April 2016: In a Nutshell.

April2016IAN01

How in the world are we already in May?! How did that happen? It feels like Spring only just started (with a little fight from the Winter with some final flurries and sleet a few weeks ago) and Summer is already on the horizon- getting ready to push itself into the picture. I’m still trying to organize and enjoy my Spring wardrobe, for crying out loud!

But before I get ahead of myself and go into all of the things I have planned for May and the impending Summertime fun, I have to tip my hat to April- one of the busiest months I’ve had in a while! The most notable thing about this past month was that I was rarely home for most of it. I had headed down to Virginia and D.C. for a long weekend at the beginning of the month, then divided my time between work and Western Massachusetts (where I ultimately turned down the apartment I had mentioned falling in love with back in March because it’s location was, unfortunately, not convenient enough for my commute to/from work after some research and test navigation)– and rounded out the end of April with a long stay near the base of Mount Washington where I got back in touch with nature in a pretty unexpected and thrilling way.

April2016IAN02

April2016IAN03

Last weekend, Sean and I headed up to Bretton Woods, New Hampshire for a couple of days at the Mount Washington Hotel and Resort– a hotel we’d spotted during a weekend outing in the same area a couple of years ago and had added to our collective “To Do” list ever since. I had this past weekend (as well as this current weekend!) off due to some training at work I had participated in- so we took the opportunity to take a mini-trip together since we’ve both been so busy and preoccupied with our jobs and other plans.

For those who might think the hotel- isolated within a mountain range and with Mount Washington looming not far in the distance- looks a little like something out of ‘The Shining’- you’re not wrong! While the actual Overlook Hotel (really called the Stanley Hotel) is located in Colorado- hotel staff at the Mount Washington Hotel told Sean and I that Stephen King was inspired to pen ‘The Shining’ after a stay there way back when.

And I can see how he’d be inspired. Not only is the resort sprawling and MASSIVE– but it’s still got historical charm, too. The furnishings in the lobby, the outdoor promenades, and even our room- were elegant and old fashioned.

And yeah, the place is rumored to be haunted, too- with the room reported to have the most supernatural activity being just a couple doors down from where Sean and I stayed. We didn’t see any ghosts while we wandered around the property, though- not even late at night when most of the hotel’s common areas were pretty much deserted.

April2016IAN07

The resort had plenty of room to move around and plenty to do- including indoor  & outdoor pools, a spa, gift shops, it’s own post office (!!!), stables for horseback riding, hiking trails, fire pits for roasting marshmallows, a small cinema, a former-speakeasy-turned-underground-bar, a cafe and an arcade- all of which Sean and I explored and took advantage of- and the food the hotel served was pretty incredible, too. After we’d arrived, Sean and I had dinner in one of the main dining halls where I’d all but licked my plate clean after wolfing down a REALLY good meal- and the following morning’s brunch- with a seat overlooking the mountains- was one of the best I’ve had in years (I ate so. much. salmon.)

The entrance to the resort's bar, 'The Cave'.

The entrance to the resort’s bar, ‘The Cave’.

When your hobbies follow you on the road.

When your hobbies follow you on the road.

On Sunday, our last day at the hotel and resort- Sean and I took advantage of the nearby ski area- signing up for an afternoon of hiking, rappelling, and zip-lining through and across the mountain ridges. I’d never rappelled or zip-lined before, but after a couple of hours of adrenaline rushes and dangling REALLY high in the air- I think I got the hang of it. Our tour guides were awesome, supportive, and very funny guys- and Sean and I had a lot of fun getting to know them and the handful of others in our group who had a similar idea and had fearlessly joined along with us.

April2016IAN011

Those are just some of the shots of us in action. It was a BLAST- although it got pretty cold up there on the mountaintops!

Sean and I have already vowed to head back to the resort later on this Summer to participate in the warmer-weather activities (horseback riding! Swimming!) we didn’t get around to this time. I’m so excited. I loved the place and I definitely want to go back as soon as possible.

And now with May arriving tomorrow- and the weather FINALLY staying somewhat consistent in recent days/weeks- I’m hoping to spend even more time outdoors and on the road. I have a few more recipes up my sleeve, a couple more ‘Closet Crushes’ to share- as well as my Spring/Summer fitness tips & tricks for anyone else who is looking for some ways to feel a little better post-Winter-blues. I’ve also got a fun giveaway I’m finalizing as a little pick-me-up in preparation for Summer- and a whole lot more to share!

So long, April. You were beautiful, adventurous- and quite daring!

POPSUGAR Must Have Box: April 2016

Leave a comment Standard

POPSUGARApril201601

Two posts in one day? #blessed indeed!

Actually, I just wanted to wrap up my monthly subscription box posts before May rolled in- and thought I’d go ahead and share what I received in April’s POPSUGAR ‘Must Have’ box- the last to arrive this month due to a delay in shipping that the company was kind enough to send a notice to subscribers about earlier this month.

I wasn’t upset by any means, especially when the ‘Must Have’ box finally arrived and I saw how HUGE it was compared to past ones I’ve received. My poor mail-lady had quite the time bringing this to my door until I ran out to meet her and take it off of her hands for her.

I knew it was going to be a good one- I just didn’t know how good.

