New Looks and Books.

Comments 3 Standard

If you’re a regular reader of Legally Redhead, you may have noticed the layout of the blog changed today! As much as I loved the cute, olive green style I’ve had for the better part of a year and a half- I’m quite smitten with this new (but still easy to navigate) design and header, made possible by WordPress. I hope you all like it as much as I do!

This afternoon, the lovely Imogen linked me in “The Reading Habits Tag,” and I thought I’d unveil the new design of LR while answering the book/reading questions presented to me in her original post.

So without further delay:

TheReadingHabitsTag1. Do you have a certain place for reading at home?

I usually read while I’m in bed, or curled up on my couch depending on how quiet it is in my living room. If it’s nice out, though, I like to sit out on my patio/deck with a good book!

2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?

I do the unthinkable- I turn over the corner of the page I left off on. I know it’s awful but I have a tendency to misplace bookmarks or pieces of paper! They always fall out and I always lose my place. Dog-earing the page is so much more convenient for me.

3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter or a certain number of pages?

I try to finish whatever chapter I’m on before I save my place and take a break from the book. There have been a couple of occasions where I’ve had to stop abruptly, sometimes mid-sentence- but I usually go back and re-read the chapter, or at least a few pages before where I left off- mostly to re-familiarize myself with what was happening in the story before I got sidetracked.

4. Do you eat or drink when reading?

It really depends on how I’m feeling at the time. If I’m hungry or thirsty, then obviously I’ll eat or drink while I read (I just have to be careful to not spill anything on the pages.)

Although I really do love a good cup of hot chocolate while I read by the fire during the winter.

5. Do you watch TV or listen to music whilst reading?

Not usually, since it can be a little distracting. If I’m reading during a flight, I tend to keep my headphones on just out of habit- and even then I’m usually listening to very soft jazz music so it won’t break my concentration.

6. One book at a time or several at once?

One book at a time! I like to focus on and finish one story before I begin another.

7. Reading at home or everywhere?

I prefer reading at home since it’s where I’m most comfortable, but I read a lot when I travel, too- in the airport, on the plane, in my hotel room, etc.

8. Reading out loud or silently in your head?

Silently in my head, unless I’m reading something to someone. Otherwise, I feel like reading out loud is sort of like those people who listen to music through their headphones or ear buds but insist on singing along anyway. It’s distracting to other people!

9. Do you ever read ahead or skip pages?

I try not to. There have been a couple of instances where I’ve been so frustrated with a book that I’ve skipped ahead to see if there’s any indication of it getting better/what happens to the character to determine if I want to keep reading- but I prefer to be surprised.

10. Breaking the spine or keeping it new?

I know that sometimes it can’t be helped, but I like to keep my books in good, new-ish condition as much I can for as long as possible. That way, if I decide to lend/give the book to someone else to read, I know it won’t be falling apart on them.

11. Do you write in your books?

I’ve highlighted stuff before, but I very rarely write in my books. Again, a lot of it has to do with potentially lending/giving the books to other people to read. I want them to be in good shape!

12. What are you currently reading?

This is going to sound ridiculous, but while helping with some Summer cleaning at my mom’s house, I recently came across a crate of my old collection of “The Baby-Sitters Club” books, as well as some other novels I absolutely adored as a kid. Nostalgia got the better of me, and I started re-reading some of them again. I’m currently in the middle of “Boy-Crazy Stacey,” which was always my favorite BSC book. When I’m done with that (which should be in no time at all,) I’m moving onto my other favorite childhood book I found- “The Silver Tree” by Ruth L. Williams. Memorieeeees!

Instead of tagging any specific person or people for this, I’m just going to tag anyone who is interested in participating in this fun little questionnaire!

FourthOfJuly20141

One thing that I’ve learned over the years is that when it comes to going away for a day/weekend- it’s best not to get dragged down with planning every minor detail of your day(s.) During the work week, I depend on plans. I plan what to eat, I plan what to wear, I plan appointments for clients and I plan what files and what paperwork to focus on for a (pre-planned) amount of time. I have been told by many people- friends, family, and colleagues- that I am both the most organized and most meticulous person they know.

So when it comes to my days off and/or vacations, I like to loosen the grip I have on my schedule and just let the chips fall where they may, so to speak. I tend to make one solid plan- like heading to a specific location, seeing a specific attraction, or visiting a specific shop or restaurant- and let the rest of my day(s) and experiences happen from there. It makes it easier to unwind and enjoy myself.

I consider myself blessed to have a tight-knit circle of friends and acquaintances who share a similar view on plans and weekend getaways, too- so when a group of my girlfriends asked me to come along for a spontaneous day at Cape Cod this past weekend, I didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation- because I knew I’d have an incredible time.

FourthOfJuly20142

The one solid plan for this particular adventure was to bring our friend Alyssa to a family function at her parents’ vacation home just outside Hyannis. The drive there, although long, was also insanely fun thanks in part to our playlist and the fact that Alyssa brought a bunch of snacks for those of us who were crammed in the backseat of the car. We arrived late in the afternoon, and once Alyssa reached her family’s house- the four of us that were left hit the town with no real destination in mind.

