This past weekend was cloudy and rainy- the perfect weather for long drives with no real destination in mind. On Saturday, I ventured out on the back roads to Western Massachusetts. After taking a wrong turn, I ended up at the Winsor Dam. I’d never been before, and climbed out of my car to stretch my legs, take a stroll, and check things out. The view was breathtaking, and that’s putting it mildly. I was awestruck. At one point, as if on cue, the sun broke through the clouds, giving me an opportunity to snap some of the above photos.

The others were taken at Quabbin Park Cemetery down the street later on that afternoon. It was such an unusual mix of very old headstones (1800s,) some so faded you couldn’t read a word on them, to not-so-old ones with fresh flowers resting beside them. I was the only one in the cemetery for quite a while, which made it rather nice and peaceful.

On Sunday, I once again found myself heading back to Western Massachusetts, this time to visit a friend for the afternoon. On the way, I stopped at a house resting quietly on a busy main street in West Brookfield that caught my attention almost immediately. Looking long abandoned and in need of more than a little TLC, I think it’s safe to say it’s my dream house. It’s so, so beautiful, a fixer-upper for sure, but beautiful.

I stood out in the rain, happily taking photos of the faded stained glass and the curtains that were still visible in the top windows. I’m in love. The only thing I kept thinking, apart how dreamy it would be to live in it, was how great it would probably be as a bed & breakfast or something.

A girl can dream.

Horrors of Netflix: “Dead End”

Leave a comment Standard

DeadEndMoviePosterI haven’t done a movie review in a while, mostly because the majority of movies I’ve seen in recent months have fallen under the action and/or comedy category, and critiquing horror films is really more of my forte. Thankfully, with Halloween approaching, there is no shortage of scary movies to be found, be they in theaters or on television. My favorite collection, however, lies in the seedy underworld that is the Netflix queue. You see, Netflix, while having a brilliant selection of movies and compelling TV series available for viewing- is also a treasure trove for some of the worst, the cheapest, the absolute most unwatchable movies and shows in the history of film and television. This rings especially true in the horror movie category.

I love cheesy horror movies almost as much, if not more, than I love genuinely well-made horror movies or cult classics. I like watching the particular bad ones with a group of friends, which almost always turns the screening into something right out of “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” with all of us laughing at and/or adding commentary during the movie.

That being said, I decided to get into the Halloween spirit this month by selecting some of these unquestionably bad horror movies on my Netflix queue, suffering through them, and reviewing them for your (and my) pleasure. I’m calling this series of posts “Horrors of Netflix,” and first up on the list is 2003’s “Dead End.”

I’ve seen “Dead End” before. More than once, actually. The first time was with friends, back when Blockbuster Video was still an active thing and not a relic from the past that people can look at in museums these days to learn about ancient civilizations, We had been looking for a horror movie to pass a lazy Saturday night and the cover to “Dead End” caught our attention.

The second time I watched this movie was days after the first time, when I wanted to confirm that it really was as bad as I’d originally thought and that I hadn’t hallucinated it’s terribleness or anything.

Needless to say, when it popped up on Netflix, I was pretty excited to get the opportunity to watch it in all it’s awful glory one more time to kick things off for this series of reviews.

Please be warned, this review will contain spoilers. If you DO NOT want to know how this movie ends, do not click the link below.

GLOSSYBOX: September 2013 Review.

GlossyBoxSeptember20132

September’s Glossybox, packed with essentials for the Fall season, had the delightful distinction from other beauty boxes by featuring five full-sized products, putting it’s value at over $100. Not bad, considering the subscription service costs only $21 a month. Of course, I wanted to try everything I received before I reached a final verdict- but that alone already had me impressed.

What I Received:

NIOXIN Diamax Hair Treatment

BCBG Max Azria Bon Genre Eau de Parfum Spray

Emite Makeup Eyelash Curler

Oceane Makeup Remover Pen

Be A Bombshell Eyeliner Pen in “Onyx”

GlossyBoxSeptember20133

Product # 1: NIOXIN Diamax Hair Treatment ($50)

With my hair being as course and as curly as it is- thickness has, thankfully, never been an issue or a concern for me. Even still, I was curious about this serum I’ve heard and read so many good reviews for, and massaged it generously from my scalp to my ends after a shower to see whether or not I’d notice any immediate results. As my hair dried, I saw some frizz and fly-aways near my hairline, and applied a light curl cream to keep everything in place before finishing my makeup and heading out to start my day.

