If my pictures (or at least the title of this blog) weren’t enough of an indication, I have bright red hair and very fair skin- and while I love the head-turning combination of the two, it makes buying flattering cosmetics a little tricky at times. It’s easy for some beauty products to wash me out- or worse- make me look orange. It’s even easier for certain colors of eye shadows or lipsticks to cause me to not only stumble, but trip and fall completely over the line between “natural’ and “character out of a Tim Burton movie” with little to no effort at all. I have to tread carefully when trying new cosmetics, as made evident by my beauty box subscription reviews over the months.

I was recently contacted by Just For Redheads Beauty Products, a cosmetics company based out of Arizona that specialize in skincare, hair care, and makeup for- you guessed it- redheads. Founded by Paula Pennypacker in 1993, Just For Redheads, or “JFR” for short, have a wide array of products at reasonable, affordable prices for fiery-haired females like myself to help us achieve both natural, everyday makeup looks, as well as less-harsh dramatic looks, too. Their hair care is col0r-safe, and the nourishing shampoos and conditioners contain sunscreen to help protect sensitive scalps and prevent reds from fading. Not only that, JFR have an assortment of nail polishes, brushes, and beauty tools, too. They’ve been featured in PEOPLE Magazine, the LA Times, and on the Lifetime Network, among other media. Best of all? They ship internationally- so lovely redheads outside of the U.S. can get their hands on these products, too!

I was asked if I’d be interested in trying some of their products, and of course I jumped at the chance! My bundle of stuff arrived quicker than I anticipated, and I was beyond excited to dive right in and use everything. All of the products I received were full-sized, and came with an emery board and two pencil sharpeners (which I’m especially thankful for, because I have a habit of misplacing my sharpeners constantly.)

Cream Shadow Eye Lighter in “Antique Brass”

First things first- I loved the silky texture of this combination nude/soft gold shadow. It wasn’t too hard or too “crumbly” the way other cream shadows can be on contact. It applied smoothly, and gave me just enough color where I could wear it on it’s own for a subtle hint of shimmer, build it to a slightly more noticeable smoky eye, or use it as a base to create a different look all together. I DO recommend using a primer with this product, as I do with all shadows (even the cream ones.) My eyelids are more on the oily side, so wearing this shadow all by itself with no primer caused it to crease in no time at all. With a primer, however- it stayed in place comfortably for hours without budging or fading.

This particular formula of shadow comes in ten different shades, all of them lovely, but I feel “Antique Brass” would also be most suitable for highlighting he brow bone, too. It’s just a great, versatile color.

“Sienna”

(*PLEASE NOTE: I’m wearing my green contact lenses in the photos above. The colors of the liners appear similar against the natural blue of my eyes, as well.*)

Ultimate Gel Eye Liners in “Baroque” and “Sienna”

Give me gel eyeliner in a pencil form, and I will give you my money. Like the cream shadow, these pencils were incredibly silky- and not at all irritating on my delicate eyelid (they have Vitamin E and Jojoba Oil in them, which may explain that.) The colors: “Baroque,” a beautiful, shiny pewter shade, and “Sienna,” a less shiny, deep brown- applied without fuss or smudging. If the pigmentation of the shades or mess-free and smooth application weren’t enough to win me over, then the lasting power definitely did it. These liners stayed in place all day without fading, flaking, or running down underneath my eye. I was thrilled.

This type of eyeliner only comes in these two shades right now, but I’m hoping JFR add more selections soon because I love these  so much. Between the two, I’d have to say my favorite shade is “Baroque,” if only because of the shimmer it has and the way it seems to brighten my whole eye area- but I’ve been wearing both colors regularly since I’ve received them.

Mascara Voyage in “Ginger Auburn”

While I have overall fair features, my eyebrows and eyelashes have always been on the darker side. As such, I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to wear dramatic amounts of black mascara and pull it off (at least I’d like to think so.) From past experience, I need quite a few brush strokes of brown or brown/black mascara to get it to show up on me. This mascara, a medium-brown, and with a tapered brush to get to those pesky corner lashes, did require more than a couple swipes- and the result was a very natural, very subtle look I thought would be appropriate for work or for those “au naturale” makeup days.

Application wise, this mascara didn’t clump or flake everywhere, and although I’ve become so accustomed to the dramatic, false-lash look, I can see myself wearing this during the day in the office. This formula comes in four shades, and I think if I were to purchase one in the future- I would probably go one shade darker, just to match my eyelashes a little more closely.

JustForRedheads11

Brow Tint in “Auburn”

When I first unscrewed the cap of this brow tint, I was a little concerned with how light it appeared on the mascara-style-brush. As I’ve mentioned, my brows and eyelashes are on the darker side, so I was worried that this would make them look strange. Even still, I wanted to try it. I applied the tint gingerly, gradually adding more when I saw how well the color blended with my brows. When I was done, my eyebrows looked fuller, even, and most importantly- natural. There was no weird residue left behind, or stiffness to the touch. I think out of everything I received in my JFR care package, this product was the most pleasantly surprising. At first glance, I never would have guessed the color would have looked so good.

This formula comes in three shades, “Auburn” being the medium between the other two available colors.

Auburn Mineral Lipstick Kit

Finally, to go with my assortment of eye products, JFR sent me this lipstick/balm compact that fits perfectly in my makeup bag. The colors, selected specifically for those with Auburn hair, are universally flattering and range between the light nude “Chestnut,’ to the subtle pink “Beachy,” to the deeper, more dramatic “Desir,” and finally, the bold and bright “Sultry.” The lipsticks, applied with a brush, were hydrating and non-sticky, and lasted for a really long time. I only had to re-apply once or twice throughout the day, and my lips didn’t feel dry or cracked even after the color wore off. These balms didn’t leave behind any kind of stain or ring around the edges of my lips, either- which is always a plus.

There are two types of these compacts: “Auburn” and “Strawberry Blonde” (lighter shades.) From the “Auburn” compact, I think my favorite color by far is “Chestnut.” I love a good nude color, and this one was fantastic.

Overall, I am so, so pleased with everything I received from JFR. This is a great line for women with red hair and/or fair skin who have been searching for alternatives for more natural-looking, quality beauty products that won’t break the bank or give undesirable results. I’m so appreciative for the opportunity to write up this review. I greatly enjoyed trying everything that was sent to me- and look forward to making purchases from the brand in the future. Thanks, JFR!*

GLOSSYBOX: March 2014 Review.

March2014GlossyBox2

This past weekend has been a strange one. On Saturday morning, while heading down the walkway towards my driveway and my car, I slipped on a patch of ice that had accumulated when the melting snow pooled and froze overnight. Now, I’m no stranger to taking a tumble. I’ve lost my footing enough times to know what a sprained tailbone or scraped knees feel like- but this time, I fell forward onto my face. Luckily, I had the mind to put my hands out in front of me to try and break my fall, if only a little, but I still managed to successfully smash my mouth and nose off of the back of my hands- resulting in quite the nosebleed and the slight shifting of my two front teeth from the force of the impact.

When the blood was rinsed away and the initial shock wore off, I noticed a small gap between my front teeth that hadn’t been there before. In fact, I hadn’t seen that gap since I was 13 (the year I got braces,) and it’s unexpected return resulted in a call to my dentist and the setting up of a couple of appointments within the next couple of weeks for x-rays and procedures to fix the damage. I was briefly on a precautionary diet of soft foods only (i.e.- soup, pudding, and instant breakfast mixes,) but have since gone back to eating regular food as the swelling goes down and the cuts on the inside of my mouth begin to heal.

Mind the gap! A few hours after my initial faceplant- sans-blood everywhere.

Mind the gap!
A few hours after my initial faceplant- sans-blood everywhere.