I haven’t been to Hyannis since I was a kid, and even then- my time there was limited to the hotel where my dance studio was staying for a regional competition. I didn’t see the beach and I certainly didn’t see the cute main street lined with bars, restaurants, museums, and stores. That street is where we ended up first this past weekend, grabbing some really good food at Fresh Ketch and sitting outside to people watch before we did a little shopping and ultimately decided to hit the beach as the sun was setting.

The sand wasn’t scorching by the time we arrived but the water was so warm. I was glad I had decided to wear a lightweight cotton (and tie-dye!) dress since it made wading into the waves a lot easier. The group of us stayed there for a couple of hours, alternating between going in the water and lounging on a blanket to watch the sunset as well as a few different groups who had also come down to the beach set off the last of their stockpiled Fourth of July fireworks.

When Alyssa eventually called us to come meet her for more fireworks- this time viewed from the roof of a nearby yacht club with her family- we gathered up our things and jumped in the car to go. We managed to catch the tail-end of the show, which was still impressive nonetheless- before we went back to her family’s house for cake and goodbyes and then started the long journey home.

It was such a beautiful, perfect, hassle-free day. The scenery was gorgeous, the company was, of course- fantastic- and almost none of it was planned in advance. We just went with it- and it all worked out in our favor.

Quick Eats: Red, White, and Fruit.

Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans! Unfortunately for those of us on the East Coast, our day of outdoor cookouts and night of fireworks was rained out thanks to Hurricane Arthur barreling up the coast. We had a tremendous thunderstorm last night, and it’s been pouring out for most of today- limiting most of the festivities to the indoors.

While I will be braving the rain to attend a friend’s birthday party later on tonight, I’ve been settled in for most of this morning and afternoon- re-living the glory of past episodes of “The Walking Dead” during AMC’s “Dead, White & Blue” marathon (which spans seasons 1-4 and leads up to a Sunday night preview of the upcoming fifth season- for anyone who needs to catch up!)

I’ve also been whipping up some quick, healthy, delicious- and patriotic colored snacks, too- namely simple fruit and whipped cream bowls using fresh strawberries and blueberries:

RedWhiteAndFruit2

RedWhiteAndFruit3

Using the extra strawberries and blueberries I didn’t put in the fruit bowls, I made smoothies by adding a sliced banana (for more flavor,) a couple scoops of non-fat vanilla yogurt, and a cup of milk into my Magic Bullet. Not to sound like an infomercial, but if you’re looking for a convenient, easy to use- AND easy to clean blending/shredding/chopping/slicing/dicing/mashing/whipping/etc. appliance, you have GOT to invest in one of these. The device does pretty much everything in a matter of seconds with no mess and no hassle, and it’s small for easy storage without taking up a ton of counter or cabinet space. The smoothies, after everything was added into the glass container- took all of 20 seconds to chop the fruit, whip up the yogurt and milk, and blend it all together for a delicious drink.

The fruit bowls and the smoothies were so refreshing (despite the rain, it’s still stifling hot and humid,) were low in fat, and were healthy- which makes them even better. I’m hoping to share more detailed smoothie recipes shortly (I make a mean chocolate-banana one!) since I’ve been having such a blast playing around with the Magic Bullet.

I hope everyone has a great rest of the Fourth!

June 2014: In a Nutshell.

Me at Old Orchard Beach, Maine. June 2014.

Me at Old Orchard Beach, Maine. June 2014.

I can’t believe another month has passed.

I can’t believe July is here, and that in three weeks, I’ll be heading out to San Diego for a West Coast vacation and a long weekend at San Diego Comic-Con. It feels like just yesterday I had successfully (and surprisingly) scored passes and was anxiously calculating how many months I had to wait to attend.

More than anything, I can’t believe 2014 is halfway finished already!

But before I dive headfirst into July- which may prove to be one of my busiest, craziest months yet- I have to give some love to June. I had a lot of fun over these past few weeks: soaking up the sun at the beach and on the boardwalks in New Hampshire and Maine, having BBQs and playing mini-golf with friends, cooling off and catching movies at the local (and air conditioned!) theater, sipping iced green tea lemonades while cruising around the city and blasting tunes with my girlfriends- a Summer tradition since my teens- and of course, getting my fan-girl on at the “Walker Stalker” convention in Boston.

With all my time outdoors, and even with religious sunscreen application- I still managed to get a little bit of a tan, too. The horror!

July will undoubtedly be filled with more Summertime shenanigans and as many day-trips as I can fit in- but I’ll also be putting the final touches on my SDCC costumes, which I’m so excited to finally share prior to my trip. Speaking of, for the blog- I’m planning a couple of hotter weather & vacation-themed posts for the coming month, too- including my “How-To” for Summer hair care, and a peek at the essentials inside my carry-on bag. All of that and a couple of refreshing recipe posts, and I’ve got myself a lot of writing to do!

GLOSSYBOX: June 2014 Review.

June2014GlossyBox1

June2014GlossyBox2

With nearly two years worth of GlossyBoxes under my belt, I strongly feel that the collaborations and themed boxes are my favorite to receive. It’s always a treat to see what comes in boxes curated by successful bloggers and beauty insiders, and the brightly colored or patterned themed boxes really stand out among the pink and black ones that usually arrive in the mail.

