Let’s get right to it, shall we?

What I Received (Chose):

YES TO Tomatoes Daily Pore Scrub

New York Streets Dry Shampoo

Mark. Hook-Up Lip Gloss in “Honey”

GG Gatsby “Raise Volume” Conditioner

Amlactin Moisturizing Body Lotion

COTZ Face Tint SPF 40

Product #1: YES TO Tomatoes Daily Pore Scrub ($9.99)

Back in February, I had given YES TO Carrots Body Butter a glowing review. Seeing another YES TO product available to try this month, this time a pore scrub, I didn’t hesitate to select it as one of my samples. The scrub, which didn’t smell too much like tomato (only a little bit, but it wasn’t grossly overpowering), was gentle enough on my face where it didn’t hurt to apply, and yet it was powerful enough that when I rinsed it off, my skin felt really smooth and exfoliated. I wish I had gotten a bigger sample so I could see the results over the course of a few days as opposed to just a one time only use, but I liked what I saw and what I felt, and I wouldn’t be opposed to trying it again.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This product is pretty inexpensive compared to other pore scrubs and exfoliators on the market, and as I mentioned, the results after just one use were impressive. I’d like to try to see if the results stay consistent with continued use, and I’d be willing to make the purchase to find out.

Product #2: New York Streets Dry Shampoo ($17.99)

Having hair as curly as mine poses an issue with dry shampoo, especially in the warmer seasons. A lot of dry shampoos I’ve tried in the past either make me look like I have dandruff (ew) by not absorbing properly and just being stubborn when it comes time to brush it through my hair, or they disappear almost instantly on my scalp and I’m left with hair that feels a little greasy. I’m selective with dry shampoos, usually sticking with my trusty Lush one, but I decided to give this aerosol dry shampoo a try.

I sprayed some of this product on my scalp, and immediately noticed that it turned my roots white- which wouldn’t be an issue except that it would NOT fade, even after excessive massaging and brushing. I eventually had to apply styling product on top of it, thus wetting the shampoo and pretty much defeating it’s purpose- and making my hair feel not very refreshed at all.

Would I Purchase?: No. This product was a dud for me. The one good thing was that it had a pretty scent to it, but I could get the same result- without the powdered wig effect, that is- from hairspray.

Product #3: Mark. Hook-Up Lip Gloss in “Honey” ($6.50)

I have an addiction to lip color that can’t be controlled or stopped. I’ve come to terms with it. I’ve accepted it. It’s part of who I am. I love to try all kinds, colors, textures, and finishes. I’ve heard good things about Mark. lip gloss, and seeing this pretty pink-ish, neutral tone up for grabs, I couldn’t resist.

MarkHookUpHoney1

MarkHookUpHoney2

One of the things that I loved about this lip gloss, apart from the flattering shade that’s perfect for everyday wear, was that even though it looked thick on the sponge applicator, it actually applied smoothly and didn’t feel sticky or tacky on my lips. It gave a great glassy shine finish, but it wasn’t as long lasting as other formulas I’ve tried. I had to re-apply shortly after I finished my morning coffee.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! Longevity downfall aside, this is a nice gloss with a decent and reasonable price tag attached to it. I’d love to see more shades!

Product #4: GG Gatsby “Raise Volume” Conditioner ($14.99)

In February, I also reviewed GG Gatsby’s “Raise Volume” shampoo. I was on the fence about it, since certain aspects like the color-safe formula and the scent were nice, but it didn’t quite give me the results it advertised. The same can be said about this conditioner. Like the shampoo, the scent to this creamy, light-weight formula was lovely, and it detangled and moisturized my hair without making it feel greasy- but I didn’t quite get the shine or the volume the packaging promised.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. I’m still a little indecisive about this brand and their products, since they seem to only make it halfway with their results. I liked this conditioner, but I wasn’t in love with it. However, the price isn’t obscene, which is definitely a plus and might weigh in on my decision to eventually purchase a full size bottle.

Product #5: Amlactin Moisturizing Body Lotion ($11.99)

I have a drawer full of body lotions, body butters, body oils, etc., but the exfoliating aspect of this body lotion caught my attention and I wanted to see what type of results I’d get with it. Advertised as being deeply and intensely hydrating, and for being capable of boosting cell turnover to promote radiant, glowing skin- I slathered some of this on after a morning shower and again before bed. While the formula absorbed into my skin quickly and didn’t feel greasy or leave any kind of film behind, I had a couple of reddened, itchy patches pop up a short time later, signaling a small, but noticeable reaction to the product.

Also, the lotion is fragrance-free, which is great for people with sensitive skin, but it seemed that the ingredients that make up the moisturizer developed a scent of their own, and in this case- it was sort of medicinal, like something I imagine you could find in a hospital ward.

Would I Purchase?: No. I’d pass on this one. The combination of the weird smell, the irritated patches on my skin after applying, and my skin not feeling all that hydrated was the deal breaker for me. I’ll stick to nicer smelling, less abrasive lotions and body butters.

Product $6: COTZ Face Tint SPF 40 ($19.99)

I swear by SPF, and I try to make sure it’s in everything I use- whether it be my facial moisturizer, BB cream, body lotion, etc. I have fair skin and I burn entirely too easy (my last accidental sunburn from a couple of years ago resulted in my missing nearly a week of work and almost being hospitalized for how severe it was), so I have to be careful and conscientiousness about sun protection. I decided to see if this tinted mineral sunscreen was worthy of praise.