Despite some soreness and general nervousness at the possibility of having to have any kind of surgery, even if it’s minor, I’m not without humor about the situation. I’ve been embracing my temporary Georgia May Jagger/Vanessa Paradis’ tooth-gap while I have it, and my friends (and my mom!) have been so good at keeping my spirits up. I’d originally had a date on Saturday night with Troy to see the new Muppets movie and get ice cream- the Muppets being my idea, of course, and the ice cream being his- and obviously that was postponed- but he was a good sport about it and unbelievably compassionate. I’m hoping to re-schedule soon.

My March GlossyBox arrived last Friday, and with a few quiet days at home as I recovered from my accident, I decided to make the most of my unplanned time off and have some fun with the products I received.

March2014GlossyBox3

March2014GlossyBox4

This month’s GlossyBox came with an extra surprise in the form of a beautiful bangle bracelet from Alex and Ani. I own two A&A bracelets, the “Aunt” charm from my niece, brother, and sister-in-law- and a skeleton key charm from my aunt and uncle. I love them both, and this swan charm will be a nice addition to the collection.

WHAT I RECEIVED:

Alex and Ani “Scent 7” Soap Bar (*Full Size!*)

Alterna Haircare’s Bamboo Volume “Plumping Strand Expand”

Nails, Inc. Nail Polish in “Brook Street”

Sisley: Paris’ Black Rose Cream Mask

Etre Belle Cosmetics Anti-Aging Liplift Peel (*Full Size!*)

Product # 1: Alex and Ani “Scent 7” Soap Bar ($14)

Alex and Ani really went all out in March’s GlossyBox, first with the charm bracelet, and then with this full-sized bar of soap from their new “Scent 7” collection. I’m a sucker for pretty soaps, and this one was particularly luxurious- not only because of how nice it smelled (like the perfect combination of spices and a hint of musk,) but also because of how nice it felt on my skin. The bar lathered up nicely, made my skin feel squeaky-clean and conditioned without drying it out or leaving behind any kind of residue. The fragrance also stayed on my skin for quite some time after I dried off, which was nice. I love it!

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I think this is a great soap, and definitely something I’d like to keep next to my tub in the future. I also think this would make a lovely gift for any bath product aficionado because of it’s quality and price-point. I’d like to try more products from this fragrance collection.

March2014GlossyBox7

Product # 2: Alterna Haircare’s Bamboo Volume “Plumping Strand Expand” ($22)

I’ve used Alterna Bamboo products in the past (specifically their ‘BoHo Waves” spray,) and loved the results, so seeing another product from the line that I was otherwise unfamiliar with was a treat. My hair is naturally pretty thick, so I wasn’t sure if the results this “plumping” cream was supposed to give me would actually be noticeable. I applied as directed, pinned my hair up, and let it dry overnight. When I brushed out my hair the following morning, my hair felt soft, and smooth, but didn’t look or feel particularly thicker. Although the results weren’t necessarily bad, this isn’t something I think I would need in my hair styling regimen.

Would I Purchase?: No. I think this product might be better suited for those with finer hair, as it could possibly thicken their strands better than it did mine- but I’ll stick to my usual products. The texture of this cream felt nice, not heavy- and it’s perfectly suitable for those with color-treated hair- but it didn’t “wow” me.

March2014GlossyBox8

March2014GlossyBox9

Product # 3: Nails, Inc. Nail Polish in “Brook Street” ($9.50)

Ah, Nails, Inc. We meet again- and this time- you’re in the most irresistible of shades. I don’t care if it’s not going to be Summer for a few more months- one look at this tropical pink/coral color and I had to have it on my nails immediately. I’m a big fan of the Nails, Inc. polishes I’ve received in my beauty box subscriptions so far- from their wide array of shades, to their finishes, and to the longevity of their formulas. This lacquer was no exception. I’m absolutely smitten with the color. Really. The photo above doesn’t do it justice.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I would definitely purchase a full-sized bottle of “Brook Street.” It’s so bright, fun, and Summer-y. I have a feeling I’ll be sporting this non-stop from June through August when I spend the majority of my weekends cruising the coast or running around on the beach and the boardwalk.

March2014GlossyBox10

Product # 4: Sisley: Paris’ Black Rose Cream Mask ($158)

Yes, you read that correctly. A 2.1 .oz tube of this mask goes for $158 a pop. When I discovered that tidbit of information, I was almost afraid to open the tiny sample I received for fear that I would somehow destroy it before I had the chance to try it. When I think of face masks, I think of heavy clays, or painful peels (R.I.P. eyebrows,) but the Black Rose Cream Mask is applied almost like a moisturizer, left on undisturbed for 10-15 minutes, and then any excess is gently wiped off. I used the sample as directed, taking in the light rose fragrance of the mask as I applied it- waited the appropriate amount of time- give or take a few minutes- and then lightly tissued my face.

The results? There were none. My skin looked, and felt, the exact same way it had before I applied the mask. There was no noticeable smoothness, or softness. My skin wasn’t particularly hydrated more than usual. Even when I attempted a little more of the mask a few days later, I still didn’t see a difference.

Would I Purchase?: No. Are you kidding? Absolutely not. $158 is entirely too much money to be spending on such a small amount of product that gives me no better result than if I had applied a lightweight moisturizer, instead. Save the money you would have wasted on this dud of a product and spend it on a mask that actually works, instead.

March2014GlossyBox11

Product # 5: Etre Belle Cosmetics Anti-Aging Liplift Peel ($18)

As it turns out, when you fall and smash your face and have to go to the dentist to assess the damage- your lips tend to end up a little cracked and dry at the end of the day. Who would have thought? It should come as no surprise that I was beyond relieved to get a lip exfoliator- with a convenient angled tip for a mess-free application- just in time to relieve my pout. Even after just one use, my lips felt so much softer and looked a lot less chapped. I also noticed that when I used this product and applied lipstick shortly afterwards, the color went on a lot smoother and stayed in place a little longer than usual.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I thought this lip exfoliant was fantastic, and a little bit goes a long way. This is one of those products I plan on keeping in my makeup bag at all times should I need a pre-lipstick prep or just a quick refresher for my lips in case they get a little rough during the day. This stuff really works, and it only takes a minute to use it.

Three products I loved, two I didn’t- and a beautiful bracelet to make up for said two samples that didn’t blow me away? Overall, I’d say March’s GlossyBox was a hit. I loved the variety in what I received, as well as the value (which was pretty incredible this month!) Keep it up, GB.

Ipsy Bag: March 2014 Review.

March2014IpsyBag3

March2014IpsyBag4

For the first time since joining Ipsy, the products included with my March bag actually sort of went along with the month’s theme, “Destination Beauty,” which had a Spring Break/tropical vibe to it. The bag itself, a collaboration with artist Klari Reis, is by far my favorite out of the ones I’ve received so far. I loved the colors and the pattern, and will be using it as a little clutch for my phone and lip gloss come Summer.

February’s Ipsy bag was one of the best, in my opinion- so I was more than ready to see how March’s compared to it.

What I Received:

Be a Bombshell “Bora Bora” Eyeshadow Quad (*Full Size!*)

Nicole by OPI Roughles Nail Lacquer in “On What Grounds?” (*Full Size!*)

Klorane Smoothing and Relaxing Patches

bareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lipstick in “Get Ready”

March2014IpsyBag6

March2014IpsyBag7

Product # 1: Be a Bombshell “Bora Bora” Eyeshadow Quad ($16)

Even though there’s still snow on the ground, I couldn’t help but feel like I was going on a vacation in some faraway tropical paradise when I used this beachy eye shadow quad for the first time. With rich golden and brown tones, and a beautiful deep aqua shade- this shadow applied easily, evenly, and didn’t budge or flake for hours. The photo above is just one of the looks I created with the quad (using the aqua as a subtle liner and predominantly featuring the golden/reddish hue on my lid,) but there’s so many gorgeous combinations you can make with this product. I’m very, very impressed.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I think I’m going to save the “Bora Bora” quad for the Summer when the colors are a bit more appropriate, but I would absolutely purchase this again in the future if and when I run out. This quad was decent quality and it’s inexpensive to boot- which is always a plus for someone like me who doesn’t like wasting money on overpriced cosmetics that are poor quality or give shoddy results. This was a pleasant surprise.

