GlossyBoxDecember20132

As is the usual tradition when it comes to GlossyBox, I received mine near the end of December, and just recently finished playing around with the samples included. After a somewhat anti-climactic year-end Ipsy Bag last month, I was hoping that GlossyBox would make up for it with their holiday-themed box.

What I Received:

ARDENCY INN – “PUNKER” – World’s Baddest Eyeliner (*Full Size!*)

ANATOMICALS “You Need A Blooming Shower” Body Cleanser

NAOBAY Oxygenating Cream Moisturizer

Nails, Inc. “Victoria” Polish (*Full Size!*)

Michael Todd True Organics Pumpkin Nutrient Rich Facial Mask

Product # 1: ARDENCY INN – “PUNKER” – World’s Baddest Eyeliner ($19)

I received a similar marker style eyeliner by Be A Bombshell in an Ipsy bag a couple months ago, and even though I liked the concept, I was concerned about how long the liner would last in terms of not drying out over time since it’s not something that can be sharpened down or easily salvaged.

As far as this product goes- I really did enjoy this liner. The fine point made application incredibly easy, and I was able to go from subtle to dramatic with the flick of my wrist in little to no time at all. It lasts for hours (and hours!) without flaking off or smudging. Case in point: I wore this liner on New Years Eve under my masquerade mask, and even after sweating on the dance floor for hours, and the fabric from my mask rubbing against my face-  including my eye area on more than one occasion- my cat-eye was still flawless when I finally got back to my hotel room.

But again- the question of the marker possibly drying out with daily uncappings/re-cappings comes into question. Although my liner is still fresh, meaning it still has a slightly wet feel to it when I use it- I’m curious how long that will last.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. This liner really is a fantastic quality, but I’m cautious when it comes to the Sharpie-esque texture of this product. $19 is a lot to spend on a black eye liner, so I’d want to be sure I was getting my money’s worth and not wasting cash on something that may not last me more than a few weeks.

Product # 2: ANATOMICALS “You Need A Blooming Shower” Body Cleanser ($9.50)

I love ANATOMICALS’ products- the results I get when I use them, their more than reasonable pricing, and their cute and clever packaging. I was really excited to try this rose-scented (and pink!) body wash, since it smelled absolutely lovely in the neon colored tube. In the shower, this body cleanser lathered up really, really well- and it made my skin feel squeaky clean without drying it out or causing any kind of reaction.

Initially, the scent wasn’t overpowering the way some florals can be- but my only gripe is that it didn’t last long on my skin at all. No sooner had I dried off when it all but disappeared, which was a little disappointing.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. Although the fragrance-fading was a bit of a let-down, I still liked the other aspects of this body wash- especially how nice and clean my skin felt after I used it. I figure that feeling alone could possibly be worth purchasing a full-sized bottle- even if I won’t smell like a bouquet of roses for long.

GlossyBoxDecember20136

Product # 3: NAOBAY Oxygenating Cream Moisturizer ($45)

The first thing I noticed about this lightweight moisturizer is that it smelled like a greenhouse, if that makes any sense. It’s made from plant extracts, which is awesome, but I really hadn’t expected it to remind me of vegetables. As far as hydrating my skin, I’ve been using it for a few days now, and I haven’t noticed any significant difference in how my skin feels or it’s tone and texture. It looks and feels the same as it did before I started using this product. The only thing I like about this particular moisturizer is that it absorbs quickly into my skin, and can act as a makeup primer- but my current foundation already has primer in it- so that’s not necessarily needed.

Would I Purchase?: No. For $45 a bottle, I wasn’t blown away by this moisturizer at all. It was pretty basic, and I’ve tried other creams (for a fraction of the cost) that have given me much better and more noticeable results than this. I’ll pass.

GlossyBoxDecember20137

Product # 4: Nails, Inc. “Victoria” Polish ($9.50)

I have to apologize for how bad my nails look. I’ve decided to take a break from acrylics and gel manicures for a few weeks to give my tips a long overdue and much needed break, and the brittle, damaged ends are in the process of growing out.

I’ve received the “Baker Street” polish from Nails, Inc. in a past GlossyBox, and I loved it. This deep cherry red lacquer was no exception. The formula applies smoothly, dries quickly, and doesn’t chip or smudge easily. The color is beautiful- a perfect dark shade for the Winter- and it lasts a long time.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I received a full-sized bottle in December’s GlossyBox, and it should last me for a very long time, but I really love the color and the formula, so I’d probably re-purchase this one whenever I run out of it.

GlossyBoxDecember20138

Product # 5: Michael Todd True Organics Pumpkin Nutrient Rich Facial Mask ($34)

I wish I had known about this product back when I compiled my “Autumn Essentials” post last year, because it’s the first and only face mask that I’ve ever tried that has smelled like a delicious pumpkin spice latte. This all-natural mask does a bit of everything: it unclogs pores, improves skin’s texture, and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. I applied a generous amount (and amused myself more than I care to admit with how it turned my skin into the color of an Oompa-Loompa’s,) and waited 10-15 minutes before rinsing it off. Immediately, I saw and felt how much smoother my skin was, and noticed that it had a bit of a glow to it. I can’t say much about whether or not it drastically unclogged my pores with just a couple of uses so far, but I’m hoping to see more definitive results in the coming weeks.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I think this was my favorite product in December’s GlossyBox. I loved this mask, and I would absolutely purchase a full-sized bottle. The results were great, it smells amazing, and it’s loaded with all natural ingredients that are actually good for my skin. I’m sold.

Much like Ipsy’s year-end bag, I wasn’t completely blown away with December’s GlossyBox. It wasn’t horrible by any means, but nothing- with the exception of the pumpkin mask- really impressed me. I’m hoping with a new year, both subscription services come up with some new, innovative ideas to really make their boxes/bags stand out among their competitors.