By afternoon, my hair looked and felt fuller and more volumized- more so than usual. I wasn’t the only one who noticed, either. My co-worker remarked that my hair had more body to it- and that was only after one use! Like most treatments, you have to use it continuously for maximum results.

GlossyBoxSeptember20134

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I’m already very, very pleased with the results I’ve seen from this product with only a couple of uses so far, and I have a feeling that after a few weeks, my hair and I will be even more satisfied. This serum may not be ideal for just styling your hair, but it doesn’t seem to lose it’s thickening and conditioning power even when mixed with a light cream or mousse, so you don’t have to compromise volumizing results for being frizz-free.

Product # 2: BCBG Max Azria Bon Genre Eau de Parfum Spray ($75)

Out of the five products I received in September’s Glossybox, I was most excited for this BCBG perfume spray that came in a travel-sized tube that is ideal to put in my purse. This particular fragrance, a heavier (but still pretty!) mix of florals, vanilla, and sandalwood, is perfect for the Autumn and Winter months. It lasts all day without fading, so a couple of spritzes on your wrists/pulse points and you’re good from morning ’til night.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This fragrance is so intoxicating, and, dare I say it, sexy. I would absolutely add another bottle of this to my collection of perfumes.

GlossyBoxSeptember20135

Product # 3: Emite Makeup Eyelash Curler ($30.50)

I’ve only ever used an eyelash curler a handful of times in my life, and each time, I never noticed any dramatic results- at least nothing that a decent mascara couldn’t do for me without putting a contraption dangerously close to my eyeball. I tried this curler, which was well-made and came with replacement pads, a few times, but the results were still lackluster.

Would I Purchase?: No. I don’t think eyelash curlers are for me, period. I’ll probably end up gifting this to someone since it’s a good quality, and they might see better, more noticeable results than I did.

Product # 4: Oceane Makeup Remover Pen ($5.30)

When applying eyeliner, I have a tendency to screw it up. One eye comes out lined thicker than the other, I miss a spot, my cat-eye smudges with the wrong flick of my wrist, etc. and I’m left frantically looking for a cotton swap to try and fix it before it dries and I have to take it off and start over completely. This small, purse-appropriate-sized pen is a Godsend. With soft, replaceable tips, this product applies a small amount of makeup remover to the affected area without leaving the skin feeling greasy or making eye or lip makeup look runny.

This morning, as usual, I smudged a bit of my eyeliner, and quickly reached for this pen to see if it worked as well as the packaging suggested. Sure enough, my small error was gone in seconds and I was able to easily fix my eye makeup with less hassle than usual. Consider me sold.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is one of those products that should always be in your purse. It’s small, lightweight, reasonably priced, and ever so convenient for fixing little makeup mistakes or for touch-ups if anything falls out of place in the course of the day.

GlossyBoxSeptember20136

Product # 5: Be A Bombshell Eyeliner Pen in “Onyx” ($14)

The aforementioned botched eye liner I was using (and needed to fix) happened to be this fine, felt-tip, and fast-drying liquid-esque liner from Be A Bombshell, which looked and felt like I was lining my eyes with a Sharpie marker. The liner didn’t exactly apply smoothly for me. I had to go back and go over a couple of areas that looked patchy more than once before my eyes looked even, and although it’s highly pigmented and supposedly waterproof, I noticed that it smudged a LOT throughout the day. By the time I left work, I had a bad case of unintentional raccoon eyes.

Would I Purchase?: No. I feel like I say it every time I venture outside of my eyeliner comfort zone- but I’ll stick with my gel liners. This particular brand, although an interesting concept, just wasn’t for me. Not only that, but my concern would be how long it would last- considering it does not need to be sharpened or twisted up, and markers can sometimes dry out rather quickly.

GlossyBoxSeptember20137

Two products I didn’t like out of five full-sized products? That’s fine! The value of the three products I really enjoyed more than made up for my disappointment with the eyelash curler and eyeliner.  September’s Glossybox was a pleasant surprise. Major kudos.