POPSUGARApril201602

Just in time for Spring, April’s ‘Must Have’ box was inspired by a series of words, specifically: FLORAL-GREEN-NATURAL-SUSTAINABLE-FRESH- and RENEWAL.  I love seeing how POPSUGAR ties their items into their themes every month- because they always think outside the box and surpass expectations in the best way possible. I’ve been really looking forward to receiving some Springtime stuff for a while now- and I knew I’d find it in April’s assortment.

POPSUGARApril201603

I always get so excited whenever I receive a food item from POPSUGAR because they usually taste incredible- without fail. I was thrilled to find these dark chocolate-covered espresso beans from Next By Nature in April’s box because I LOVE these things! Not only are these made without a bunch of chemicals or preservatives- but they’re such a nicer alternative to an afternoon cup of coffee when I’m in need of a little perk-up to get me through the rest of my workday!

POPSUGARApril201604

My mom is an avid collector of salt and pepper shakers. I wish I could tell you why or when this obsession began- but her collection is pretty impressive so far. She has SO many, whereas I just have the same old ceramic ones that began gracing my kitchen about ten years ago.

I digress- I’m going to be passing along these glazed shakers from Canvas Home to my mom this coming weekend. They’re so cute!

POPSUGARApril201605

I wish I could tell you the difference between a tea towel and a regular dish towel- I really could- but I can’t. Instead, I’m just going to say that this multi-purpose and super-absorbent cotton towel from the Noon Design Shop is unexpectedly soft and has the cutest citrus print on it- which automatically brightens up my kitchen counter where it’s currently resting.

I’ve been poking around Noon Design Shop’s website since receiving this towel- and they have some of the coolest looking jewelry, bath and body products and kitchen decor/accessories around! I think it’s time I did a little shopping…

POPSUGARApril201606

POPSUGARApril201607

The only item that POPSUGAR told me in advance I’d be receiving this month was this hardcover copy of Chrissy Teigen’s cookbook, “Cravings”- and I was SO excited to check it out! I’m always looking for good recipes and ideas for serving meals- and I think Chrissy is ust so clever and funny.

This book has some really yummy looking stuff- like an insane mac & cheese recipe that I think I may have gasped at when I first saw it- and the photos of Chrissy and John enjoying the food are really, really cute!

My ‘Quick Eats’ posts are going to be so fun this coming month.

POPSUGARApril201608

Any day I receive a Royal Apothic product in a subscription service is a good day. I love this brand- and I was so pleased when I saw this field poppy hand cream from the company in April’s ‘Must Have’ box. I keep hand cream in my bag, at my desk at work, and in my car (you never know when you’ll need it) and as such- I tend to run out of the stuff fairly quickly- especially on dryer days. This floral-scented and intensely hydrating cream is going to make a great replacement when I’m out of my (nearly empty) current cream that’s in my purse!

POPSUGARApril201609

POPSUGARApril201610

I’ve been on the prowl for a new night cream to get me through the Spring- so I was pretty excited when I saw this uniquely packaged firming night cream from Farmacy– which turns into a lightweight oil/gel on contact with the skin. This balm hydrates and replenishes the skin, and gradually reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. I can’t wait to incorporate this into my nighttime routine before bed in the coming days!

POPSUGARApril201611

And finally, POPSUGAR was kind enough to include this $20 gift card to BloomThat– a floral delivery service that seriously has the cutest and brightest bouquets I’ve ever seen. I’m going to be using this to pick out some gorgeous flowers for my mom on Mother’s Day as part of the present I have picked out for her- and I can’t wait to see her face when she gets a look at the tulips and peonies that BloomThat has available!

Once again, POPSUGAR hit it out of the park this month. I adored every item I received in April’s ‘Must Have’ box and I thought they all tied in perfectly with the theme/inspiration the company picked out. I’m so impressed with this service and I’m so excited to see what they have in store for May!

Loot Crate: April 2016.

Leave a comment Standard

April2016LootCrate01

Next up on my list of monthly subscription services is my 2nd favorite of the bunch- Loot Crate! April’s collection of items, all based around the theme of ‘QUEST’, arrived at my door a few days after my GlossyBox turned up. With only my POPSUGAR ‘Must-Have’ box still somewhere in the mail, it gave me plenty of time to thoroughly review this one for the blog!

When I think of ‘QUEST’, the first thing that (unfortunately) comes to mind is staying up all hours of the night in my early twenties and playing ‘World of Warcraft’ with my friends as we tried to level our characters up while staying fueled on nothing but Gatorade and Domino’s Cheesy Bread. It was a dark time, indeed- but completing those quests was serious business.

I had sort of expected something WoW-related in this month’s crate- but sure enough- I was pretty surprised by what I received.

Let’s take a look inside!

April2016LootCrate02

April2016LootCrate03

First up are the usual suspects in every month’s Loot Crate- the mini magazine and collector’s pin. This month’s edition included the standard breakdown of items included in the box and some featured fan photos- but April’s issue did not have any Q&As, interviews, or games/puzzles. Instead, the magazine was chock-full of advertisements for some of Loot Crate’s other subscription options, the beginning of a ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ story that could be continued online- and a couple of random (non-alcoholic) drink recipes inspired by mystical quests throughout gaming history.