When I first got a look at the color, I had a sinking feeling I was in for a messy situation. The shade was entirely too dark for my skin tone, so even after some of it had absorbed, I was left discolored, like I had dirt on my face, and had to apply my BB cream over it to conceal both the SPF tint and any imperfections it didn’t cover. Also, the texture, almost foamy in a way, wasn’t my cup of tea and made applying it evenly a little bit of a pain. On the plus side, it had a matte finish, and seemed to be long-lasting from what I could tell.

Would I Purchase?: No. The shade, which I believe is the only one this SPF comes in,  was too dark for my complexion, and the consistency made obtaining an even application a hassle. I’d recommend a creamier, un-tinted sunscreen to wear under makeup, or even a BB cream that has a decent amount of SPF added to it if you’re looking for sun protection and good coverage.

With the exception of the tomato pore scrub and the rose-colored lip gloss, this month’s box was kind of a let down. Admittedly, I’m the one choosing the samples for this particular brand of beauty box, but it seemed my options were sort of limited during my selection window. I’m hoping for a wider, more diverse selection of products to choose from in May.

My Spring Essentials.

2013SpringEssentials

Spring in New England is a funny thing. Some days are sunny, beautiful and warm (we hit 69°F at the beginning of the week), and other days are rainy, gloomy, and cold (we capped off at 37°F today, for example). With warm weather struggling to fight it’s way through the remnants of what has proven to be a harsh winter, I’ve compiled a list of seasonal products and items- some long-time favorites, and some newer discoveries- to help me prep for when the flowers finally bloom- much like my small “Winter Essentials Post” back in January.

OlayFreshEffects1

OlayFreshEffects2

1. Olay’s “Fresh Effects” Cleansing Brush System: This is a newer find for me. My lovely friend Imogen linked me to a beauty blogger’s YouTube review of this product one night while we were discussing Clarisonic skin-cleansing brushes, which although work wonderfully- are a little pricier than most people would feel comfortable spending. The review was a glowing one, so on a recent trip to the drug store, I picked up a package (retail value was about $15 USD) to try out for myself.

In the winter, my skin was pretty dry, but with temperatures rising and falling at the drop of a hat, and April showers aplenty, my skin is starting to lean towards being on the combination side this season. Olay’s rubber-bristled brush (which makes it so easy to clean) is small enough to fit into my palm, and is triangular shaped, allowing me to get alongside my nose and hairline with no difficulty. The cleanser, “Shine, Shine, Go Away” is a metallic colored cream that lathers up nice and doesn’t smell too perfume-y, which is a plus if you have sensitive skin like me.

I only use this brush at the end of the day, after I take my makeup off (I feel using it more than once may prove to be too drying), to give my pores a deep clean. After I rinse the lather off, I’m left with smooth, glowing skin that better absorbs my clarifying lotions and moisturizers. Even better? The brush only takes one AA battery to run and you can use any facial cleanser of your choice if you don’t particularly like “Shine, Shine, Go Away”.

BodyShopCoconutScrub

2. The Body Shop’s Coconut Body Scrub (6.9 oz for $20): My face isn’t the only thing I want to keep glowing and smooth in the Spring. I love wearing flowy, flirty dresses and skirts this time of year, which means I have to keep my legs and my arms looking polished and soft. This particular scrub is packed with nutrients, coconut milk, and coconut oil (which is one of the most versatile of the all-natural beauty miracle ingredients). Coconut shell and husk pieces that are mixed in help buff away imperfections and dead skin cells while the milk and oil conditions and moisturizes. I always feel so sparkling clean when I rinse this off- and it smells delicious, too!

GarnierSleekAndShine1

GarnierSleekAndShine2

3. Garnier Fructis Sleek Finish 5-In-1 Serum Spray ($5.99): This was one of those “stumbled upon by accident” products. I had forgotten to pack hair care products when I went to San Diego last month, and ended up stopping by a local pharmacy for some color-safe shampoo and conditioner that wouldn’t break the bank or potentially be a waste should anything happen during my travel/flying (like a spill, or a broken container, etc.) This spray caught my attention, and I grabbed some, having flat-ironed my hair and desperate to keep it shiny for a night out. It’s been a style-saver since, especially with Spring rainstorms being as unpredictable as they are.

The formula applies, tames frizz and holds down fly-aways like a typical aerosol hairspray, but the serum mixed in makes my hair very, very shiny- NOT greasy- and soft- NOT stiff. Best of all, I get the same result when I leave my hair natural and curly, too. This particular spray doesn’t just apply to those with straight or styled hair.

SpringFlingDresses

4. Flowy, Flirty Dresses: As I’ve said before, I love breaking out the softer colors and florals for my Spring wardrobe. The dresses pictured above, three of my favorites from ModCloth, are just a snippet of my style when the nicer weather peeks it’s head out. Short, ultra-feminine, and fun to accessorize- these are the types of frocks I covet for picnics, walks in the park, and afternoon shopping on the warmer weekends.

OPIBubbleBath

5. Pastel Polish: If winter is resilient, kind of like it’s being right now, and I can’t show a little leg in a dress without risking catching pneumonia, it helps to keep my spirits up if I at least have a pretty pastel polish on my nails to look at from time to time. My go-to color is O.P.I.’s “Bubble Bath”, a beautiful ballerina pink that can be played up in a variety of ways with other colors and designs. It’s just a lovely shade that goes with pretty much anything.