June’s GlossyBox was just that. With a “Stars & Stripes” theme, or as I called it- the “America! F*ck Yeah!” box- which arrived just in time for the Fourth, the box was, as you could probably guess- patterned like the American flag- and was filled with American-made products and a mystery gift card to C. Wonder (the card amount can be anything from $5 – $500!) I plan to re-use the box this week when I gift some Fourth of July goodies to my niece.

What I Received:

RUSK Texture Dry Finishing Spray

Sumita Beauty ‘Champagne’ Eye Shadow Pencil (*Full Size!*)

Camille Beckman Platinumé Gold Imperial Repair Hand Therapy

AYRES Patagonia Body Butter

STRANGEBEAUTIFUL Library of Color COLORBLOC

June2014GlossyBox3

Product # 1: RUSK Texture Dry Finishing Spray ($18)

I’m going to start with my least favorite product in June’s GlossyBox. From past experiences, texture sprays do nothing for me. Be it because of my curly hair- which I think can be considered a texture all in itself- but most sprays I’ve tried over time have made my curls crunchy, stiff, and have given them the appearance of having a chalky residue on them. Even still, I attempted this spray and hoped for the best. I knew I was in trouble the second I shook the can as directed, pressed down on the nozzle, and the spray shot out of the aerosol container like a bullet instead of a gentle spritz. Sure enough, my hair almost immediately became stiff and crunchy- and even after working it through my curls with my fingers to the best of my abilities- there was still white, chalky residue left behind. Ew.

Would I Purchase?: No. This product was a complete and total dud from start to finish for me. Between the difficulty in spraying it into my hair in short, quick bursts, to the less than desirable results and the patchy white specks it left behind from my roots to the ends of my strands- I would skip this spray entirely.

Product # 2: Sumita Beauty ‘Champagne’ Eye Shadow Pencil ($18)

When it comes to my makeup regimen, especially Monday-Friday mornings before I head to work, convenience is key. I want to look nice and put together, but I also don’t want to be late to the office- and I also don’t want to have to get up at 5:30 a.m. specifically to perfect a smokey eye. Enter this pencil, which just made my weekday A.M. crunch way easier. With a soft tip to ensure no uncomfortable poking or scratching takes place, this beautiful and flattering shimmery golden/nude applied like a dream and stayed in place for my entire work day and well into the evening without fading or smudging. I’ve been wearing it daily, blending it from my lids into my crease. It gives me just enough color to make my eyes look bright and awake- without being too time consuming to use. I’m in love.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I was thrilled that I received a full size of this product, and will absolutely be re-purchasing when I run out of it. This is a pencil I would keep in my purse at all times, as it’s a great, long-lasting eye shadow that is suitable for everyday wear- but can also be used as a lovely highlighter, too.

June2014GlossyBox6

Product # 3: Camille Beckman Platinumé Gold Imperial Repair Hand Therapy ($20)

In the Summer months, my face gets more oily- but my hands feel dryer. How or why that happens, I’ll never know. Maybe it’s because Mother Nature is a cruel prankster, or maybe it’s because I spend more time outdoors and am frequently using hand sanitizer as a result (but let’s just blame Mother Nature for it for now, okay?) Either way- I tend to keep a rich hand cream or balm in my bag for those instances where my palms need a little extra T.L.C.

I was intrigued when I first opened this tube of hand cream, mainly because of it’s really refreshing citrus and floral scent- which was strong and stayed on me for quite a while- but wasn’t overpowering to the point of causing a headache. It was just a very pretty fragrance that I was frequently complimented on whenever I used this product. And the actual formula of the cream? Amazing. My hands felt so moisturized, so soft, and so relieved for hours. I was really impressed with how often I DIDN’T have to keep re-applying this stuff to maintain the results.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This might legitimately be one of the best hand creams I’ve ever used. It was lightweight, worked wonders on my skin, smelled great, and lasted for a really long time. I would definitely purchase this in the future- and would also probably invest in the body lotion that is available in this collection, too.

June2014GlossyBox7

Product # 4: AYRES Patagonia Body Butter ($28)

If it wasn’t obvious by now, I am really picky when it comes to lotions/creams. I like my skin to feel nourished and moisturized without looking or feeling slick and greasy- and I also don’t like to be overloaded with chemicals, dyes, perfumes or anything that can cause a painful or damaging reaction. The more natural, the better. I’ve heard good things about AYRES products in the past, and was excited to receive a sample of their body butter in June’s GlossyBox. Sure enough, this formula- good for all skin types- sank into my skin when I applied it post-shower without leaving any kind of film or sheen behind. The texture of this product wasn’t heavy like other body butters I’ve tried in the past- which was also a bonus as it makes for a mess-free experience. My skin felt soft for hours and was lightly scented with a surprisingly relaxing combination of jasmine, rosemary, and a hint of patchouli. I enjoyed this very much.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is actually a great body butter for the Summer because of how lightweight in consistency it is. The butter is easy to apply, smells nice, is all-natural, and is full of antioxidants and vitamins that are good for my skin. Also? a full-sized tub is only $28. Awesome.