Hostel in Ocean Beach, San Diego.

Hostel in Ocean Beach, San Diego.

Although I’m still mildly jet-lagged, it was nice to get up this morning and get back to work. A body at rest will stay at rest, and as relaxing as my mini-vacation was, I don’t like staying “at rest” for too long. I go stir crazy. I rather enjoy being productive and getting things done. That sense of productivity and accomplishment seemed to be a reoccurring theme over the course of September. I went into overdrive at the firm, more so than usual- up until the mere hours before I caught my flight out West last week to make sure my workload was either finished, up-to-date, and/or organized. This wasn’t only for my boss and co-worker’s benefit for while I was away- but for myself, as well, for when I got back. It was a rather rewarding feeling when I got into the office today and knew exactly what needed to be done and exactly where everything needed to go. It freed up what I call “clutter time,” which is just minutes or hours wasted on trying to locate things or figure out what needs to get done and when and created more free time for me to focus on other things, instead.

I had mentioned in a recent post while I was in California that October is shaping up to be a very fun, and very busy month. Halloween, which I think may be my favorite holiday, ever- brings a lot of fun events with it. Scary movies, costume parties, cheesy/scary attractions (haunted hay rides, anyone?) horror-themed conventions, the return of “The Walking Dead,” and so much more. I think I’ve been in the Halloween spirit since around April, so needless to say, I’m excited. I have a few themed posts in mind to celebrate, and my camera ready to capture everything.

And I can’t wait to share my costume with everyone.

Ah, yes, the dreaded “last day of vacation” has finally arrived. As much as I would love to stay in San Diego forever, I’m due to fly back to the East Coast early tomorrow morning (arriving just in time to catch the series finale of “Breaking Bad!”)

My last day of vacation usually involves packing, double checking that I packed everything about four to several more times, catching up on my (sigh) e-mails so I’m prepared when I get home and get back to business, double-checking that I packed everything another five times, and shopping. My mom, God bless her, loves souvenirs, so I always have to make a point to bring her back something cheesy to appease her, and even though I bring more than enough clothes and outfits for any and every occasion that should arise (you never know when you’ll need a cocktail dress… or a ball gown) while away from home, I always end up picking up a few more things that catch my eye.

Today, while stretching my legs, I stopped by a little store downtown to take a quick peek at a dress displayed in the front window that I had liked the pattern of. Instead, I ended up leaving with a bunch of fun-printed scarves and a crop-top I couldn’t resist buying:

Yesterday, I spent a good chunk of the day catching some sun and salty ocean air down at the pier at Ocean Beach (O.B.) which is one of my favorite spots in San Diego. The overall environment and the people that frequent there, at least every time I’ve visited, are very laid back surfer, skater, and hippie types. When I wasn’t down at the water, I was walking along the main strip of surf-shops, bars, and food shacks, admiring the spray-painted murals and street art on display on the sides of most of the buildings. The entire look of the beach is like something out of late 60s/early 70s, with more modern cars and clothing, of course. I’m so smitten with the place.

CaliFallGetaway18

I met up with my longtime San Diegon friend, Duncan, at O.B., where we had a really nice little picnic by ocean before heading back to his beautiful apartment in Hillcrest. I met his three-legged cat (who is ADORABLE) and Duncan surprised me with an absolutely gorgeous Michael Kors watch. I’m still a little stunned by it. Every time I go to look at the time, I can’t help but smile.

CaliFallGetaway19

CaliFallGetaway20

The night concluded with a visit to a rooftop bar, where I had the most breathtaking view of the city as the sun was setting, followed by some New York style pizza- which is really the only way to end a perfect day.

And now, as the sun begins to set here again (sadly, I have no pizza this time,) I’m preparing to bid farewell to SoCal, and to what was an entirely and thoroughly enjoyable weekend. It was so, so nice to see some familiar faces- and meet some new ones, over the past few days, and while there were a couple of people I sadly did not get the chance to visit due to distance or time constraints- there’s always next time.

It seems that the only thing left to do before I go is stuff my face with one last heaping amount of In-N-Out Burger. I’m craving animal fries like you wouldn’t believe right now.