“Spring Essentials” Not Pictured: A good pair of nude colored pumps, my nude/light rose toned matte lipstick, a lighter, more floral perfume (Calvin Klein’s “Euphoria Blossom” has been my signature Spring scent for years now), a gym membership I can’t ignore anymore because “it’s too cold out” or “it gets dark too early” are no longer valid excuses, fresh cut grass or clean linen-scented candles to help freshen up your place and get you ready for Spring cleaning, and a relaxing playlist, fan, or earplugs to drown out the sounds of chirping now that the birds are back to making noise at an ungodly hour in the morning.

What are some of your “Spring Essentials”?

GLOSSYBOX: March 2013 Review.

March2013GlossyBox1

March2013GlossyBox2

A few days before I left for California, I received my March 2013 GlossyBox in the mail. I packed a couple of the samples in my suitcase to try while I was out West, and recently finished the others now that I’m back home. The theme for this month’s box, “Spring Fling”, revolved around products to help the transition from cold and bleak winter into the warmer, sunnier Spring season that seems to have finally arrived here in New England!

What I Received:

Sebastian Professional “Shaper Fierce” Hairspray

ModelCo Cheek + Lip Tint in “Rosy Red”

Elite Models Intensity Eye Pencil (Full Size!)

Prestiche Essential Oil Bar Soap

Koh Gen Do Oriental Plants Emollient Cream

I also received a $40 voucher valid for Prestiche’s online store, which I’m planning on applying towards one of their “Wonder Body Polishes”. With warmer weather on it’s way, that means I have to keep my skin exfoliated and smooth for when I break out the flirty dresses and shorter skirts.

Product #1: Sebastian Professional “Shaper Fierce” Hairspray ($17.00)

Curly hair + hairspray is a tricky combination. In some cases, hairsprays can smooth down frizz and help keeps curls defined. In other cases, they only succeed in making curls crunchy and weighed down. Over the years, I’ve found only a couple of hairsprays that have been lightweight enough to keep the bounce in my curls but still strong enough to tame any flyaway strands.

In January’s GlossyBox, I was introduced to Sebastian Professional’s “Potion 9” Styling Cream and had loved it- so I had my expectations pretty high when I received this spray that promised to not only give my hair a flexible hold, but would also add a “high shine gloss” effect as well.

Unfortunately, this spray was one of the crunch-creators, and no matter how many times I tried to brush or tousle my hair to break up the product, if only a little, it built up fast and dried heavy, making my hair and scalp feel anything but soft. The spray also smelled HORRIBLE. Seriously nauseating. I ended up feeling really self-conscious about how crunchy my hair looked and the way it smelled most of the morning after I’d spritzed some on before work.

Would I Purchase?: No. I’ll be sticking to the aforementioned lightweight sprays (one of which is made by Garnier Fructis and not only smells delicious- but makes my hair so soft and shiny) the next time I need a little extra hold. This stuff was just too heavy for me, and I can’t get over how bad the scent was.

Product #2: ModelCo Cheek + Lip Tint in “Rosy Red” ($24.00)

Considering how much I loved the cheek, eye, and lip tint cream I received in my March BeautyArmy kit, I was open to try this gel, packaged in a precision point tube, which claimed to give a natural, “freshly pinched” look to my cheeks.  Upon applying a couple of drops to my fingertips to tap onto my face, I was immediately concerned with how dark the color appeared. The only way I could describe it was that it had the same look and consistency of food coloring. When I began blending, however, the dark red faded into a rosy pink.

ModelCoTint1

ModelCoTint2

While the consistency was nice and very lightweight, it took a few more drops than I expected to get a noticeable flush to my cheeks- and even after that, the tint ended up making my cheeks look more like I had a patchy case of rosacea instead of a beautiful, natural blush.

My lips didn’t fare much better. Not only was the tint drying to the point of it being painful, but it didn’t spread evenly at all, and my pout looked chapped and dry.

ModelCoTint3

Would I Purchase?: No. As unique as the texture of the tint formula was, This product just didn’t work well for me at all. I’ll stick to my cream or powder blushes for my cheeks, and with more moisturizing colors and balms for my lips.

Product #3: Elite Models Intensity Eye Pencil ($14)

This soft, creamy pencil eyeliner applied like a dream, giving me an even, precise, and mess-free application along my upper lid. This particular brand is long-lasting and waterproof, but is formulated with Shea butter and vitamin E, making it safe and non-drying for the sensitive eye area- even after wearing it for hours. Although I experienced a little fading in the outer corners of my eyes as the day wore on, for the most part the liner didn’t budge and didn’t irritate my lids the way other pencil liners have done in the past.

EliteModelLiner1

EliteModelLiner2

Would I Purchase?: Yes! Absolutely!  This is such a quality product. It’s gentle and easy to apply, gives a great amount of color, stays in place all day, but comes off easily with no fuss with a basic makeup remover. I’d love to try more of these in different shades!

Product #4: Prestiche Essential Oil Bar Soap (16.99)

I’m sure I’ve mentioned before how much I love all-natural soaps. I don’t like putting anything loaded with chemicals on my skin, as I find it will either be extremely drying, or the complete opposite of the spectrum- and make me feel super greasy. This hypoallergenic soap, loaded with antioxidants, essential oils, moisturizers, and vitamins not only smelled wonderful, but lathered nicely, and made my skin feel so, so soft and conditioned without leaving any kind of oily residue behind.

Also, unlike some other all-natural soaps, this bar didn’t disintegrate after one use. I still have plenty left over to last me a while, meaning that this product also gives you your money’s worth, too.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I liked this soap the second I felt how silky it made my skin during the very first use- and how it stayed that way long after my shower. It’s made of really great ingredients, and should last a while.