I have to say it, and not to be completely and unnecessarily picky- but the non-stops ads were a bit much. Coupled with the multiple daily e-mails I get from the company for their other services/offers- I’m starting to feel a little overwhelmed by it.

April2016LootCrate04

The first (and my favorite) item in April’s Loot Crate was this ‘Labyrinth’ t-shirt from Ripple Junction. I’m loving the colors and how soft the fabric of this shirt feels- and of course you can never have enough David Bowie in your wardrobe. I thought this was a fitting and lovely tribute to a talented man, a classic movie, and the ‘QUEST’ theme for this month’s box.

April2016LootCrate05

The ‘Labyrinth’ t-shirt wasn’t the only apparel item I received this month. Hyp Hosiery also threw in this pair of Harry Potter socks featuring a print of each of Voldemort’s Horcruxes on them. It’s funny, right before I opened this month’s crate- I was talking about how much I wanted to go to the new ‘Wizarding World of Harry Potter’- and if this isn’t a sign I should book that trip, I don’t know what is!

April2016LootCrate06

Perhaps the most bizarre item I’ve ever received in a Loot Crate, ever- I wasn’t quite sure what to make of this plastic Vikings drinking horn from Chronicle Collectibles. Unique? Definitely. Practical? Not as much. As funny as it would be to roll up to my next house party with this in tow- I think I’m going to be giving this to a friend of mine who I know will enjoy it way more than I ever could.

April2016LootCrate07

The same friend who will be getting the Vikings drink horn will also be gifted with this silicone 20-sided die shaped ice mold to add to whatever drinks they plan on using the cup for. Although the exterior of this mold doesn’t really reflect it- the photos inside the mini-mag show that the ice is supposed to come out pretty neat looking. Maybe I’ll try it out to see for myself!

April2016LootCrate08

And finally, April’s Loot Crate included this ‘Uncharted 4′ mini-poster from Playstation that I’ll be gifting to a gamer friend of mine who is also a huge Nathan Drake fan- although I gotta’ say the quote on this one is pretty badass. I really like that and will probably use it as a personal mantra someday in the future!

All in all, while I really liked the shirt and the socks in this month’s crate- April’s box was a bit underwhelming to me.  It wasn’t the worst assortment of items I’ve ever received since I first started subscribing to the service- but it definitely wasn’t the best, either. I’m not entirely sure the ‘QUEST’ theme was represented all that well here.

Yesterday, it was revealed that May’s theme would be ‘POWER’- so I’m curious to see what Loot Crate includes in the box to really implement that idea.

‘Til next time!

GLOSSYBOX: April 2016 Review.

Leave a comment Standard

April2016GlossyBox01

After last week’s unforeseen and unfortunate loss of a cultural icon- I wanted to work through the mourning process and get back to schedule and to the basics. Namely: my monthly subscription service reviews.  Having only recently received my April POPSUGAR ‘Must Have’ box and Loot Crate over the past couple of days due to late and/or delayed shipments, I thought I would write and post my reviews based on the order the boxes were delivered to me and kick off this installment with the first to arrive at my door this month- my April GlossyBox.

April’s GlossyBox contained two full-sized products and three deluxe samples that predominantly covered skincare but also included a hair styling product, a makeup product, and a nail polish (always one of my favorite things to receive!) The selection of items and the box itself did not have a specific theme- but with the Summer months approaching- I’m hoping GlossyBox will have some fun collaborations to liven things up a little.

WHAT I RECEIVED:

ALTERNA Haircare CAVIAR CC Cream for Hair 10-in-1 Complete Correction

Studio | 10 Brow Lift Perfecting Liner (*Full Size!*)

Biossance ‘THE NOURISHER’ Precious Rose Face Oil

Leighton Denny Expert Nails Nail Polish in ‘Pillow Talk’ (*Full Size!*)

Unani Dermo Defense Face Mask

Let’s take a look at everything one-by-one.

April2016GlossyBox02

Product # 1: ALTERNA Haircare CAVIAR CC Cream for Hair 10-in-1 Complete Correction ($25)

This actually isn’t the first time I’ve tried this product through GlossyBox. Back in 2014 when the company teamed up with BERGDORF GOODMAN, I had received a deluxe-sized sample tube of this very same styling cream- and I had absolutely loved it.

Nearly two years later and despite the packaging looking slightly different- I’m still as big a fan of this product as ever. It makes my hair ridiculously soft and frizz-free, tames my curls to give them a beautiful and effortless wavy appearance, and it doesn’t require using a TON of product since a little bit of the cream goes such a long way-  even with my thick hair- so having to buy in bulk isn’t really necessary (just a life choice since I like this stuff so much.)

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I continue to swear by this cream. No matter what type of hair you have- this product is a must-buy game changer. It has completely simplified my morning styling routine and whenever I use it- my hair always looks and feels incredible. On most days, this is the only product I need/use in my curls!

April2016GlossyBox03

April2016GlossyBox04

Product # 2: Studio | 10 Brow Lift Perfecting Liner ($20)

I’ve been getting experimental with my brows lately- and by “experimental”- I mean I’ve been too lazy to pluck or wax them properly so I’ve just been letting them grow out until my next appointment at the salon where I’m sure I’ll clean them up a little. Until then, all I really do is use a brow gel and brush to keep them even and in place and go about my day. I’ve never really been in need of a pencil- especially a hard-tipped one like this brow pencil/highlighter duo I received from Studio | 10.