See you all back on the East Coast!

Hello from beautiful San Diego, California!

This little four day getaway (I arrived Wednesday) was sort of a spur of the moment decision on my part. October looks as though it’s going to be a month full of fun events- with my time split between being at home in Massachusetts and in NYC- and November and December, as is the workplace tradition- will be very, very busy as the firm wraps up cases for the end of the year and prepares for 2014. It’s a little wild to think about- that in just a few months we’ll be heading into an entirely new year.

But I digress, since talking about time going by so quickly can be awfully depressing. Seeing an opportunity to get away, if only for a few days, before I am indubitably swamped, I flew out to Southern California to do, well, nothing. This is the first time in a long time where I’ve traveled somewhere, not to see any specific sights or participate in any specific activity under any specific schedule, but to just sort of come and go as I please- eat and drink where I want, sleep as late as I’d like (although I was up and moving at 7 A.M. Pacific Standard Time yesterday and this morning, so I guess some things never change, even on vacation,) and roll with the punches as they came at me- and it’s been phenomenal, and also very, very relaxing. I’ve discovered a ton of new places in the area to add to the list of places I already frequent and enjoy.

I’ve already explained my love for San Diego, and my long-term goal to eventually make the permanent move here, so there’s no need to bore anyone reading this with the details of my love affair yet again. This place is the best- and that’s really all that needs to be said.

While Wednesday was pretty quiet, low-key, and uneventful (after a pretty long and horrific flight, the only thing I really wanted to do was grab some food and take a nap in my hotel room,) yesterday was filled with a lot of exercise and exploring. I spent the majority of the morning and afternoon in Balboa Park, stopping by the San Diego Museum of Man (an absolutely massive and gorgeous building I’ve always admired from afar whenever I’m here,) to see an exhibit of Medieval torture devices- because why not? I only got a little queasy just once while reading the description of how one of the devices was used (spoiler alert: it was a device designed specifically for women,) but overall, it was morbidly fascinating. Definitely worth checking out if you’ve got the stomach for it.

CaliFallGetaway6

CaliFallGetaway7

As it turns out, my timing for this trip turned out to be perfect, especially last night when I stopped by The Griffin to grab a drink and catch a show put together by SoundDiego that featured Neighbors to the North (awesome,) the first live performance from Saint Diego (my new favorite band,) and my old pals, The Nervous Wreckords. Now, my love for the city of San Diego itself and it’s beautiful weather and lovely scenery is only surpassed by my love for the people I know here. I’ve known Brian, the frontman, since my teens- and Daniel, the keyboardist, for a while now, and I hadn’t had the pleasure of spending time with either one of them in about two years. The show was fantastic, but getting to see them and catch up afterwards was truly the highlight of my night (apart from Saint Diego covering CCR’s “Bad Moon Rising,” of course. That was the coolest thing ever.)

And major kudos to the friendly new faces I met last night who talked Boston sports with me (without ripping on my accent too much) and directed me to different things to check out in the city, either during this trip or the next time I’m in town. Those guys, and gals, made an already wonderful evening even better with their hospitality.

With only a couple of days left on the West Coast, I’m looking forward to visiting a few more friends and hitting the beach. It’s still early-ish here, however- and I think I hear breakfast calling my name.

xx

My Autumn Essentials.

Leave a comment Standard

AutumnEssentials2013Banner

So far, at the beginning of every season this year, I’ve compiled a small list of some of the things I adore that get me through the cold (or hot,) temperatures and changing scenery. Autumn is no exception. I’ve already gushed, at length, about my love for all things Fall, but here’s a few specific odds and ends that make it even better.

AutumnEssentials20131

1. Starbucks’ Salted Caramel Mocha Lattes: The baristas at my local Starbucks are wonderful- not only because they know my name and my order without even having to ask anymore, but because they also knew that the Tuesday morning after Labor Day, I was coming in to dive headfirst into their Fall menu, and they were prepared for it. Screw pumpkin spice (which makes me gag.) I’m all about the salted caramel mocha lattes- hot, of course- 100%. Rich chocolate, creamy caramel, and a pinch (not an overwhelming amount) of salt, with a shot of espresso to get me going in the morning- or to give me a pick-me-up in the afternoon- or whenever I crave it, really. I’m so addicted to this drink that I’ve all but practically injected it directly into my bloodstream. It’s my absolute favorite until they break out the red holiday cups and the peppermint mocha & gingerbread lattes.