Happy New Year, everyone! I’ve arrived home from a wonderful night (and day) in New York City and I’m only a little tired. Just a little. I hope everyone had an incredible time counting down the seconds to 2014 wherever you were last night. For the second year in a row, I welcomed a new year within the McKittrick Hotel with good friends and very fun strangers- dancing, singing, checking out some live jazz acts and lounge singers, wandering the hotel, and drinking champagne well after midnight and into the early, early hours of the morning until my feet were sore and my eyes were starting to droop.

I didn’t want to carry around my purse and my camera all night, since it can get pretty heavy after a while, so the photos of the party I’ve posted above were taken at random intervals during the night with my phone. Sorry if they’re a little blurry- everyone was moving around so fast- including me!

This year’s party theme was “The King’s Winter Masquerade,” and required black & white attire- as well as a mask. For my dress, I turned to trusty ModCloth. I found, and fell in love with, the black dress shown above, which had a comfortable, flattering cut, white lace trim along the bottom hem, and strategically placed cut-outs that showed just the right amount of skin to be flirtatious without going overboard. I paired the dress with black thermal tights since it was pretty cold out last night, and black & white Oxford-styled pumps by Poetic License. The shoes gave me a little bit of height without hindering my ability to dance for hours, and held up well when I went searching for a cab after I’d left the party.

The mask came from Pier 1 Imports, and was the piece that pulled my whole ensemble together. It was beautiful, elaborate, fancy- and I received a ton of compliments on it throughout the night. It didn’t fall off or fall apart- and I look forward to using it for a future Halloween party (or any occasion that pops up.) It’s gorgeous.

When it came time to rest and recharge after the festivities, I retreated to my room at the ink48 Hotel, which is hands down one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed at while in NYC. My friends and I were given a corner room on the top floor which provided two breathtaking views from the floor-to-ceiling windows. On one side, we had a brilliant view of The Empire State Building and Times Square (perfect for New Years Eve!) and the other was a crystal clear overlook of the docks down by the Hudson River. See that aircraft carrier in the last photo? That’s the Intrepid- where Sean and I participated in “The Walking Dead: Escape” last October! I hadn’t realized it was right there until this morning when I was looking outside and spotted it in the sunlight.

The hotel’s toiletries were also provided by C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries, which was a huge hit for me- and the staff were so unbelievably friendly and helpful (they brought me a bottle of contact lens solution directly to the room at 4 a.m. when I’d realized I forgot to pack some in my bag and asked the front desk where the closest drug store was so I could go purchase one!) If you’re looking for a great place to stay while in NYC- this is it. Definitely my new favorite.

Before we headed back to Boston, we grabbed breakfast at Market Diner down the block from the hotel on 11th Ave, which was probably the best meal to start a new year with. The food was delicious (as always, I stuffed my face with a Greek omelette), filling, and reasonably priced- which was a lot better than the meal we’d had at Ristorante Amarone on 9th Ave last night before heading over to the McKittrick. That’s not to say the food wasn’t good- it was okay– but it wasn’t anything extraordinary- and it was kind if overpriced for the quality. Oh well.

Overall, last night was the perfect, fun way to bid adieu to 2013, and today was a beautiful, relaxing day to usher in 2014. I had such a lovely time.

2013: In a Nutshell.

Leave a comment Standard

I can’t believe that 2013 is coming to a close and 2014 is mere hours away. Much like last year, I’ll be spending New Years Eve dancing and drinking champagne with good friends all night long at the McKittrick Hotel in New York City. We’re forgoing catching a performance of “Sleep No More” and the pre-production dinner that’s offered to instead gallivant around Manhattan for a few hours before we go straight to the party- the theme requiring black & white attire and a masquerade ball style mask- to countdown to midnight. I’m very excited.

People often say that “time flies when you’re having fun,” and I think that statement has never been more appropriate to use than right now when describing the whirlwind of fun, adventure, accomplishments, personal growth & success, and wonderful memories I’ve made and experienced over these past twelve months- which were drastically needed after the loss of my father in 2012.

2013 was indeed my first “real” year without my dad here to share milestones with me: my birthday, a big promotion at my job, my travels and tales from the road, Father’s Day, re-connecting with my older brothers and members of our family I hadn’t seen or spoken to in years, and so many more. But whenever I started to feel sad, I thankfully had good friends and family to surround me and support me and remind me that he was very much there for everything- every moment- in spirit. Keeping his memory alive by being the best that I could be and doing the best that I could in everything I did this year helped fill the void that his absence had left in my life and in my heart. I miss him tremendously, but I think I’ve found a sense of peace.

Indeed, 2013 was the year I pulled myself up, as difficult as it was at times, and dove headfirst back into the world to live and savor each day to the fullest. I traveled- sometimes on my own just for the hell of it- I tried new things, and I met so many new people who have quickly become beloved friends. I also launched this blog on January 1st of 2013, and as a result- I’ve reached an audience of incredible people and have had wonderful interactions with so many individuals from all walks of life who follow and read my posts. I was welcomed with warm and open arms into the Boston Blogger community, and I’m so beyond grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and the doors that have opened from “Legally Redhead,” and for every single one of you who continue to support it.

From celebrating Dropkick Murphys’ latest album with the band at McGreevy’s in January, getting snowed in following the “Nemo” Nor’easter, seeing the Rolling Stones live in concert, getting the chance to meet and talk to fun, down-to-Earth celebrities like Chris Hardwick, Henry Winkler, Joey Fatone, a bunch of the cast from “The Walking Dead,” and most recently- Joe Manganiello- to taking day-trips and spending weekends in NYC, the White Mountains, and Southern California, or just doing some urban exploration and discovering fascinating places right here in and around New England.

