I’ve been too long- I’m glad to be back.

No, I’m not dead and I haven’t been taken prisoner anywhere. Following my last entry a little over a week ago where I wrapped up the month of April, I took a few days off to focus on work, office activities, and upcoming plans for “Legally Redhead” (including a potential name and domain change- shocking, I know- but I intend to keep everyone 100% informed as things proceed forward!) I’ve also been preparing for Mother’s Day this coming Sunday and my extended weekend on the West Coast next weekend. Overall, I’ve been very busy!

I did take some time over the weekend to unwind and go out to a few different bars with friends, however- starting off at Highball Lounge (where I had the most incredible apple brandy beverage imaginable- called “Apple Bottom Jeans”) before working our way over to Silvertone. We didn’t stay long- since Boston bars can get a little rowdy on the weekends- so we closed out the night in much quieter Cambridge. First, at State Park and then at Lord Hobo– which is where that dimly-lit selfie of me was taken after last call had come and gone.

I woke up the next morning feeling surprisingly pretty good (helped in part by a carb-heavy breakfast in Melrose with my much more hungover friends)– but it got me thinking- I should put together an updated version of “My Guide to Boston” from 2015. A lot has changed since then, after all! There’s definitely a lot of newer places I’ve grown fond of and a ton of updated things to do around this lovely little city I call home.

I also intend to start compiling “Top 10” lists as a helpful guide to those visiting not just Boston, but Massachusetts and New England in general- too. I know a lot of really great restaurants, bars, unusual shops, etc. etc. throughout Western Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and so on- and my blog seems like the perfect outlet to share them.

But I digress! This was just a quick update to say that I haven’t vanished entirely- I’m just working on multiple things at once! I have a recipe post planned for later on this week (courtesy of my mom- so you know it’s going to be good!) and I’m excited to share the blog news once all of my plans are finalized and confirmed. Big and long overdue changes are coming!

Once in a while it does the brain (and my knuckles since I type so much!) a little bit of good to take a break- but I think I’m finally caught up on everything that was pressing and in need of my undivided attention- and I’m ready to get back to work here at Legally Redhead!

Stay tuned for some good eats in a couple of days, and a peek inside an upcoming clothing/makeup haul pre-vacation!

Treat yourself: 2017!

superbowlsunday2017

The city of Boston has essentially been in non-stop party mode since Sunday night’s Super Bowl- and I’m still in a state of bewildered bliss, myself. I cannot BELIEVE that comeback. I mean- did that really happen or was I dreaming? Am I still dreaming? Prior to Lady Gaga’s amazing performance at halftime (side note: someone please point me in the direction to where I can buy one of those glittery/studded leotard things she was wearing. I want one for myself!)– the game was just downright painful to watch as the Falcons were mercilessly pummeling the Pats. I didn’t think there was any way to come back from that beat-down…

… But I guess miracles really do happen and it’s never truly over until it’s over. I went from borderline heartbroken to nail-biting levels of nervous, to a stunned/ecstatic mix of emotions and then straight into frenzied celebration mode in a matter of minutes during overtime on Sunday night and let me tell you- it was EXHAUSTING– in a good way, of course!

Today was the Patriots’ homecoming party in the form of my city’s favorite victory tradition: the Duck Boat Parade. Work and rough weather conditions prevented me from going, but some of my friends mustered up the courage to call out sick and bundle up to brave the sleet and ice to find a spot along the parade route early this morning- and their photos/videos were giving me life in my office all day. I couldn’t stop smiling.

The celebration will continue well into this weekend for many, I’m sure- and I’m already eyeing some commemorative gear to  splurge on as a memento for what is hands-down my most favorite Super Bowl I’ve ever watched (so far, anyway!)

chachachas01

chachachas02

Prior to Sunday’s big game, I did some pre-gaming of my own with friends at a couple of new spots in Everett and Melrose. On Saturday, I finally got around to checking out the Cha Cha Cha Taqueria in Everett- a hole in the wall/blink and you’ll miss it Mexican food spot I passed by chance a few weeks ago while on my way home and had made a mental note to check it out ever since. Although the place is pretty small on the inside- it’s some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever had. I ordered a chicken quesadilla, which came rolled in a seasoned corn tortilla instead of pressed flat in a flour one- and what a difference it made!