It tastes even better with one of Starbucks’ pumpkin & cream cheese muffins- another limited edition menu item I wish I could hoard in bulk amounts and enjoy all year long, and if you’re not into caffeine (or if you like me and should probably cut back on it-) Starbucks offers salted caramel hot chocolate, too- which is just as delicious and won’t give you the jitters.

AutumnEssentials20132

2. A Warm, Rich, Scented Candle: I usually have candles burning around my place year-round. In the Spring, I stick to light florals and “clean” fragrances, and in the Summer, I like to light citrus-y, tropical candles (think strawberry daiquiri  or coconut,) but I reserve my heavier, more musky and spicier scented candles for the Fall. I’ve been enjoying the above-pictured “vanilla chai” one from Yankee Candle (I’m from New England. Of course it would be a Yankee Candle) for the past couple of weeks. It fills my bedroom and adjacent hallway and rooms with this incredibly delicious, comforting vanilla and cinnamon fragrance.

Next on my list of candles to burn is “salted caramel” (surprise, surprise) and “cozy sweater.”

AutumnEssentials20133

AutumnEssentials20134

3. Bold Boots: I’m practically inseparable from my black Vera Wang knee-high boots. I wear them almost constantly (even when it’s not seasonally appropriate,) because they’re effortlessly chic and oh-so-comfy. I recently saw these colorful cowboy boots at the French Twist Boutique in Natick, and it was love at first sight. Not only are they comfortable, but the colors go with so many pieces from my fall wardrobe. It’s already started to get chillier outside, so I’ve been pairing these with tights, leggings, and, as pictured, skinny jeans. They’re just phenomenal.

AutumnEssentials20135

4. Darker Palettes: In the Summer, my makeup consists of mostly neutrals and bronze tones with the occasional pop of bright lip gloss or neon nail polish. In Autumn, I like to add darker, richer colors to my eyes, lips, and fingertips: deep violet, dark brown, charcoal grey, merlot, and, like my manicure pictured above, hunter green. I try not to wear too much of the palette all at once, since the “vampy” look never worked well for me- but minimal makeup with a vibrant purple smoky eye, or a wine-colored matte lipstick, as the focal point of the face? It looks stunning this time of year.

AutumnEssentials20136

AutumnEssentials20137

5. The Dependable Hoodie/Sweatshirt: Sometimes, just sometimes, when I’m running errands on colder days, or lounging with friends on a patio at night, or going for a walk to look at the leaves changing colors- fashion takes a backseat to comfort and I reach for the good ol’ hoodie/sweatshirt. It’s a staple in New England, and Fall hasn’t truly arrived until everyone breaks theirs out of their closets. My go-to is my Dropkick Murphys zip-up hooded sweatshirt. It’s about 2-3 sizes too big, but it’s beyond comfortable and keeps me warm in the early mornings and evenings.

“Autumn Essentials” not pictured: All the scarves ever in a wide variety of patterns and colors, oversized cozy sweaters and jumpers, flannel-lined leggings, a heated blanket with a good book to curl up and read under it, a beanie to keep your head warm and your hair dry, an umbrella for those especially rainy and dreary days, an entire day to go for the longest of long drives to look at the Fall foliage, pumpkin ale and hard apple cider, a stack of horror movies for a marathon with your friends as Halloween approaches, a good facial spray for on-the-go relief in chillier temperatures, a sturdy tote bag to bring for apple picking, and the will to carry on when Winter arrives again.

What are some of your “Autumn Essentials?”

Ipsy Bag: September 2013 Review.

Comment 1 Standard

September2013IpsyBag1

September2013IpsyBag2

September2013IpsyBag3

For September, ipsy went with a “Classic Beauty” theme, featuring products to create timeless looks that have been in style for decades: smoldering smoky eyes, perfectly defined liner, or a bold red lip. I’ve been playing around with the products these past few days, either using them all at once or mixing and matching- and while I didn’t exactly fall in love with this month’s bag, it was fun to doll myself up like Marilyn Monroe for a bit.

