Happy Easter, everyone. I spent the afternoon at my mom’s house with cousins, aunts, and uncles, having dinner and hoarding chocolate bunnies like it’s my job. Now I’m settling in for the night to enjoy (see: scream and cry at) the season 3 finale of “The Walking Dead” (how can it be over already?!), getting ready for opening day of the 2013 Red Sox season, and bracing myself for the work week ahead.

March was a blast. Between a wild St. Patrick’s Day Weekend to closing out the month with an equally wild trip to San Diego- it seems I was going non-stop, and loved every minute of it. With the seasons changing, I also experienced a bit of a personal transformation in terms of re-evaluating and reflecting on myself, my friendships/relationships, and my future: including re-discovering my aspiration to eventually make the move out to the West Coast once and for all after I had put it on the back-burner for nearly two years.

April will hopefully be as lovely and as busy as March was. I have a couple of mini-road trips planned for early on this coming month, which should be fun now that it’s nearly warm enough where I can drive with the windows down and my music playing nice and loud.

GLOSSYBOX: March 2013 Review.

March2013GlossyBox1

March2013GlossyBox2

A few days before I left for California, I received my March 2013 GlossyBox in the mail. I packed a couple of the samples in my suitcase to try while I was out West, and recently finished the others now that I’m back home. The theme for this month’s box, “Spring Fling”, revolved around products to help the transition from cold and bleak winter into the warmer, sunnier Spring season that seems to have finally arrived here in New England!

What I Received:

Sebastian Professional “Shaper Fierce” Hairspray

ModelCo Cheek + Lip Tint in “Rosy Red”

Elite Models Intensity Eye Pencil (Full Size!)

Prestiche Essential Oil Bar Soap

Koh Gen Do Oriental Plants Emollient Cream

I also received a $40 voucher valid for Prestiche’s online store, which I’m planning on applying towards one of their “Wonder Body Polishes”. With warmer weather on it’s way, that means I have to keep my skin exfoliated and smooth for when I break out the flirty dresses and shorter skirts.

Product #1: Sebastian Professional “Shaper Fierce” Hairspray ($17.00)

Curly hair + hairspray is a tricky combination. In some cases, hairsprays can smooth down frizz and help keeps curls defined. In other cases, they only succeed in making curls crunchy and weighed down. Over the years, I’ve found only a couple of hairsprays that have been lightweight enough to keep the bounce in my curls but still strong enough to tame any flyaway strands.

In January’s GlossyBox, I was introduced to Sebastian Professional’s “Potion 9” Styling Cream and had loved it- so I had my expectations pretty high when I received this spray that promised to not only give my hair a flexible hold, but would also add a “high shine gloss” effect as well.

Unfortunately, this spray was one of the crunch-creators, and no matter how many times I tried to brush or tousle my hair to break up the product, if only a little, it built up fast and dried heavy, making my hair and scalp feel anything but soft. The spray also smelled HORRIBLE. Seriously nauseating. I ended up feeling really self-conscious about how crunchy my hair looked and the way it smelled most of the morning after I’d spritzed some on before work.

Would I Purchase?: No. I’ll be sticking to the aforementioned lightweight sprays (one of which is made by Garnier Fructis and not only smells delicious- but makes my hair so soft and shiny) the next time I need a little extra hold. This stuff was just too heavy for me, and I can’t get over how bad the scent was.

Product #2: ModelCo Cheek + Lip Tint in “Rosy Red” ($24.00)

Considering how much I loved the cheek, eye, and lip tint cream I received in my March BeautyArmy kit, I was open to try this gel, packaged in a precision point tube, which claimed to give a natural, “freshly pinched” look to my cheeks.  Upon applying a couple of drops to my fingertips to tap onto my face, I was immediately concerned with how dark the color appeared. The only way I could describe it was that it had the same look and consistency of food coloring. When I began blending, however, the dark red faded into a rosy pink.

ModelCoTint1

ModelCoTint2

While the consistency was nice and very lightweight, it took a few more drops than I expected to get a noticeable flush to my cheeks- and even after that, the tint ended up making my cheeks look more like I had a patchy case of rosacea instead of a beautiful, natural blush.