I ended up eating the entire thing (and also- yay for street tacos!) with chips and homemade guacamole. Completely gluttonous and worth it. I’ll definitely be going back.

damicisbakery01

Later on that night, when I was back in Melrose and needed to walk off my gigantic quesadilla (and get a coffee to keep myself out of a food coma)– my BFF Sean and I took a brisk walk over to Main Street and, specifically- D’Amici’s Bakery. I’d only ever been in there once before for a quick cappuccino last Fall and didn’t take the time to sit down and really savor the place, so it was nice to do it this time. Their coffee/tea/hot chocolate selections are fantastic- and their baked goods are delicious. I ended up getting a chocolate cannoli to eat while I was there, but I also picked up a few of the above-pictured Patriots cupcakes to bring to my Super Bowl party the following night and they ended up being a big hit.

I think I know where I’ll be going the next time I need to pick up sweets for any functions/parties!

Overall, it’s been a very exciting weekend and week so far- and I’m very much looking forward to a day or two of downtime after a couple of big meetings I have lined up at work within the next few days so that I can pause and catch my breath for a moment- and also finish some much-needed renovations here on the blog without distraction. I’m excited to reveal the changes once they’re done.

We’re almost to the weekend everyone. Hang in there!

Surprise Party Birthday Cake. Hay baaaaes!

When it comes to making plans, I’ve never really been one to painstakingly organize every single detail down to a T. Sure, my work schedule, my fitness regimen, my travel arrangements- all are carefully coordinated and carried out because I do need SOME structure and control in my routine- but hanging out with friends? Going for a mini road trip? Grabbing dinner? Seeing a movie or just walking around town? I like to keep those ends loose and the planning as lax as possible because I’ve come to find that by not micro-managing my free time down to the last second has left room for the unexpected and the exciting to happen.

I’ve had so many adventures by simply taking a different corner while out for a walk or visiting an attraction/restaurant/neighborhood I’ve passed by or through a hundred times but never actually stopped to take a really good look before.

Such was the case with this past weekend- which was also my birthday weekend and one I extended into Monday with a planned day off from work. While there was an outline of potential plans- dinner with friends, time with my family, and a day trip to NYC- nothing was set in stone because I didn’t want to stress about anything and risk dampening my celebratory mood and I certainly didn’t want the people in my life stressing about making my days enjoyable, either.

But they went above and beyond, anyway!

Saturday night, after treating myself during the day to some hair color refreshment with my stylist and a jaunt to downtown Boston to show my support for the Women’s March (and by now I’m sure most of you saw how HUGE that crowd was! Whoa!) I met up with my friends in Melrose for a lovely evening stroll downtown and a pre-birthday meal at Giacomo’s. It was my first time there but certainly won’t be my last. I love a good plate of Italian food- and not only did I practically lick my plate clean- but I picked at my friends’ plates, too. So, so delicious.

birthdaydinner2017

After dinner, I thought we’d order dessert and be on our way- but my friends split the check among themselves and were quick to usher me back to their apartment around the corner- where they had the above-pictured red velvet cake waiting for me. I won’t say what I wished for when I blew out the candles- but I have a pretty good feeling it’s coming true. I was so touched and had such a lovely night. It didn’t hurt that the weather was gorgeous, too! I was outside with just a sweater and was perfectly cozy!

Sunday, my actual birthday- was spent getting plenty of birthday calls, texts and social media alerts while kicking back throughout the afternoon and evening with my family where we had a home cooked meal courtesy of my mother (lobster and scallops- which is our special occasion food!) and watching The Patriots beat the Steelers to become the AFC Champions and head to the Super Bowl in a couple of weeks. It was such a relaxing and laid-back day and was just what I needed to get me amped up for my post-birthday visit to NYC this past Monday!

