January 2014: In a Nutshell.

How is it the end of January already? It feels like I was just ringing in 2014 in NYC- and now we’re heading into February! Granted, January is usually one of the busiest months out of the year for me. Between work picking up speed after the lull of the holidays, friends’ birthdays happening one right after the other, my own birthday sneaking up on me- and the overall preparations and goal-setting for the new year- January seems to go by in the blink of an eye, without fail, every year.

Even still, I had a good month. New Years Eve and New Years Day were a blast, of course- and not even the polar vortex and lots (and lots!) of snow could slow me down while I spent time trying to keep warm with friends, networking with other bloggers, and feverishly making plans for February. I had one of the most fun and shamelessly nerdy birthdays ever, and I managed to get in a couple of good photography outings- despite the snow and dramatic temperature drops.

New Year – New York! Me all smiles in NYC 1/1/14.

February looks to be another busy month (but by choice!) I have a few adventures planned, a little bit of travel, some recent recipes I’m excited to share here, and- weather permitting- some more photography/urban exploration sessions, among other things. So far, this year is off to a lovely start.

I hope 2014 has had a wonderful beginning for all of you, as well! I just remembered that today is Chinese New Year, too, so here’s to The Year of the Horse!

2013: In a Nutshell.

I can’t believe that 2013 is coming to a close and 2014 is mere hours away. Much like last year, I’ll be spending New Years Eve dancing and drinking champagne with good friends all night long at the McKittrick Hotel in New York City. We’re forgoing catching a performance of “Sleep No More” and the pre-production dinner that’s offered to instead gallivant around Manhattan for a few hours before we go straight to the party- the theme requiring black & white attire and a masquerade ball style mask- to countdown to midnight. I’m very excited.

People often say that “time flies when you’re having fun,” and I think that statement has never been more appropriate to use than right now when describing the whirlwind of fun, adventure, accomplishments, personal growth & success, and wonderful memories I’ve made and experienced over these past twelve months- which were drastically needed after the loss of my father in 2012.

2013 was indeed my first “real” year without my dad here to share milestones with me: my birthday, a big promotion at my job, my travels and tales from the road, Father’s Day, re-connecting with my older brothers and members of our family I hadn’t seen or spoken to in years, and so many more. But whenever I started to feel sad, I thankfully had good friends and family to surround me and support me and remind me that he was very much there for everything- every moment- in spirit. Keeping his memory alive by being the best that I could be and doing the best that I could in everything I did this year helped fill the void that his absence had left in my life and in my heart. I miss him tremendously, but I think I’ve found a sense of peace.

Indeed, 2013 was the year I pulled myself up, as difficult as it was at times, and dove headfirst back into the world to live and savor each day to the fullest. I traveled- sometimes on my own just for the hell of it- I tried new things, and I met so many new people who have quickly become beloved friends. I also launched this blog on January 1st of 2013, and as a result- I’ve reached an audience of incredible people and have had wonderful interactions with so many individuals from all walks of life who follow and read my posts. I was welcomed with warm and open arms into the Boston Blogger community, and I’m so beyond grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and the doors that have opened from “Legally Redhead,” and for every single one of you who continue to support it.

From celebrating Dropkick Murphys’ latest album with the band at McGreevy’s in January, getting snowed in following the “Nemo” Nor’easter, seeing the Rolling Stones live in concert, getting the chance to meet and talk to fun, down-to-Earth celebrities like Chris Hardwick, Henry Winkler, Joey Fatone, a bunch of the cast from “The Walking Dead,” and most recently- Joe Manganiello- to taking day-trips and spending weekends in NYC, the White Mountains, and Southern California, or just doing some urban exploration and discovering fascinating places right here in and around New England.

From learning how to do the Charleston at a “Great Gatsby” themed party at a beautiful estate in Ipswich, to learning something more serious, i.e. how to control and ultimately overcome my panic attacks and Hyperventilation Syndrome. From getting my full-blown geek on at Wizard World NYC all the way to Boston Comic-Con. From looking like a very scary zombie in “The Walking Dead: Escape,” to feeling like a very scary zombie after cheering myself hoarse and into exhaustion following the Red Sox Rally after their World Series win. From all of those events- and everything in between- all the way ’til now as I’m getting ready to head into NYC- 2013 was one of the most eventful, one of the most fun, and overall, truly one of the best years I think I’ve ever had.