My lips didn’t fare much better. Not only was the tint drying to the point of it being painful, but it didn’t spread evenly at all, and my pout looked chapped and dry.

ModelCoTint3

Would I Purchase?: No. As unique as the texture of the tint formula was, This product just didn’t work well for me at all. I’ll stick to my cream or powder blushes for my cheeks, and with more moisturizing colors and balms for my lips.

Product #3: Elite Models Intensity Eye Pencil ($14)

This soft, creamy pencil eyeliner applied like a dream, giving me an even, precise, and mess-free application along my upper lid. This particular brand is long-lasting and waterproof, but is formulated with Shea butter and vitamin E, making it safe and non-drying for the sensitive eye area- even after wearing it for hours. Although I experienced a little fading in the outer corners of my eyes as the day wore on, for the most part the liner didn’t budge and didn’t irritate my lids the way other pencil liners have done in the past.

EliteModelLiner1

EliteModelLiner2

Would I Purchase?: Yes! Absolutely!  This is such a quality product. It’s gentle and easy to apply, gives a great amount of color, stays in place all day, but comes off easily with no fuss with a basic makeup remover. I’d love to try more of these in different shades!

Product #4: Prestiche Essential Oil Bar Soap (16.99)

I’m sure I’ve mentioned before how much I love all-natural soaps. I don’t like putting anything loaded with chemicals on my skin, as I find it will either be extremely drying, or the complete opposite of the spectrum- and make me feel super greasy. This hypoallergenic soap, loaded with antioxidants, essential oils, moisturizers, and vitamins not only smelled wonderful, but lathered nicely, and made my skin feel so, so soft and conditioned without leaving any kind of oily residue behind.

Also, unlike some other all-natural soaps, this bar didn’t disintegrate after one use. I still have plenty left over to last me a while, meaning that this product also gives you your money’s worth, too.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I liked this soap the second I felt how silky it made my skin during the very first use- and how it stayed that way long after my shower. It’s made of really great ingredients, and should last a while.

Product #5: Koh Gen Do Oriental Plants Emollient Cream ($123)

For $123 a pop, I expected this botanical extract cream to be nothing short of a miracle in a jar. I applied it before bed, and hoped to wake up with a glowing, radiant, flawless complexion. The cream absorbed quickly, felt lovely, and didn’t have any artificial fragrances to it, which was definitely a plus- but I didn’t see or feel a significant difference to my skin, even after using it for another few days. It certainly didn’t do anything that any less-expensive creams couldn’t do.

Would I Purchase?: No. This cream, as nice as it felt, isn’t worth the money, in my opinion. There are so many other alternatives out there that could not only give me better results, but wouldn’t cost as much, either.

2 out of 5 products in the March GlossyBox were fantastic and were definitely things I’d purchase in the future. The other 3, not so much. I’d say the box was a bust, but the $40 Prestiche voucher was a pleasant surprise and definitely made up for the lackluster hairspray, cheek + lip tint, and moisturizer.

California Dreamin’…

SanDiegoSpringBreak1

The first time I ever visited Southern California, specifically San Diego, it was 2007, I was in my very early twenties, and I had gone to visit friends who were both performing, and working, at an all-day, outdoor music festival. I made a weekend out of it, sticking around an extra few days to take a look around and spend time with said friends who lived in the area. It didn’t take long for me to fall completely head over heels in love with the city and all it had to offer a wide-eyed, and (then) innocent girl like me. I wasn’t a jet-setting, world-weary traveler. At the time I’d barely gotten used to Boston, had taken NYC by storm a couple of times, and had even traveled to London, England the previous Summer for what will forever be known as the “Dynamic Duo Tour de Force”, as my best friend Samantha had come with me for the sight-seeing and the Reading/Leeds Festival experience- but I knew San Diego was different from anywhere I’d been before. I could feel it almost immediately.

Not only is the weather perfect nearly year-round, making outdoor activities and exercise all the more fun, but the scenery is picturesque, the nightlife options- bars and restaurants- are so diverse and easily accessible for whatever mood you’re in, and the San Diego music and art scene, in my opinion, is one of the best in the country.