From learning how to do the Charleston at a “Great Gatsby” themed party at a beautiful estate in Ipswich, to learning something more serious, i.e. how to control and ultimately overcome my panic attacks and Hyperventilation Syndrome. From getting my full-blown geek on at Wizard World NYC all the way to Boston Comic-Con. From looking like a very scary zombie in “The Walking Dead: Escape,” to feeling like a very scary zombie after cheering myself hoarse and into exhaustion following the Red Sox Rally after their World Series win. From all of those events- and everything in between- all the way ’til now as I’m getting ready to head into NYC- 2013 was one of the most eventful, one of the most fun, and overall, truly one of the best years I think I’ve ever had.

Here are just some of the newsworthy events, pop culture moments, and usually strange phenomenons that happened this year:

BostonMagazineMay2013

Boston Magazine’s May 2013 Cover following the tragedy.

The Boston Marathon Bombings: I think in terms of major events in 2013, especially since it hit so close to home, the April 15th bombings at the Boston Marathon comes to mind almost immediately. I, like many others, remember exactly what I was doing that beautiful, sunny afternoon when I first heard about the explosions near the finish line. I remember the panic as phone lines went down as I tried to contact my friends and loved ones, and they tried to contact me, as we all tried to make sure we were okay. I remember everyone taking to social media to provide updates to those outside city lines as all of Boston went into lock down following a shoot-out between the two terrorist brothers responsible for the bombings and police officers in Watertown, and I remember the sense of relief, and even joy in some ways- when one of the two brothers was killed and the other was finally found- alive- and taken into custody.

But more importantly- I remember the unbelievable display of bravery and heroism as police, paramedics, runners in the marathon, and bystanders- ran towards the danger following the explosions to try and help in any way they could. I remember the overwhelming response to The One Fund, which was established to help the families of those killed in the attacks and provide aid to the 250+ people who were seriously injured. I remember the emotional rendition of the National Anthem at T.D. Garden just two days after the attack where the crowd took over for Rene Rancourt and sang loud and proud. I remember the city of Boston banding together to support and care for each other during some of our darkest and uncertain days, and the sense of camaraderie through inspiring and hopeful moments throughout the year as we moved forward without fear- showing the rest of the country, and the rest of the world, what being “Boston Strong” is all about.

The NSA is watching us. ALL OF US: Men and women everywhere briefly second-guessed sending selfies or sexting when it was revealed that the National Security Agency had been monitoring millions upon millions of phone calls, messages, e-mails, and data collected without warrants from Americans, as well as allies to the country- sparking resentment and protest from citizens who felt their right to privacy was not only invaded, but disregarded all together. The leak of the NSA’s controversial surveillance tactics came from Edward Snowden, a former contractor to the NSA who went from relatively unknown to international fugitive in a matter of weeks until being granted temporary asylum in Russia. While some thought Snowden was nothing more than a criminal, many seemed to support his efforts to expose and inform the world of the National Security Agency’s spying operations.

Since the fall-out, there has been heated debate as to whether or not the NSA’s surveillance is a direct violation of the Fourth Amendment. Representatives for the NSA have stated that any monitoring is strictly for defense purposes, i.e.- to thwart any possible terrorist threats.

Jodi Arias, George Zimmerman, and Whitey Bulger: 2013 saw three high profile trials come to explosive conclusions. First was Jodi Arias, who after weeks of gruesome and often scandalous testimony, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the brutal killing of her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander. Jodi is currently awaiting a decision to determine whether or not she’ll receive the death penalty.

Then there was George Zimmerman, whose shooting and killing of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin as he walked back to his father’s home from a convenience store sparked widespread debate over racial profiling and Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law. Zimmerman was found not guilty of second-degree murder, but has had numerous run-ins with the law since the trial.

Lastly, after sixteen years on the run, notorious Boston-based mobster Whitey Bulger finally faced charges for murder, racketeering, weapons charges, money laundering, and extortion. Following explosive testimony, some from Whitey’s former criminal affiliates, he was found guilty and sentenced to two consecutive life terms. He is 84 years old.

The world welcomed a new Pope, and England welcomed a new Prince: TIME Magazine named Pope Francis as their 2013 “Person of the Year,” and it fits, since he’s actually pretty likable. Not only has the Argentinian called out the Catholic Church for their poor treatment and intolerance of the gays, women, and the poor- but he’s actually taken strides to set an example as opposed to just talking the talk. Although his views on abortion may be, in my opinion, more than a little old-fashioned, his overall enthusiasm to change and in some ways, to even modernize the Catholic Church, is admirable. Also? He’s technology savvy, which makes for an interesting connection to the Vatican.

In England, my ultimate OTP, William & Kate, welcomed their firstborn son, George Alexander Louis. As expected- the kid is really, really adorable. I think his parents are just one of the cutest couples ever, so this was one of those stories that made me very happy this year.

DextersFinalSeason

BreakingBadFinalSeason

The final season of “Dexter” was unwatchable, and “Breaking Bad” delivered the goods: If there was ever a series finale that made an audience feel cheated to the point of rioting- it was the one thrown at the viewers of “Dexter.” In a sloppily written, pointless, plot-less, and overall messy season that focused on new characters that didn’t contribute anything to the story while neglecting to round out established and important characters, the last moments of the series finale were infuriatingly bad. The only consolation I took from Dexter’s final season was that it prepared me for what will undoubtedly be an equally horrific final season of “True Blood” next year.