March2014IpsyBag8

March2014IpsyBag9

Product # 2: Nicole by OPI Roughles Nail Lacquer in “On What Grounds?” ($7.99)

Some people hate textured nail lacquers. Personally, I love them. I think they’re usually fun and unique- so I was all about trying this sky blue “pebbled” polish A.S.A.P. Much like the “Bora Bora” quad, this lacquer from OPI reminded me of afternoons by the ocean in San Diego. It applied easily, giving great coverage in just two coats (and despite the bottle stating that a top coat wasn’t necessary, I applied one anyway to add some longevity to the polish since I do a lot of typing.) I adore the color, and the rough-looking finish. I’ve read reviews by some people who have also received this product in their March Ipsy bag that say that the texture “snags” on clothing, etc. but I have yet to experience that problem.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is a beautiful Spring/Summertime polish with a cool twist. I love the blue, and I would gladly purchase the other available shades in this formula, too.

March2014IpsyBag10

Product # 3: Klorane Smoothing and Relaxing Patches ($18)

In February’s GlossyBox, I had really enjoyed the Anatomicals under-eye patches I’d received. When I saw these individually packaged patches in this month’s Ipsy bag, I had hoped I’d like them just as much. Unfortunately, these patches weren’t nearly as cooling and refreshing as the Anatomicals ones. On the contrary, they made my under-eye area feel a little dry, and kind of itchy. Fortunately, the feeling went away shortly after I peeled them off, and naturally- I didn’t notice any smoothing or de-puffing results. These patches were a bust.

Would I Purchase?: No. I think I’m going to stick with my Anatomicals patches. I had better results with those. This product might be better suited for others, but they caused minor and temporary irritation to my eye area. Definitely not worth purchasing.

March2014IpsyBag11

March2014IpsyBag12

Product # 4: bareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lipstick in “Get Ready” ($18)

It wouldn’t be Spring without the obligatory pink-hued lipstick/lip gloss sample in monthly subscription boxes. I’m not complaining- I just expected it. I’ve never tried bareMinerals makeup before, as I’ve heard mixed reviews over the years. Some friends love it, others, not so much- so I was pretty neutral when I first applied this little tube of rose-colored lipstick.

First things first, this color applies amazingly smooth and the finish is like a combination of a lipstick and a lip gloss, which was nice. It wasn’t too shiny and yet it wasn’t matte, either. The lipstick is also very pigmented, so a little goes a long way and the color is pretty noticeable after only a couple of swipes across the lips. Also- this formula lasts a LONG time. After my morning coffee, after lunch, and well into the afternoon- there was still color on my lips.

Now, the downside. I don’t know exactly what it was in this particular formula- but this lipstick dried my lips out. It wasn’t so severe it was excruciatingly painful or anything, but it was a minor discomfort throughout the day- which was kind of a surprise considering how creamy the texture of it is. I attempted to re-apply this product with a balm under it, and then again with a balm over it, which helped a little- but my lips still felt uncomfortable.

Would I Purchase?: No. As flattering as the color was and as nice as this lipstick applied- the unusual drying result isn’t worth a purchase of a full-size in any of the available colors. A shame, really- since the pigmentation is really good and the longevity was stellar.

So, to summarize: we have a really cute bag, two products I loved, and two products that missed their mark. While March’s Ipsy bag wasn’t as much of a success as February’s- it still wasn’t bad. I wasn’t in love with everything I received, but overall- I was still pleased.

It helps that the two products I liked were the full-sized ones, of course.

Sephora Mini-Haul: Spring 2014.

Comments 3 Standard

Spring2014MiniHaul1

There may still be some snow left on the ground (currently being washed away with rain as we speak,) and I might not be able to go outside without at least having a sweatshirt or a light jacket on- but Spring is definitely in the air here in New England. It’s only a matter of time before the flowers bloom, the boots and winter coats get tucked into the back of my closet until much later on this year, and I can wear skirts and heels without having to worry about busting my ass on ice or getting gross city-slush sprayed all over me from passing cars while I’m walking alongside snow banks.

It also means I have to lighten my makeup, in which I transition out of the dramatic wine-colored lip or the dark, bold eye I love so much in the colder months and replace them with something a bit more season-appropriate. Since this past Winter seemed as though it was neverending, I’ve been beyond eager to dive into pinks and nudes and light purples. Unfortunately, since my last makeup purge of empty and expired products- I didn’t have much to work with.

Earlier this afternoon, I had stopped by Sephora to replenish my eye shadow primer (the tube I currently have is on it’s death bed,) and while I was there- I figured I’d splurge (just a little bit!) and pick up some stuff to get me through Spring.

Spring2014MiniHaul2

Spring2014MiniHaul3

I finally got around to picking up the coveted “Naked 3” palette from Urban Decay. I am so pasty I’m practically transparent, so I have to be careful when it comes to rose/pink eye shadows- but these shades, some of which have a subtle golden undertone to them- look AMAZING with my skin tone.  There are a variety of shimmery and matte tones to work with, so I can go from an everyday neutral look to a dramatic one in little to no time at all, which is awesome. “Naked 3” came with a double-ended brush and a sample of UD’s ‘Primer Potion’ (which I was unaware of until I opened the box- after purchasing a full-sized one,) and I’m really looking forward to playing around with this palette in the coming months. (Urban Decay “Naked 3” Palette: $52)

Spring2014MiniHaul4

My current blush is a combination of a deep rose/brown-ish tone, which is great for the Winter- but for the Spring, I wanted to lean towards something a little more peachy/pink. I wanted something that wouldn’t look orange or fuchsia on my fair skin. To achieve the desired shade, I turned to Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in “Luminous Flush,” which is described as being a champagne-rose color but looks more like a soft coral on my cheeks. This blush has just enough shimmer in it to make me look like I have a healthy, natural glow- not a radioactive one. (Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush: $35)

Spring2014MiniHaul5

Even though I have my phenomenal purple lipstick I created in BITE Beauty’s Lip Lab a couple of weeks ago, I also wanted an everyday, neutral lip gloss to wear (specifically for work) that wasn’t heavy or sticky. Enter Urban Decay’s “Naked” Lip Gloss in “Nooner,” a subtle nude shade that doesn’t wash my complexion out and isn’t tacky feeling. “Nooner” is a combination of a lip gloss and a lip balm, without any gross and unnecessary chemicals- so not only do I get a really great shine with this product- but my lips feel ultra-hydrated and smooth as well. Perfection. (Urban Decay’s “Naked” Nourishing Lip Gloss: $20)

And lastly, while I’m quite content with the shape and thickness of my eyebrows, I would like them to match my very, very red hair just a little more. I picked up a tube of Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel in “Auburn,” a reddish-brown, to get my brow/hair color  as close as possible. This lightweight gel applies with a mascara wand and stays put all day without flaking or fading. It’s like I’m almost, ALMOST a convincing redhead! (Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel: $22)

And with that little haul over and done with- I am now officially ready for April showers, May flowers, and whatever is happening right now in March.

GLOSSYBOX: February 2014 Review.