June2014GlossyBox8

June2014GlossyBox9

Product # 5: STRANGEBEAUTIFUL Library of Color COLORBLOC ($18)

And lastly, with the Fourth approaching, GlossyBox made sure I was able to give myself a ‘MERICUH’N manicure with these two highly pigmented nail lacquers from STRANGEBEAUTIFUL. After one coat, my nails were vibrantly popping with the bright red and navy blue- but the photo above is after two coats and a top coat to seal the shades in- and I’m very pleased with the results. The polish dried quickly, and even after a lot of typing and everyday wear and tear, there’s been no smudging or chipping.

Do you know why? Do you?

BECAUSE THESE COLORS DON’T RUN.

Sorry. I had to say it.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I don’t know if I would necessarily purchase the same red and navy blue in the future, but I’m really enjoying the pigmentation and longevity of the formula of these lacquers and would love to try some of the other available shades.

With the exception of the pepper spray disguised as hairspray, I thoroughly enjoyed June’s GlossyBox. Through the “Stars & Stripes” box, I’ve discovered four products/brands I will be following/purchasing from in the future, and now with the eye shadow pencil and nail polish- I have everything I need to look pretty and patriotic on the Fourth of July!

Tales From Old Orchard Beach…

In the Summer before my junior year of high school, I traveled to Maine with my best friend at the time, Kristi, and her mother and step-father for a week long vacation in Old Orchard Beach. It was the first and only time I’d ever been, and it was one of the most memorable vacations I’d ever gone on. Be it because of OOB’s classically cool, old-fashioned pier and boardwalk where we spent most of our time, their amusement park (which includes some pretty outdated rides that don’t feel all that safe but are still a thrill nonetheless,) or the fact that Kristi and I were both mending our broken teen-aged hearts at the time of our trip (and nothing is more devastating or overly dramatic than a broken teen-aged heart.) Whatever the reason, or maybe a combination of all of them- I always look back on that week, and that entire Summer, fondly.

This past weekend, a little more than twelve years later and with a considerably less broken heart, I decided to head back to Old Orchard Beach for a day. Although Kristi, at home with her son (but very much with me in spirit,) was absent- my best friend Sean came with me to enjoy the slightly modified but still very cool pier, and hop on nearly all of the still rickety carnival rides until we thought we were going to throw up our order of boardwalk french fries.

OOBJune20147

OOBJune20148

OOBJune20149

OOB also has a pretty big arcade, and much like the Summer of 2002, I spent a good amount of time (and quarters) perfecting my skee-ball skills and re-visiting The Simpsons pinball game- which I hadn’t seen in ages. I used to play it ALL THE TIME at Hampton Beach when I was a kid, and then it just disappeared one Summer, never to be seen again until this past weekend. I was so entranced by playing it that Sean ended up snapping a few photos of me, lost in concentration.

When we ran out of quarters, Sean and I combined our measly ticket total and cashed them in for the grand prize of a plastic top, two erasers, and a bouncy ball which undeniably made us the envy of everyone in the arcade:

OOBJune201410

Of course, you can’t end a day at the beach without heading down to the actual ocean and without grabbing some homemade ice cream. As the afternoon was coming to an end, I kicked off my flats and sprinted down to the surf by the pier to attempt to re-create a photo that exists somewhere in the abyss that is my old photo albums, of me, posed with a gigantic grin- with the surf and boardwalk behind me. My hair is a lot more red in this most recent photo, and I’m missing my old glasses and sequin-covered tube top- but my expression of sheer giddiness is still very much present.

After I rinsed the sand off of my feet, it was a quick walk back into town to stuff myself with peanut butter cup ice cream while sitting outside a cute little general store/cafe- and then from there- back to the car to head home to Boston as the sun was setting.

OOBJune201411

OOBJune201412

If you live in the area and/or don’t mind a bit of a drive, then I highly recommend visiting Old Orchard Beach. It’s a lot less crowded than some of the other popular New England beach destinations in the Summer, there’s more to do, the beach is clean, parking is convenient and cheap (everything is surprisingly inexpensive, really,) and there’s a lot of cute motels and inns in the area that are within walking distance to the boardwalk and pier. I fell in love with this place twelve years ago and have been kicking myself for not going back sooner- but I’m sure glad I did this past weekend- and I’d like to go again before the Summer is over.

Loot Crate: June 2014.

LootCrateJune20141

Growing up, I was the only girl in a neighborhood filled with boys, and as a result- many rainy days during my childhood were spent indoors with my guy friends rigging up stunt tracks for Hot Wheels cars, playing with G.I. Joe’s- or running around with Transformers figurines. While the boys almost always had a disagreement over who got to play as Optimus Prime, I relished in stomping all over their figurines (and hopes and dreams) as Megatron. Much like my enthusiasm for all things HYDRA in the Marvel Universe, I’ve rooted for the bad guys, the Decepticons, from the get-go.

With another (and unnecessary) Michael Bay ‘Transformers’ sequel set to be released in a few days, June’s Loot Crate “rolled out” with the theme “Transform!” which was actually a nice shot of nostalgia.