The cool thing about this product (and this brand in general) is that with every one of these brow pencils sold- the company donates one to a person undergoing cancer treatment who may need a pick-me-up from the side effects of their treatments/medications and who could use a boost in morale and self-confidence. Having known a few people who have courageously battled cancer throughout my lifetime- I think it’s the little things that make all the difference- and sending someone something as small as a little makeup is a sweet gesture.

Despite being hard-tipped, both ends of this pencil actually applied pretty smoothly. Unfortunately, the colors didn’t look quite “right” on my skin tone (the brown was too noticeable and the highlighter wasn’t noticeable enough) and I couldn’t get either end to blend to look more subtle and natural. I think I’ll be sticking to my brow gel and brush for now.

Would I Purchase?: No, not for myself- but given the buy one/give one aspect of this liner- I wouldn’t be opposed to picking up a few for some of my girlfriends’ makeup collections. It would be supporting a nice cause and they’d probably have more luck getting this pencil to look right on them than I did!

April2016GlossyBox05

Product # 3: Biossance ‘THE NOURISHER’ Precious Rose Face Oil ($72)

In a past GlossyBox, I had received a multi-purpose Biossance oil that I had enjoyed very much as I slathered it on my cuticles, the ends of my hair, and my face and neck. This oil- a face-only formula that smelled strongly of freshly picked roses whenever I uncapped the bottle- was obviously a little different. I used this oil as directed- applying with a cotton ball in the morning before my makeup and at night after thoroughly cleansing my face before bed. Although it took a few minutes to fully absorb, I noticed that my skin gradually became softer and smoother with each passing day- and I didn’t have any sort of bad reaction or breakout from this oil- even with the fragrance and even when I applied sunscreen after using it in the mornings. Not bad at all!

Would I Purchase?: Yes! Much like the last oil I received from Biossance- the price tag on this product is a little steep- but it’s worth it given the results that can be achieved. I think when it comes time for me to splurge a little bit on myself and replenish some of my skin care- I’d consider ordering a full-sized bottle of this oil to keep on hand since it worked wonders for me. It made my skin look and feel hydrated and supple all day & night long- and I believe it would be suitable for any and all skin types, too.

April2016GlossyBox06

Product # 4: Leighton Denny Expert Nails Nail Polish in ‘Pillow Talk’ ($16)

Whenever I receive a nail polish in any of my subscription services, I typically take a photo of how the polish looks on my nails since it can turn out much different than how it appears in the bottle. Unfortunately, shortly after my last manicure- I headed off to New Hampshire for a weekend in nature- and by the time I got done hiking/rock climbing/zip-lining (that recap is coming up shortly)– my nails weren’t exactly the most photogenic things. In fact, my hands pretty much took a beating- and I’m trying to get them back into nice condition again.

I digress! The color of this long-lasting lacquer was lovely (say that three times fast.) A bright combo of pink/red- this polish really stood out on my nails pre-trip to New Hampshire and is going to be a nice addition to my Summer colors when it comes time to get pedicures again.

Also? I just love the name of the color, too.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! It’s hard for me to locate a nail polish I don’t like (it’s happened, for sure- but those instances are far and few between) and this shade is another winner for me. I love the color and the longevity- and I’ll hopefully have a photo of how it looks on my fingertips up on my Instagram once my hands are healed up!

April2016GlossyBox07

Product # 5: Unani Dermo Defense Face Mask (N/A)

Finally, the last product in April’s GlossyBox was this gel-like face mask for sensitive skin from Unani, which I unfortunately couldn’t find a price listing for. The mask, lightweight and meant to be used 2-3 times a week, sank into my skin with ease and rinsed off with no complications after I’d kept it on for approximately ten minutes- briefly leaving my skin feeling soft and conditioned- although not necessarily “clean” the way most face masks do.

The issue with this mask arose shortly thereafter- when a series of bumps along my cheeks appeared- followed by more bumps along my forehead and chin. This mask made me break out- badly- and some serious extraction and salicylic acid application was required to clear up the damage.

Just to make sure that the reaction was a result of the mask itself and not the side-effects of my period- I tried the mask again a few days later- and the same exact thing happened (although not as badly the second time around.) Once again, I had to scrub and nurture my skin to clear up the blemishes- and some of them still haven’t gone away.

Would I Purchase?: No. Out of all the products in April’s GlossyBox- this one was the worst. This mask temporarily ruined my skin- and I’ll be steering clear from it while I wait for the reaction it caused to eventually clear itself up and my face can return to it’s normal oily/combination state.

April2016GlossyBox08

April’s GlossyBox also included an additional voucher for 50% off (the code was edited out in the above photo) a kit from the company Doorstep Desserts– who make weekly deliveries of ingredients to bake/cook different types of desserts depending on subscribers preferences and pay plans. The concept is pretty neat, and we all know how much I love to bake a good dessert- so I think I’ll be using this one in the future to see if the company is as good as it sounds!

Overall, April’s GlossyBox was a pretty good composition of different products- and although two of them were just not for me at all- overall I was pleased with what I received (especially another sample of the CC cream for my hair!)