Leave a comment Standard

February2014GlossyBox1

February2014GlossyBox2

Ipsy set the bar pretty high for beauty box subscription standards in February. I had loved everything I received in my bag, and didn’t think it could be topped. Even so, I kept an open mind when my GlossyBox eventually arrived. I’d already been made privy to a couple of the samples I’d be receiving a little earlier in the month, but everything else was still very much a mystery. The nail polish, although expected- caught my attention right away, as did the bright packaging of the Anatomicals product- but I wanted to try everything included before I reached a final verdict.

What I Received:

Sumita Beauty Color Intense Pencil in ‘Kala’ (*Full Size!*)

Pureology COLOUR FANATIC Multi-Tasking Hair Beautifier for Color-Treated Hair

Anatomicals Puffy the Eyebag Slayer Wake Up Under Eye Patches (*Full Size!*)

Lauren B Nail Couture in ‘City of Angels’ (*Full Size!*)

Skin&Co. Roma Truffle Therapy Serum Plus

February2014GlossyBox3

February2014GlossyBox4

Product # 1: Sumita Beauty Color Intense Pencil in ‘Kala’ ($15)

The first product I tried from February’s GlossyBox was this black soft pencil liner. When I first pressed it to my lid, the tip broke off completely into my bathroom sink, which I should have taken as some sort of foreshadowing- but I sharpened it to a point and tried it again anyway. While the pencil did apply smoothly- eventually- it stayed in place for all of a couple of hours before my cat-eye was smudged and smeared everywhere. By my lunch hour, I resembled The Winter Soldier from the upcoming “Captain America 2” movie.

Nailed it.

Nailed it.

Would I Purchase?: No. This eyeliner was awful. The pencil tip kept crumbling and the liner itself doesn’t last long at all. $15 for something so poorly made is an insult, and you’re better off buying a less expensive brand that will apply with much more ease and won’t budge for twice as long as this one.

February2014GlossyBox5

Product # 2: Pureology COLOUR FANATIC Multi-Tasking Hair Beautifier for Color-Treated Hair ($24)

From personal experience, red hair is one of the hardest colors to maintain. If you aren’t a natural redhead (which I am not,) and don’t use the right products- your color can very quickly fade into an orange-y, coppery disaster. You need special shampoos, conditioners, masks, styling creams/sprays/serums- and a lot of patience to keep red hair looking fabulous- so I am always willing to try products that I receive in subscription services that are designed specifically for color-treated locks. This lightweight, nicely-scented spray was advertised as being able to do a number of beneficial things for my hair: from protecting my color, to taming frizz, to strengthening split ends, to adding moisture and shine, and so on.

I can’t speak for long-term results since I only received enough of this product to last me a few days, but I didn’t notice a dramatic difference in either frizz-control or shine. My hair definitely felt softer, but overall I wasn’t completely blown away with this.

Would I Purchase?: No. While there wasn’t anything particularly bad about this spray, there also wasn’t anything particularly extraordinary about it, either. I’ve achieved better, more noticeable results with the products I currently have in my hair care regimen. I wouldn’t run out to purchase a full size of this anytime soon, if ever.

February2014GlossyBox6

February2014GlossyBox7

Product # 3: Anatomicals Puffy the Eyebag Slayer Wake Up Under Eye Patches ($11.29)

Oh, Anatomicals. How I love your products, your packaging, and your puns. While puffy eyes aren’t a huge concern for me (I’ve always been a little bug-eyed and have long since accepted and embraced it,) I really wanted to try these patches, which feel a little slimy when first removed from the packaging- but effortlessly stuck to and stayed in place on the delicate skin under my eyes without discomfort or irritation. The non-sticky gel the patches are coated with feels cool and tingly, and after 30 minutes- my eye area feel soft, hydrated, and refreshed- and stayed that way long after the patches were removed.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is another winner for Anatomicals. While I can’t say I saw drastic results for puffiness (again: forever bug-eyed,) I think these would be an amazing treat for myself after a long day of reading/working/blogging/Tumblr-ing, or for travel during a particularly long flight (or after an even longer night.) These patches are, again- refreshing- and also affordable. I would absolutely buy these.

February2014GlossyBox8

February2014GlossyBox9

Product # 4: Lauren B Nail Couture in ‘City of Angels’ ($18)

Nail polishes are almost always a hit with me when it comes to subscription boxes. I think in all the bottles I’ve received in the past year or so that I’ve been subscribed to services like Ipsy and GlossyBox, I’ve only ever been disappointed with the quality of one or two nail lacquers. This creamy ballerina pink applied evenly and dried quickly- two things I look for in a polish- and I am in love with the color. It’s a bright, pretty, and appropriate for all occasions hue that is beyond perfect for the Spring. It’s also vegan, cruelty-free, and void of any harmful chemicals- which makes this lacquer another winner to add to my ever growing collection.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I would absolutely re-purchase this polish, and probably some of the other polishes in the “Nail Couture” line. I love the color selection, the formula, and the durability of the finish. I haven’t seen any chipping or peeling yet, and I am constantly typing away with my fingertips.

Product # 5: Skin&Co. Roma Truffle Therapy Serum Plus ($75)

Had I been drinking any kind of liquid when I saw the price of this serum, it would have resulted in the mother of all spit-takes. While I am never against treating yourself or splurging on something from time to time, $75 for 1 fl oz. is absolutely insane to me. Automatically, I was a bit biased- thinking this was one of those over-hyped, overpriced pre-moisturizer “miracle creams” that would either irritate my skin, or wouldn’t do anything at all.

Yeah… I was wrong.

I’ve been using this serum after exfoliating and cleansing my face morning and night, and mother of GOD does it make my skin feel smooth- and so, so soft. The serum itself smells a bit like a dessert that I can’t quite put my finger on, but the fragrance didn’t cause any kind of breakout or bad reaction on my face. Also, a little bit goes a LONG way- so you don’t have to worry about running out within a week as long as you’re using it sparingly.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! It kind of kills me to say it, because I definitely think the price point is unreasonable, but this is sincerely a really great serum that has been giving me phenomenal results that I would probably purchase in the future if I really wanted to do something nice for myself that was on the expensive side.

Three great products I enjoyed, two of which were full-sized, out of five? I’ll take it. February’s GlossyBox was a good one. It may not have topped Ipsy’s bag for the month, but overall I was pleased and discovered some great brands and products I’ll definitely be checking out and considering in the future.

IpsyBagFebruary20143

How much did I love February’s Ipsy bag? Let me count the ways. This pink and pastel products filled pouch, with a Valentine’s Day-inspired theme, arrived just in the nick of time to lift my spirits in the midst of some serious snowy-slushy-frigid temperatures blues. The colors of each of the makeup and nail care items was like a little (and much needed) hint of Springtime, and with more than one full-sized product included- I definitely got my money’s worth.

What I Received:

Pacifica Hawaiian Ruby Guava Body Butter

POP Beauty Plump Pout Mini in ‘Peony Petal’

Eyetini Cordial Shadow + Base in ‘Ambrosia’ (*Full Size!*)

City Color Be Matte Blush in ‘Fresh Melon’ (*Full Size!*)

ZOYA Nail Lacquer in ‘Odette’ (*Full Size!*)

IpsyBagFebruary20144

Product # 1: Pacifica Hawaiian Ruby Guava Body Butter ($15)

This body butter couldn’t have arrived at a better time. I’d recently run out of the little tube of hand lotion I kept in my purse for work/social events/etc., and quickly substituted this to soothe my dry, sore, winter-worn skin. Not only did this rich, non-greasy butter give my hands (and elbows!) immediate, long-lasting relief, thanks in part to the shea butter and almond oil it’s loaded with- but it smelled like Skittles/Smarties/insert-tangy-candy-here. I know that may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I really enjoyed it. It was a very distinct, sweet fragrance.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! While I loved the scent of this particular body butter, I especially loved how soft and hydrated it made my skin feel. It absorbed quickly into my skin without leaving any kind of film or residue on the surface, and it lasted all day.