Bright eyed (after some much needed coffee)– Sean and I headed out Monday morning to catch a train into Grand Central. We got into the city early in the afternoon where it was rainy/sleeting and a bit colder than we would have liked. We didn’t waste any time ducking into a couple of shops to look around and grabbed a quick lunch at Eat Here Now– a hole in the wall brunch/lunch spot in the Upper East Side that made just about everything you could ever want to order. I grabbed a tuna melt to warm my bones and it didn’t leave me disappointed.

nycbirthdaytrip20171

nycbirthdaytrip20172

Not far from our lunch spot was Sprinkles Cupcakes, where I insisted Sean try out their cupcake ATM since he had never seen it before. We picked out a German Chocolate Cupcake (with whipped vanilla and pecan frosting) to share with the coffee we planned to have later on that afternoon before we headed back towards our train.

With the winds picking up and the rain coming down a little harder- Sean and I found ourselves at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I’d never been, and always wanted to go- but there was one problem- we got there an hour before the place closed. Now, an hour is not nearly enough time to see everything this museum has to offer- and it’s certainly not worth the full $25 admission price to see one wing before having to leave- but here’s a fun surprise: if you show up to the museum before they close- you can name your own price of admission. I’m serious. Sean and I got to explore the Egyptian and Contemporary wings for $5.

nycbirthdaytrip20173

I’m already planning a trip back to NYC in the coming weeks specifically to go to The MET just so I can see the rest of the museum. The place is gigantic and quite beautiful- and I know there’s a lot I missed out on during my quick walk-through!

Before racing back to Grand Central to beat an impending ice storm that was set to hit Massachusetts on Monday night, Sean and I stopped at Joe’s Coffee to grab a couple of cappuccinos and enjoy our cupcake while we charged our phones and dried our coats as best as we could. The place was small, warm, smelled like freshly ground coffee beans and was playing some drum-heavy music (which was a nice change of pace from the usual smooth jazz I hear in most coffee shops) so I enjoyed our brief stay immensely- and the caffeine gave me just enough of a kick to not only RUN to the subway back to the station- but practically hurdle myself onto our train just as it was pulling away from the platform.

nycbirthdaytrip201712

Overall, my birthday weekend was pretty great. It was spent with people near and dear to me and was about as spontaneous and roll-with-the-punches as you can imagine. I had an incredible time and I’m looking forward to getting back out on the town this coming Saturday and Sunday.

And thank you again to everyone who reached out to me to send birthday wishes and good vibes. It meant the world to me and I truly and honestly appreciate it so much! You all helped make my special day even better!

Bundling Up and Burgers…

jamaicapond20171

Jamaica Pond, 1/8/17

When you live in New England, making concrete plans between the months of late November through mid-March can be a tricky thing. Our weather is unpredictable, to put it mildly- and snowstorms/blizzards can delay even the most local of get-togethers. If walking along Boston sidewalks is stressful enough- then NOBODY wants to brave driving or public transport to get where they’re going. Nobody.

Such was the case this past Saturday, when Winter Storm Helena rolled through the Northeast and left highway pileups, plow/sanding delays, and dangerously cold temperatures in her wake. The storm seemed to be a surprise birthday present for my best friend Sean- who had made dinner and drinks plans with a large group of us to commemorate his special day well before anyone even knew the storm was coming.

Sadly, Helena hit earlier in the day than expected- leaving me trapped in Central Massachusetts where I had been running some errands until early Sunday morning when the roads were finally clear. I had attempted to get back into Boston in time for Sean’s party- but after the third or fourth time my poor Elantra began fishtailing on the ice was when I eventually gave up and turned back.

That doesn’t mean we didn’t celebrate in our own way, however. Once I was back in the city on Sunday- Sean and I (as well as our friend Stephen) made dinner arrangements at Grass Fed JP, an all-natural burger joint on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain that cooks up some of the best burgers (and truffle fries!) I’ve ever tasted. I went for The Cali Burger and have no regrets. It was delicious.