On the flip side, “Breaking Bad,” one of the greatest TV dramas of all time, had an incredible final season filled with jaw-dropping and nail-biting moments, humor, and a finale that left everyone satisfied. Brilliant writing. Fantastic acting. It was, and will remain, a perfect show. It will be missed!

Hannah Montana couldn’t keep her tongue in her mouth: Deciding to forego what little talent she has as a singer to instead go down the “shock value” route previously paved by artists like Marilyn Manson and more recently, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus was all over the place in 2013. Grinding on Robin Thicke in latex underwear at the VMAs, licking sledgehammers in her “Wrecking Ball” video, smoking pot on stage at the EMAs, taking her clothes off for hack photographer and creep extraordinaire, Terry Richardson, mouthing off to the press, so on and so forth. I’m sort of hoping that all of the media attention Miley received this year satisfies her, her management, and her P.R. team for a while so we don’t have to see so much of her (or her tongue,) in 2014.

ClevelandThree

Via ABC News

Three women, missing for a decade, were found in Cleveland: Ten years ago, Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight, all from Cleveland- went missing- seemingly without a trace. After searches and media attention eventually died down, and their disappearances were overshadowed or pushed aside by other news stories in and around the Cleveland area, no one had ever suspected that the women were all still within the city until May 6th when Amanda Berry, with the help of neighbors who had overheard her screaming for help, was rescued with Knight and DeJesus at the home of Ariel Castro- where they had been repeatedly chained, beaten, raped, and psychologically tortured for a decade.

After their rescue, including that of Berry’s six year old daughter fathered by Castro during her captivity, the bizarre and disturbing details of what the women had suffered through came to light- made even more horrifying by how no one, including Castro’s own family- had known what was going on behind closed doors in his home.

Castro was eventually sentenced to life in prison (plus 1,000 years) only to hang himself in his prison cell a month into his sentence. Meanwhile, Berry, Knight, and DeJesus are still recovering from their ordeal.

Celebrities said some really stupid shit: As it seems to be the case every year, 2013 wasn’t lacking in celebrities saying stupid and/or overly offensive things and subsequently creating outrage and backlash.  Paula Deen saw her endorsement deals slip away this year after it was revealed she’d used the N-word more than once in conversation, and more recently- ‘Duck Dynasty’ patriarch Phil Robertson came under fire for his strong (and insanely misinformed) views on gays, resulting in his temporary suspension from A&E Network and causing a rift between people who agreed with A&E’s decision, and people who didn’t understand how the First Amendment actually works.

The Government shut down: When politicians in Washington failed to come to an agreement about funding for ObamaCare, they did the only mature, reasonable, and logical thing there was to do- and shut down the government for sixteen days- resulting in thousands of federal workers being furloughed and national parks and landmarks being closed to the public until a solution, any solution- could be reached. It was pretty shameful, definitely frustrating, and more than embarrassing to watch both sides of the debate bicker like stubborn children- more so than any other typical day in D.C., that is.

We lost a lot of really good, talented, and interesting figures in 2013: I feel bad leaving people out of an “In Memoriam” section of this post. There were quite a few losses, some under horribly tragic and unexpected circumstances- and all of them sad- in 2013. That included, but certainly wasn’t limited to: Paul Walker, Lou Reed, James Gandolfini, Marcia Wallace, Roger Ebert, Cory Monteith, and Nelson Mandela- among many others.

HonorableMentions2013

Via Google

– HONORABLE MENTIONS –

– Aaron Hernandez (may have) killed someone: Former New England Patriots’ tight end and longtime thug Aaron Hernandez was arrested and charged with the murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, during the Summer of 2013. You know who would have never done something like this? Tim Tebow.

– A meteor flew over, and into, Russia: Thank God for dash-cams, which seem to be a staple in most Russian cars (to document accidents and prevent fraud, FYI,) because some drivers on their morning commute back in February captured the meteor’s semi-terrifying descent before the resulting debris and shock waves injured over 1,500 people.

– Lorde conquered: Perhaps one of the best breakout artists of the year, 17 year old Lorde (real name: Ella) dominated the charts and the radio with tracks from her debut album, “Pure Heroine.” With a voice beyond her years, the infectiously catchy single “Royals” was hard to escape from this year. It was everywhere.

– Rob Ford went batshit crazy: Between denying, then ultimately admitting to smoking crack, being caught on video drunkenly making threats to kill people, and giving some unsolicited info about his sex-life to the press- it’s been an unusual year for Toronto’s mayor. On the plus side, his meltdowns and then quick attempts to save face have been legendary to watch unfold.

– Carlos Danger: Not to be outdone by Rob Ford, former U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner yet again made headlines this year when it was revealed that the married horndog hadn’t learned his lesson when it came to sexting other women. Messages exchanged between multiple women (under the hilariously bad alias “Carlos Danger”) were soon revealed, resulting in more embarrassment for Weiner, who has since kept a low profile.

And there you have it. 2013 – in a nutshell. I’m positive I’ve unintentionally left out and/or overlooked some big stories or moments, but everything I’ve listed is what stands out most to me when I think of this past year.

Moving forward into 2014, I’ve reinstated some of my resolutions that fell to the wayside in all the craziness of 2013:

1. Get back into healthy, tip top shape: I eat well, and I’m as active as I can be given my schedule- but there is always room for improvement. In 2014, I’d like to lose a little more weight, tone up, get my exercise and sleeping patterns under control, and overall just be a more healthy and fit.

2. Go on a cross-country road trip (or visit Ireland!): I had originally wanted to head out on the remnants of Route 66 this year, driving from Chicago to Santa Monica and back- but my workload caused that plan to be postponed. In 2014, I’m hoping I can get around to accomplishing that life-long goal, or, if not- I’d like to at least visit Ireland for a couple of weeks. Fingers are crossed!