Here are just some of the newsworthy events, pop culture moments, and usually strange phenomenons that happened this year:

BostonMagazineMay2013

Boston Magazine’s May 2013 Cover following the tragedy.

The Boston Marathon Bombings: I think in terms of major events in 2013, especially since it hit so close to home, the April 15th bombings at the Boston Marathon comes to mind almost immediately. I, like many others, remember exactly what I was doing that beautiful, sunny afternoon when I first heard about the explosions near the finish line. I remember the panic as phone lines went down as I tried to contact my friends and loved ones, and they tried to contact me, as we all tried to make sure we were okay. I remember everyone taking to social media to provide updates to those outside city lines as all of Boston went into lock down following a shoot-out between the two terrorist brothers responsible for the bombings and police officers in Watertown, and I remember the sense of relief, and even joy in some ways- when one of the two brothers was killed and the other was finally found- alive- and taken into custody.

But more importantly- I remember the unbelievable display of bravery and heroism as police, paramedics, runners in the marathon, and bystanders- ran towards the danger following the explosions to try and help in any way they could. I remember the overwhelming response to The One Fund, which was established to help the families of those killed in the attacks and provide aid to the 250+ people who were seriously injured. I remember the emotional rendition of the National Anthem at T.D. Garden just two days after the attack where the crowd took over for Rene Rancourt and sang loud and proud. I remember the city of Boston banding together to support and care for each other during some of our darkest and uncertain days, and the sense of camaraderie through inspiring and hopeful moments throughout the year as we moved forward without fear- showing the rest of the country, and the rest of the world, what being “Boston Strong” is all about.

The NSA is watching us. ALL OF US: Men and women everywhere briefly second-guessed sending selfies or sexting when it was revealed that the National Security Agency had been monitoring millions upon millions of phone calls, messages, e-mails, and data collected without warrants from Americans, as well as allies to the country- sparking resentment and protest from citizens who felt their right to privacy was not only invaded, but disregarded all together. The leak of the NSA’s controversial surveillance tactics came from Edward Snowden, a former contractor to the NSA who went from relatively unknown to international fugitive in a matter of weeks until being granted temporary asylum in Russia. While some thought Snowden was nothing more than a criminal, many seemed to support his efforts to expose and inform the world of the National Security Agency’s spying operations.

Since the fall-out, there has been heated debate as to whether or not the NSA’s surveillance is a direct violation of the Fourth Amendment. Representatives for the NSA have stated that any monitoring is strictly for defense purposes, i.e.- to thwart any possible terrorist threats.

Jodi Arias, George Zimmerman, and Whitey Bulger: 2013 saw three high profile trials come to explosive conclusions. First was Jodi Arias, who after weeks of gruesome and often scandalous testimony, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the brutal killing of her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander. Jodi is currently awaiting a decision to determine whether or not she’ll receive the death penalty.

Then there was George Zimmerman, whose shooting and killing of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin as he walked back to his father’s home from a convenience store sparked widespread debate over racial profiling and Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law. Zimmerman was found not guilty of second-degree murder, but has had numerous run-ins with the law since the trial.

Lastly, after sixteen years on the run, notorious Boston-based mobster Whitey Bulger finally faced charges for murder, racketeering, weapons charges, money laundering, and extortion. Following explosive testimony, some from Whitey’s former criminal affiliates, he was found guilty and sentenced to two consecutive life terms. He is 84 years old.

The world welcomed a new Pope, and England welcomed a new Prince: TIME Magazine named Pope Francis as their 2013 “Person of the Year,” and it fits, since he’s actually pretty likable. Not only has the Argentinian called out the Catholic Church for their poor treatment and intolerance of the gays, women, and the poor- but he’s actually taken strides to set an example as opposed to just talking the talk. Although his views on abortion may be, in my opinion, more than a little old-fashioned, his overall enthusiasm to change and in some ways, to even modernize the Catholic Church, is admirable. Also? He’s technology savvy, which makes for an interesting connection to the Vatican.