They also offer up some tasty sounding alcohol-infused milkshakes, but since I was driving- I opted to save trying those for another time (and also it was way too cold out for milkshakes!)

grassfedjpjanuary2017

I’m actually tempted to try my hand and making my own truffle fries this coming weekend- so be on the lookout for a recipe post at some point next week! I doubt they’ll be as awesome as Grass Fed’s, but it’s worth a shot.

After dinner- Sean, Stephen and I popped around the corner to grab our caffeine fix (although I stuck with hot chocolate since I was still running on a jet fuel level espresso I had earlier that afternoon) at 7 Pond Coffee Bar. It’s a cute, quaint, and tiny hole in the wall that you may miss if you blink as you pass it- but if you’re ever in the area- you have to drop in. Their cocoa is some of the best around- and Sean couldn’t get enough of his cappuccino, either!

With hot drinks in hand and Stephen heading off to meet up with his family- Sean and I braved the arctic tundra temperatures to take a quick stroll by Jamaica Pond before eventually retreating to the warmth of my car and then the apartment after we returned to Melrose for some much needed video games and binge-watching on Netflix.

My birthday- the next in line- is a couple of weeks away, and I’m just now picking a place for my friends and I to gather for some food and a couple of cocktails. I have a few ideas in mind- but here’s hoping Mother Nature doesn’t intervene and disrupt everything again!

As part of my “blog more/create more content” pledge for 2017- I’m going to start highlighting more of my favorite local eateries, too. Whether they’re old favorites or new finds- I’m always looking for recommendations for good food and enjoy sharing them with others, too. Grass Fed JP & 7 Pond Coffee Bar are just the tip of the iceberg of excellent places to check out in the Boston area!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

BrattleboroMay20161

It’s funny how plans can change in a matter of minutes, or in my case- a matter of hours when driving in a completely different direction.

This past Tuesday, I had every intention of heading to NYC for the afternoon to check out an exhibit and grab an early dinner at one of the many restaurants I’ve bookmarked in recent weeks specifically for my next day trip to the area. I had gotten up early in the morning, showered, packed up my camera, and ate a decent breakfast before hopping in my car and hitting the road-

– where I ended up in Brattleboro, Vermont- instead.

I’m not exactly sure what happened. As I started to drive, winding around the back roads to avoid traffic while en route to my local Starbucks to grab a latte- I started thinking: about work, my plans for the coming days/weeks/months, my friends and family, my finances, the guy I’ve been seeing- pretty much everything- and it got LOUD inside my head while I was thinking.

I mean really loud- like I couldn’t even focus on singing along to the music I was thumping through my car speakers.

I realized that maybe NYC- one of the loudest places ever- may not have been a good option for me and I decided to head to quieter territory up North, instead- continuing driving on the back roads all the way up to Vermont- passing plenty of forests, farms, fields and roadside fruit stands on my way.

I eventually stopped in Brattleboro to stretch my legs, stroll the Main Street area where I perused a few shops and grabbed lunch at BrattleBurger– where I think I may have had one of the best bacon cheeseburgers in my life.

BrattleboroMay20162

It was so good (and so was the strawberry lemonade!) that I’m debating putting together a list of my top ten favorite New England burger joints in the next few weeks just to celebrate the place and some of the other spots around the area where I go when I’m craving medium-cooked deliciousness on a bun.

By the time I was ready to head out of town and back towards home, it had started lightly raining in Brattleboro- and the storm followed me all the way to the state lines. Thankfully, I felt rested and rejuvenated by the time I got back to my place. My thoughts didn’t seem or sound so loud anymore- and I think taking such a nice, long drive and spending some time in a quiet, serene area was just what I needed.

Next week, though- I’m hoping to finally get to NYC! Loud or not!