Product # 2: POP Beauty Plump Pout Mini in ‘Peony Petal’ ($16)

When I first opened my February Ipsy bag, my eyes were immediately drawn to the cute little tube of brightly colored lip gloss that is POP Beauty’s ‘Peony Petal’ Plump Pout. The gloss, a bright pink/coral, was highly pigmented, and the formula didn’t feel thick or sticky on my lips the way some other “pout-enhancing” glosses can. The only downside to such a nicely textured and colored gloss was the longevity. This is NOT an all-day wear product. I had to re-apply more than once, particularly after eating or drinking anything- but the finish was so nice that I didn’t really mind all that much.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! Although I would have liked this gloss to last a little longer, the overall quality of this product is really nice. I think it’d be perfect to wear for a quick, temporary pop of color- be it for a meeting, or a class, or just to have something on your lips for a couple of hours.

IpsyBagFebruary20147

IpsyBagFebruary20148

Product # 3: Eyetini Cordial Shadow + Base in ‘Ambrosia’ ($18)

Two things can happen when I use cream eye shadows. 1, the formula applies smoothly and evenly, is easy to blend, and lasts all day, or 2, the formula is thick, near impossible to blend, and creases or cracks in less than an hour. Luckily for me, this shadow fit into the first category. I applied this beautiful light purple (with a hint of pink and gold sheen) shadow all over my lids using the sponge wand applicator, and blended upwards into my crease using my fingertips. The color stayed put without fading or creasing all day and well into the evening, and it didn’t feel thick or heavy on my lids. It was lightweight and comfortable.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I’m confident enough in this cream shadow to say it’s something I would swear by. The color is beautiful (and a peek at the other available shades on the Eyetini website is tempting my inner shop-a-holic right now,) and the hassle-free application and staying power makes this a must-have product.

Product # 4: City Color Be Matte Blush in ‘Fresh Melon’ ($2.99)

At first glance, I was a little worried that this blush would make my pale cheeks look like they had more of a “radioactive flush” as opposed to a “natural flush.” The color doesn’t stray from it’s name. This is a pure watermelon pink with no shimmer or sparkle. I held my breath, swiped my blush brush over the compact, applied- and was pleasantly surprised with how easy this bright hue was to blend. By the time I was finishing contouring, my cheeks had a subtle, “just pinched” look to them- and the blush stayed in place all day. When I checked City Color’s website to see what other shades in this formula were available, I couldn’t believe the price point. $2.99 for the amount of product in the compact and the quality of the finish it gives is an absolute steal.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I don’t know if I would purchase ‘Fresh Melon’ again, because although I did like it, it’s not a color I typically go to for a year-round look. I think I’d probably gravitate more towards  the ‘Papaya’ or ‘Guava’ tones I saw listed on City Color’s website since they appear to be a little more on the rosy/neutral side, which is more flattering for me. I loved the matte finish, however. It’s perfect for this time of year when I wear more makeup than I do in the Spring and Summer.

IpsyBagFebruary201411

IpsyBagFebruary201412

Product # 5: ZOYA Nail Lacquer in ‘Odette’ ($9)

I do declare that 2014 is the year of natural nails. It took what felt like forever for me to grow out my acrylic-damaged tips, but now that I have, the upkeep with my significantly shorter, rounded digits has been much easier and refreshingly pain-free. I actually look forward to painting my fingernails now, as opposed to before when it just seemed like such a chore- so when I saw this pretty purple polish (say that ten times fast,) in my Ipsy bag- I was really excited to apply it. ZOYA is quickly becoming one of my favorite nail polish brands, not only because of their incredible color selection and durability- but because their formulas of free of harmful chemicals.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! ‘Odette’ applied like a dream and dried quickly with a creamy finish. It’s such a lovely shade for Spring that I would gladly wear again and again.

I think the February 2014 Ipsy bag has been one of my favorites since I started subscribing to the service. I loved every product and would definitely purchase full-size/refills of them in the future. The makeup colors were bright, cheerful, and fun to play with- and the body butter and nail polish were great products to add for a little diversity instead of sticking with all makeup or all skincare samples, etc.

Well done, Ipsy!

GLOSSYBOX: January 2014 Review.

Comments 2 Standard

January2014GlossyBox1

January2014GlossyBox2

January was a rough month for GlossyBox. After a December box that fell a little flat, the subscription service was plagued with weather-related problems throughout January, resulting in delayed shipments. A peek at any of GlossyBox’s social media accounts revealed a flood of angry customers demanding to know where their boxes were and complaints from people who weren’t satisfied with what they’d received in the shipments that had gone out on time (although that happens to pretty much every subscription service EVERY month no matter what.)

I received my GlossyBox earlier last week, but it typically arrives near the end of the month, anyway- so I wasn’t too displeased. At first glance, it looked as though the company had made every effort with the products they picked and packed to make up for any inconvenience.

But I have to try them, of course.

What I Received:

Balance Me Super Toning Body Wash

TONI&GUY Casual Sea Salt Texturising Spray

Vichy Aqualia Thermal Rich Cream

beautyblender.pure (with cleanser)

Bellápierre Cosmetics Mineral Blush in “Desert Rose”

January2014GlossyBox3

Product # 1: Balance Me Super Toning Body Wash ($14)

If you’ve been following Legally Redhead for any amount of time, or at the least if you’ve been reading my cosmetics/beauty boxes posts, you’re probably aware that I’m kinda’ selective when it comes to my bath/shower products. I’m never opposed to trying new things, but I know what I like and what I don’t like because I know what works for me- and what doesn’t. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this lightly fruit scented body wash, which is described as being able to improve skin’s texture, tone, and encourage good circulation while still being gentle enough for everyday use.

I can’t say much about improving my skin’s tone, texture, or my circulation- since it looks the same to me, but I did like the way this body wash made my skin feel squeaky clean without drying it out or leaving behind any kind of residue on the surface. The fragrance doesn’t last very long after the shower, but my skin feels nice all day after I use this.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. This is a quality body wash for sure- but nothing about it really struck me as extraordinary to the point where I’d feel like I had to run out and buy it immediately. I’d probably pick up a bottle as a treat to myself for when I travel (because hotel soaps are hit or miss,) since it does a good job at deeply cleaning and conditioning my skin, and doesn’t overpower me with fragrance.

January2014GlossyBox4

Product # 2: TONI&GUY Casual Sea Salt Texturising Spray ($14.99)

I don’t care if it’s the middle of winter and “beachy waves” in New England aren’t technically “in,” I love sea salt sprays and the way they make my hair look, regardless of the season. This fresh smelling spray softens my curls and gives my hair a little bit more volume without making it feel crunchy or dry- which is super important with curly hair since dryness usually accentuates frizz and/or split ends. I usually use Bumble & Bumble’s “Surf Spray” in the Summertime, but this is just as good. I’ve been spraying it into my towel-dried hair (see: still damp,) and letting it air dry to get the most desirable results. Best of all? It seems to be safe for color treated hair- which means no strawberry blonde ends for me!

Would I Purchase?: Yes! Again, sea salt sprays are one of my favorite hair styling products. They give me the “spent all day surfing” hair I love but can’t achieve without risking hypothermia from diving into the ocean this time of year.