Product #5: Koh Gen Do Oriental Plants Emollient Cream ($123)

For $123 a pop, I expected this botanical extract cream to be nothing short of a miracle in a jar. I applied it before bed, and hoped to wake up with a glowing, radiant, flawless complexion. The cream absorbed quickly, felt lovely, and didn’t have any artificial fragrances to it, which was definitely a plus- but I didn’t see or feel a significant difference to my skin, even after using it for another few days. It certainly didn’t do anything that any less-expensive creams couldn’t do.

Would I Purchase?: No. This cream, as nice as it felt, isn’t worth the money, in my opinion. There are so many other alternatives out there that could not only give me better results, but wouldn’t cost as much, either.

2 out of 5 products in the March GlossyBox were fantastic and were definitely things I’d purchase in the future. The other 3, not so much. I’d say the box was a bust, but the $40 Prestiche voucher was a pleasant surprise and definitely made up for the lackluster hairspray, cheek + lip tint, and moisturizer.

BeautyArmy: March 2013 Review.

Leave a comment Standard

BeautyArmyMarch2013

I’m taking a break from packing my suitcase for an early flight I’m catching tomorrow morning to the West Coast for a long weekend getaway. I recently finished the trials in my March 2013 BeautyArmy box, and wanted to post my reviews before I move on to the samples I received yesterday when this month’s GlossyBox arrived at my door.

What I Received (Chose):

SKYN ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels

INEKE Hothouse Flower Perfume

Immuno-Viva “Sunset” Tea

Whip Hand Cosmetics, Loose Pigment Eyeshadow in “Green Beret”

SKINN COSMETICS Color Touch Eye, Cheek, & Lip Glow in “Teen Tone”.

GRAND CENTRAL BEAUTY Skin Perfecting Polisher

Product #1: SKYN ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels ($30.00 for 8 pairs)

I’m weary of putting any kind of firming/anti-aging cream or gel near my eyes. I rarely stray from my “Vaseline around the eyes at nighttime” routine, as I’ve mentioned in the past, but these cooling eye gel pads caught my attention, and most of the reviews I read were extremely positive, so I decided to break with tradition and give them a shot. I received one pair of the pads, and applied them earlier tonight while I was going through my itinerary of what to pack for my trip.

The pads were mess-free, which was automatically an improvement from the Vaseline regime, and they stayed in place after I pressed them onto my skin. The directions on the package said to leave the pads on for up to ten minutes. I decided to live dangerously and keep them on for 15 before removing them, and even now I can still feel the tingling, cool sensation that started almost immediately after the application. Around my eyes looked firmer and smoother, and felt soft to the touch. I was, and still am, impressed!

Would I Purchase?: Yes! The price for these pads is a little steep, especially just for eight pairs, but they aren’t something someone like me would use every day. They’d be perfect for having after a long, exhausting day, or for packing in your purse for an emergency pick-me-up before going into a big meeting at work or for freshening up before going out for a night on the town.

Product #2: INEKE Hothouse Flower Perfume ($95.00)

This perfume, advertised as being “highly addictive” (and thus making me want to see/smell it for myself), was pretty potent when I first spritzed some on the insides of my wrists. Smelling strongly of florals, musk, and a hint of citrus, it was powerful, but gradually weakened as it blended with my skin. What I was left with was a lightweight, more musky scent. Unfortunately, it didn’t last like other fragrances I’ve used and tried in the past, and within a few hours, it had all but faded completely.

Would I Purchase?: No. The scent was lovely, but the longevity could use some improvement. I like my fragrances to last so that I don’t have to frequently reapply them throughout the day, but this one just all but disappeared a little too quickly for my liking.

Product #3: Immuno-Viva “Sunset” Tea ($11.95 for 20 teabags)

In February’s BeautyArmy box, I had tried the Immuno-Viva “Sunrise” tea and really enjoyed it. I saw it’s counterpart, the “Sunset” tea, available, and wanted to see if I liked it just as much. Like “Sunrise”, this white tea is packed with antioxidants to help boost immune health and concentration. Unlike “Sunrise”, however, which is supposed to energize and awaken, this blend is made to naturally relax and help support a more restful sleep.

Taste wise, this tea was a little bland. It wasn’t strong, which to me, is a good thing- but I felt it could have used a little something extra to give it’s flavor a kick. Maybe a hint of vanilla, or even mint. I’m sure it’s nothing a little extra sugar couldn’t take care of, but adding sugar to a nighttime relaxation tea just seems a little contradictory to me.

“Sunrise” tea hadn’t made me feel anymore energized or alert than usual, but the “Sunset” tea did seem to relax me quite well. Granted, I was drinking it in bed, wrapped up in fleece blankets, and was pretty tired to begin with, so there’s a good chance there were some other contributing factors that assisted in my overall sleepy feeling, but I’ll go ahead and give the tea all the credit.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I’m sure there are ways to boost what is otherwise a pretty blasé flavor, but this is a good, light, end-of-the-day tea, and it’s filled with natural ingredients that are good for you, too.

Product #4: Whip Hand Cosmetics, Loose Pigment Eyeshadow in “Green Beret” ($11.90)

Also in February’s BeautyArmy box, I had tried Whip Hand Cosmetics’ “Medal of Honor” loose pigment eyeshadow, and had loved it’s shimmer and long-last wear. I wanted to check out other shades, and when I saw that this green shadow was available, I jumped at the chance.

Upon applying this shadow over my primer, two things were clear right away: 1. the color appeared more grey than green, and 2. I needed to use a lot of it since I could absolutely NOT get it to spread evenly over my eyelid. Once I got the shadow as even and as dark as I could, and blended it a little, the finished color wasn’t bad- but it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, either.

