of “Little House on the Prairie.” Determined to nail my part, I had found out from my mom that Mary was blind- and proceeded to deliberately bump into everyone and everything during rehearsals until my teacher became so frustrated with me that she scrapped the blindness thing all together. The same teacher had also cast me as Europa when we had a “Greek Mythology Week” later on that year. When I started doing research and asking questions about why Zeus kidnapped Europa and brought her to Crete to “ravish” her (and what “ravish” meant,) I was told to stop reading the Greek Mythology textbook immediately.

BroodyLookingMe

December ’13.

4. The only celebrity and/or historical figure I can say I’m related to (and it’s a pretty far reach,) is John Wayne. He was my grandmother’s (on my father’s side) cousin. I never really cared much for his movies while growing up, though.

5. When I was 16, I bleached my then naturally dark brown hair to a platinum blonde- and then cut it into a bob. I was trying to look like Debbie Harry, although most people told me I resembled 1980’s Madonna (which I didn’t take as a compliment.) My hair was fried for months until I eventually dyed it back to brown, and no sooner had I done so when No Doubt’s “It’s My Life” music video debuted- and Gwen Stefani was rocking my former blonde bobbed hairstyle. Damn it, Gwen.

6. The most recent movie I’ve seen in theaters was “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and it might very well be one of the best movies I’ve ever watched. I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s a really, really beautiful film. Ben Stiller did such an amazing job (both as an actor and as the director!)

7. Every single one of my pets from the time I was little up until now have had the middle name “Eggmus.” I have no idea why or where it came from. It was just something I started doing when I was seven and it’s stuck since then. My first cat was Zero Eggmus. The cat I adopted after him was Daphne Eggmus. My current cat’s name is Stella Eggmus and my dog’s name is Oliver Eggmus. I don’t think I’ll ever stop.

8. I’m 5’7″ tall, which makes me roughly the same height as my girlfriends when they’re wearing heels, or a giant by comparison when they aren’t. I know a lot of short people, apparently.

9. Now that I’ve seen the Rolling Stones live, the next band on my “have to see” list is Coldplay. I don’t care what anyone says- I adore them and I shamelessly sing along to their music at the top of my lungs while I’m driving. “The Scientist” still gets me emotional and “Paradise” is just way too fun to blast while I’m on my way to work.

10. My very first stuffed animal, a gift from my uncle when I was a baby, was a tabby cat I named Felix. I brought it everywhere with me all through my toddler years and up until I started Kindergarten. I still have it. It’s in my bedroom- and even though the years have taken a bit of a toll on it, and it’s a little ratty- it’s still in one piece.

11. I’ve consistently had a Marilyn Monroe calendar hanging in my room every year for the past 12-13 years. I love Marilyn (“Seven Year Itch” is the best!)- although I cringe every time someone misquotes her or incorrectly credits her with a popular phrase or saying. I just think she was beautiful, and her story was so tragic and so telling of life in Hollywood for women back then (and sometimes even now.)

The 10 questions Nikki asked me are:

1. Why did you start blogging?

Oh, I hate to sound like a broken record, because my answer is always the same. Taken from the last time I received the Liebster, since my thoughts haven’t changed at all!:

“My blogging days began way back in my sophomore year of high school, where I’d write about the guy I had a crush on, homework assignments I didn’t want to do, PG-13 movies I was excited to go see with my friends (if our parents were willing to lend us money drive us to the theater, of course, since none of us were old enough to work or have our licenses), trips to the mall, and school drama. At first, it was just a way for me to chronicle my life and network with other people my age- like a diary that I shared with others- but after a while it sort of became my creative outlet and evolved over the course of more than a decade into what this blog is today.”

2. What’s the story behind the name of your blog?

Well, I’m a redhead, which explains part of it- but I’m also a full-time paralegal and a big “Legally Blonde” fan. I was inspired by the flawlessness of Elle Woods and her ability to maintain her bubbly, sweet, pink-loving personality while still being really smart, going after what she wants, and not taking any crap from anyone who doubted her. I consider myself the redheaded Elle Woods- without the chihuahua.

3. If you could pick only one beauty product, whether you have it or not right now, to use for a whole month and nothing else, what would it be and why?

Coconut oil, because it’s a universal beauty product with a ton of uses. It’s good for removing makeup, repairing hair, softening cuticles, as an under eye serum, as a mouthwash, etc. One jar would last me longer than a month- so I’d be all set.

4. What was the last book you’ve read, be it fiction or non-fiction? What is it about and would you recommend it to others?

I just re-read Pamela Des Barres’ “Let’s Spend the Night Together.” It’s pretty scandalous, considering Pamela and her former groupie friends all spill the juicy details of some of rock n’ roll’s most legendary stars’ bedroom antics- but it’s also quite entertaining and very comical if you’re at all curious about the things that classic rock Gods used to be able to get away with.

5. What are the things you can’t live without? At least 5 but not more than 10.

1. My mom, because she’s one of my best friends. 2. My dog, because he’s my best four-legged friend. 3. My ever expanding circle of friends and acquaintances. 4. My camera, because I always have to be ready to capture a moment. 5. My cell phone, because it’s connected to everything and everyone! 6.  My music collection. 7. A notebook and a pen, so I can write on the go until my hand cramps up. 8. Hair ties- because sometimes I just have to get these curls off of my face.