3. Brush up on another language: I don’t expect to be 100% fluent in French by this time next year, but I also wouldn’t like to be as rusty as I am (I know the bare minimum and that’s about it.) In 2014, I’m hoping to strengthen my language skills, preferably in French, but also in Spanish, too.

4. Attend San Diego Comic-Con: This is actually a new resolution on my list. I’ve been saying I’ve wanted to do it for years, but have never gotten around to actually committing to it- but in 2014- I want to attend San Diego Comic-Con. If only to say I was there, at least. Will I wear a costume? We’ll just have to wait and see.

5. Write/photograph more: I think I did a good amount of observing this year, both through my camera lens and without it, but in 2014 I’d like to do even more- just to challenge myself. I want to do more urban exploration, pull apart my closet for more fashion-centered posts, go to more shows, etc. I enjoy blogging very much, so I’d like to do it more often.

I’m sure I’ll add others to the list as they come to me.

But I’ve got to end this entry here. NYC awaits! 2013, it has been an absolute pleasure. Thank you for being such a phenomenal year. I hope 2014 is just as good, if not better.

Have a safe and happy new year, everyone! I’ll see you all in 2014!

Top 10 Photographs of 2013.

Leave a comment Standard

In between visiting with family and friends during the holidays, working, and preparing for New Years- I’ve been drafting my “2013: In a Nutshell” post in my free time. For those who may not know, at the end of every month, I like to summarize said month, talk about any major events/turning points that took place, post any pictures that may not have initially made the cut when I blogged, write about the days to come, etc. My 2013 summary is a lot like that- but for the entire year, of course- including an assortment of news, pop culture, random tidbits and nonsense, etc.

I digress, to prepare- I’ve re-visited some of the photographs I snapped during 2013 (and there were a lot!) and wanted to create a post highlighting my Top 10 of the year and the stories behind them.

So without further ado,

BestOf201310

# 10: Dropkick Murphys, TD Garden (March 15th)

I took a shot of the heavily illuminated stage- and an enthusiastic fan- during the band’s annual series of Saint Patrick’s Day shows in March. The timing of this shot couldn’t have been any better, thanks in part to the guy in front of me who threw his arms up as I was snapping away while the band prepared to launch into a cover of AC/DC’s “TNT.”

This wasn’t my first Dropkick Murphys show of 2013, and it also wouldn’t be my last. I’d go on to see them perform a couple more times over the next few months- one concert in particular being especially poignant as it was a benefit for “The One Fund” to help those directly affected in the Boston Marathon Bombing.

BestOf201319

# 9: Ocean Beach, San Diego (September 27th)

This may not be the most complex photograph I’ve ever taken (I took it sitting down in the sand, after all,) but it’s one of my favorites from the year because it was taken during one of the most relaxing afternoons during one of my most relaxing vacations in recent memory. I was sitting in a small sliver of shade underneath the pier at Ocean Beach waiting for my friend Duncan to arrive while I listened to music and watched the surfers paddle out as the waves crashed in.

I could have stayed like that for hours. It was truly a little piece of paradise.

BestOf201318

# 8: Red Velvet Cupcakes with Salted Caramel Frosting (January 22nd)

If there was ever a photograph I wanted to eat, the above shot of surprise cupcakes, a combination of two of my favorite flavors, that my family concocted and made for my birthday would be it. This picture apparently received a lot of attention on Pinterest among foodies and dessert-enthusiasts, which is pretty cool- but I especially liked it because it was a (delicious) reminder of how wonderful my relatives are and the effort they put into giving me a fun (and again, delicious,) surprise.

BestOf201317

# 7: Photobombing Norman Reedus in NYC (June 29th)

I can’t take credit for this photo, since I simply posed and a woman at Wizard World NYC caught the moment with her camera- but it’s still one of the best pictures I have from the event, and the year- although definitely not the most flattering. Norman Reedus, of “The Walking Dead” and “Boondock Saints” fame, is also a notorious photobomber. Having seen countless photos of fans simply standing beside him and looking timid or giddy, I decided to liven things up.

I gave Norman a heads up when we got ready to pose in front of the hilariously awkward K-Mart style backdrop, and he was an incredibly good sport and enthusiastic participant to the shenanigans. He’s a genuinely cool guy.

# 6: Mick Jagger, TD Garden (June 14th)

Winning Rolling Stones tickets was a dream come true that I’m still pinching myself about since I can’t believe it actually happened. To be able to see the man, the myth, the legend- Mick Jagger- sashay, dance, and kick his way around the stage- performing all the songs I grew up with and love so, so much- was beyond surreal. I took this shot in between cheering myself hoarse and singing along at the top of my lungs- and it’s an incredible memento to have in my collection of concert pictures from throughout the years.

# 5: Autumn Shade, Winsor Dam (October 5th)

During one of my countless weekend drives, I had stopped in Western Massachusetts to take in the fresh air and beautiful fall foliage. It was during a long walk over the Winsor Dam in Ware/Belchertown when I saw the sun shining through this tree, in the midst of the transition from Summer to Fall- hanging over and shedding it’s leaves onto an unoccupied picnic table. I grabbed my camera, and the result is something I am really quite pleased with.

# 4: Great Gatsby Lawn Party at the Crane Estate (July 21st)

This is another photo I didn’t take myself (Sean helped!) but I loved it, even if it’s considered a “selfie.” We had considered taking this picture in black & white or sepia, to give it a more authentic “old time” feel, but in the end I’m glad we decided to keep the photo in it’s full color. The bright red of my hair and lipstick pales in comparison to the Crane Estate, surrounded by other attendees and the greenest grass I’d ever seen, looming in the background.

It was a beautiful party, and I’m glad I have this photo to remember it by.