In England, my ultimate OTP, William & Kate, welcomed their firstborn son, George Alexander Louis. As expected- the kid is really, really adorable. I think his parents are just one of the cutest couples ever, so this was one of those stories that made me very happy this year.

DextersFinalSeason

The final season of “Dexter” was unwatchable, and “Breaking Bad” delivered the goods: If there was ever a series finale that made an audience feel cheated to the point of rioting- it was the one thrown at the viewers of “Dexter.” In a sloppily written, pointless, plot-less, and overall messy season that focused on new characters that didn’t contribute anything to the story while neglecting to round out established and important characters, the last moments of the series finale were infuriatingly bad. The only consolation I took from Dexter’s final season was that it prepared me for what will undoubtedly be an equally horrific final season of “True Blood” next year.

On the flip side, “Breaking Bad,” one of the greatest TV dramas of all time, had an incredible final season filled with jaw-dropping and nail-biting moments, humor, and a finale that left everyone satisfied. Brilliant writing. Fantastic acting. It was, and will remain, a perfect show. It will be missed!

Hannah Montana couldn’t keep her tongue in her mouth: Deciding to forego what little talent she has as a singer to instead go down the “shock value” route previously paved by artists like Marilyn Manson and more recently, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus was all over the place in 2013. Grinding on Robin Thicke in latex underwear at the VMAs, licking sledgehammers in her “Wrecking Ball” video, smoking pot on stage at the EMAs, taking her clothes off for hack photographer and creep extraordinaire, Terry Richardson, mouthing off to the press, so on and so forth. I’m sort of hoping that all of the media attention Miley received this year satisfies her, her management, and her P.R. team for a while so we don’t have to see so much of her (or her tongue,) in 2014.

ClevelandThree

Three women, missing for a decade, were found in Cleveland: Ten years ago, Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight, all from Cleveland- went missing- seemingly without a trace. After searches and media attention eventually died down, and their disappearances were overshadowed or pushed aside by other news stories in and around the Cleveland area, no one had ever suspected that the women were all still within the city until May 6th when Amanda Berry, with the help of neighbors who had overheard her screaming for help, was rescued with Knight and DeJesus at the home of Ariel Castro- where they had been repeatedly chained, beaten, raped, and psychologically tortured for a decade.

After their rescue, including that of Berry’s six year old daughter fathered by Castro during her captivity, the bizarre and disturbing details of what the women had suffered through came to light- made even more horrifying by how no one, including Castro’s own family- had known what was going on behind closed doors in his home.

Castro was eventually sentenced to life in prison (plus 1,000 years) only to hang himself in his prison cell a month into his sentence. Meanwhile, Berry, Knight, and DeJesus are still recovering from their ordeal.

PaulaDeen2013

Celebrities said some really stupid shit: As it seems to be the case every year, 2013 wasn’t lacking in celebrities saying stupid and/or overly offensive things and subsequently creating outrage and backlash.  Paula Deen saw her endorsement deals slip away this year after it was revealed she’d used the N-word more than once in conversation, and more recently- ‘Duck Dynasty’ patriarch Phil Robertson came under fire for his strong (and insanely misinformed) views on gays, resulting in his temporary suspension from A&E Network and causing a rift between people who agreed with A&E’s decision, and people who didn’t understand how the First Amendment actually works.

The Government shut down: When politicians in Washington failed to come to an agreement about funding for ObamaCare, they did the only mature, reasonable, and logical thing there was to do- and shut down the government for sixteen days- resulting in thousands of federal workers being furloughed and national parks and landmarks being closed to the public until a solution, any solution- could be reached. It was pretty shameful, definitely frustrating, and more than embarrassing to watch both sides of the debate bicker like stubborn children- more so than any other typical day in D.C., that is.