LootCrateJune20142

With my monthly collector’s pin, I also received a few Warheads candies (I haven’t had those in ages!) and a print of the monthly Loot Crate Magazine, which had been digital last month. Inside this month’s edition were games and comics- as well as an article detailing the creation of, and the rise of popularity, of the ‘Transformers’ toys, cartoons, and movies. There was also a Q&A with Jonathan Cathey of The Loyal Subjects, who make some of the coolest, cutest collectibles around.

LootCrateJune20143

A Loot Crate just wouldn’t be a Loot Crate without some stickers included. I received a sheet of these logos detailing different teams involved in the MLG (Major League Gaming,) as well as the Autobot insignia. I might be a Decepticon girl at heart, but the insignia is pretty cool and will act as a nice replacement to my Star Trek Communicator Badge sticker, which has long since faded and fallen off of the back of my trunk.

LootCrateJune20144

Speaking of the MLG, this wrist-band came in June’s Loot Crate (as well as a gift certificate to gain a month’s worth of premium access to their official site,) which I may or may not wear when I sit down to catch up on the agony and heartache that is Telltale’s “Walking Dead” game. The fabric of this wristband will do nicely when I have to wipe away my tears.

I also received this Bumblebee HexBug Transformers toy, which can apparently be flipped up into a little fighting bot. This might go to my brother, who although is a few years older than me- was also a big ‘Transformers’ fan when he was a kid and will undoubtedly get a kick out of it.

LootCrateJune20145

Although I’ll be passing Bumblebee along, I’m keeping this adorable Soundwave figurine from The Loyal Subjects for myself. You have to love a Transformer that is so out of date considering 90% of kids nowadays don’t even know what a cassette player does, let alone looks like. Poor little Soundwave. If only you could transform into an iPhone.

LootCrateJune201456

LootCrateJune201457

Lastly, I cracked up at this great “Transformers/Back to the Future” mash-up shirt- which I’ll be wearing when I lounge around my place or at night to sleep in since it’s a tad too big on me. The design is brilliant.

Thanks for another great box, Loot Crate! It hasn’t- and probably will never- encourage me to watch Mark Wahlberg struggle to act his way through “Age of Extinction,” but it was fun nonetheless!

I never thought it would be possible to fall madly in love with a $10 a month subscription service, but here we are and here I am- very much smitten with Ipsy, who have been on a quality winning streak over the past few months. June’s bag, “Pretty in Paradise,” was already a hit for me just by the bag alone: a bright, Summery, tropical/floral print pouch- designed by Rebecca Minkoff– that I’ve been using as a makeshift wallet over the past few days.

What was inside the bag was even better.

What I Received:

Nicka K New York Shimmer Eyeliner (*Full Size!*)

NYX Butter Gloss in ‘Apple Strudel’ (*Full Size!*)

Realtree for Her Perfume Spray

Be A Bombshell ‘Lash Out’ Mascara (*Full Size!*)

Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Nourishing Treatment with African Macadamia Oil

IpsyBagJune20145

IpsyBagJune20146

Product # 1: Nicka K New York Shimmer Eyeliner ($4.99)

The last time I received a liquid eyeliner in a subscription service, it was a bright purple one that had come in one of my GlossyBoxes. While the color was pretty for the whole five minutes it stayed put on my eyelid before things went downhill- the overall experience was a flaking, smudging mess- and I had vowed never to venture into the land of liquid eyeliners ever again. I was quite content with my gel and soft pencil liners.

When I first saw this bright, sparkling blue liquid liner with a very, VERY thin applicator- I wasn’t expecting much. In all actuality, I had even prepared myself for when it would inevitably flake off by bringing a makeup remover pen with me after I’d applied it (which was surprisingly easy and mess-free, by the way. Both of my lids came out nice, thin, and even in one sweep!) Instead, the liner stayed in place all. day. with no smudging, flaking, fading, or staining. I’m talking 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. of continuous wear. I was impressed, to say the least- and when I saw the other available colors this formula comes in, including two matte shades- I recanted, just a little- on my vow never to use liquid liners again.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! While I was admittedly a little concerned with the amount of shimmer this eyeliner seemed to have at first glance (it gave me flashbacks to some of my questionable makeup choices circa 2001/2002,) the color was actually quite lovely on my lids and in no way garish. It was just the right amount of pigment and sparkle.  Of course, as I’ve already stated- the longevity of this eyeliner is incredible, and for $4.99 a tube- you can’t go wrong. I would re-purchase this blue, as well as most of the other colors in the collection, too!

IpsyBagJune20147

IpsyBagJune20148

Product # 2: NYX Butter Gloss in ‘Apple Strudel’ ($5)

With a name like ‘Apple Strudel,’ I had expected this gloss (which smells faintly like the dessert) to be more red than the bright peach/coral it actually was. With buildable coverage, this gloss applied like an absolute dream and felt wonderful on my lips- making them look and feel soft and smooth. The color, perfect for the Summer, lasted a considerable amount of time before I had to re-apply, but even after it had faded, my lips still felt hydrated and, well, buttery! This formula comes in a wide array of colors, all with fun, cute dessert names. I’m eyeing ‘Cherry Pie,’ ‘Tiramisu,’ and ‘Strawberry Parfait’ as we speak.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I’ve always been more of a lipstick kind of girl, but this gloss really won me over. This color complimented my skin tone, but more than anything- I loved the rich, moisturizing formula that left my lips silky and not sticky. Much like the Nicka K eyeliner I received in this month’s Ipsy bag- this was also an affordable find. You also can’t beat the $5 price tag. It’s a win/win.