Next month’s GlossyBox will be free thanks to my cashing in my accrued GlossyDots- and I’m going to take the opportunity to determine if I want to stay a subscriber or not since I’ve been on the fence with the company for quite a while now.

We’ll see how it goes in May!

xx

Today/Tonight’s blog post was supposed to be a review of my April GlossyBox- but given the circumstances- I thought I’d take the opportunity to pay tribute to an unparalleled genius, a musical and cultural icon, and a man who has inspired and who will continue to inspire me throughout my life, instead.

2016 has been pretty brutal with the celebrity deaths so far. David Bowie and Alan Rickman dying within days of each other back in January was a one-two combo that sent music and movie fans alike reeling  in shock and sadness- and just this past week the world bid farewell to both Doris Roberts and former WWF/WWE star and sports entertainment pioneer Joan “Chyna” Laurer.

However, yesterday’s announcement of the unexpected and premature passing of Prince Rogers Nelson made the world feel as though it had come to a standstill- and I think many people are still trying to regain their bearings- myself included.

I was brought up in a musically diverse household- something I’m so very proud of and so grateful for because I was able to learn, absorb and appreciate different types of artistry and cultures from a very young age. My father was a former drummer and classic rock/Beatles buff. My mother loved MoTown and jazz. My two older brothers’ tastes ranged anywhere from heavy metal, 80s hair bands, punk and ska- and the occasional foray into gangsta’ rap- which went over about as well as you’d expect in our predominantly conservative, suburban neighborhood where we grew up.

And while all of our tastes were definitely different- my family collectively loved certain artists. Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston come to mind almost immediately- and so does Prince.

I was born in 1986- two years after ‘Purple Rain’ well, reigned supreme- both at the box office and on the charts- but much like Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’- ‘Purple Rain’ was an album that was on heavy rotation in my household from as far back as I can remember. If ‘Billie Jean’ was the song that had made me want to take dance classes as a child- then ‘When Doves Cry’ was the one that had made me want to play guitar when I was still pint-sized. The album just had that affect on me- and when I was finally old enough to watch the movie and actually understand it’s plot and it’s characters (shout-out to Morris Day- who I love oh so much!)– I fully grasped why it was such a big deal to so many in the two years before I was even on this Earth.

It was art- and it made the music take on an even more profound meaning when you saw how it intertwined with the story and the struggles of “The Kid”.

Via Tumblr

Via Tumblr

‘Purple Rain’ was the thing that got me hooked on Prince when I was still a young girl- and his ever-evolving music, image, style, and overall cool, mysterious and provocative demeanor KEPT me hooked. Every song, every album, and every performance I’d catch on television was electric and innovative. Prince not only broke racial, gender and sexual barriers- but he made it look so effortless while he did it. He was one of, if not THE ONLY man who could rock lace, ruffles, eyeliner and high-heeled ankle boots (or ass-less chaps- because we all remember that one) with such unabashed confidence- but still be irresistible and desirable while he did it.

Prince re-defined and re-constructed any previous established tropes of masculinity and played a definitive role in my own sexuality and my preferences in men as I grew up. Fun, TMI fact- the song ‘Cream’ was playing when I lost my virginity- which was really the only redeemable moment in what was otherwise an awkward, fumbling disaster (I wish I could have personally thanked Prince for that one, honestly.)

And through Prince I discovered so many other unique, talented musicians and performers- each with their own style and visions to bring to the table. A whole new world of music and art was opened up to me- and it was through that exploration into his protégés and his collaborations that I learned more about myself and about a scene where it truly felt like anyone and everyone could be themselves and still belong. We all had a place there. We were all welcome.

For someone like me- someone who never felt like I really belonged anywhere for a very long time- this was a huge deal.

Prince and his music united people like that- in a way that I truly feel only someone as brilliant and as eccentric as him, could. He was one of a kind and a trailblazer through and through. Everyone has a favorite Prince song- a song they shamelessly sing along to in the shower, or in their car, or one that gets them out on the floor to dance or pushes them to work out a little harder at the gym to because it’s so funky that you can’t NOT move or groove to it. Ask anyone what theirs is- and I swear to you- they will have one (if not more than one.)

And even through moments of unusual or unexpected behavior- like briefly changing his name to a symbol, or his strict policies on fans sharing his music, or his dabbles into social media- Prince remained endearing, charismatic, and cool. Where many artists struggle to maintain their relevance in pop culture- Prince never had to try. He was always a constant fixture- omnipresent in a way- which makes his death all the more horrible for the people who knew him personally and the fans who adored him. Despite his incredible body of work over these past decades- it feels as though we’ve been left with a void that none of us are quite sure how to fill except by looking back, reminiscing and listening to those very same songs that first made us fall in love with him all those years ago.

Prince02

Since the news broke of his passing, people around the world have been sharing their favorite Prince songs/memories/performances. I’ve re-watched his amazing guitar solo during a cover of ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ at the 2004 Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, I’ve teared up during clips of his perfect Super Bowl halftime performance from 2007 (a set I locked my then-boyfriend at the time out of the house to see so that he wouldn’t interrupt it in any capacity because I’m pretty sure he was jealous of my affection for Prince) and I have laughed watching Dave Chappelle re-enact Charlie Murphy’s tale of the time Prince and The Revolution completely schooled him and his friends during a game of basketball (Game. Blouses.)