What I Received:

Chella “Ivory Lace” Highlighter Pencil

Starlooks Obsidian Kohl Eye Pencil

NYX Single Eye Shadow in “White Pearl”

Elizabeth Mott “It’s So Big” Volumizing Mascara

Cailyn Cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm in “Big Apple”

Product # 1: Chella “Ivory Lace” Highlighter Pencil ($18)

Typically when I highlight the inner corners of my eyes or under the arch of my eyebrows, I use a light/neutral matte eye shadow and blend accordingly. This pencil, which is less of an ivory color and closer to a fair skin-tone, was a surprisingly nice substitute. The pencil went on creamy, not scratchy, and was easy to blend with my fingertips. My eye area looked brighter, making me appear more awake (which proved to be a lifesaver after I stayed out nearly all night over the weekend,) and apart from that little miracle, the pencil was also nice for quick touch-ups around the rest of my face, too- i.e. covering freckles and/or imperfections.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This highlighter is mess-free and easy to carry, making it one of those products that fit conveniently into your bag in the case of what I call a “out all night- need a pick me up” emergency. Even better? You don’t need to use a lot of this pencil to get decent coverage and color- which means you get your money’s worth.

Product # 2: Starlooks Obsidian Kohl Eye Pencil ($12)

Despite this black matte eyeliner being advertised as “ultra-soft” and “creamy”, I found it to be stiff and almost painful to apply. Maybe it’s because I’m so used to gel liners, or maybe I just got a dud pencil that had somehow hardened up, but this pencil did NOT go on smoothly, even after I used a primer along my lid and lash line. It took a few attempts to get my cat-eye to look semi-even and not flaky, but the liner only lasted a few hours. When I checked a mirror about four hours after I’d first applied it, it had already started to smudge and fade down into the outer corners of my eyes.

Would I Purchase?: No. This eyeliner was a hassle to apply, and even more of a hassle to keep in place. I’ll stick to my gel liners, which glide on easily and don’t budge or require reapplications for 10x longer than this pencil did.

Product # 3: NYX Single Eye Shadow in “White Pearl” ($4.50)

September2013IpsyBag4

I’ve heard some good things about NYX. Their pricing is reasonable and their products apparently give great results. I was looking forward to trying one of their highly pigmented shadows in this month’s bag. To my dismay, I received a very bright, very shimmery silvery-white color. I haven’t worn a shade like this since I was in Jr. High (back when pink frosted lipstick was also a thing.) Even still, I applied it. The color, not very pigmented at all, gave my eyelids a sort of weird sheen that, even with primer, didn’t last all that long. By mid-day, the sheen was nearly gone, leaving just my eyeliner and mascara behind, and although I didn’t much care for the color in the first place- I wasn’t impressed with the formula at all.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. I wouldn’t try this color again, but I really would like to give NYX shadows a second chance after all the hype I’ve heard about them. I wouldn’t be opposed to spending the $4.50 to try a brighter, bolder shade to compare pigmentation and longevity.

Product # 4: Elizabeth Mott “It’s So Big” Volumizing Mascara ($19.99)

I’m a sucker for clever or cutely named cosmetics. This mascara was no exception. The name wasn’t the only thing that caught my attention when trying this product, but also the hourglass shaped brush. When I first opened the tube, I noticed the mascara itself seemed to clump on the bristles, which I should have taken as some kind of warning. It didn’t get much better when I actually applied it to my lashes. After two coats, my lashes were definitely thicker, and by “thicker”, I mean “stuck together.” I had to use a brush to separate my lashes and work the mascara through from base to tip- which, admittedly, didn’t make them look half bad when I was done.

Would I Purchase?: No. The finished look, after applying and combing the mascara through my lashes- wasn’t horrible– but it definitely wasn’t worth the extra steps and this mascara definitely isn’t worth the $20 price tag. I can achieve better results (sans-brush and with one coat) with other mascaras. “It’s So Big” fell flat.