IpsyBagJune20149

Product # 3: Realtree for Her Perfume Spray ($24.99)

I’ve developed a bit of a knack for detecting what notes are in certain fragrances just by one whiff, but this perfume spray from Realtree had me stumped when I spritzed some on me. At first, this fragrance smelled like a mix of florals and fruit, but as time wore on, it seemed to smell a bit more musky and heavy on my skin. It wasn’t necessarily a bad thing- but it was hard to pin down what exactly this perfume was going for. It did last for a very long time, though, which meant less re-applications were needed and that’s always a good thing- but this wasn’t exactly a fragrance I’d wear in the Summer. Maybe in the transitional months like in Spring and Fall- where I can get away with wearing a heavier perfume with a little more fruit/floral undertones to it.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. While this perfume wasn’t bad by any means, it didn’t exactly “wow” me with it’s ever-changing notes. I don’t mind subtle changes in a perfume, but this one had completely shifted drastically after a couple of hours and I hadn’t been prepared for it. Thankfully, both the floral/fruit and the musky aspects of this perfume all smelled good- but I’m not sure it’s something I would make a point to wear on a regular basis.

Product # 4: Be A Bombshell ‘Lash Out’ Mascara ($15)

I’ve been in need of a replacement mascara for a couple of weeks now, and was about to head off to Sephora this week to find one when this full-sized tube came in June’s Ipsy bag. I’m still on the fence when it comes to ‘Be A Bombshell’ cosmetics, having come across some hits, and some misses in the months they’ve teamed up with Ipsy. While I appreciated the long, cone-shaped brush of this mascara- which made for an easy application to all of my lashes (including the pesky ones by the inner corners of my eyes,) even after three coats- my lashes didn’t look particularly longer, fuller, or more dramatic. I tried it for a few days, just to be sure- but there was no improvement. Looks like it’s back to Sephora for me.

Would I Purchase?: No. This mascara didn’t give me any real noticeable results, even with multiple coats. The only upside to this formula- since overall it was a disappointing product- was that the mascara didn’t flake or smudge. It’s got longevity on it’s side, but that’s about it.

Product # 5: Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Nourishing Treatment with African Macadamia Oil ($12.99)

My hair tends to get a little dry in the Summer, be it from days at the beach to my obsession with sea salt sprays- which means deep conditioning and hydration are a must to preserve my hair’s health, color, and curl. I typically stock up on hair masks and conditioners on a weekly basis, and my shower cap has become my best friend for overnight treatments. When I saw this small tube of Dove’s new color-safe treatment- infused with sunflower seed, almond, coconut, and macadamia oils- among others- I was pretty excited to give it a try.

I’ve been using this product in two ways. The first, as a nighttime mask after wetting and conditioning my hair. I rub some of this oil in my palms and run it through my still damp strands before I tie my hair up into a loose bun, cap it, and let it soak in overnight. When I wake up in the morning and rinse the oil out, my hair is silky smooth, and much easier to style.

The second way is as an actual daytime styling product, again after wetting and conditioning my hair. After I spritz in some of my sea salt spray, I rub just a little bit of this oil over my curls to keep them from drying out without diminishing or destroying the beachy, wavy look I covet so much this time of year. Again, my hair feels smooth and soft to the touch all day long.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is one of those great, versatile hair care products that won’t damage your strands or break your budget. This oil can be used sparingly for sleek styling, or generously for a deep, conditioning treatment. My hair looks and feels great after each use, and a little goes a long way- so I know when I purchase a full-sized bottle- I’d be getting my money’s worth.

With the exception of the mascara, and the perfume that I’m still undecided on- June’s Ipsy bag was a hit for me. Two of the three full-sized products I received I LOVED, and I was introduced to a great hair care treatment that I plan on incorporating into my Summer styling regimen in the coming weeks.

And again, the bag really is super pretty.

Walker Stalkers Take Boston!

WalkerStalkersBoston20142

When I’d first heard rumors that a “Walking Dead”-centric convention was possibly coming to Boston, my curiosity was more than piqued. When the rumors were confirmed to be true, and the convention in question was actually the fairly new “Walker Stalker Con,” created by the wonderful minds behind the “Walker Stalkers” podcast– James Frazier and Eric Nordhoff- I was elated. I’d heard an overwhelming amount of good things about past Walker Stalker conventions in other cities- so I couldn’t wait to check it out. What better way to prepare myself for San Diego Comic-Con, and really kick off the whole Summer/Fall convention circuit in general- than by enjoying one centered around my favorite franchise- right in my own backyard?

It wasn’t until I saw the impressive full list of confirmed guests and the schedule for some of the panels and events planned that I had to refrain from throwing on my (nearly completed) Daryl Dixon costume a little too early and have a full-blown fan-girl freak-out. I grabbed my weekend pass and I headed down to the Westin on the Waterfront this past Saturday and Sunday to get my zombie aficionado on.