Six years and countless trips later, I’m not as wide-eyed (and definitely not as innocent) as I used to be, but I’m just as enamored with San Diego as I was the very first time I visited- maybe even more so now that a good chunk of my dearest friends and family have moved there, and in surrounding areas, over time. Some visits have been great, others not so much, for different reasons, but I always go back because I feel so “at home” there. People I know, friends, family, new and old alike- have told me on more than one occasion that I belong there- that I need to make the move.

SanDiegoSpringBreak2

I had said in 2011 that I had every intention of moving out west, but as most of you know, and have probably experienced yourselves, life has a way of throwing curve balls when we least expect it. No sooner had I expressed my desire to leave New England when my father was diagnosed with cancer, and any and all plans to relocate immediately came to a grinding halt while I spent the next year at his side until his untimely death in the Summer of 2012. The idea was, obviously, put on the back-burner ever since- until now.

My father knew how much I wanted to move to San Diego, and he supported the decision (almost) 100%. Of course I was, and still am, his little girl- and the idea of me moving across the country to a place he hadn’t been in a long, long time- made him uneasy, but he wanted me to be happy, and as long as I flew back to Massachusetts from time to time, or found a suitable sofa for him to sleep on when he dropped by to check on me, probably unannounced knowing how my dad was- he had nothing but good luck and well wishes for me. I feel like holding myself back by not doing what I truly want to do, or going where my heart is telling me to go would make him so disappointed if he were still here- and I want so much to make him proud of me, wherever he is.

During my recent stay, I discussed the possibility of going through with the move with a couple of friends out there. They were so unbelievably eager, as well as helpful, with giving me advice and ideas of where to look for a safe, suitable place. One of my longtime friends, Duncan, even suggested we become roommates- which, if anyone knows Duncan- knows that it would be AWESOME.

Nothing is set in stone just yet, but I’m staying optimistic and positive that things will work themselves out in due time. I’m going to continue saving my money, planning, and preparing- and hopefully soon, I’ll be a permanent California girl, and not just a frequent visitor.

Closet Crushes: Hint of Mint.

Leave a comment Standard

HintofMint1Greetings from San Diego! I’m taking a break from soaking up the sun and visiting friends to share the outfit I put together for a date I have a little later on tonight. Feeling inspired by the beautiful weather here, which feels more like Spring than back home does, I decided to incorporate a little pastel into my wardrobe- specifically a really soft, fresh mint tone. I didn’t want to overdo it, so I made these lovely cuffed lace shorts, which I picked up for under $20 at Forever 21 (CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE) the focal point of the ensemble, keeping it subdued by pairing them with a basic white top and brown, braided heeled sandals from ALDO (CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE). I like my legs, and these shorts are a perfect cut and fit to show them off a little.

I’ve also added a couple more pops of mint color with my jewelry and my nail polish. I’m loving this bold, chain-style plastic necklace, which matches the color of the shorts perfectly.

For my makeup, which I haven’t applied yet (because I want to look impossibly fresh-faced when my gentleman caller arrives), I plan to keep it simple. Rosy cheeks, subtle nude-eye shadow and a sheer pink lip balm- however, I will also be lightly lining my eyes with Chanel’s Stylo Yeux Waterproof Eyeliner in “Jade” (CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE). Don’t be fooled by the name. The color isn’t the traditional dark green typically associated with jade. It’s a beautiful, long-lasting aquamarine tone that will compliment this outfit perfectly and really makes the blue in my eyes stand out.

HintofMint2

HintofMint3

HintofMint4

Now that my outfit is all set, I’ve got to go get my face ready, spritz on some perfume, and continuously nibble on some breath mints- just in case.

Talk to you all soon!

BeautyArmy: March 2013 Review.

Leave a comment Standard

BeautyArmyMarch2013

I’m taking a break from packing my suitcase for an early flight I’m catching tomorrow morning to the West Coast for a long weekend getaway. I recently finished the trials in my March 2013 BeautyArmy box, and wanted to post my reviews before I move on to the samples I received yesterday when this month’s GlossyBox arrived at my door.