Even MTV, VH1, and BET have done the unexpected and have started showing music videos- HIS music videos- again as a tribute and a nostalgic nod to an era gone by- lost to reality TV shows and scripted teen comedies/dramas.

And through it all, there are a few things that remain perfectly clear and consistent: Prince’s otherworldly talent as a musician is undeniable. His prowess as a songwriter is unmatched, and his influence- not just on music and pop culture but on the world itself- is something that we may never get to see again in our lifetimes.

When Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston died, it felt as though an important and integral part of most of our childhoods went right along with them- and the pain of losing people who had shaped us, inspired us, and influenced us so much was, at times- too much to bear- especially given the tragic circumstances of their deaths.

With Prince’s passing- the pain is just as real and just as raw- like a scab that has been picked away at a still healing wound- but his death feels less like the loss of a fond childhood memory we clung to dearly and more like the loss of a close friend or family member. One who was always around- even when they weren’t physically there before our eyes. We have been robbed of a unique and truly incredible artist and presence in this world. Someone who still had so much more to share with us all and someone who still had so much time to continue evolving, inspiring and changing history as we knew it.

In these coming days as fans mourn, remember the man and the music, and cope- let me share what I’ve learned from Prince and from being a lifelong fan:

Never be afraid or ashamed to be yourself. Never be afraid or ashamed to test and break boundaries. Never be afraid or ashamed to venture outside the “norm” and do things your own way. Free yourself of the standards and/or expectations that others have set for you and do things the way you want to do them.

Quick Eats: No-Bake Chocolate Peanut-Butter Pretzel Bars

Comments 3 Standard

ChocolatePretzelBars01

So, funny (but not really funny) story- but for years I had to be cautious about the types of pretzels I ate since generic, cheaper-brand ones would often make me break out in hives from head to toe shortly after being ingested. Be it because of whatever preservatives, sodium, or colorings were used in aforementioned brands- I’ll never know- but I learned to trust a couple of different companies over time that I could eat without needing to keep a bottle of calamine lotion and Benadryl nearby for afterwards.

I saw this recipe online recently and the photos of the finished product looked really, really good. I grabbed a couple of packages of pretzel sticks from one of my trusted snack brands and decided to try it out for myself. Whipping it up was easy enough- especially with no actual baking required- but it was the waiting to try/eat them that proved to be the most difficult part of the process!

ChocolatePretzelBars02

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 2½ cups pretzel crumbs (from about half a full-size bag)
  • 1½ cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 10 tablespoons (1¼ sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1¾ cups smooth peanut butter, divided
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • One 12-ounce bag milk chocolate chips
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup lightly crumbled/grated pretzels

OKAY, HERE’S WHAT YOU DO:

1. Lightly grease a 9-inch square baking pan with nonstick spray and then line it with parchment paper, allowing 2 inches of extra parchment to hang over the sides.

2. In a large bowl, mix the pretzel crumbs with the confectioners’ sugar to combine. In a small bowl, whisk the melted butter with the 1½ cups peanut butter and the vanilla extract to combine.

3. Add the peanut butter mixture to the pretzel mixture and stir until the crumbs are evenly coated and moistened. Pour the crumb mixture into the prepared pan and press into an even layer.

4. Place the chocolate chips in a medium-size heat-safe bowl. In a small pot, bring the cream to a simmer over medium heat. When the cream is simmering, add it to the chocolate chips and let sit 15 seconds. Stir the mixture until smooth and well combined.

5. Pour the chocolate mixture over the pressed pretzel crumb layer and spread evenly. Sprinkle the crumbled/grated pretzels evenly over the chocolate.

6. In a small bowl, stir the remaining ¼ cup peanut butter to loosen it. Microwave for 20 to 30 seconds, then drizzle the softened peanut butter over the crumbled pretzels.

7. Refrigerate until firm, 30 to 45 minutes.

8. Cut into 16 even squares. Store the bars in the refrigerator in an airtight container until ready to serve.

These squares were so, SO good! They were the perfect combination of chewy and crunchy- and sweet and salty. I’ve been indulging on these over the past couple of days and I’m looking forward to making a batch for the people in my office for the next weekend we all put in some overtime together.

And best of all? No hives!

The last time I was in Virginia, and stopped by Washington D.C.- I was on a week-long vacation with my parents during a break in my Summer college classes. We had driven down, which felt like it took 15 hours (when in reality it had only taken a little over six) and stayed at a resort that was- no exaggeration- in the middle of the woods in West Virginia. The closest civilization and WiFi connection was at a rest stop approximately several miles away.

As cut-off as we were- I had a great time. I spent my days hiking, lounging by the pool, playing mini-golf, and watching syndicated ‘Criminal Minds’ episodes on the REALLY old TV I had in my room at the resort- which in hindsight- is not an appropriate program to watch when you’re in a VERY rural, wooded area and no one can hear you scream…

… Anyway! Last week I once again made the trip to Virginia- solo this time (and in a very nice rental car because I didn’t want to put the mileage on my poor little KIA. It’s been through enough!) to stay in tiny- but very pretty- Alexandria. The trip wasn’t solely to enjoy a nice long drive or satisfy my ‘Walking Dead’ fanatic side, of course- but to attend a wedding with my BFF from San Diego, Duncan! His long-time friend Linda, who lives in the Alexandria area- was getting hitched to her now-husband, Arash- and Duncan was flying in for the ceremony.