We lost a lot of really good, talented, and interesting figures in 2013: I feel bad leaving people out of an “In Memoriam” section of this post. There were quite a few losses, some under horribly tragic and unexpected circumstances- and all of them sad- in 2013. That included, but certainly wasn’t limited to: Paul Walker, Lou Reed, James Gandolfini, Marcia Wallace, Roger Ebert, Cory Monteith, and Nelson Mandela- among many others.

HonorableMentions2013

Via Google

– HONORABLE MENTIONS –

– Aaron Hernandez (may have) killed someone: Former New England Patriots’ tight end and longtime thug Aaron Hernandez was arrested and charged with the murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, during the Summer of 2013. You know who would have never done something like this? Tim Tebow.

– A meteor flew over, and into, Russia: Thank God for dash-cams, which seem to be a staple in most Russian cars (to document accidents and prevent fraud, FYI,) because some drivers on their morning commute back in February captured the meteor’s semi-terrifying descent before the resulting debris and shock waves injured over 1,500 people.

– Lorde conquered: Perhaps one of the best breakout artists of the year, 17 year old Lorde (real name: Ella) dominated the charts and the radio with tracks from her debut album, “Pure Heroine.” With a voice beyond her years, the infectiously catchy single “Royals” was hard to escape from this year. It was everywhere.

– Rob Ford went batshit crazy: Between denying, then ultimately admitting to smoking crack, being caught on video drunkenly making threats to kill people, and giving some unsolicited info about his sex-life to the press- it’s been an unusual year for Toronto’s mayor. On the plus side, his meltdowns and then quick attempts to save face have been legendary to watch unfold.

– Carlos Danger: Not to be outdone by Rob Ford, former U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner yet again made headlines this year when it was revealed that the married horndog hadn’t learned his lesson when it came to sexting other women. Messages exchanged between multiple women (under the hilariously bad alias “Carlos Danger”) were soon revealed, resulting in more embarrassment for Weiner, who has since kept a low profile.

And there you have it. 2013 – in a nutshell. I’m positive I’ve unintentionally left out and/or overlooked some big stories or moments, but everything I’ve listed is what stands out most to me when I think of this past year.

Moving forward into 2014, I’ve reinstated some of my resolutions that fell to the wayside in all the craziness of 2013:

1. Get back into healthy, tip top shape: I eat well, and I’m as active as I can be given my schedule- but there is always room for improvement. In 2014, I’d like to lose a little more weight, tone up, get my exercise and sleeping patterns under control, and overall just be a more healthy and fit.

2. Go on a cross-country road trip (or visit Ireland!): I had originally wanted to head out on the remnants of Route 66 this year, driving from Chicago to Santa Monica and back- but my workload caused that plan to be postponed. In 2014, I’m hoping I can get around to accomplishing that life-long goal, or, if not- I’d like to at least visit Ireland for a couple of weeks. Fingers are crossed!

3. Brush up on another language: I don’t expect to be 100% fluent in French by this time next year, but I also wouldn’t like to be as rusty as I am (I know the bare minimum and that’s about it.) In 2014, I’m hoping to strengthen my language skills, preferably in French, but also in Spanish, too.

4. Attend San Diego Comic-Con: This is actually a new resolution on my list. I’ve been saying I’ve wanted to do it for years, but have never gotten around to actually committing to it- but in 2014- I want to attend San Diego Comic-Con. If only to say I was there, at least. Will I wear a costume? We’ll just have to wait and see.

5. Write/photograph more: I think I did a good amount of observing this year, both through my camera lens and without it, but in 2014 I’d like to do even more- just to challenge myself. I want to do more urban exploration, pull apart my closet for more fashion-centered posts, go to more shows, etc. I enjoy blogging very much, so I’d like to do it more often.

I’m sure I’ll add others to the list as they come to me.

But I’ve got to end this entry here. NYC awaits! 2013, it has been an absolute pleasure. Thank you for being such a phenomenal year. I hope 2014 is just as good, if not better.

Have a safe and happy new year, everyone! I’ll see you all in 2014!