GreenBeretShadow1

GreenBeretShadow2

Would I Purchase?: No. As much as I loved “Medal of Honor” last month, this product was a let-down. I have other green eyeshadows in my makeup collection that are more vibrant and easier to apply than this particular one was. I’ll stick with those and pass on “Green Beret”.

Product #5: SKINN COSMETICS Color Touch Eye, Cheek, & Lip Glow in “Teen Tone” ($17.00)

The second I ran my finger across the top of this creamy 3-in-1 makeup and began applying it to the apples of my cheeks, I was smitten. This lightweight formula, in a beautiful, natural looking rosy shade, applied like a dream and stayed put almost all day- giving me a glow throughout my workday and well into the evening.

My only problem, and this usually happens with most multi-purpose makeups like this, is that while the color was gorgeous on my cheeks and my eyes, it looked a little chalky when I applied it on my lips. It also went on to dry my lips out pretty bad, and I eventually had to wipe it off and apply a different lip color.

TeenToneColorCream

Would I Purchase?: Yes! Despite the bad result I got with my lips, this product was gorgeous everywhere else I applied it. You don’t need a lot of it, either- which means that it’ll last you a long time.

Product #6: GRAND CENTRAL BEAUTY Skin Perfecting Polisher ($38.00)

I wasn’t entirely sure what this product was or how it was used until it arrived in my box and I had the chance to review the directions and feel the texture. I don’t know how many of you have ever been badgered by mall kiosk people (the people who have booths in the middle of the mall who always try to stop you so they can show you some overpriced miracle beauty/haircare product that never works quite as well when you get it home as it did when they were applying it or using it on you), but this reminded me of a mask I tried once in my late teens after being stopped while I was doing some shopping.

To use this product, which feels almost like a serum and less like an exfoliator, you apply it to your face, and then massage it in for about 30 seconds to a minute. After that, you’ll feel dead “skin cells” begin to roll away. From there, you can either rinse or pat your face with a towel, and your skin is supposed to look and feel more exfoliated, radiant, and  toned.

While my skin did feel a little tighter after I tried this product a few times, I didn’t notice a visible difference in my skin’s texture or tone, and it certainly didn’t feel any more exfoliated than it does when I use a scrub or a clarifying lotion.

Would I Purchase?: No. I’ll stick to my usual pore cleansing scrubs and moisturizers to obtain a smooth, toned texture. This product just seems like a waste of money for something that can be achieved with other, less expensive products.

So 3 yes products, and 3 no products. I’d say my March 2013 BeautyArmy box was a pretty even turn-out.

And now I’ve got to finish packing.

See you all in sunny San Diego!

GlossyBoxFebruary2013

GlossyBoxFebruary20132

GlossyBox once again surprised me this month, just as they did last month, by sending me an additional box free of charge. I’m still not exactly sure why, but no complaints here! The extra samples are perfect to travel with and to give to my friends who are curious to try new products.

This month’s theme, “International Style”, focused on Fashion Weeks around the globe, and featured products inspired by jet-setting models, designers, and fashionistas from NYC all the way to Milan. I finished trying the samples over this past weekend, and can now give a full and proper review.

What I Received:

Evologie’s Esystem Duo Pack Intensive Blemish Serum & Stay Clear Cream

LiSi Liquid Line Eyeliner in “Enchanted”

Nail Rock Nail Wraps

Bvlgari Eau Parfumée Au Thé Blanc Soap

Da Vinci Shimmer Powder in “Twilight”

Product # 1: Evologie’s Esystem Duo Pack Intensive Blemish Serum & Stay Clear Cream ($15.00)

Upon receiving this product and reading it’s description, I decided to incorporate both the cream and the serum into my daily skin care regime to see if I noticed any improvements to a couple of little blemishes that popped up in what I’ve dubbed “pre-PMS misery”. Sorry to any guys reading this, but it’s just a part of life and nature. Deal with it.

Anyway, while I noticed the serum did indeed help reduce redness and the size of said blemishes, the cream all but completely dried the rest of my face out. I applied it as directed, and almost immediately my skin felt tight and uncomfortable. I had to apply another oil-free moisturizer on top of it just so my makeup wouldn’t look flaky or patchy.

Would I Purchase?: It’s a maybe for the serum, since I feel it would come in handy for those one or two pimples that pop up (and usually at the most inconvenient of times), but absolutely not for the cream. It was way too drying for me.

Product #2: LiSi Liquid Line Eyeliner in “Enchanted” ($7.00)

I’m not a fan of liquid eyeliners at all. I’ve never found one that really works for me in terms of staying power and clean, neat, simple application. My trademark eyeliner look features a mild cat-eye, so I typically stick to gel-cream liners, since they stay in place the longest and are easier to apply and blend. I also use pencil liners, although with those, more often than not, I find I have to make sure my cat-eye doesn’t end up bleeding down to my cheek throughout the course of the day/night.

Even still, I gave “Enchanted” a try. A lovely purple color, it was a pain to apply. It just seemed I couldn’t get it off of the applicator and onto my eyelids evenly, and I had to go over it about three times total to cover areas that the first swipe of the liner missed completely because it wouldn’t spread.

LiSiEyelinerEnchanted

LiSiEyelinerEnchanted2

The picture above was taken minutes after I finished applying the liner. I wore it out for the night, and when I came home to wash my face before bed, I noticed that almost all of it had flaked off. I was left with uneven, purple, patchy sections along my lid. So disappointing!