What I Received (Chose):

SKYN ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels

INEKE Hothouse Flower Perfume

Immuno-Viva “Sunset” Tea

Whip Hand Cosmetics, Loose Pigment Eyeshadow in “Green Beret”

SKINN COSMETICS Color Touch Eye, Cheek, & Lip Glow in “Teen Tone”.

GRAND CENTRAL BEAUTY Skin Perfecting Polisher

Product #1: SKYN ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels ($30.00 for 8 pairs)

I’m weary of putting any kind of firming/anti-aging cream or gel near my eyes. I rarely stray from my “Vaseline around the eyes at nighttime” routine, as I’ve mentioned in the past, but these cooling eye gel pads caught my attention, and most of the reviews I read were extremely positive, so I decided to break with tradition and give them a shot. I received one pair of the pads, and applied them earlier tonight while I was going through my itinerary of what to pack for my trip.

The pads were mess-free, which was automatically an improvement from the Vaseline regime, and they stayed in place after I pressed them onto my skin. The directions on the package said to leave the pads on for up to ten minutes. I decided to live dangerously and keep them on for 15 before removing them, and even now I can still feel the tingling, cool sensation that started almost immediately after the application. Around my eyes looked firmer and smoother, and felt soft to the touch. I was, and still am, impressed!

Would I Purchase?: Yes! The price for these pads is a little steep, especially just for eight pairs, but they aren’t something someone like me would use every day. They’d be perfect for having after a long, exhausting day, or for packing in your purse for an emergency pick-me-up before going into a big meeting at work or for freshening up before going out for a night on the town.

Product #2: INEKE Hothouse Flower Perfume ($95.00)

This perfume, advertised as being “highly addictive” (and thus making me want to see/smell it for myself), was pretty potent when I first spritzed some on the insides of my wrists. Smelling strongly of florals, musk, and a hint of citrus, it was powerful, but gradually weakened as it blended with my skin. What I was left with was a lightweight, more musky scent. Unfortunately, it didn’t last like other fragrances I’ve used and tried in the past, and within a few hours, it had all but faded completely.

Would I Purchase?: No. The scent was lovely, but the longevity could use some improvement. I like my fragrances to last so that I don’t have to frequently reapply them throughout the day, but this one just all but disappeared a little too quickly for my liking.

Product #3: Immuno-Viva “Sunset” Tea ($11.95 for 20 teabags)

In February’s BeautyArmy box, I had tried the Immuno-Viva “Sunrise” tea and really enjoyed it. I saw it’s counterpart, the “Sunset” tea, available, and wanted to see if I liked it just as much. Like “Sunrise”, this white tea is packed with antioxidants to help boost immune health and concentration. Unlike “Sunrise”, however, which is supposed to energize and awaken, this blend is made to naturally relax and help support a more restful sleep.

Taste wise, this tea was a little bland. It wasn’t strong, which to me, is a good thing- but I felt it could have used a little something extra to give it’s flavor a kick. Maybe a hint of vanilla, or even mint. I’m sure it’s nothing a little extra sugar couldn’t take care of, but adding sugar to a nighttime relaxation tea just seems a little contradictory to me.

“Sunrise” tea hadn’t made me feel anymore energized or alert than usual, but the “Sunset” tea did seem to relax me quite well. Granted, I was drinking it in bed, wrapped up in fleece blankets, and was pretty tired to begin with, so there’s a good chance there were some other contributing factors that assisted in my overall sleepy feeling, but I’ll go ahead and give the tea all the credit.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I’m sure there are ways to boost what is otherwise a pretty blasé flavor, but this is a good, light, end-of-the-day tea, and it’s filled with natural ingredients that are good for you, too.

Product #4: Whip Hand Cosmetics, Loose Pigment Eyeshadow in “Green Beret” ($11.90)

Also in February’s BeautyArmy box, I had tried Whip Hand Cosmetics’ “Medal of Honor” loose pigment eyeshadow, and had loved it’s shimmer and long-last wear. I wanted to check out other shades, and when I saw that this green shadow was available, I jumped at the chance.