6. Who is your style icon? It could be anyone, a friend, your mother or someone famous.

I had been asked this question the last time I received the Liebster, and I had answered with Bettie Page- but I have so many style icons I draw inspiration from, so to give a different answer, I’m going to say Edie Sedgwick. Edie’s tragic life and even more tragic death aside, the girl knew how to dress. She made the most basic ensembles look brilliant- and her makeup was on point. I’ve tried more than once (and unsuccessfully) to re-create Edie’s bold liner look. Someday I’ll get it right. Someday…

7. What camera are you using for your pictures now and what kind do you really want to use?

I currently shoot with a Canon PowerShot SX500 IS, and I absolutely love it. I’m completely content with the quality of my photos and the features the camera has.

8. What is your current obsession? Anything under the sun!

While “The Walking Dead” is on hiatus until next month, my current TV obsession is “The Spoils of Babylon” on IFC. It’s hilarious. Also, for the past few months I have been unable to stop listening to Parov Stelar, an Austrian musician, who combines jazz/big band music with catchy and funky beats. I always end up dancing whenever I hear “Catgroove” or “Booty Swing” among a ton of others. It’s so good.

9. Are you a cat or dog lover? Or another pet perhaps?

I love animals in general. I have a cat and a dog, and even though they can both drive me nuts at times- they’re the best. I’m just going to give a wildcard answer and say that I’m a sloth person. I love sloths.

10. Tell me something random about yourself.

Oh dear. Those 11 facts above weren’t random enough? Hmm. Let me think.  I’m currently wearing socks that have little martini glasses all over them! How’s that?

And here are my questions!

1. What is the most courageous thing you’ve ever done?

2. If you had to prepare a time capsule with 10 items to show future generations what your life was like- what would you pick and why?

3. What was your most embarrassing style moment? (if it makes you feel any better, mine were jeans coated in glitter, circa 2002/2003.)

4. What is your favorite inspirational/motivational quote?

5. Name five things you like about yourself (and it can be anything! I just think it’s nice to remind yourself of your good qualities.)

6. What’s your favorite TV show, be it still on the air or cancelled?

7. If you could vacation in any destination in the world, with money not being an issue- where would you go, and why?

8. Which one of your blog posts is your favorite (so far?)

9. How do you pamper yourself after a stressful day/week?

10. Who is your style icon, and why?

11. What’s one thing you want to accomplish in 2014?

I have a few new followers here at Legally Redhead, and there’s no better way to get to know them than to nominate some of them for this award!

My Makeup Collection.

Comments 3 Standard

The other day I was talking to the lovely Imogen about her wanting to go through and organize her cosmetics, which is something I do every couple of months in order to discard expired and empty products, or gift duplicate and unused ones. I’ve drastically narrowed down my excess stuff over time to things I use on a regular basis, as opposed to just frivolously buying and hoarding makeup I only use once in a great while, which has ultimately saved me money and space in my bedroom and bathroom. My beauty box subscriptions (GlossyBox and Ipsy,) have also occasionally added to my collection by sending me full-sized products that I can integrate into my rotation if I like them enough.

Imogen had wanted to know what I had for cosmetics as of late, and I thought I’d show rather than just tell.

So here’s my current makeup collection (sans-makeup brushes and skin care products:)

While my makeup collection may be surprisingly small-ish to some, I hoard nail polishes like they’re going out of style. I’ve recently run out of a couple of shades, including a beautiful jade green and a glittery dark brown- but pictured above is what’s left.

Chanel: “Intermezzo,” “Orange Fizz,” and “Vamp.”

OPI: “Bubble Bath,” “Bright Lights – Big Color,” “Absolutely Alice,” and “Can’t Let Go.”

Nails, Inc.: “Victoria” and “Baker Street.”

Misc.: Nailtini Straight Up Color Nail Lacquer in “Champagne,” Zoya Nail Polish in “Mason,” SpaRitual Nail Polish in “Spice of Life,” NAILUV Gel Polish in “Berry Sweetie,” L.A. Colors Color Craze in “Glistening Purple,” and Salley Hansen’s Hard as Nails XTreme Wear in “Mellow Yellow.”

And there you have it! That’s everything. I plan on adding to my collection in the coming weeks (The Naked 3 eyeshadow pallet is calling my name,) but so far, I’ve been getting along quite nicely with what I’ve limited myself to.

I had no idea what a “polar vortex” was until the moment I stepped outside to head to work this morning and immediately wanted to retreat back into the warmth of my bed until Spring came around instead of desperately trying to get my car door handles to thaw out and unstick. The below zero temperatures that have blanketed most of the country, causing mass school & business cancellations, delayed flights, and essentially “The Day After Tomorrow” conditions finally reached Massachusetts late last night/early this morning, which was unexpected- at least to me- considering yesterday afternoon it didn’t feel too frigid outside.

This past weekend, while still chilly, was bearable enough where I was able to hike for a couple of hours in Western Massachusetts to get some fresh air and not come down with hypothermia. The photos above were snapped at some of the prettier areas I saw (minus the picture of me, obviously.) My favorite shot has to be of the random snowman I found in the middle of a field during my trek through the snow. At least I thought it was a field. It wasn’t until I was approaching the snowman to take a close-up when my foot slipped on something slick, and I realized I was actually walking on the middle of a pond that had frozen over. Yikes.

Regardless, the scenery was very pretty, and the cold (and clean!) air felt refreshing. I’m glad I went before temperatures dropped as much as they have over the last 24 hours. Now, after an incredibly long shower in which I just turned the water up as hot as it could go and contemplated spending the night under the shower head- I’m bundled up in thermal pajamas, fuzzy socks, a big, comfy bathrobe, and a couple of flannel blankets- and I have no intention of moving until it’s time to go to work again tomorrow.

Stay safe and warm, everyone!