January2014GlossyBox5

Product # 3: Vichy Aqualia Thermal Rich Cream ($31)

I was pretty excited to try a moisturizer that apparently gives 48 hours of continuous hydration, especially since some areas of my skin can be a bit dry and patchy in the winter. The first thing I noticed about this cream was that it had added fragrance to it- which immediately made me nervous since my skin can be sensitive at times, and anything with perfume in it is usually a one way ticket to breakout-ville. Thankfully, I haven’t had any kind of bad reaction to this moisturizer thus far- and it definitely keeps my skin soft and supple for hours at a time. It’s very rich, but it absorbs quickly into my skin and doesn’t feel greasy afterwards.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. While I’m getting decent results with this cream, the fragrance is still a cause for concern for me. I may not have experienced any kind of breakout yet, but there’s always the possibility. If this came fragrance-free, I’d buy it for sure.

January2014GlossyBox6

Product # 4: beautyblender.pure ($19.95)

While I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Beauty Blender, I’ve never actually tried it for myself. I’m a stickler for my makeup brushes, and truthfully, I just assumed the Beauty Blender was an over-hyped, overpriced sponge. I wasn’t expecting much, but decided to give this squishy white egg a whirl anyway. I followed the directions laid out on GlossyBox’s website (I also watched a couple of tutorials on YouTube just to play it safe,) and after wetting the sponge and having entirely too much fun watching it double in size with water- I got to work with applying my foundation- and wow.

I was pleasantly surprised with how well the Beauty Blender worked. Not only did it help me achieve good, even, and natural looking coverage quickly- but the tipped end made applying foundation around my nose and mouth a lot easier. Afterwards, I went to clean the Beauty Blender using the small bottle of cleanser that came with it, not entirely sure how well it would work considering past makeup sponge-cleansing attempts rarely ended well, but I was even surprised at the cleanser and how efficient it was. While my sponge does still have the faintest of foundation tint on it that wouldn’t wash out after a couple of attempts, it was nowhere near as bad or as messy as I thought it would be.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! While I still consider myself loyal to my brushes, this was a great product that I’d definitely re-purchase in the future. I got great results from this and I can absolutely see myself alternating back and forth between this and my foundation brush depending on how much time I have to do my makeup in the morning. Now I finally see why all the beauty bloggers and gurus rave about this thing.

January2014GlossyBox7

January2014GlossyBox8

Product # 5: Bellápierre Cosmetics Mineral Blush in “Desert Rose” ($20)

In the container, this loose powder blush looked a little dark- at least darker than what I’d normally wear on my cheeks, but it applied as a very pretty, very natural (and sheer) rose/peach tone with build-able color that I think will be my go-to in the Spring. I set this blush with my finishing powder and the final result was a flattering flush of pink in my cheeks. In the photo above, I’m wearing “Desert Rose” with my foundation, finishing powder, mascara, and a nude lip balm.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is such a beautiful color that blends really, really nicely and doesn’t give any unnecessary sparkle or sheen to my face. It lasts all day and feels nice and lightweight on my skin. I can easily see this becoming one of my favorite blushes in my collection.

Shipping issues aside, I was really pleased with January’s GlossyBox. Although I was on the fence about a couple of products, there wasn’t one that I disliked entirely. In fact, I was a big fan of most of them- which is always a good thing. I definitely got my money’s worth in this box, and I’m hoping they keep up the good work in February’s, too. This was a great way for them to start the new year.

Shiro Cosmetics: “Cages Through the Ages” Lip Gloss Set.

Comment 1 Standard

CagesThroughTheAges1

CagesThroughTheAges2

CagesThroughTheAges3

Every once in a while, I am introduced to a product or an independent brand that completely blows me away with their quality and creativity. The lovely Imogen recently introduced me to such a brand. Shiro Cosmetics is a 100% vegan, cruelty-free cosmetics company with eye shadows, lip colors, blushes, bronzers, and powders inspired by video games, television shows (the “Seven Kingdoms/Game of Thrones” collection looks gorgeous,) internet memes, and so on. Swatches shown on the site look rich and highly pigmented, and the price points are completely reasonable and affordable.

With actor Nicolas Cage’s 50th birthday taking place earlier this month, Shiro released a lip gloss collection depicting him in five different eras of American history. With names like “Nic Cage Churning Butter One Crisp Thanksgiving Morn” and “Nic Cage Doing the Charleston in a Bustling Speakeasy,” I couldn’t resist- and I ordered the whole set of five full-sized glosses for $35.

My package arrived shortly thereafter and included candy and a couple of eye shadow samples, “When the Thrush Knocks” from the “Hobbit” Collection, and “Gift of Mercy” from the GoT collection. Reviews of those can be found further down in this post!

CagesThroughTheAges4

CagesThroughTheAges6

Gloss # 1: “Nic Cage Churning Butter One Crisp Thanksgiving Morn”

“April showers bring May flowers. Mayflowers bring Nic Cage?

A gorgeous nude color, slightly on the sheerer side of medium coverage. We like to think of it as “Nicolas Beige.” Flavored like yummy honey! (vegan substitute, not the bees)” – (LINK)

I loved this sweet-scented nude color. It was very subtle on my lips- perfect for everyday wear. I think this is going to be my go-to for work or when I want a hint of shine without a ton of color.

CagesThroughTheAges17

CagesThroughTheAges18

CagesThroughTheAges19

Gloss # 2: “Nic Cage Nibbling Petit Fours in a Posh Victorian Tearoom”

“A Victorian tearoom is not to be confused with a Nictorian tearoom, which, rather than being an elegant tea-taking experience, is actually just a terrible pun for which I am very ashamed.

Moderately opaque dusty rose with a gentle pearl finish. Flavored with fancy pink frosting!” – (LINK)

Out of all the glosses, this one was my favorite scented and the closest match to the lip colors I typically wear. It’s a lovely rose shade that compliments my skin tone perfectly.

CagesThroughTheAges14

CagesThroughTheAges15

CagesThroughTheAges16

Gloss # 3: “Nic Cage Posing for a Calendar with Shiny Bright Red Cars”

“It’s a little known fact that National Treasure’s “Book of Secrets” actually referred to an extensive collection of Nic Cage’s glamorous pin-up shoots. The film, alas, took many creative liberties and covered up the whole thing.

Moderately opaque bright sports-car red, with a subtle pearl finish. Flavored like fresh cherry pie!” – (LINK)

Ever a fan of bright, cherry red lips- this gloss was one of my favorites in the set. It gave me a great pop of dramatic color and a beautiful shine. This looks great by itself, or over a red lipstick for extra “oomph!”

CagesThroughTheAges7

CagesThroughTheAges8

CagesThroughTheAges9

Gloss # 4: “Nic Cage Doing the Charleston in a Bustling Speakeasy”

“Won’t you Cageston with me?/And while the band is playing that/Nicolas Cage, around we will rage/Together we’ll show them/How the Cageston is done/We’ll surprise everyone!”

Moderately opaque fuchsia-mulberry. Will leave behind a faint stain. Flavored like bubbly champagne!” – (LINK)

I wore this plummy/wine colored gloss out to dinner with my girlfriends over the weekend, and like the description says, it does stain your lips- which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After an appetizer, an entree, a dessert, and coffee- my lips still looked full and dramatic.

CagesThroughTheAges10

CagesThroughTheAges11

CagesThroughTheAges12

Gloss # 5: “Nic Cage Getting Funky with that Saturday Night Fever”

“The invention of the disco ball came about one night after Nic Cage, at the tender age of five, accidentally sat on a mirror. The shards stuck to his bum and reflected the lasers which happened to be around, throwing off glorious scatterings of multicolored light which made everyone want to dance. Unfortunately, the name “Nicso ball” did not stick.