Upon applying this shadow over my primer, two things were clear right away: 1. the color appeared more grey than green, and 2. I needed to use a lot of it since I could absolutely NOT get it to spread evenly over my eyelid. Once I got the shadow as even and as dark as I could, and blended it a little, the finished color wasn’t bad- but it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, either.

GreenBeretShadow1

GreenBeretShadow2

Would I Purchase?: No. As much as I loved “Medal of Honor” last month, this product was a let-down. I have other green eyeshadows in my makeup collection that are more vibrant and easier to apply than this particular one was. I’ll stick with those and pass on “Green Beret”.

Product #5: SKINN COSMETICS Color Touch Eye, Cheek, & Lip Glow in “Teen Tone” ($17.00)

The second I ran my finger across the top of this creamy 3-in-1 makeup and began applying it to the apples of my cheeks, I was smitten. This lightweight formula, in a beautiful, natural looking rosy shade, applied like a dream and stayed put almost all day- giving me a glow throughout my workday and well into the evening.

My only problem, and this usually happens with most multi-purpose makeups like this, is that while the color was gorgeous on my cheeks and my eyes, it looked a little chalky when I applied it on my lips. It also went on to dry my lips out pretty bad, and I eventually had to wipe it off and apply a different lip color.

TeenToneColorCream

Would I Purchase?: Yes! Despite the bad result I got with my lips, this product was gorgeous everywhere else I applied it. You don’t need a lot of it, either- which means that it’ll last you a long time.

Product #6: GRAND CENTRAL BEAUTY Skin Perfecting Polisher ($38.00)

I wasn’t entirely sure what this product was or how it was used until it arrived in my box and I had the chance to review the directions and feel the texture. I don’t know how many of you have ever been badgered by mall kiosk people (the people who have booths in the middle of the mall who always try to stop you so they can show you some overpriced miracle beauty/haircare product that never works quite as well when you get it home as it did when they were applying it or using it on you), but this reminded me of a mask I tried once in my late teens after being stopped while I was doing some shopping.

To use this product, which feels almost like a serum and less like an exfoliator, you apply it to your face, and then massage it in for about 30 seconds to a minute. After that, you’ll feel dead “skin cells” begin to roll away. From there, you can either rinse or pat your face with a towel, and your skin is supposed to look and feel more exfoliated, radiant, and  toned.

While my skin did feel a little tighter after I tried this product a few times, I didn’t notice a visible difference in my skin’s texture or tone, and it certainly didn’t feel any more exfoliated than it does when I use a scrub or a clarifying lotion.

Would I Purchase?: No. I’ll stick to my usual pore cleansing scrubs and moisturizers to obtain a smooth, toned texture. This product just seems like a waste of money for something that can be achieved with other, less expensive products.

So 3 yes products, and 3 no products. I’d say my March 2013 BeautyArmy box was a pretty even turn-out.

And now I’ve got to finish packing.

See you all in sunny San Diego!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone- and what a weekend it’s been. In Boston, St. Paddy’s Day is pretty much a week-long affair, filled with parties, concerts, parades, and pub crawls. The past couple of years I either worked through the holiday, or was out of town- but this year I was able to celebrate accordingly- kicking off the weekend with a show from the Dropkick Murphys at TD Garden for their Irish Festival on Friday night.

When the house lights came back on and everyone was exiting the Garden for the night, I was sticky with sweat and beer, and covered in green and white confetti that had rained down on the crowd during “Shipping Up To Boston”- but I had such a good time that I didn’t even care. Between appearances from Danny O’Connor and Ken’s daughter and her step-dancing troupe, to Ken singing “Kiss Me, I’m Shitfaced” in the middle of the crowd and the band closing out the night with a pretty ferocious cover of AC/DC’s “TNT”- it was just so much fun.

Today I headed down to Dorchester Street to catch the annual South Boston Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Despite the sunshine, it was really frigid out today, which made standing for the entire two hour celebration more than a little uncomfortable, but it was still a good time. I don’t particularly know what Darth Vader, Storm Troopers,  pirates, or the Ghostbusters have to do with St. Paddy’s Day, but there never really is any rhyme or reason to these sorts of things. Besides, everyone was too much in the spirit of things (see: drunk) to really ask too many questions.