Product # 5: Cailyn Cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm in “Big Apple” ($19)

September2013IpsyBag5

September2013IpsyBag6

The unusual and unique shape of this balm’s container, which features a built in brush handle, piqued my interest once I’d opened my ipsy bag and had me eager to try the deep, apple red matte shade- which seemed more daytime appropriate than other, brighter red lipsticks and lip balms I’ve tried in the past. This balm applied easily enough with the tiny brush, and gave decent color with only a few swipes across my lips- however, it didn’t last. After a couple of hours, the color had faded, peeled, and sort of feathered out to the edges of my mouth, making my lips looked more chapped and dry than anything.

Speaking of dry- this balm pretty much sucked ANY moisture out of my lips. After I’d carefully removed it, I had to continually apply copious amounts of chapstick, hydrating balms, moisture-rich lipsticks, and finally, Vaseline, for DAYS afterwards to get my lips to feel even mildly comfortable again. Even now as I write this, they still feel a little dry. Not as bad as a few days ago- but still dry.

Would I Purchase?: No. This lip balm was such a disappointment. As nice as the color was, it didn’t last long at all- and the extremely drying, cracked, and otherwise unpleasant feeling it gave my lips long after I’d removed it was horrid.

September2013IpsyBag7

With the exception of the highlighter pencil, this month’s ipsy bag was pretty underwhelming. I don’t expect to be blown away each and every month (especially for a $10 subscription) but overall, the September bag was a let down. I’m hoping October’s will be better.

“Pumpkin Spice” – A Playlist for Autumn ’13.

There’s no better time of year to listen to dreamy (or dreary,) relaxing songs than Autumn. Putting together a playlist for the season is one of my favorite things to do in the beginning of September. I get to re-visit old favorites and blend in some newer tracks, too. This year, I created this mix, which includes some old Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, and Wilco, as well as more recent songs from Lorde, Of Monsters and Men, and The Lumineers- among others.

I’m quite smitten with it, and I hope anyone who gives it a listen will be, too!

GLOSSYBOX: August 2013 Review.

August2013GlossyBox1

August2013GlossyBox2

Let me just start this post off by saying this review almost didn’t happen. The August Glossybox, which I was actually supposed to get for free after redeeming my accrued Glossydots (a reward points system,) was briefly lost in the mail. After contacting both Glossybox customer support, and then the USPS itself- the package was eventually located at a facility in Pennsylvania and shipped to me immediately. Better late than never, of course.

The theme for this box, “Bohemian Summer,” included products fit for the transition from the last hot, humid days of Summer into the chillier, crisp early weeks of Fall, and included skincare, hair care, and makeup. I also received a cute denim pouch from GUESS as a bonus item, as well as a 30% off coupon that can be used in-store or on Guess.com. I’m in the market for some new jeans- so it should come in handy.

Product # 1: Sue Devitt Triple C-Weed Pressed Powder ($28)

When it comes to setting powders, I’ve always preferred loose powders to pressed ones. From past experiences, loose powders give me better coverage and provide longer staying power for my makeup without looking caked on or chalky. However, when I’m traveling or in a rush, those neat little compacts can certainly come in handy. When I read that this particular brand of pressed powder was infused with green tea and vitamin C, both of which are good for my skin, I bit the bullet and decided to give it a try.

Unlike other powders I’ve received in the past, this one matched my skin tone perfectly. It applied evenly, smoothly, and gave decent coverage with a lovely matte finish. My skin looked and felt soft to the touch. Any shine in my T-zone was quickly covered- however- after only a couple of hours- that very same area began to look as though the powder had been caked on and I quickly had to reapply more to correct it.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. While I do still prefer loose powders, a product like this is great for quick, mess-free touch-ups. While I was disappointed with how quickly I had to re-apply more of the powder, I could see myself putting some of this on if I wanted to run out to do some errands without putting a full face of makeup on.

In other words, this powder is great for quick coverage for a short amount of time, but if you’re looking for something to give you consistent coverage for the whole day- skip this product.