On Friday, after a few traffic jams (thanks, New Jersey Turnpike)– I arrived in Alexandria just a couple of hours after Duncan’s flight had landed and he had gotten situated. My accommodations were MUCH different than my last stay in Virginia, by the way. I stayed at the Westin Alexandria, where the view was a little less woodsy and a little more populated- and I didn’t have to drive twenty minutes to find places to eat, shop, or check my e-mails.

The view from my hotel room. The Westin, Alexandria.

The view from my hotel room. The Westin, Alexandria.

No sooner had I checked into my room and dropped off my bag when I had to turn right back around and hurry over to Shamshiry in nearby Vienna to meet up with Duncan and introduce myself to the then soon-to-be-newlyweds for the first time at their rehearsal dinner. Arash is from what I quickly discovered is a very big and VERY fun Persian family- so Shamshiry seemed like the ideal place to get everyone together pre-nuptials to eat and toast the couple. I was so happy to see Duncan again (it’s been months) and meet some of he and Linda’s friends.

Also? I’ve never tried Persian food/dishes before- and it was really, really good!

While Friday night had been sunny but cool outside- Saturday morning was a snowy, sleeting, mess. I had opened the curtains to my hotel room, saw what was going on outside- and pretty much just closed them back up immediately and tried to forget about what was happening. THANKFULLY, the snow gradually turned to rain, and then the rain gradually turned into sunshine- and even though it was pretty cold outside for the remainder of the day- the conditions were much better for Linda and Arash’s wedding in the afternoon.

The ceremony was beautiful. I loved Linda’s dress (and the bridesmaids all looked stunning in their matching deep red colors!)  and by the time the actual ceremony had finished- we still had enough time to get over and get approved by security for the reception at Fort Belvoir. Up until now, I’d never been on an actual military base- and I wasn’t sure what to expect- but WOW that place was huge. I didn’t realize bases were pretty much isolated towns- but there was a gas station, a pizza place, a hospital, schools- and a Starbucks (granted, it was closed, but still.)

Reception Hall

Reception Hall

The only thing Fort Belvoir didn’t have was power. The electricity around a section of the base had been unexpectedly cut out by a fallen tree- and part of that section included the Officers Hall where Linda and Arash’s reception was going to take place. Despite a potential disaster- spirits remained high. The Officers Hall was gorgeous, and I think everyone was too busy admiring the scenery (and enjoying the open bar) to really notice that the lights were out. When it started to get darker and darker in the room- and candles seemed to be in high demand- the lights magically turned back on. Just in time.

Duncan and I agreed the snow/sleet and then the power outage would be a memorable (and admittedly pretty funny) story for Linda and Arash to tell years and years from now when talking about their special day.

With the lights back on and the DJs able to play some music- it didn’t take long for the party to kick off. I had SO. MUCH. FUN. dancing with Duncan, his friends, the bridesmaids, and even some of Linda and Arash’s family. The speeches from the best man, the Maid of Honor, and the proud fathers of the bride and groom were really emotional and moving- and even though I didn’t participate in the bouquet toss- I thought one of the little girls walking away with the flowers was a really sweet touch.

I absolutely love this beautiful glass wine stopper that was wrapped at my seat at the reception. So lovely!

Duncan and I stayed late into the night, but we had a few things to do the following day- and we had to bid farewell to everyone so we could head off base and back into town.

I was scheduled to drive home on Sunday afternoon, but Duncan and I had wanted to grab brunch with a friend of his who was also in town for the weekend and do a little sight-seeing, first. It’s not every day we get to spend time together- or time in D.C. for that matter- so we wanted to make the most of it.

Although the initial brunch plans fell through- we had managed to grab some great lattes at Bourbon Coffee before we went for a long stroll around the Washington Monument, the National Mall and Reflecting Pool, and The White House. The weather was considerably better throughout the afternoon than it had been in the previous days and when it came time for me to say a tearful goodbye to Duncan and head back to my car- I had left my coat in the backseat and cracked the windows down throughout my eight hour drive home.

Overall I had an INCREDIBLE time. I can’t thank Duncan enough for inviting me to be his guest and being such a gentleman throughout our weekend together (he has perfect manners!)– and I also have to thank Linda and Arash for including me in their most magical of days. Should you two ever see this post- I wish you both nothing but the best as you start this new chapter of your lives together. You’re a beautiful and inspiring couple!

I really do love Virginia and D.C.- and I’d like to go back sooner than later and for a longer stay next time!

Closet Crushes: C.K. in D.C.

BlueCKDress01

BlueCKDress03

It’s been forever and a day since I’ve done a proper “Closet Crushes” post- mainly because my usual staples in Fall/Winter aren’t really worth blogging about- but also because it’s hard to find the time to properly photograph an ensemble with my often busy and packed schedule. It’s much easier and time-friendly for me to write about my monthly subscription boxes or bad horror movies than it is for me to jump in front of a camera and hope I’m not pulling an awful face when the timer goes off (spoiler alert: I’m ALWAYS pulling an awful face.)