Would I Purchase?: No. I’ll stick to my gel-cream liners. Even though the color was pretty, this eyeliner was sort of cheap. It was a pain in the ass to apply, and it didn’t even get me through the night without fading.

Product #3: Nail Rock Nail Wraps ($8.00)

I was actually really excited to try these press-on foil wraps. They come in a variety of funky color combinations and patterns. The ones I received were split, half cheetah print-half bright red, which worked out well since it was a near perfect match to my current nail polish  Not wanting to overdo it, I decided to put the pattern on only my ring fingers. As meticulous and as careful as I was applying the foils, they still crinkled up along the edges of my nails, which kind of sucked and required a lot of buffing and filing- but even that still didn’t get the foil completely smooth.

Despite that, they are pretty cool looking, and are advertised as being designed to last up to ten days. I’m on day three right now, going into day four, and even after showers, rifling through my purse, and a lot of typing, they haven’t budged. Priced at only $8, I’m impressed.

NailRockNailWraps

NailRockNailWraps2

My apologies for my kind of icky cuticles in that photo. I’m in need of a manicure.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I don’t think I’d wear them on every single one of my nails, but they’d be a lot of fun to mix and match with different nail polishes, and they definitely stand out. You can’t beat the price, either, especially since they seem to have staying power (so far!)

Product #4: Bvlgari Eau Parfumée Au Thé Blanc Soap (30.00)

First, the good- this soap made my skin feel amazing. Even before I got out of the shower, I could feel a difference. My skin was soft and very, very silky, and it stayed that way long after I got out of the shower and dried off. The soap lathered up pretty well, which gave me an allover clean feeling, too- also a perk.

Now, the bad- I feel like I’m in the minority when I say this, since I’ve seen people raving about this soap in their reviews for the very reason I was put off by it- but I didn’t like the way it smelled. At all. It was just too much for me, to the point of it being kind of gross, and I ended up spritzing a little perfume on after my shower to try and cover it up.

Would I Purchase?: No. As wonderful as my skin felt, $30 is a lot of money for something that I couldn’t stand the smell of. I’d be better off putting that towards a lightly scented body lotion or body butter if I wanted the same moisturized, silky feeling, but without the overpowering aroma.

Product #5: Da Vinci Shimmer Powder in “Twilight” ($15.00)

I was a little nervous about applying this golden-toned shimmer powder to my face, worried that it would make me look too bronzed since it appeared to be on the darker side in the container, but I was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful glow and subtle shimmer it gave me after I brushed some on my cheekbones as a highlighter and on my brow bone.

DaVinciTwilight

Me030213

The shade of this powder isn’t just limited to the “Twilight” shade, either. There’s quite a variety- from nudes, to pinks, to plums, so depending on your skin tone and personal preference, you can find a color that suits you!

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I loved the shimmer, which isn’t overpowering and actually stays in place unlike other shimmer powders and blushes I’ve tried in the past. This is a great product for cheeks and eyes, and can serve as an easy to carry substitute for eye shadow and blush, especially when you’re traveling and simply don’t have the room to carry a bunch of compacts, jars, or tubes around.

Two loved products, two not-so-loved products, and one I’m still on the fence about. I may not have been as blown away by the February GlossyBox as I was with the January one, but I had fun trying everything, and I discovered some new brands and products I’d love to experiment with more in the future.

BeautyArmy: February 2013 Review.

Comment 1 Standard

BeautyArmyFebruary2013

I received my February Beauty Army Box last week, and just finished using the last of the samples this morning. I had significantly more luck with this box than I did with the January 2013 one, thanks in part to my researching the samples that were available to me before I selected them.

What I Received (Chose):

GG Gatsby “Raise Volume” Shampoo

YES TO Carrots Super Rich Body Butter

Olive Natural Beauty Bar – Lemon & Lavender Bar

Immuno-Viva “Sunrise” Tea

Whip Hand Cosmetics, Loose Pigment Eyeshadow in “Medal of Honor”

Mighty Tea Leaf “Vanilla Bean” Tea

Product #1: GG GATSBY “Raise Volume” Shampoo ($14.99)

This sulfate-free shampoo was advertised as not only being capable of giving my hair intense and long-lasting volume and fullness, but also a “mirror like” shine. The formula smelled lovely, like a floral perfume, but it didn’t lather up well. Maybe it’s just me, but the lack of suds made me wonder if it was really doing a well enough job at cleansing my hair.

Upon rinsing, my hair definitely felt smoother and silkier, Once I let it dry, I didn’t really notice a difference in volume or fullness, but this could also be attributed to my curls being big and wild anyway, even when I’m not using any kind of volumizing shampoo, conditioner, or styling product. If someone has straight or typically “flat” hair, they may notice more of a difference.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. I liked that the shampoo was sulfate-free to protect my locks from losing their red luster, I liked the scent, and I liked how soft my hair felt after I used it, but I don’t know if it necessarily made up for the difficulty in getting it to lather up in my hair. I want to feel like my hair is being thoroughly washed, not like I’m simply adding more product to it.

Product #2: YES TO Carrots Super Rich Body Butter ($12.99)

I was a little skeptical about slathering anything on my body that had the word “carrots” in it’s name, but I was delightfully surprised with how nice this smelled. Texture wise, this is more of a lotion than a body butter, since it’s so lightweight- but it spread easily and absorbed quickly into my skin without leaving a greasy residue. There wasn’t much in the pouch I received, so I focused on applying what I had in problem areas I typically have in the winter: my elbows, knees, and ankles. My skin stayed soft, smooth, and hydrated all day and well into the night.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I loved how this product made my skin feel. It was so much lighter in terms of the formula and the fragrance compared to other body butters I’ve tried.