Thanksgiving20131

Thanksgiving20133

Thanksgiving20134

Thanksgiving20135

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I spent mine at my mom’s house with some of my family, stuffing my face (the serving set-up pictured above) until I could barely move. Afterwards, I was provided with enough leftovers to last me a good week or two, so I don’t think I’ll need to go grocery shopping anytime soon.

I can’t believe we’re heading into December, and that 2013 is almost over! Time really does fly when you’re having fun. November was probably my most laid-back month of the year. I spent a lot of low-key, quality time with friends and family, worked overtime more than once at the firm, and didn’t venture too far from home. I suppose it could be considered the calm before the storm that is the holiday season- with Christmas shopping, traveling to see loved ones and exchange gifts, festive parties, and then preparing for New Years.

I had a couple of ambitious efforts in November, namely my spur-of-the-moment/last minute decision to participate in my first NaNoWriMo. I came nowhere near the set 50,000 word goal due to time constraints and my own poor planning, which was disappointing- but there’s always next year- and I’m determined to be more prepared for it when I try again.

December, as it undoubtedly is for most people, is looking to be a very busy month, and although I’m not a fan of the single digit temperatures or hazards that come with the snowstorms which typically plague Massachusetts this time of year (and for the next few months, God help me,) I am, however- looking forward to Christmas. The music, the decorations, wrapping gifts for friends and family, watching “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” and the “Home Alone” movies, etc. Last year’s Christmas was a bit non-traditional, what with it being the first without my father and everything- so it’ll be nice to recreate some of the holiday magic I’d missed while I was trying to adjust.

I’m ready to get into the Christmas spirit, excited to share my holiday-related adventures, and although I’ll be sad to see it go since it’s been tremendous and pretty amazing so far- I’m hoping to end 2013 with a bang and welcome 2014 with style.

RedSoxWorldSeries2013

First and foremost, a HUGE congratulations to my beloved and bearded Boston Red Sox for their historic World Series Championship win last night. It was such an incredible game to watch, from the Dropkick Murphys singing the national anthem all the way to Koji Uehara’s final pitch of the night, and the post-victory celebrations were even more fun. After everything this city has been through this year, to see everyone in such high spirits as our team dominated Game 6 and seized the title at home, in Fenway, for the first time in 95 years, was powerful. That’s the only way to describe it- powerful. The feeling throughout the city during and after the game was electric, and Boston both needed- and deserved- a night like last night. Boston Strong, indeed. Don’t ever forget it.

I was beyond exhausted at work today, but it was absolutely worth it. I couldn’t think of a better way to close out the month of October. Speaking of, Happy Halloween! (and happy 100th entry in this blog!) We got some light drizzle/rain here tonight, which kept a lot of trick-or-treaters indoors, leaving me with a ton of leftover candy that I’ve been eyeing for the past hour. I foresee some weight gain, or at the very least, a pretty bad stomach ache in my future.

October was a tremendous month (and I’m not just saying that because it’s one of my favorites,) and yes, while most of my adventures were horror/Halloween-oriented, i.e.- The Walking Dead Escape: NYC, Rock N’ Shock, etc.- I did have a few not-so-gory days, too, where I soaked up the beautiful Autumn in New England scenery before the leaves started falling off the trees.

I don’t have any travel plans, and nothing particularly grand scheduled for November (yet,) which means spending more time closer to home, and with Thanksgiving a few weeks away, I’m looking forward to getting back in the kitchen and typing up some recipe posts to share with everyone since it’s been a while. I’ve also been on the fence about whether or not to participate in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month,) although with tomorrow being the 1st and all, I suppose I should make a decision pretty soon.

‘Til then, Oliver and his Halloween sweater bid a fond farewell to October ’13.

Hostel in Ocean Beach, San Diego.