First and foremost, I really want to commend the staff involved in the Boston “Walker Stalker Con,” which includes both hired hands as well as the tons of eager volunteers I encountered during my two days in the hotel. Every single person I spoke to who was involved in pulling this off were so friendly, so helpful, and so, so funny- that I was at a loss for words more than once. I’ve been to various conventions over the past few years- and some of the people working different booths, panels, or photo areas- have all but ruined the experience for myself and others with their rude, condescending, and mean-spirited attitudes. That wasn’t the case with “Walker Stalker Con.” I was met with smiles, laughter, more than one high-five, and even patience at one point when I got lost trying to find an area of the convention I was supposed to be in at a certain time. The upbeat attitudes of the staff and volunteers didn’t falter once- which only helped to make my weekend even better. It’s always more enjoyable when EVERYONE is having a good time.

Secondly, not to sound too cheesy- but I consider it an honor to be a part of such a wonderful community of fans. You’d be hard pressed to find people more dedicated to a comic/show/game than “Walking Dead” fans. Best of all? There’s no competition or rivalries within the fandom. Generally speaking- everyone gets along. At least that was the case with this past weekend’s convention. I met so many interesting, talented, sweet, knowledgeable, and passionate people of all ages and from all walks of life over the past couple of days who inspired me with their creativity and who truly made me feel welcome during discussions- ranging anywhere from cosplay to post-apocalyptic survival preparation to what our predictions were for season five. Getting to know so many people with common interests was not only refreshing- it was ridiculously fun.

Lastly, the cast of “The Walking Dead,” past and present, who were able to come to Boston this past weekend were fantastic. Every person I spoke to (and there were a lot of them!) were kind, humble, appreciative, and definitely hilarious. It was  an incredible experience to be able to ask questions and have some one-on-one time with each of them. Much like the fans of the show- the actors who have played a role in it are also some of the coolest people you could ever hope to meet.

I’m not quite sure what was happening here.

WalkerStalkersBoston20148

Out of all the panels, I think my favorites were Jeff Kober’s (who played Joe near the end of this past season, and who never fails to scare the living hell out of me in nearly every role he takes on,) and a “Little Dead Girls” one that featured Madison Lintz (Sophia,) Addy Miller (Zombie Girl) and Meyrick Murphy (Meghan) which was absolutely adorable- and maybe a little morbid.

Sean Patrick Flanery was also in town for a “Boondock Saints” 15th Anniversary Celebration that extended through the weekend and included Q&A’s and a screening of the movie with Brian Mahoney and David Della Rocco. Sean had his own panel on Sunday afternoon- which was a pretty wild event in itself and included a lot of really funny stories from his days of filming different projects- including a few near-death experiences.

When I wasn’t checking out the panels, saying hello to friends at different local vendor booths (many of whom I see every October at the ‘Rock N’ Shock’ convention,) or snapping photos- I was posing for some, instead.

Me with Jon Bernthal (Shane Walsh)

And Chad Coleman (Tyreese!)

And Jeff Kober:

And Brighton Sharbino (Lizzie,) who had me “just look at the flowers.”

WalkerStalkersBoston201413

Sean Patrick Flanery, OF COURSE:

WalkerStalkersBoston201414

WalkerStalkersBoston201415

Lauren Cohan (Maggie,) who was even more stunning in person than she is on TV:

WalkerStalkersBoston201416

And Steven Yeun (Glenn!)

There were so many other people who I didn’t have time to photobomb with my ridiculous grin, but who were lovely none-the-less, including Alanna Masterson, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Sonequa Martin-Green, Michael Cudlitz, and Jose Pablo Cantillo.

All in all, I had an absolute blast. If you’re a fan of “The Walking Dead” and this convention comes to an area near you, I highly recommend going. You won’t regret it. Between the guests, the incredible staff, and the other fans in attendance- this might be one of my favorite convention experiences ever.

Top 8 Summer Flicks.

Comment 1 Standard

Although the Summer Solstice isn’t until June 21st, I’m already preparing for the season by getting together all of my essentials: Bronzer? Check. Sea-salt spray? Check. Gold eye shadow? Check. Cute wedge sandals and a big beachy hat? Check and check. I’ve even picked up a bright, lightweight tote to make my hustling and bustling around the hot, humid city a little easier through the most sizzling months of the year.

But apart from my wardrobe changing and my makeup regimen getting switched up- one thing that definitely gets me in the Summertime frame of mind is gathering around with friends in front of the A/C (or strategically placed fans,) with a popsicle or frozen yogurt, and watching a good Summer-y movie. Over the years, I’ve accrued a handful of go-to favorites that never get old that I thought I’d share for anyone who needs a break from getting sunkissed for an hour or two- or for an all-night marathon.

So here are my top eight Summer flicks!