Product #3: Olive Natural Beauty Bar – Lemon & Lavender ($10.00)

I’ve been fiercely loyal to the all-natural, Vermont-based soap company, Scentastics, for a couple of years now, but I decided to try something new and selected a sample of this 100% organic soap.

I could actually smell the citrus notes in this soap before I even finished removing the tissue paper from the box. It was strong, but it smelled fresh and clean. I also thought the packaging was really cute:

TheOliveNaturalBeautyBar1

TheOliveNaturalBeautyBar2

The soap was really rich and hydrating, and my skin felt moisturized long after I showered, which was nice. The only downside, as is with most organic soaps that aren’t loaded down with chemicals, is that is wears down and melts away very quickly. My sample was gone after just the one wash, so it should be used sparingly if you want to keep it for a longer period of time without having to repurchase right away.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I still love my Scentastics soaps, but I wouldn’t be opposed to picking up a bar of this sometime.

Product #4: Immuno-Viva Sunrise Tea ($11.95 for 20 teabags)

I’m a coffee girl, and have been for a long time, but I wanted to give this energizing morning tea a try to see if it did the trick to get me going for the day. A mixture of white, green, and black teas, this fruit & cinnamon flavored blend is supposed to boost immune health, fight free-radicals, and improve concentration.

It tasted sweeter than other teas I’ve tried, which was nice, but I didn’t feel particularly more awake or alert, and ended up grabbing my usual coffee by the afternoon to keep me going.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! Even if I wasn’t exactly energized, this tea tasted good, and would be a nice substitute on the mornings when I don’t want to be completely hyped up on caffeine.

Product #5: Whip Hand Cosmetics, Loose Pigment Eyeshadow in “Medal of Honor” ($14.00)

I have blue eyes, and there are a couple of colors I can wear that really make them pop. For example, purples and golds. The name of this gold/copper, shimmery eye-shadow caught my attention (it comes from a special edition collection with military themed names), and seeing that it was highly pigmented, I decided to give it a shot.

I used a gold tinted primer, and then applied “Medal of Honor” all over my lid and up to my crease. I did not add any additional colors or shadows. It was definitely bold and bright, and lasted all day, only starting to fade in the late hours of last night/early this morning.

WhipHandMedalOfHonor

My only gripe with the shadow was the container. Loose powder shadows are messy, which is why I prefer pots of them as opposed to tubes, since you can control how much you get on your brush and any shadow left over isn’t wasted. The directions on “Medal of Honor” say it’s best to pour some of the shadow into the cap, which I tried to do, but it ended up going everywhere anyway, and the bit of shadow that I didn’t use was so difficult to get back into the tube that I ended up throwing it away.

Even still, a little goes a long way with this shadow, and as small as the sample was, I feel like I have enough of it left to use for a while.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I loved the color, and I’d really like to try some of the other shadows in this collection.

Product #6: Mighty Tea Leaf in “Vanilla Bean” ($9.95 for 15 Pouches)

I must have been in a tea mood when I selected my samples for this month, since choosing the Sunrise tea seemingly wasn’t enough for me. I selected this black loose leaf tea, fused with vanilla bean bits and kept in a cute, silken pouch, and hoped for the best. I’d had good luck with the Sunrise tea the other morning, and thought I’d have a similar experience when I brewed this tea earlier today.

Unfortunately, this tea was very bland, even after I added a bit of milk and sugar to try and perk up the flavor. It didn’t taste bad, but it was very boring, and I couldn’t detect a hint of vanilla in it at all, which was disappointing.

Would I Purchase?: No. This was the only sample I received this month that I’d definitely pass on buying in the future.

Overall, I enjoyed this month’s box, and was pleased to discover new brands and products that worked well for me. As I had said in the beginning of this entry, this box was a considerable improvement compared to the one I received in January. Here’s hoping I have the same luck in March!

GLOSSYBOX: January 2013 Review.

Leave a comment Standard

GLOSSYBOXJanuary2013

Along with BeautyArmy, I also recently subscribed to the monthly Beauty Box service, GLOSSYBOX, after hearing glowing reviews about it. A few dollars more than BeautyArmy, but similar to it’s service, GLOSSYBOX sends you deluxe sized samples every month based on the results of a series of questions about your skin & hair type, color, and personal preferences when it comes to cosmetics and style. Unlike BeautyArmy, however, you don’t pick the samples, so you never know what you’re going to get. I like good surprises like this, though- and decided to go for it.

I had placed my order at the very beginning of January, right after New Years, and had grown increasingly worried when, as the end of the month drew near, I still hadn’t received my shipment. I apparently wasn’t the only one, either, because GLOSSYBOX contacted me about the delay. They’d simply needed to replenish their product due to overwhelming demand, and would ship it out A.S.A.P. To make up for it, they credited my account with 50 GLOSSYDOTS, which are points that are accrued and can be used towards obtaining a free GLOSSYBOX.

My box arrived the other night, although I didn’t just receive one, but two– free of charge! Talk about awesome customer service. I gave the extra box to my cousin, Paige. Let’s take a look inside, shall we?

GLOSSYBOXJanuary20132

GLOSSYBOXJanuary20133

This month’s GLOSSYBOX teamed up with Leandra over at The Man Repeller to create a box of Winter essentials.

What I Received:

Estée Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara*

Fresh Umbrian Clay Mattifying Serum

Le Métier de Beauté Replenishing Daily Solution

Narciso Rodriguez Eau de Toilette Spray (For Her)

OPI Liquid Sand Nail Lacquer in “Can’t Let Go” (Full Size!)