I had some luck with my recent trip to Alexandria/Washington D.C., however- having loved my choice of dress (and shoes!) to attend a wedding so much that I knew I had to revisit the world of fashion blogging and share it.  There’s something about Spring and incorporating actual colors into my wardrobe that makes me feel flirty and fun- and I think this sky blue Calvin Klein sheath dress- bursting with blooming white flowers- really captures that.

BlueCKDress02

I love how lightweight this dress is. It was classy enough for the church ceremony but loose-fitting and flowing enough where I could party at the reception and still be comfortable. The blue also compliments my red hair and fair skin- but it a pretty close match to my eye color, too.

When it came to shoes, I paired this dress with matching sky blue pointed toe heels (with a small heel- so that I could look fancy- not alarmingly taller than my date- and still move around!) and carried along a pair of nude flats in my bag in case my feet started to get a little sore as the night wore on. Thankfully, it wasn’t an issue.

I also carried along a white cardigan with me in case it got cold- which it most certainly did as the afternoon wore on. The cardigan did little to block the frigid temperatures as I was maneuvering to/from my rental car- and I owe my friend and date Duncan for being such a gentleman and wrapping his jacket around my shoulders more than once so I wouldn’t freeze to death!

BlueCKDress04

Since I’ve given up on my hair being anything other than curly and huge at all times (flat-ironing it takes a little more than an hour, maybe two- and I didn’t have that time to spare while I was getting ready since I had to get moving!) I let it air dry after combing some coconut milk serum and mousse through it- and kept my makeup subtle- using soft pink eye shadow, rosy/nude lipstick, and minimal blush to round out my springtime look.

Overall, I loved this entire ensemble- and I have a couple of semi-formal events coming up in the Summer where I’ll be able to wear this again (I’m not one to wear an outfit only once!)

That’s a Wrap! Dissecting Season 6 of “The Walking Dead.”

Leave a comment Standard

TheWalkingDeadSeason6PosterIt seems fitting that I should be putting this post up today, considering I’m currently sitting in my hotel room in surprisingly peaceful Alexandria (Yes- THE Alexandria!) to attend a wedding for a friend-of-a-friend later on this afternoon.

And of course I’ll be buying plenty of postcards to commemorate my mini-TWD-fan-girl moment before I leave the “Safe Zone” (Get it?! Get ittttttt?!)

I digress. By now most people have caught up with this past Sunday night’s finale to the sixth season of ‘The Walking Dead’, and those who haven’t have probably- in some way- been exposed to the fallout on social media or by word of mouth following the last agonizing moments of the episode before the credits started to roll and Chris Hardwick appeared on screen to welcome a stunned/infuriated audience to the post-‘Walking Dead’ talk show, ‘Talking Dead’.

I admit to being one of those people who, while attempting to be as least-spoiler-y as possible for my friends/followers on the West Coast, the UK, or those who were unable to watch the episode live as it aired- took to the internet to voice my cryptic frustrations and speculations for the show’s return this coming October.

But I wanted to write about the entire sixth season overall- not just the finale (which believe me, I will get to)– and like I’ve done since starting this blog circa season 3- I thought I’d compile my thoughts, likes/dislikes, the best character transformations (and the worst), my new favorite additions/plot points- and things I would have liked to see.

And also, much like my review of season five– I have a bit of a bone to pick with the writers.

In the off chance anyone reading this hasn’t had the chance to catch up with the show/season six just yet- I’m putting all my thoughts behind a “READ MORE” tag so you won’t get spoiled!

Easter Sunday! 3/27/16

Good Morning, everyone! It’s almost Friday (and unfortunately it’s also almost April Fools Day, too. Work should be interesting tomorrow.)

But before I get into surviving a day full of pranks and what I have planned in the coming weeks- I have to bid farewell to the month of March- which was both busy and chaotic (in a good way) as I began my search for a new apartment, planned out a series of day trips and adventures for my days off from work, enjoyed a wonderful Easter dinner with my family at my mom’s house this past weekend- and got promoted to a new unit/position at my job! That’s right- my preliminary 90-day trial period is over and I’ve made the cut. I’m very excited to be moving into a new part of the office later on today and working with a whole new team- although I’m going to miss my daily geek-outs with my current crew!

Sure, they’re only a three-minute walk away from where I’m going to be- but it just won’t be the same!

While I get adjusted to my new office area and wait to hear back about the apartment I think I may have found (and fallen head over heels for) the other day- I’m preparing for an equally busy April. Next week, I’m making a 6+ hour drive to Washington D.C. and Alexandria (my ‘Walking Dead’ fanatic side is freaking out right now) to attend a wedding and spend the weekend with my dearest friend Duncan from San Diego- who is flying in on Friday night. I also have a couple of scheduled trips to NYC and Vermont coming up in April- so expect plenty of photos!

If all goes according to plan, I’ll have a few more recipe posts in April, too- and my first ‘Closet Crushes’ post in nearly a year! I’ll also have my yearly wrap-up of this season of ‘The Walking Dead’ following the finale this coming Sunday (NEGAAAAANNNN!) and some details on a giveaway I’m planning to celebrate the warmer seasons!

Here’s to March being the prelude to some amazing changes and adventures in April!