Super sheer purple with bright orange sparkle. Flavored like grape candy, Lip Smackers style!” – (LINK)

Although this gloss appears dark purple in the tube, it applied as a very pretty lavender/pink on my lips. The only downside to this particular gloss was the scent. I’m not a fan of grape-flavored anything, really- so when I applied this for the first time, all it reminded me of was children’s cough syrup/Tylenol.

THE VERDICT

These glosses gave a good amount of color and a beautiful shine. While you shouldn’t expect all-day wear with these (they aren’t lipsticks, after all,) the longevity is pretty impressive. I only had to re-apply a couple of times throughout the day as opposed to every hour, on the hour- which means I’m getting my money’s worth and not wasting any of the product (or my cash.)

I would like to point out that although the descriptions list these glosses as being flavored- they don’t have a taste- which is fine with me since I have a habit of compulsively licking anything flavored off my lips, anyway. These smell spot-on and absolutely delicious, though (except for the grape one, but that’s just personal preference!) and that’s just as good.

Overall I’m really pleased with this set. These glosses were a lot of fun to try and I’m excited to integrate them into my makeup collection. Plus, when someone asks what I’m wearing- saying the name of the color and showing off the hilariously decorated tube has been wildly entertaining.

Of course, I wanted to try the eye shadow samples, too:

CagesThroughTheAges13

Sample # 1: “Gift of Mercy”

“Maybe some real wolves will find you. Maybe they’ll smell you when the sun goes down. Then you’ll learn what wolves do to dogs.

Blackened plate-steel grey shot through with hints of orange fire. Lip-safe!” – (LINK)

I can’t get over how much I loved this color. While the loose shadow appeared jet black in the packet, which was admittedly a little intimidating to me, it applied on my lids as a really gorgeous dark grey with flecks of copper. This is PERFECT to create a unique smokey eye. In the photo above, I’ve applied “Gift of Mercy” over Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. No other colors were added/used.

CagesThroughTheAges20

Sample # 2: “When The Thrush Knocks”

“Then suddenly when their hope was lowest a red ray of the sun escaped like a finger through a rent in the cloud. A gleam of light came straight through the opening into the bay and fell on the smooth rock-face. The old thrush, who had been watching from a high perch with beady eyes and head cocked on one side, gave a sudden trill. There was a loud crack. A flake of rock split from the wall and fell.” – J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

Late afternoon sunlight: soft coppery yellow-gold with light shimmer. Lip-safe!” – (LINK)

Another beautiful, shimmery (but not TOO shimmery) copper tone. This applied beautifully and brought out the blue in my eyes. In the photo above, I’ve applied “When The Thrush Knocks” over Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. No other colors were added/used.

THE VERDICT

Just when I thought I couldn’t enjoy anything more than the Nicolas Cage lip glosses, these shadow samples completely blew me away. Like the swatches on Shiro’s website suggested- these loose shadows are highly pigmented. Even better? They didn’t budge. At ALL. The shadows stayed in place, just as I applied them, without creasing, flaking, fading, or becoming discolored as the day wore on. I was so, so impressed.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Consider me a life-long fan and customer of Shiro Cosmetics. I’m absolutely smitten with the entire line- from their wide array of colors and finishes to their clever names, descriptions, and packaging. I’m already picking out things for my next order- which will include a Dr. Who-inspired TARDIS blue eye shadow, among many other things.

xx

Ipsy Bag: January 2014 Review.

Comments 2 Standard

IpsyBagJanuary20142

IpsyBagJanuary20141

A new year and another 12 months of beauty box subscriptions! My bright blue Ipsy bag arrived in my mailbox recently, and although I knew in advance what I was going to be receiving thanks in part to my updated “Glam Room” on Ipsy’s official website, I was still pleasantly surprised by the size of the samples after I’d opened the bag and peered inside. This month’s theme is “19 Reasons,” for the 19 reasons to make 2014 an amazing new year. I’m not exactly sure why it’s 19 reasons instead of just 5, since each bag comes with only 5 samples- but I won’t nitpick.

What I Received:

Sexy Hair Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner

(MALIN+GOETZ) Mojito Lip Balm (*Full Size!*)

Elizabeth Mott Smooth Shadow in “Penny”

skiin Soothing and Smoothing Eye Cream

Proactiv+ Mark Fading Pads

IpsyBagJanuary20143

Product # 1: Sexy Hair Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner ($17.95)

I’m a big fan of the Sexy Hair line. From their shampoos and conditioners to their styling products and hairsprays. I consistently get good results that don’t damage my hair, fade my color, or make my scalp feel greasy (or dry.) I’ve seen this leave-in conditioner on display at my salon and had always been tempted to try it, but never actually got around to it- so I was pretty excited to be getting a decent sized sample of it in this month’s bag.

This spray is safe for color treated hair (awesome,) and is lightly scented- NOT overpowering (also awesome.) I apply it after my shower and let my curls air dry. My hair feels softer and healthier, but this leave-in doesn’t really do a lot for frizz control. I recommend using another styling product hand in hand with this so you get all the benefits this conditioner has to offer, as well as a little help in taming frizz and fly-aways.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is a really nice leave-in conditioner that’s loaded with good ingredients (soy and cocoa being the big ones,) that nourish the hair without weighing it down. I would absolutely purchase a full size of this to keep my hair healthy, shiny, and strong. Well done, Sexy Hair.

IpsyBagJanuary20144

Product # 2: (MALIN+GOETZ) Mojito Lip Balm ($12)

My lips take a beating in the winter. The frigid temperatures leave them dry, cracked, and sore- and God forbid I get sick. The common cold seems to amplify the horrible condition of my lips in the colder months. Chapsticks rarely work and many lip balms don’t last long at all- so I typically resort to slathering on the Carmex by the hour and hoping for the best. I didn’t expect much from this thick, clear balm (which does really smell like a mojito, by the way,) but I was pleasantly surprised at how non-sticky the texture was, how moisturizing it felt on my lips, and how long it lasted. Even after sipping my morning coffee and taking a few bites of a bagel- the balm didn’t budge at all.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. $12 is a little steep for such a small tube, but this stuff does work well, and if used sparingly, could last a while. Also, the only other downside to this product was the lack of applicator. My Carmex balm has a rounded tip that glides easily over my lips for a smooth distribution of balm, whereas this tube has a flat tip which requires applying the balm with my fingertip. It’s not the end of the world, of course- but it is a minor inconvenience.

IpsyBagJanuary20145

Product # 3: Elizabeth Mott Smooth Shadow in “Penny” ($14.99)

This may have been one of the most confusing samples I’ve ever received in a beauty subscription service. This teeny-tiny pencil is a fraction of the full-sized self-sharpening version, but this sample didn’t twist up- making it useful for only two, maybe three applications at the most. I can’t speak for the other shades this is available in, but “Penny” didn’t really show up at all on my lids. It was a very, very faint copper tone that may have been better suited as a highlighter instead of a shadow or an eyeliner. I was underwhelmed with this.

Would I Purchase?: No. Here’s the thing, if I had been given a little bit more of this sample, I could probably write a better evaluation (i.e.- how it works as a highlighter, as I just mentioned,) but I wasn’t impressed with the small amount I did receive. Although this product does glide on smoothly- the pigmentation isn’t all that great and it had creased and flaked off by mid-afternoon. I’ll pass.

IpsyBagJanuary20146

Product # 4: skiin Soothing and Smoothing Eye Cream ($29.95)

I consider myself fortunate that fine lines and wrinkles are not a concern for me yet,  but I still make a point to keep my delicate eye area as moisturized as possible. This lightweight, non-greasy cream is not just for fine lines and wrinkles, but is also supposed to decrease puffiness and dark circles, too. I used this every night before bed for a week, and while the cream absorbs quickly and left no residue or caused any kind of reaction- which is always a plus- apart from overall softness, I didn’t notice any distinct results.