Product # 2: ModelCo Eyeshadow Duo in “Bronzed Goddess” ($25)

Summer 2013 was definitely my season of neutral tones, and I was ready to go out this weekend to pick up a couple of violets, greens, and blues for my eyes for the Fall/Winter until I saw this shimmery eye shadow compact in my Glossybox, and opted to give neutrals a couple more weeks. Although it’s hard to tell in the photograph (and it was hard for me to tell in the packaging, as well,) this eye shadow duo- which includes a rich chocolate brown and a light cream color- is VERY sparkly. I actually did a double take after I’d finished applying it to one eye because the amount of sparkle caught me off guard. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s not like applying globs of glitter to your eyelid or anything. This shadow actually goes on easily without flaking or clumping together. After I adjusted to the sparkle, I thought it looked rather pretty on my eyes, especially out in the sunlight.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I’d actually love to try more color combinations of this formula of shadow. The colors in “Bronzed Goddess” were very nice, especially for the Summer, but I’d love to see the same amount of sparkle and pigmentation in a rich plum shade or an olive green sometime.

Product # 3: Anatomicals “Spray Misty For Me” Facial Spritz ($9)

As the temperatures begin to drop, keeping my skin hydrated against frigid climates definitely becomes a priority. I use stronger moisturizers, and more often throughout the day. Unfortunately, with my work schedule, stopping to take my makeup off, reapply moisturizer, and then reapply my makeup is simply out of the question. Enter facial sprays- which I am a big fan of- not only because of the results I get from them, but also because of the convenience. Whether sprayed on over makeup or on a bare, clean face- these spritzers offer instant cooling hydration to skin without ruining cosmetics or making your face feel greasy.

“Spray Misty For Me” from Anatomicals gave me all the aforementioned perks, and then some. Packed with lavender, peppermint, aloe, and witch hazel- this spray smelled amazing on top of being incredibly refreshing. Also, a but unrelated, but the packaging, which included a cartoon drawing of Clint Eastwood on the back, was very entertaining:

See?!

Would I Purchase?: Yes! The refreshing, cooling feeling on my skin, the relaxing fragrance, and the quirky packaging had me sold on this facial spritz. This is my new “must have” in my purse for the Fall. It’s just a great product overall, and for $9 a bottle, you really can’t go wrong.

Product # 4: Jelly Pong Pong Lip Blush ($18)

Ever the lip color addict, this bold berry/red balm was the first product from the August Glossybox I tried. Although the packaging has this color listed as “cranberry,” it applied as a bright pink, almost neon purple tone on my lips- which, while sounding cool on paper, didn’t really suit my skin tone all that well. I looked washed out the few times I wore this, since it was so bright that it pretty much drained the rest of the color out of my face.

Longevity wise, this balm didn’t last at all. After a few sips of coffee, resulting in numerous lip prints all over the rim of my cup, and this balm’s color completely disappeared, as did it’s moisturizing benefits.

Would I Purchase?: No. I think I’ll stick to other balms I’ve used in the past, or moisturizer enriched long-wear lipsticks. Between the weird and unflattering color, the speed in which it vanished after I applied it, and the lack of long-lasting hydration benefits for my lips, this product was unfortunately a let-down.

Product # 5: Novex Brazilian Keratin Hair Treatment Cream ($4.99)

Keratin treatments at the salon where I typically touch up my red cost a pretty penny, so when I saw this otherwise inexpensive container of “Brazil’s #1 keratin treatment,” I was a little skeptical. The directions say to leave the pleasant scented cream in slightly dry hair, from root to tip, for three minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Not entirely sure how many miracles this could work in a mere three minutes, I left the cream on for five, and then rinsed- and what a difference! Once my hair dried, it felt softer, smoother, and looked a lot shinier. I was very surprised, to say the least. For $4.99 a jar, and with what I achieved after just one use (so far,) I think I’ve found the perfect, cheaper alternative to the expensive treatments I’ve paid for to get similar results in the past.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This would make an incredible weekly treatment for dry, damaged hair- especially in the colder months. Each one of my curls was nourished through and through and best of all- they stayed that way long after I applied and rinsed the cream out.

Despite the delay in receiving my August Glossybox, overall I was very pleased with it. The facial spritz and the keratin hair treatment cream were fantastic Fall finds, and the eye shadow and denim GUESS pouch were fun bonuses. I’m looking forward to continuing to use up what’s left of my samples, sans-lip balm, while I wait for my September box!