Blizzard Brunch! 2/15/15

Blizzard Brunch! 2/15/15

Good afternoon and Happy (belated) Valentine’s Day (and belated Galentine’s Day to all my fellow fabulous females out there!) It should come no surprise at this point, but yesterday saw another snowstorm hit New England. As a result, today is seeing another city-wide shut-down in effect while emergency crews attempt to clear roadways and side streets for what feels like the hundredth time in the past few weeks. The silver lining in the aftermath of this most recent storm- the sun is out right now!- is unfortunately overshadowed by the fact that there are 45 MPH winds whipping violently outside, causing the (current) “Feels Like” temperature to be a staggering -17°F.

Maybe it’s just because I’m finally starting to crack under longstanding cabin fever (I’ve been mostly confined to only two locations- my home and my office- within the past week,) but the non-stop snow, the frigid temperatures- the undeniable inconvenience these storms have caused so many- is starting to become less depressing and more comical, really. If anything, the resulting memes and funny photos I’ve been seeing posted and shared on social media in recent days have helped keep my spirits up. You can say a lot about New Englanders (and specifically, Bostonians-) we’re not the most levelheaded and cautious of drivers, for example- or our sports teams take priority over nearly everything else going on in the world, and our accents are cause for numerous parodies- but at least we have good senses of humor about things.

BeatHotelFeb2015

Beat Hotel. Om nom nom. 2/13/15

Prior to the storm, I did manage to venture out on Friday night to slip and slide on the iced over sidewalks and have dinner and a couple of drinks with my dear friend Evan at Beat Hotel in Harvard Square. Nothing warms me up more than live jazz bands and amazing food (I highly recommend the Mahi Mahi fish tacos!) so it was a nice way to break up the routine I’ve fallen into as of late. If you’re ever in Cambridge and looking for a great meal in a lovely setting with phenomenal live music- the Beat Hotel is your place.

The only regrettable part to last night’s storm- for me, anyway- is that it caused me to miss the evening’s events at StyleWeek Northeast due to unsafe driving conditions. I had been looking forward to seeing the latest designs from Angelica Timas and Shalyn Webber, among others- but I’m hoping I’ll be able to catch another event soon once Mother Nature decides to show us a little bit of mercy.

In somewhat fashion related, but mostly blog-centric news- at the end of January I had mentioned in my “In a Nutshell” post that I had hoped to start sharing some of my favorite pieces and ensembles again beginning this month (it’s been forever and a day since I’ve made a “Closet Crushes” post!) and I still have every intention of doing it- but the very idea of standing outdoors and attempting to pose with the wind howling outside the way it is right now is enough to make me shiver where I sit and pull my blankets around me a little tighter. I’m really going to try to pull a couple of posts off within the next week or so!

Until then, I’ll be having another long, hot soak in the tub this evening in preparation for tonight’s “The Walking Dinner,” where I prepare a meal to munch on while the new episode of “The Walking Dead” airs. Here’s hoping the power doesn’t go out!

Stay warm out there, everyone!

BostonMarathonMemorial1

BostonMarathonMemorial2

This past weekend, I made it a point to spend some time around the city. It was a little chilly out, but a couple of friends and I headed down to Beacon Hill, then the Common, and finally, Boylston Street- the site of the Boston Marathon bombings and the above-pictured makeshift memorial. A section of the street, stretching down to Copley Square, was still closed off to the public while officials and authorities finish cleaning up the scene.

It was my first time back to the area since before the attack, and it was so strange to see a street that is usually bustling with people on a Saturday night so empty and quiet. The mood was a somber one, despite the relief and elation the night before after Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had been taken into custody. It’s still hard to believe that this happened. It’s still very surreal.

Not wanting to end the night on a depressing note, we headed to Tangierino & Koullshi in Charlestown for a late night snack and some apple flavored hookah.  We’d passed by the place while taking a stroll earlier this winter, and quickly added it to our list of things to do and places to check out. It’s a little on the pricier side, but definitely worth a night of splurging if you and your friends want to treat yourselves to an exotic atmosphere, some good food (if you’re just looking for something to pick at, I highly reccomend the Moroccan-Sicilian Eggplant Tagine), a decent martini, and beautiful belly-dancers (yes, the place has belly dancers and they’re INCREDIBLE.)