And to close this entry out before I go prepare for tonight’s episode of “The Walking Dead” and to go back to work tomorrow morning, here’s one of my favorite videos to commemorate today’s festivities:

Everyone’s Irish tonight, ladies & gentlemen! Cheers!

Baking Post: Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

Comment 1 Standard

PineappleUpsideDownCake1

For as long as I can remember, my mom always made “Pineapple Upside-Down Cake” for every holiday, family function, special occasion, etc. It was sort of like fruitcake- always just, there, on the table (except it was much, much tastier than a fruitcake)- but it’s always been a sort of tradition in her house.

I had a craving for it tonight, and decided to make one myself. The recipe is simple enough, and if you’ve got an hour or so, it’s a nice change from a standard scoop of ice cream or cookie for dessert.

YOU WILL NEED:

* Butter.

* Brown sugar.

* 1 Springform pan.

* 1 Box of yellow cake mix (the brand is entirely up to you- just make sure it’s yellow cake).

* 1 Can of sliced pineapples.

* 1 Jar of maraschino cherries.

PineappleUpsideDownCake2

OKAY, HERE’S WHAT YOU DO:

1. First, you are going to use butter to “grease” the bottom of your springform pan. Make sure it’s covered to avoid any sticking. If you’re not a fan of butter, any non-stick spray should do the trick.

2. Cover the bottom of the pan with the brown sugar. Don’t be stingy. You can use a lot and it won’t ruin the cake.

3. Place the pineapple slices on top of the brown sugar.

4. Place maraschino cherries in the center of each pineapple slice. From here, you can feel free to add more brown sugar on top of the pineapple slices and cherries.

PineappleUpsideDownCake3

PineappleUpsideDownCake4

PineappleUpsideDownCake5

5. Preheat your oven to 350°. While the oven is heating up, prepare your yellow cake mixture as instructed on the box.

6. Pour the mixed yellow cake batter on top of your brown sugar/pineapple/cherry concoction.

7. Place pan inside oven and bake for approximately 50 minutes-1 hour. Be sure to do the toothpick test every so often to make sure your cake is cooked all the way through.

8. When your cake is done baking in the oven, let it sit on a cooling rack for 10-15 minutes. *BE CAREFUL: THE BROWN SUGAR WILL BE REALLY HOT* Heed my warning- I learned that the hard way.

9.  Once cooled, flip your cake over onto a serving dish.

10. OPEN FOOD HOLE. SHOVE CAKE INSIDE.

PineappleUpsideDownCake6

PineappleUpsideDownCake7

It came out pretty good- at least good enough where I know my mom would be proud of my efforts- although I can’t say for sure that I’ll carry on her tradition of baking one for every gathering I have with family and friends.

It’d be kinda’ funny, though.

xx

Closet Crushes: Purple Argyle Tights.

Comment 1 Standard

ArgyleTights2Winter is pretty much tights & leggings season for me, and I typically stick to neutral, classic shades: black, browns, and grays. Colors that are easy to match with a variety of dresses or long sweaters, but when I saw these purple argyle tights, I just knew I had to make an exception for them.

Today was another snowy, frigid, dreary day, which had put me into a bit of a funk this morning while I was getting ready for work- and so I couldn’t think of a better time to wear them- not only to brighten my outfit, but my mood, as well. I’ve paired them with an over-sized purple sweater and my knee-high black boots in the past, but today I wore them with a slinky black dress and these cute little black ankle boots with a chunky heel that I forgot I had and found in my closet after a bit of rummaging.

Since the tights are so eye-catching, I didn’t want to overdo it by adding a lot of purple or violet tones in my makeup for the day. I used a light rose colored blush with a hint of shimmer over my base (I had a sample of DaVinci’s “Earth” from the extra February GlossyBox I received) to highlight my cheekbones, and a nude matte eye shadow (I used the lighter shade in Clinique’s “Butter Pecan” eye-shadow duo) on my eyelid and just under my brow.