Would I Purchase?: No. This cream wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t anything extraordinary, either. It did a well enough job at moisturizing my eye area, but I don’t think it’s something that I particularly need considering I get nearly the exact same results with the eye cream I’m currently using. This may be better suited for someone who has concerns with fine lines and/or dark circles as they may get more noticeable results than I did.

IpsyBagJanuary20147

Product # 5: Proactiv+ Mark Fading Pads (Price unknown)

Back when I was in high school, and my skin was at the mercy of stress and teenage hormones, I went on Proactiv in a desperate attempt to clear up some stubborn, painful breakouts along my t-zone. No sooner had I started using Proactiv when I had to stop. The 3-step system actually inflamed my skin, which caused even more breakouts. I haven’t touched the stuff since. Thankfully, my skin has calmed down considerably over time, so the prospect of trying this product wasn’t completely terrifying to me. I have a couple of very faint scars on my cheek from a past allergic reaction that are easily covered with makeup, but I wanted to see if these pads could lighten them even more than time and patience already had.

I received four pads, and by the time I used the last one- the scars hadn’t faded much. My skin felt pretty nice, though- and very clean- after each use. These pads didn’t dry my skin out or cause any kind of irritation, and I think they’d make a pretty decent makeup remover for those with oily skin.

Would I Purchase? Yes! I wouldn’t be opposed to taking a box of these when I travel for easy makeup removal or just as a quick and convenient way to deeply cleanse my skin after a flight/late night/etc. I’m not sure if Proactiv sells these pads separately, or if you’d have to purchase an entire kit to get them (their website doesn’t make shopping easy,) but if I ever see any in one of those kiosks or vending machines at the mall/shopping centers- I’ll more than likely pick some up.

Overall I was very pleased with my January Ipsy bag. I may not have fallen head over heels in love with every product I received, but I did enjoy most of them and I found a couple of good ones I’d definitely purchase in the future. This bag was such an upgrade from the December one- and I’m hoping February’s is just as good.

GlossyBoxDecember20132

As is the usual tradition when it comes to GlossyBox, I received mine near the end of December, and just recently finished playing around with the samples included. After a somewhat anti-climactic year-end Ipsy Bag last month, I was hoping that GlossyBox would make up for it with their holiday-themed box.

What I Received:

ARDENCY INN – “PUNKER” – World’s Baddest Eyeliner (*Full Size!*)

ANATOMICALS “You Need A Blooming Shower” Body Cleanser

NAOBAY Oxygenating Cream Moisturizer

Nails, Inc. “Victoria” Polish (*Full Size!*)

Michael Todd True Organics Pumpkin Nutrient Rich Facial Mask

Product # 1: ARDENCY INN – “PUNKER” – World’s Baddest Eyeliner ($19)

I received a similar marker style eyeliner by Be A Bombshell in an Ipsy bag a couple months ago, and even though I liked the concept, I was concerned about how long the liner would last in terms of not drying out over time since it’s not something that can be sharpened down or easily salvaged.

As far as this product goes- I really did enjoy this liner. The fine point made application incredibly easy, and I was able to go from subtle to dramatic with the flick of my wrist in little to no time at all. It lasts for hours (and hours!) without flaking off or smudging. Case in point: I wore this liner on New Years Eve under my masquerade mask, and even after sweating on the dance floor for hours, and the fabric from my mask rubbing against my face-  including my eye area on more than one occasion- my cat-eye was still flawless when I finally got back to my hotel room.

But again- the question of the marker possibly drying out with daily uncappings/re-cappings comes into question. Although my liner is still fresh, meaning it still has a slightly wet feel to it when I use it- I’m curious how long that will last.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. This liner really is a fantastic quality, but I’m cautious when it comes to the Sharpie-esque texture of this product. $19 is a lot to spend on a black eye liner, so I’d want to be sure I was getting my money’s worth and not wasting cash on something that may not last me more than a few weeks.

Product # 2: ANATOMICALS “You Need A Blooming Shower” Body Cleanser ($9.50)

I love ANATOMICALS’ products- the results I get when I use them, their more than reasonable pricing, and their cute and clever packaging. I was really excited to try this rose-scented (and pink!) body wash, since it smelled absolutely lovely in the neon colored tube. In the shower, this body cleanser lathered up really, really well- and it made my skin feel squeaky clean without drying it out or causing any kind of reaction.

Initially, the scent wasn’t overpowering the way some florals can be- but my only gripe is that it didn’t last long on my skin at all. No sooner had I dried off when it all but disappeared, which was a little disappointing.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. Although the fragrance-fading was a bit of a let-down, I still liked the other aspects of this body wash- especially how nice and clean my skin felt after I used it. I figure that feeling alone could possibly be worth purchasing a full-sized bottle- even if I won’t smell like a bouquet of roses for long.

Product # 3: NAOBAY Oxygenating Cream Moisturizer ($45)

The first thing I noticed about this lightweight moisturizer is that it smelled like a greenhouse, if that makes any sense. It’s made from plant extracts, which is awesome, but I really hadn’t expected it to remind me of vegetables. As far as hydrating my skin, I’ve been using it for a few days now, and I haven’t noticed any significant difference in how my skin feels or it’s tone and texture. It looks and feels the same as it did before I started using this product. The only thing I like about this particular moisturizer is that it absorbs quickly into my skin, and can act as a makeup primer- but my current foundation already has primer in it- so that’s not necessarily needed.

Would I Purchase?: No. For $45 a bottle, I wasn’t blown away by this moisturizer at all. It was pretty basic, and I’ve tried other creams (for a fraction of the cost) that have given me much better and more noticeable results than this. I’ll pass.

Product # 4: Nails, Inc. “Victoria” Polish ($9.50)

I have to apologize for how bad my nails look. I’ve decided to take a break from acrylics and gel manicures for a few weeks to give my tips a long overdue and much needed break, and the brittle, damaged ends are in the process of growing out.

I’ve received the “Baker Street” polish from Nails, Inc. in a past GlossyBox, and I loved it. This deep cherry red lacquer was no exception. The formula applies smoothly, dries quickly, and doesn’t chip or smudge easily. The color is beautiful- a perfect dark shade for the Winter- and it lasts a long time.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I received a full-sized bottle in December’s GlossyBox, and it should last me for a very long time, but I really love the color and the formula, so I’d probably re-purchase this one whenever I run out of it.

Product # 5: Michael Todd True Organics Pumpkin Nutrient Rich Facial Mask ($34)

I wish I had known about this product back when I compiled my “Autumn Essentials” post last year, because it’s the first and only face mask that I’ve ever tried that has smelled like a delicious pumpkin spice latte. This all-natural mask does a bit of everything: it unclogs pores, improves skin’s texture, and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. I applied a generous amount (and amused myself more than I care to admit with how it turned my skin into the color of an Oompa-Loompa’s,) and waited 10-15 minutes before rinsing it off. Immediately, I saw and felt how much smoother my skin was, and noticed that it had a bit of a glow to it. I can’t say much about whether or not it drastically unclogged my pores with just a couple of uses so far, but I’m hoping to see more definitive results in the coming weeks.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I think this was my favorite product in December’s GlossyBox. I loved this mask, and I would absolutely purchase a full-sized bottle. The results were great, it smells amazing, and it’s loaded with all natural ingredients that are actually good for my skin. I’m sold.

Much like Ipsy’s year-end bag, I wasn’t completely blown away with December’s GlossyBox. It wasn’t horrible by any means, but nothing- with the exception of the pumpkin mask- really impressed me. I’m hoping with a new year, both subscription services come up with some new, innovative ideas to really make their boxes/bags stand out among their competitors.