# 3: Cliff Walk, Newport (December 22nd)

This is one of the most recent photographs I’ve taken (from a day trip this past Sunday,) but it’s one of the most beautiful, in my opinion. The ocean has always been a place of refuge for me. It can be calming or exciting, perfect to sit and watch in any mood or mind set. On this particular day, it was wild- with waves crashing against the rocks while I strolled Cliff Walk. I took this photo of the water breaking against and inside a small cave within the cliff while some of the Newport Mansions are peeking through the fog in the background.

# 2: The Day After, Boston (April 20th)

At a glance, this photo isn’t anything extraordinary- there’s probably hundreds out there just like this- but to me- the date it was taken and the frame of mind myself and many others were in is what makes this photo so important to me. Shot hours after Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the two Boston Marathon Bombers, was taken into custody- I snapped this photo by the reflecting pool while heading out to brunch with a friend. The sun was shining, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, and everyone I saw or spoke to that day seemed to be in good spirits.

The city of Boston has never looked more beautiful to me than it did that day, and in this photograph.

# 1: Medfield State Hospital (January 26th)

And finally, my favorite photograph. Something I captured that I am still, and will remain, very fond of. Taken on one of the coldest days of the year at the abandoned Medfield State Hospital, I was rounding one of the wards when I spotted this dilapidated bench with a tree growing through it. Although I am very pleased with every shot I took that day- this one is my favorite. I know there’s a metaphor in it somewhere, like “life continues through destruction and decay,” or something poetic like that- but I just thought this picture was neat. The snow, the boarded up building in the background, the fence. Every part of it.

I hope to go back someday in warmer weather and see the tree in bloom- still growing through the bench.

And there they are, my top 10 photographs from 2013. It was a hard decision to make, limiting all of my pictures I took down to just ten- but I think it’s a good compilation. All of the photos posted have fun or meaningfulness to them.

I hope to be even more of a shutterbug in 2014 (and who knows- maybe double my list to a “top 20” this time next year?)

I’ve been having a lot of fun experimenting with the products and samples I’ve received from Ipsy over the past few months. I’ve discovered some great brands and cosmetics that have worked really well for me, and also learned which ones don’t work as well, too. For $10 a month, I’m almost always satisfied and impressed with what I receive. Consider me a happy customer.

I was pretty excited to see how Ipsy would close out 2013, what with it being the holidays and New Years, so when I received my red-lined, black patent bag loaded with goodies meant to go along with the theme “Celebration,” I couldn’t wait to dive right in.

What I Received:

NYX Extra Creamy Round Lipstick in “Iced Honey” (*FULL SIZE*)

Be a Bombshell –  The One Stick in “Girl Crush” (*FULL SIZE*)

POP Beauty Bright Up Your Life Eye Shadow Trio in “Smokin’ Hot”

Ardell Natural Lash False Eyelashes

Nicka K New York Nail Color in “Classic Taupe” (*FULL SIZE*)

Product # 1: NYX Extra Creamy Round Lipstick in “Iced Honey” ($4)

Okay, first things first. I am absolutely in love with the color and consistency of this lipstick. This pinkish/gold hue applied like a dream- softly and smoothly. It felt wonderful on my lips and gave them a beautiful shine that would look gorgeous in the Spring or Summer. The problem with this particular formula, however, is that while it’s described as being smudge-proof and long-lasting, it vanished from my lips within twenty minutes, tops. There is absolutely NO longevity to this lipstick at all, which is really disappointing and echos a similar issue I had with the sample of em Cosmetics lipstick I received in November’s Ipsy bag that had no staying power whatsoever. I want something I won’t have to continually reapply every half hour throughout the day. This lipstick isn’t it.

Would I Purchase?: No. I’m sure I’ll be on the lookout for this color in another formula or from another brand that’ll last me a little longer, since it really is a beautiful shade- but count me out on this collection. It was a let down.

Product # 2: Be a Bombshell –  The One Stick in “Girl Crush” ($16)

I’m weary of 3-in-1 sticks, mainly because 2 out of the 3 ways they can be used suck. Example- a 3-in-1 stick looks amazing on your cheeks, but it makes your eyes look like you have a contagious medical condition or dries your lips out, or a 3-in-1 stick does wonders for your lips- but flakes on your eyelids and barely shows on your cheeks, etc.

Even still, I tried this iridescent and shimmery light pink stick on all three areas: cheeks, lips, and eyes. It barely showed on my cheeks, only succeeding in giving them a bit of a sparkle under certain lighting. It wasn’t much better on my eyes, where the pink was only slightly visible and had faded by mid-afternoon. On my lips, the color showed up a lot more by comparison, and didn’t dry my lips out like I feared it would, but much like the NYX lipstick included in this month’s bag, it didn’t last long before it had smudged and disappeared.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. There’s still hope for this product yet, because while it didn’t give me a flush of color the way I’d hoped, I think it’d still made a decent highlighter for cheek and brow bones on the days where I want a “no makeup/more natural” look.

Product # 3: POP Beauty Bright Up Your Life Eye Shadow Trio in “Smokin’ Hot” ($24)

This beautiful trio of eyeshadows- a shimmery cream, metallic silver, and black with a hint of sparkle- arrived just in time for me to play around with for the holidays, specifically New Years, where I think it will compliment my planned ensemble rather nicely. I applied this trio after my primer, and the shadow stayed vibrant and more importantly- in place- all day at work and into the night at the office Christmas party without flaking, smudging, or creasing. I love the way it brings out the blue in my eyes, and I think it’s going to be my go-to whenever I want to create a classic smokey eye.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I loved these colors. I loved how easy they applied- and most of all- I loved how long they lasted. These shades are only three of a full-sized palette, which also includes a beautiful purple and green- among others. Consider me smitten.