From there, I applied a thin layer of a deep violet eyeliner (Clinique’s Quickliner for Eyes Intense in “Intense Plum”, which is one of my usual standby’s), and a sheer lip balm with only the slightest plum tint in it to give my lips a just a little bit of color (I used Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in “Sweet Violet“).

I think these tights are like the gateway into my trying other patterned pairs.  They’re just so much fun to wear.

GlossyBoxFebruary2013

GlossyBoxFebruary20132

GlossyBox once again surprised me this month, just as they did last month, by sending me an additional box free of charge. I’m still not exactly sure why, but no complaints here! The extra samples are perfect to travel with and to give to my friends who are curious to try new products.

This month’s theme, “International Style”, focused on Fashion Weeks around the globe, and featured products inspired by jet-setting models, designers, and fashionistas from NYC all the way to Milan. I finished trying the samples over this past weekend, and can now give a full and proper review.

What I Received:

Evologie’s Esystem Duo Pack Intensive Blemish Serum & Stay Clear Cream

LiSi Liquid Line Eyeliner in “Enchanted”

Nail Rock Nail Wraps

Bvlgari Eau Parfumée Au Thé Blanc Soap

Da Vinci Shimmer Powder in “Twilight”

Product # 1: Evologie’s Esystem Duo Pack Intensive Blemish Serum & Stay Clear Cream ($15.00)

Upon receiving this product and reading it’s description, I decided to incorporate both the cream and the serum into my daily skin care regime to see if I noticed any improvements to a couple of little blemishes that popped up in what I’ve dubbed “pre-PMS misery”. Sorry to any guys reading this, but it’s just a part of life and nature. Deal with it.

Anyway, while I noticed the serum did indeed help reduce redness and the size of said blemishes, the cream all but completely dried the rest of my face out. I applied it as directed, and almost immediately my skin felt tight and uncomfortable. I had to apply another oil-free moisturizer on top of it just so my makeup wouldn’t look flaky or patchy.

Would I Purchase?: It’s a maybe for the serum, since I feel it would come in handy for those one or two pimples that pop up (and usually at the most inconvenient of times), but absolutely not for the cream. It was way too drying for me.

Product #2: LiSi Liquid Line Eyeliner in “Enchanted” ($7.00)

I’m not a fan of liquid eyeliners at all. I’ve never found one that really works for me in terms of staying power and clean, neat, simple application. My trademark eyeliner look features a mild cat-eye, so I typically stick to gel-cream liners, since they stay in place the longest and are easier to apply and blend. I also use pencil liners, although with those, more often than not, I find I have to make sure my cat-eye doesn’t end up bleeding down to my cheek throughout the course of the day/night.

Even still, I gave “Enchanted” a try. A lovely purple color, it was a pain to apply. It just seemed I couldn’t get it off of the applicator and onto my eyelids evenly, and I had to go over it about three times total to cover areas that the first swipe of the liner missed completely because it wouldn’t spread.

LiSiEyelinerEnchanted

LiSiEyelinerEnchanted2

The picture above was taken minutes after I finished applying the liner. I wore it out for the night, and when I came home to wash my face before bed, I noticed that almost all of it had flaked off. I was left with uneven, purple, patchy sections along my lid. So disappointing!

Would I Purchase?: No. I’ll stick to my gel-cream liners. Even though the color was pretty, this eyeliner was sort of cheap. It was a pain in the ass to apply, and it didn’t even get me through the night without fading.

Product #3: Nail Rock Nail Wraps ($8.00)

I was actually really excited to try these press-on foil wraps. They come in a variety of funky color combinations and patterns. The ones I received were split, half cheetah print-half bright red, which worked out well since it was a near perfect match to my current nail polish  Not wanting to overdo it, I decided to put the pattern on only my ring fingers. As meticulous and as careful as I was applying the foils, they still crinkled up along the edges of my nails, which kind of sucked and required a lot of buffing and filing- but even that still didn’t get the foil completely smooth.