Although I’m still mildly jet-lagged, it was nice to get up this morning and get back to work. A body at rest will stay at rest, and as relaxing as my mini-vacation was, I don’t like staying “at rest” for too long. I go stir crazy. I rather enjoy being productive and getting things done. That sense of productivity and accomplishment seemed to be a reoccurring theme over the course of September. I went into overdrive at the firm, more so than usual- up until the mere hours before I caught my flight out West last week to make sure my workload was either finished, up-to-date, and/or organized. This wasn’t only for my boss and co-worker’s benefit for while I was away- but for myself, as well, for when I got back. It was a rather rewarding feeling when I got into the office today and knew exactly what needed to be done and exactly where everything needed to go. It freed up what I call “clutter time,” which is just minutes or hours wasted on trying to locate things or figure out what needs to get done and when and created more free time for me to focus on other things, instead.

I had mentioned in a recent post while I was in California that October is shaping up to be a very fun, and very busy month. Halloween, which I think may be my favorite holiday, ever- brings a lot of fun events with it. Scary movies, costume parties, cheesy/scary attractions (haunted hay rides, anyone?) horror-themed conventions, the return of “The Walking Dead,” and so much more. I think I’ve been in the Halloween spirit since around April, so needless to say, I’m excited. I have a few themed posts in mind to celebrate, and my camera ready to capture everything.

And I can’t wait to share my costume with everyone.

August2013Leaves

September is right around the corner, but the leaves are already starting to change! Taken in my yard earlier today.

Parting is such sweet sorrow, especially with Summertime in New England. The sunshine. The warm weather. Being able to swim in the ocean without getting frostbite. Knowing that snow and frigid temperatures are on the way yet again, it can get a little depressing to see this Summer leaving us- BUT– there is, of course, my favorite time of year in between now and then- and yes, I really do feel like I say that about every season. Autumn truly is my favorite, though, for lots of reasons. The weather is just right- not too hot, not too cold- and without that pesky pollen that comes with the similar temps in the Springtime. The scenery is gorgeous once the leaves begin turning rich shades or orange, red, and yellow (they’ve already started the process in my yard.) Salted caramel lattes are back in season, as are boots, leggings, and cozy sweaters. Pumpkin patches and apple orchards are open for the picking, and best of all- Halloween- undoubtedly my #1 holiday of the year- is on the way- which means costume planning & designing, and an abundance of horror movies until the season 4 premiere of “The Walking Dead” (October 13th. Don’t forget!)

But first I have to bid adieu to August 2013, a month filled with relaxing lazy days and exciting weekend adventures in the stifling Summer heat. I had originally planned to take a couple of weeks off from work this month to drive cross-country on what’s left of Route 66 to Santa Monica and back, but with recent changes in the office resulting in my current case load being, well, a lot- I’ve had to postpone the trip until a not-yet-determined date that would be more convenient to our clients, my boss, my co-worker, and myself (there’s nothing worse than taking a vacation, coming back to work, and being completely swamped!) I’m not fretting too much, though. I have a couple of mini-trips planned in the coming weeks to hold me over. Route 66 is still very much on my “to-do” list.

August, and really my whole Summer overall, was an amazing time. I met some incredible people, visited some incredible places, saw unbelievable concerts and shows, soaked up some sun and some waves at the beach, and enjoyed my fair share of late nights and sleepy mornings.

I’m excited for the coming cool, crisp days. I’m excited to break out my Fall wardrobe and build a dreamy playlist to match the impending grey and dreary days (which are still beautiful to me.) And I’m excited to share this most lovely and cherished New England season here with everyone who reads this.

I had the pleasure of catching an acoustic set from Frank Turner the other afternoon for Radio BDC at the Boston Globe studios. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my lunch hour. Frank was fantastic (as always) and the whole performance was such a treat. Thanks so much to the good folks over at BDC for the invitation. I really appreciate it!

Well, August has arrived! Just one more month (well, a month and a couple of weeks, if we’re getting technical,) left of Summer- and I’m determined to cram in as many warm-weather activities as I can before Autumn shows up. July was lovely, and for the first time in a long time, the month didn’t seem to fly by so quickly that it made my head spin. Whether it be because of the week-long heatwave we got slammed with here in the Northeast that seemed to briefly melt the space-time continuum, my lazy days in the picturesque White Mountains and Ipswich, or just because I made it a point to force my usually busy self to pump the brakes and really take it all in- July was slow and steady- and I enjoyed every minute of it.