IpsyBagDecember201310

Product # 4: Ardell Natural Lash False Eyelashes ($3.99)

For someone who loves the look of false eyelashes as much as I do, I was hoping to enjoy these more. While these falsies applied easily enough and with no mess, which is always a good thing, they felt heavy along my lash line to the point where I had to peel them off because they were too uncomfortable, which turned out to be easy since they had already started to lift up, anyway. While the price point is definitely nice, the quality of these lashes isn’t.

Would I Purchase? No. I’ll stick to my volumizing and lengthening mascaras for dark, dramatic lashes. These falsies were cheap (not just in the price,) and flimsy.

IpsyBagDecember201311

IpsyBagDecember201312

Product # 5: Nicka K New York Nail Color in “Classic Taupe” ($4.99)

I wasn’t entirely sold on the color of this nail polish when I first saw it in it’s bottle. It looked a bit murky to me, but even still, I wanted to review it. That nearly became impossible when upon going to apply the lacquer for the first time, the brush broke off INSIDE THE BOTTLE. Luckily, I had a clean spare to use. Unluckily, the consistency of this product was so thick and goopy that the spare brush was rendered useless in no time. Even after letting my nails dry for fifteen minutes, they still smudged and peeled with everything I touched.

Would I Purchase?: No. This nail polish is cheap. It’s poorly made, has no quick-drying or long-lasting qualities, and the color is just as murky looking on my nails as it was in the bottle. I’ll pass on this one.

So one product I loved and four others I didn’t like at all or didn’t particularly care for. I had hoped December’s Ipsy Bag would go above and beyond in terms of the quality of products- but nothing in this month’s bag- sans the eye shadow trio- impressed me at all. Overall, I was pretty disappointed.

Oh well. There’s always 2014 for Ipsy to “wow” and dazzle me.

Yesterday, on a bit of a whim, I headed down to Newport, Rhode Island with Troy to spend a day relaxing with no real itinerary in mind, and taking in the scenery. I had visited around Christmastime a couple of years ago and it was breathtakingly beautiful. Last night was no exception, made even more lovely by how unseasonably warm outside it was. At one point, I had shed my winter jacket and was comfortably walking around downtown in just a cashmere sweater- admiring the Christmas lights, the mansions, and window-shopping.

During a stroll on Cliff Walk, after stumbling upon a poor dead dolphin that had been washed up against the rocks (seriously- talk about a bizarre find,) Troy and I ran into a very nice woman visiting from Russia who took a couple of the above photos of the two of us together after she talked about the comparisons between the architecture of some of the mansions along the coast to that of buildings from where she’d grown up, and despite the fact that I pulled ridiculous faces in most of them, I’m grateful she was able to capture a couple of good shots with such an amazing view in the background.

Between the warm weather, the scenery, and the really good company- I think it was just what I needed to help me unwind before the Christmas Eve/Christmas Day rush where I’m (usually) left scrambling to visit family & friends and drop off gifts within a certain amount of time. I can easily see Newport becoming an annual holiday tradition.

And, of course, I couldn’t just end this post without wishing a very Merry Christmas to all of you reading this. I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday!

My Holiday Essentials.

MyHolidayEssentials2013Logo

Every season, I try to do an “essentials” post of the things/products that are getting me through the changing weather, temperatures, travels and seasonal activities. With snow falling heavily as I write this, and having attempted on more than one occasion to get some Christmas shopping done over the past couple of weeks (side note: nearly finished!) I thought that I’d forgo a “Winter Essentials” post and create a more festive one, instead.

Here are the things that are currently getting me into the holiday spirit:

MyHolidayEssentials20131

1. Anything Gingerbread or Peppermint Scented: In November’s Sephora Holiday Haul, I had picked up two body washes from Philosophy – one in “Spiced Gingerbread Cookie,” and the other in “Peppermint Stick.” Those were just scratching at the surface of what I consider to be my two biggest scent-obsessions this time of year. Also included in my collection are the above-pictured products from Bath & Body Works. From left to right:

“Iced Gingerbread Antibacterial Hand Soap,” which I keep in the bathroom for guests and myself since it smells delicious.

“Twisted Peppermint Hand Cream.” This one stays in my purse. It’s a refreshing burst of mint fragrance that keeps my hands nice and moisturized without making them feel greasy.

“Iced Gingerbread Foaming Hand Sanitizer.” Another purse-product. This foam is pretty strong in terms of the scent, but it’s not harsh on hands the way other liquid/gel sanitizers can be. It absorbs quickly without drying my skin out.

Each time I get a whiff of any of these products, I feel especially cheery.

MyHolidayEssentials20132

2. Thermal Pajamas: There is nothing more comfortable than rocking a pair of thermal pajamas and fuzzy socks while wrapping Christmas presents and listening to some Bing Crosby and Perry Como holiday classics, or watching “Home Alone” or “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” The ones I’m wearing in the photo above, a long sleeve shirt and matching leggings combination, were a splurge from Victoria’s Secret, and worth every penny. They keep me warm and cozy, and I’m looking into buying another set (or two) really soon.

MyHolidayEssentials20133

MyHolidayEssentials20134

3. Peppermint Hot Chocolate: I’ve drastically cut back on my caffeine intake as of late (and by “cut back,” I mean I haven’t had any coffee at all in weeks,) which means my beloved peppermint mocha lattes at Starbucks are off limits. I’ve found solace in peppermint hot chocolate, however- which gives me the same great taste without the jitters. Starbucks will always be my favorite go-to for this drink (it’s served at the perfect temperature, and with those little dark chocolate curls they sprinkle in!) but making it at home is easier, less costly, and still tastes just as good.