Despite that, they are pretty cool looking, and are advertised as being designed to last up to ten days. I’m on day three right now, going into day four, and even after showers, rifling through my purse, and a lot of typing, they haven’t budged. Priced at only $8, I’m impressed.

My apologies for my kind of icky cuticles in that photo. I’m in need of a manicure.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I don’t think I’d wear them on every single one of my nails, but they’d be a lot of fun to mix and match with different nail polishes, and they definitely stand out. You can’t beat the price, either, especially since they seem to have staying power (so far!)

Product #4: Bvlgari Eau Parfumée Au Thé Blanc Soap (30.00)

First, the good- this soap made my skin feel amazing. Even before I got out of the shower, I could feel a difference. My skin was soft and very, very silky, and it stayed that way long after I got out of the shower and dried off. The soap lathered up pretty well, which gave me an allover clean feeling, too- also a perk.

Now, the bad- I feel like I’m in the minority when I say this, since I’ve seen people raving about this soap in their reviews for the very reason I was put off by it- but I didn’t like the way it smelled. At all. It was just too much for me, to the point of it being kind of gross, and I ended up spritzing a little perfume on after my shower to try and cover it up.

Would I Purchase?: No. As wonderful as my skin felt, $30 is a lot of money for something that I couldn’t stand the smell of. I’d be better off putting that towards a lightly scented body lotion or body butter if I wanted the same moisturized, silky feeling, but without the overpowering aroma.

Product #5: Da Vinci Shimmer Powder in “Twilight” ($15.00)

I was a little nervous about applying this golden-toned shimmer powder to my face, worried that it would make me look too bronzed since it appeared to be on the darker side in the container, but I was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful glow and subtle shimmer it gave me after I brushed some on my cheekbones as a highlighter and on my brow bone.

The shade of this powder isn’t just limited to the “Twilight” shade, either. There’s quite a variety- from nudes, to pinks, to plums, so depending on your skin tone and personal preference, you can find a color that suits you!

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I loved the shimmer, which isn’t overpowering and actually stays in place unlike other shimmer powders and blushes I’ve tried in the past. This is a great product for cheeks and eyes, and can serve as an easy to carry substitute for eye shadow and blush, especially when you’re traveling and simply don’t have the room to carry a bunch of compacts, jars, or tubes around.

Two loved products, two not-so-loved products, and one I’m still on the fence about. I may not have been as blown away by the February GlossyBox as I was with the January one, but I had fun trying everything, and I discovered some new brands and products I’d love to experiment with more in the future.

Last night I made the trek out to Northampton to catch a set from Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls at the Pearl Street Nightclub. I don’t spend a lot of time in Western Massachusetts, so I tend to forget what a peculiar place Northampton is. It’s like it’s completely cut off from the rest of the world. I ended up parking about a half mile away from the venue, and had to walk through the downtown area to get there. On the way, I saw so many different little shops, cafés, and restaurants- and now I have the inexplicable urge to return there some afternoon in the near future and just walk around and eat, drink, be merry- and shop.

I digress. The show was fantastic. Frank never disappoints. He was so energetic, and fun, and full of that infectious positivity that just seems to radiate through his music and his personality. I’m sure I’ve said it before, I’m certain I have, but his songs are something I truly cherish. His lyrics are so inspiring. There’s no bullshit. It’s just raw and real, whether it be about the complexities of relationships or losing your way in life, to the simple things like drinking with your friends, dancing, or listening to rock n’ roll. The message is clear, though: keep your head up, be good to one another, enjoy and appreciate life as it comes at you, and roll with the punches- because everything will be just fine.

I had a brief correspondence with Frank at the beginning of last Fall after a show he’d done at The Royale in Boston. I had thanked him for a terrific performance, and for his lyrics, which meant so much to me at the time- especially after having just lost my father a couple of months before. Frank was so unbelievably kind, compassionate, and genuine with his words, telling me to stay strong and to “keep fighting”. It resonated with me, and still does to this day. He is what more musicians should aspire to be: grounded, unabashed, approachable, and of course, talented.

Last night Frank mentioned that they’d be touring the area again in the Fall. You know I’ll be there.