On a more somber note, this past month marked one year since my father passed away, and while the actual day of the anniversary was indeed a sad one with more than a few tears shed, it wasn’t without it’s good moments. I spent most of the day reflecting on my dad’s life- my memories of the time we spent together, his unyielding humor that he carried with him up until the mere minutes before he passed- and all the lessons I learned from him in he 20-something years I was fortunate enough to have him.

It also gave me a chance to really reflect on myself, as well- how I’ve grown and changed and how much stronger I’ve become in his absence. There have been bumps along the way, of course, but I have yet to let them stop me. I do my best to keep my head up and keep moving forward, and I hope wherever my dad is, he’s proud of me and all that I’ve accomplished so far.

August, as I said at the beginning of this post, is crunch-time for end-of-the-Summer fun. I’m in the midst of planning the last days of digging my toes into the sand at the beach, and the last nights of making s’mores by a bonfire- as well as a couple of other adventures.

I’m just hoping August will take it’s time and ease on by slowly the same way July did.

If I could describe June 2013 in one word, it’d definitely be “frenzied”. Work, my cousin’s high school graduation, The Rolling Stones show, attempting to soak up the sun in between running errands and plotting out plans for July, and a Walking Dead-filled day in NYC (I’ll get to that in a few minutes)- I felt like I rarely held still for more than a couple of hours at a time. As much as I like keeping busy and staying active, I’m looking forward to some rest & relaxation in the coming month. I have a couple of weekend getaways planned with friends that I’m excited for. Of course, I’ll have my camera with me (I always do) to capture all the good stuff.

Frenzy aside, I also took a great personal leap forward in June by choosing to share my story about my struggle with panic attacks & Hyperventilation Syndrome, a disorder I’ve been recovering from and that I’d been keeping mostly to myself for close to two years now. I received feedback: on here, on Twitter, and other forms of social networking- and I’m truly touched by the support and kind words. I feel more in control, stronger, and above all else- hopeful- with every day that passes.

To close out the month of June, I headed to NYC yesterday to participate in the Wizard World Comic Convention, which was going on from Friday ’til tonight. For the past few years, I typically attend Rock & Shock, the horror movie convention held in my hometown every October- but I’ve never been to anything quite like this before. The entire Basketball City Facility in the Lower East Side was filled wall to wall with artists, celebrities, vendors, people in elaborate costumes, and fans. I had met up with my friend Ali who was also attending to spend the day checking things out, and apart from the lack of air conditioning in the building, resulting in uncomfortably stifling, sweaty conditions- we had a good time and met a lot of fun, interesting people:

The highlight of the day was by far being able to hang out and goof off with some of the cast of “The Walking Dead”- Norman Reedus (who took my no-holds-barred personality in stride, made me blush something fierce, and completely cracked me up), Michael Rooker (who only encouraged said no-holds-barred personality and who also completely cracked me up), Danai Gurira (MY GIRL-CRUSH), Laurie Holden (breathtakingly beautiful. Absolutely stunning in person), and Chandler Riggs (total sweetheart.)

Despite the heat and what I can only describe as exhaustion, everyone seemed to be in good spirits and didn’t miss an opportunity to crack jokes or answer questions. Such an amazing group of people who made the day an experience I will cherish forever.

“The Walking Dead” cast weren’t the only people we saw: Stan Lee, Patrick Stewart, James Marsters, and the Fonz himself, Henry Winkler- among a few others- were also milling about:

At the end of the day I was a tired, sweat-covered, frizzy-haired mess- but I couldn’t stop smiling. Even now, 24 hours later, I’m just so grateful (and still a little shocked!) for how wonderful the day turned out.

I also scored some cool stuff to take home, including autographs, a special edition of the first “Walking Dead” comic book, and a dress I’ll be showing off in an entry later on this week.:

After grabbing dinner with Ali, I was walking- with a spring in my step- back to where I’d left my car, and I happened to glance up at the Empire State Building. I had to stop and take a photo. I couldn’t think of a better way to cap off the night than with a beautiful display for marriage equality:

May 2013: In a Nutshell.