I make my own in one of two ways- by either melting an actual peppermint stick in scalding hot cocoa and letting it cool before I enjoy it, or, if I’m in a rush to drink it- adding a splash of peppermint-flavored creamer to it to give it a minty kick. Sadly, I do not have those delicious dark chocolate curls- but I find crumbling a York Peppermint Pattie or an Andes Mint on top works just fine.

MyHolidayEssentials20135

4. A Festive Sweater: While ugly Christmas sweaters are pretty fun, sometimes it’s nice to just have a festive one- with no bells, fringe, sequins, or poof balls glued or sewn onto it- to wear around the house or to holiday gatherings without having to don a Santa hat to look Christmas-y. Enter this oversized “Home Alone” inspired sweater from BooHoo.com (special thanks to Imogen for showing me where to buy it!) that I plan on rocking to the office Christmas party later on this week. I’ve paired it with a basic black skirt and black tights in the photo above, and it matches my annual holiday manicure perfectly. Speaking of, this year’s nail art is snowflake inspired:

MyHolidayEssentials20136

“Holiday Essentials” not pictured: Sugar cookie eggnog, evening drives to look at Christmas lights/decorations, making individual and unique Christmas cards for friends and loved ones, sporadically tuning in to the 24-hour marathon of “A Christmas Story” throughout Christmas Day and knowing all of the lines no matter what scene you’re watching, Advent Calendars, setting up and decorating the tree- then trying to keep your pets from destroying it or knocking it over, the annual ‘Toys for Tots’ donation delivery, listening to Christmas music while curling up beside a crackling fire, seeing how excited (and sometimes better behaved) little kids get as Christmas Eve approaches, those Little Debbie Christmas Tree snack cakes that are so bad for you but so delicious at the same time, snow ball fights, the last minute gift shopping trip, and of course- visiting/spending time with family and friends.

What are some of your “Holiday Essentials?”

Good Reads: “Evolution”

When I heard that Joe Manganiello from “True Blood” and “Magic Mike” fame was going to be in Harvard Square this past Tuesday night, I was admittedly a little giddy. Joe’s portrayal of Alcide makes him one of the only characters that’s even remotely tolerable on “True Blood” anymore, and I enjoyed whistling in the theater with the other women who attended screenings of “Magic Mike” on opening night (no shame, ladies- that was a lot of fun.)

Then when I heard that Joe’s appearance in Cambridge was to promote his new book, “Evolution,” centered around fitness, my curiosity was piqued. While I consider myself to be in decent shape (there’s always room for improvement, of course,) I’m not exactly savvy when it comes to muscle sculpting- and considering how jacked Joe looks in movies and television, I wanted to know exactly how much time and dedication it takes for him to stay that way.

EvolutionBookSigning3

I headed down to The Coop after meeting up with my good friend Evan, who is also a fitness enthusiast, and it turns out that Joe is just as huge in person as he is on screen. He’s also very funny, charming, motivational, and sweet. Also- handsome. He’s really, really handsome. That needs to be said.

I’ve thumbed through the book since picking up a copy, and sure enough as one would guess- getting and maintaining Joe’s type of physique takes a ton of dedication and hard work. I think it’s a decent read for anyone out there looking for a no bullshit and no shortcuts approach to fitness and who is willing to put in the hours and self-discipline. I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s honest and humorous and has really good tips and exercises. There’s plenty of pictures, too- which is always a bonus.

I don’t anticipate having biceps like Joe’s anytime soon, but I could manage the abs. Definitely.

I love Boston at nighttime, period- but around the holidays, the city looks particularly magical- even when there’s no snow on the ground and it’s cold-but-bearable in the temperature department. That was the case last night when I parked my car down by the waterfront after work to attend the Boston Bloggers’ Holiday Meet & Greet. The walk to the meet-up was continually interrupted by my stopping and snapping photos of some of my favorite holiday decorations en route, including but not limited to the Faneuil Hall Christmas Tree and my all-time favorite- the illuminated trellis at Columbus Park. The fact that I wasn’t freezing to the point of being in pain was a bonus, too. If the entire winter could be/feel like it did last night- from now until Spring- I probably wouldn’t be such a hermit and frantically search for reasons to stay indoors from December-March.

BostonBloggersHolidayMeetup4

The meetup, which took place at Warehouse Bar & Grille, was my first with Boston Bloggers, and apart from being a really fun way to meet and network with other bloggers in the community who share similar interests- the event was also charitable- with each attendee bringing unwrapped presents for Toys for Tots (one of my favorite organizations!)

Now, I consider myself a pretty social person, both out in the world and also on the internet where I love interacting with people across the city, the state, the country- and globe- but even I was admittedly a little nervous walking into Warehouse all by myself, towards a large gathering of strangers, and preparing to try and mingle. Thankfully, it was super easy- because everyone there was so, so, SO nice, friendly, personable, and fun.

I walked in, a little wide-eyed and not quite sure where to start, when I was given a cute sticker with my name on it to wear and a program identifying the names, blogs, and social media contact information of everyone in the room. From there, I was immediately ushered over by a couple of people (Laura and Nick, respectively!) who had apparently noticed the bewildered look on my face as I tried to figure out where and how to begin- and made me feel more than welcome as they introduced themselves and we began swapping our information, links, and talking fashion/music/hobbies.

After that, it was a lot easier to make rounds around the room in between partaking in some of the delicious food that was provided for us. I met so many wonderful, talented, brilliant, and truly fascinating writers whose work I can’t wait to follow and read. There were also a few people I unfortunately didn’t get the chance to speak at length to- but there’s always the next event- and I will definitely be in attendance. I had such a lovely time at this one!