We rented out a secluded corner of the lounge for a couple of hours called “The Bedouin Cave”, which was sort of like a remodeled brick dome/tent area with plush carpeting, fancy pillows, and dim lighting that made for a really relaxing couple of hours. Apparently there are sometimes tarot card readings that take place in there, too, which I’ll have to remember for the next time.

Sunday was, thankfully, another day without errands to run. After a morning of video games, Sean and I eventually made it down to the South End for a late brunch at South End Buttery where I ate what I can only describe as the best omelette I’ve ever tasted in my life. No exaggeration. It was the most delicious thing. Completely worth the hour and a half wait time for a table (we split an equally delicious cranberry-walnut muffin to hold us over ’til we were seated.) If you have time for a proper breakfast in the morning, that’s the place to go.

After leaving brunch, I managed to snap a couple of photos of the trees blossoming (finally!) around the city before I had to start preparing for the work week. So much pink and soft white and the occasional yellow- colors I missed seeing growing out of the ground and on the treetops over the winter.

Sick Day.

Without fail, nearly every year around this time (and typically during “January Thaw”), I tend to get a nasty 24-48 hour cold that renders me completely useless to the outside world and causes me to retreat to to the depths of my bedroom- armed with tissue boxes, a gallon of Simply Orange orange juice (with extra pulp!), a bottle of Ibuprofen, and my Netflix subscription to ride it out until the worst is over and I feel well enough to return to work . Last night on my way home from a day trip to check out an urban exploration location in Western Massachusetts, I started showing the telltale signs of an impending illness- my throat started hurting and I had a dull headache that grew increasingly stronger as the hours wore on.

I typically wouldn’t be concerned, but there is also a bad flu epidemic that has swept most of Massachusetts (and judging from last night’s Golden Globe Awards, nearly everyone in Hollywood has it, too), so when my symptoms hadn’t improved much by this morning, I opted to take the day off from work as a precaution to rest, relax, get plenty of fluids in me, and nip it in the bud before it got worse without risking potentially spreading it to any of my co-workers.

I feel a lot better now than I did this morning, so here’s hoping it was just a fluke.

At least I had a good weekend.

Saturday night I took Sean out for a belated birthday dinner (his birthday was last Monday, but our work schedules delayed the celebration by a few days). At his recommendation and request, we went to Dali in Somerville. I’d never been before, but Sean seemed confident that I’d enjoy it, and he was right.

The food itself was really good, but I was so enamored with the decor of the place that I kept getting distracted from our fried milk and flan. Admittedly, it doesn’t look like much from the outside, but inside is really, really cool. Definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of Spanish food.

WesternMassSnowfall

Back roads in Western Mass.

I said it earlier in this entry, but yesterday I headed out to the mythical land known as Western Massachusetts, specifically the town of Greenfield, to take a few photos of the Candlelight Motor Inn. I was hoping it would be in a more tranquil part of town, but a McDonalds has been built directly next door (they actually share a parking lot), so trying to get into the zone while people were ordering Big Mags and Happy Meals twenty-five feet behind me was a little difficult.

I can’t find much history on the place, like when it was constructed or when it was closed down (all I could pull up was a 2012 obituary of a woman who used to work in the housekeeping department), but the buildings are in rough shape. Add in the elements of snow/ice potentially weakening the roof and floorboards, and I chose to take exterior shots instead of risking my safety to try and get a couple of interior ones.

Here were some of my favorites from the bunch:

There was a pool area I had wanted to check out, but I was losing light quicker than anticipated, so I’m thinking I may have to make a trip back- more than likely in the Spring or the Summer when it should be less slippery and therefore less hazardous to walk around.

I did see a couple of other interesting locations on the way I’m thinking I may check out this coming weekend if I have the time and if I’m feeling well enough.

Speaking off, it’s time for me to drink some hot tea, take a shot of NyQuil, and get ready to turn in for the night.