May2013NYCJust when those of us here in New England were adjusting to Spring finally showing up, we’re thrown into unseasonably scorching temperatures. Less than an hour ago, the heat spiked into 90+ degrees, resulting in me frantically setting up not one, not two, but three different air conditioners around my place so that my pets wouldn’t get sick. I’m currently vegging out in front of one typing this post and it feels awesome. I love Summer, and I don’t mind that it’s here a little earlier than expected. Bring on the bonfires and the beach.

May was filled with rooftop dance parties in Manhattan, breathing in fresh air and discovering some lovely abandoned places to photograph in Western Massachusetts, re-connecting with friends around the state that I haven’t seen in a while, being blown away by the newest “Star Trek” movie (it’s AWESOME- one of the first and best blockbusters of the Summer movie season), and attempting to make plans amid some of the graduations, cook-outs, and parties coming up in June.

May also saw one of my co-workers (and friends) leave our firm to pursue new goals and aspirations, and myself getting acclimated to her not being around the office anymore, which has been sad- since she was fantastic at her job and will sorely be missed- but has also kept me busy with taking on the tasks she usually handled in her position.

Despite the fun I had, May wasn’t without catastrophe for some others. In Oklahoma, a level EF5 tornado (the strongest on the Fujita Scale) all but wiped the town of Moore off the map, killing 24 people, some children, injuring hundreds of others, and causing more than a billion dollars worth of damage. As I’m writing this, another series of severe storms and multiple tornadoes are steamrolling through the state- including Moore again. Although it’s too early to determine what the damages will be when it’s over, it’s clear that the residents of Oklahoma, some of whom are still trying to recover from the last tornado, are going to need help. I urge anyone who is able to donate to please visit the Red Cross website to stay updated on different ways they can donate and contribute to the disaster relief funds set up for situations like this.

And to my friends in the Midwest who are bracing themselves for these storms- please take shelter as advised and stay safe! You’re in my thoughts!

April 2013: In a Nutshell.

April was the month we finally saw Spring prevail over Winter (after taking quite a beating for a few rounds), and with temperatures consistently climbing day by day, I’m hoping it’s here to stay and that we won’t get a freak snowstorm or anything (it’s happened before!) It’s been wonderful being able to wear skirts and dresses without having to layer on leggings or sweaters over and under them.

Sunny days and warm weather aside, April was truly the month that the city of Boston showed the rest of the world exactly why it’s the best. In the wake of a cruel and unfathomable terrorist attack, regular, every day citizens became heroes as they rushed to aid those affected in any way they could (the ONE FUND to date had raised over 20 MILLION dollars!), and tireless authorities and officials made sure they tracked down those responsible in less than a week following the bombing at the Boston Marathon. The city rallied together to show everyone watching that “Boston Strong” was more than just a phrase to help get us through a crisis- but a longstanding and deep-rooted way of life.

There have been so many benefits, charities, fundraisers, raffles, vigils, and other gatherings to support the victims, their families, and the Greater Boston communities, and on Sunday afternoon, I headed down to Lansdowne Street for the sold out “For Boston!” benefit show put together by the Dropkick Murphys. All of the proceeds from ticket sales, merchandise, etc. went directly to helping those affected by the attack, and with performances by Dropkick themselves, State Radio, Big D and The Kids Table, The Parkington Sisters, Old Brigade and Barroom Heroes- all of whom had the most sincere and inspirational words to say about Boston and it’s residents- it turned out to be a really fun, sometimes emotional, but very successful and rewarding day.

Kudos to everyone who participated in the show and for everyone who came down to show their support!

Finally, April ended on a high note. I received some great news at work today (one word: promotion!) and I’m hoping that the luck and good fortune will carry into May as I prepare to attempt some semi-late-in-the-season Spring cleaning, get ready to reboot my diet and fitness regime, and gear up for a little bit of travel and adventure within the coming weeks.

See you all there!