DazedAndConfused1. Dazed and Confused (1993)

“AIR RAID!” Matthew McConaughey just looooves those high school girls, Ben Affleck can’t seem to let go of his (two-time) senior bully status, and Parker Posey initiates (and humiliates) the incoming freshman girls by covering them with ketchup, mustard , eggs, and flour while wearing an impressive pair of tube socks. ‘Dazed and Confused’ is a cult classic with a terrific ensemble cast and an awesome soundtrack as the movie depicts the carefree craziness, the hilarious mischief, the innocent crushes, and the poignant coming of age during of the last day of school in the Summer of 1976.

WetHotAmericanSummer2. Wet Hot American Summer (2001)

Another cult classic with an impressive ensemble cast. ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ is one of the funniest, most insane movies of all time. Featuring the likes of Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Janeane Garofalo, Christopher Meloni (as Gene- my favorite character,) Michael Ian Black, and Paul Rudd- among so many others- this movie follows the counselors and campers during the last day at Camp Firewood in the Summer of 1981. There’s a talent show, a gay wedding, fridge-humping, sweater-fondling, an inspiring dance segment- and a piece of a sky-lab falling from space that threatens to destroy them all. Years later, and I laugh from start to finish whenever I watch this.

Grease3. Grease (1978)

Although ‘Grease’ doesn’t just take place during the Summer, and instead follows the tumultuous romance between greaser Danny Zuko and good girl Sandy Olsson (as well as he ups and downs of their friends- Rizzo being my #1 girl!) throughout their senior year of high school in the 1950’s- I only ever watch this movie during the Summer. With a ridiculously catchy, can’t-help-but-sing-a-long soundtrack- this movie’s questionable “change yourself for the person you have a crush on” moral/ending was a tad on the ridiculous side- but it’s still a classic nonetheless- and Jeff Conaway was a babe as Kenickie.

TheTexasChainsawMassacre4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974 & 2003)

You can’t have a Summer movie marathon without one or two good horror movies- and they don’t get much better than ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’, both the 1974 original and the 2003 re-make (which I’m actually a big fan of,)  that needs no introduction. Five teenagers are traveling through desolate Texas when they encounter an unhinged hitchhiker and make the mistake of picking them up- setting in motion a series of horrifying events that include, but are certainly not limited to torture, murder, cannibalism, and power tools. Even though I’ve watched these movies countless times, I still jump and cringe during certain scenes. The sound of the chainsaw gets me every. single. time.

NowAndThen5. Now and Then (1995)

I have a special place in my heart for “Now and Then,” which I watch every Summer with my mom at least once- and have done so since it’s release when I was a kid. The funny, often touching film follows four girlfriends in their small town during the Summer of 1970 when they are coming of age, dealing with changes in their families (divorces, death, etc.) saving money to purchase a tree house, feuding with neighborhood boys, and attempting to solve a murder mystery after a seance gone awry. The movie often fast-forwards to the four friends as adults in the 90’s, where they have reunited in their old neighborhood for the birth of a child and reminisce about the lessons they learned during that Summer and the mistakes they’ve made since. This movie is a tear-jerker for sure, but I love it.

DirtyDancing6. Dirty Dancing (1987)

With moves that make ‘Grease’s’ Danny Zuko look like an amateur, Patrick Swayze’s portrayal as Johnny Castle was nothing short of swoon-worthy, and his chemistry with Jennifer Grey as Frances “Baby” Houseman make them one of my favorite on-screen couples of all time. ‘Dirty Dancing’  follows Baby and her family during their Summer vacation at a failing resort in the Catskills Mountains in 1963. She meets Johnny, the resort’s seasonal dance instructor, and through unfortunate circumstances surrounding his dancing partner- Baby ends up temporarily taking her place- and the two eventually fall in love despite the disapproval of Baby’s family and the meddling of Johnny’s superiors at the resort. Everything works out in the end, though- with a poignant dance number and Baby nailing the lift she’d been too afraid to try earlier in the movie. It’s a beautiful scene that may or may not bring a tear to my eye (it totally does.)

TheSevenYearItch7. The Seven Year Itch (1955)

Hands down one of my favorite and most beloved Marilyn Monroe films, ‘The Seven Year Itch’ has withstood the test of time, still being clever and funny all these years after it’s release. Richard, an ad executive with an overactive imagination, and whose wife and son are vacationing out of town for the Summer, befriends his beautiful new neighbor (played by Monroe.) He develops an innocent attraction to her- never actually leading to anything that would spoil the overall good nature of the film and it’s characters- but his fantasies and paranoia make for some really fun scenes.

LordsOfDogtown8. Lords of Dogtown (2005)

And lastly, a biographical movie with an incredible soundtrack- ‘Lords of Dogtown’ is based on the rise of the Z-Boys, skateboarders who paved the way for extreme sports in the early 1970s in Santa Monica. I saw this in theaters with friends and was not only impressed with the music used throughout the film, but by how beautifully shot this movie was and by the performances from all of the actors- especially the late Heath Ledger’s portrayal of Skip Engblom. Even if you’re not a fan of skateboarding- this is a must-watch.

And there you have it! Eight films that are sure to get you ready for the Summertime. A lot of these titles are currently available on Netflix, should anyone want to watch them right now!

And of course, I am always open to recommendations- so if anyone wants to leave their favorite Summer movies in the comments section- feel free! I’d love to check them out!