Sebastian Professional “Potion 9” Styling Cream

Tarte Glamazon Pure Performance 12-Hour Lipstick in “Fierce” (Full Size!)

*What I Didn’t Use:

Estée Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara

Why Not: As I had mentioned in my January BeautyArmy Box post, I’m dedicated to my Dior mascara. We’re in a committed relationship. I’ve tried Estée Lauder mascaras in the past, and wasn’t particularly blown away by them. This sample was given to someone else who was interested in trying it.

But on to what I did use!

Product #1: Sebastian Professional “Potion 9” Styling Cream ($19.00)

The second I pumped some of this orange tinted, citrus-scented styling cream into my hand, I knew my hair was in for a treat. The product was lightweight, easy to work through my hair, and didn’t dry crunchy or greasy. It made my hair soft and defined my curls for an all-day hold. I also liked that I didn’t have to use a ton of the product to get my desired look, which means I’d be getting my money’s worth if I bought a full-size bottle of the product (5.1 oz.)

SebastianPotion9

SebastianPotion92

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is one of the few hair creams I’ve tried that I liked. It worked well with my curls, and it smelled really, really good.

Product #2: Fresh Umbrian Clay Mattifying Serum ($35)

This serum, perfect for the skin dulling winter, helps to not only clear out acidity from the pores, reduce their size, and control shine, but it purifies and clears your complexion as well. I applied this serum after my oil-free moisturizer to prevent my skin from drying out. It felt nice and spread evenly- not sticky or greasy or overtly drying despite having clay in it, and my skin felt comfortable all day as I wore it. It did a fine job reducing shine, although I think I can achieve the same result from my mineral finishing powder, which is the same price as a 1 oz. container of this.

Would I Purchase?: It’s a maybe for me. I think if I ever wanted to stop using my mineral finishing powder, this would be a decent alternative to switch to in order to keep my skin shine-free, but I wasn’t necessarily in love with it.

Product #3: Tarte Glamazon Pure Performance 12-Hour Lipstick in “Fierce” ($26)

Red lips are a bold, ballsy look to try, and I bow down to any woman who wears it with confidence and wears it well. With my complexion, red lipstick is a hit or miss, and honestly- my misses when I attempt the look far outweigh my hits with it. Some reds look too orange, others wash me out, some reds make my teeth look discolored, and some just make me look like The Joker. I’ve settled on lip stains if I want a red lip; demure, but pretty.

When I opened the packaging to this Tarte Lipstick, twisted the color up through the cute, quirky wooden container it’s nestled in, and saw the color, nearly neon red- I was ready to re-cap it, set it back in it’s box, and back away from it slowly- but something stopped me: I’m bold. I’m ballsy- and damn it- I was going to wear that color, wear it proud, and really give it an earnest attempt- even if I ended up looking like The Joker (again.)

I kept the rest of my makeup subdued and natural looking, since I wanted my lips to be the focal point. If there’s one thing I learned in my teens, it was that bright red lipstick + a dramatic eye = MESS. SUCH A MESS.

The lipstick was blindingly bright the second it touched my lips, but I finished the application, and upon getting used to it, I actually kind of liked it. It didn’t feel waxy or drying, the way some other long-lasting lipsticks do. My only gripe was that when I went to lightly touch the corners of my lips to even out my look, the lipstick stained my fingertips and it WOULD NOT COME OFF EASILY. Other than that, though- I was impressed.

TarteFierceLipstick

I even felt confident enough in the color to run some errands. While ordering a coffee during a stop, a guy who was waiting in line behind me complimented my lips, stating that it made my eye color really stand out.

I’m just glad he didn’t ask me “why so serious?”

Would I Purchase?: I don’t know if I’d do the “Fierce” red again, but I would definitely check out some of the other “Glamazon” colors that Tarte has to offer. They really are long lasting (my lips aren’t as red as when I first applied the color, but they’re still red regardless- even after a coffee and dinner), and comfortable. Perfect for a long day at work or a night out. No reapplications necessary!

Product #4: Narciso Rodriguez Eau de Toilette Spray ($77)

I’m very particular when it comes to my perfumes. In the Spring and Summer, I tend to wear light floral, citrus, crisp and clean scents, and in the winter, I go a little heavier, a tad more wooded and spicy, with light spritzes of my Chanel or Prada perfume. When I first dabbed a little of this Narciso Rodriguez scent on, it smelled more like a man’s cologne than a wintery perfume, but as the day wore on, and it lightened a bit, the floral scent that enveloped me was a welcomed change. It smelled pretty, and feminine, and stayed with me for most of the afternoon.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I think once I run out of my usual winter perfumes, this would be a lovely addition to my collection. It definitely grew on me.

Product #5: OPI Liquid Sand Nail Lacquer in “Can’t Let Go” ($9)

I won’t lie- I actually gasped when I unwrapped this GORGEOUS and glittery dark purple nail polish from the box. I have acrylic nails that were due for a little maintenance this weekend- so seeing the bottle made my color decision a lot easier.

Part of the “Liquid Sand” collection, the color is more matte than shiny, and the texture, as the name implies, is grainy- but it still looks beautiful once it dries:

OPICantLetGo

OPICantLetGo2

Would I Purchase?: Absolutely. I love OPI and their colors, and this is no exception. It’s beautiful, and adds a perfect pop of color to my winter wardrobe.

The only product I haven’t tried yet is the Le Métier de Beauté Replenishing Daily Solution, which I plan on using tonight before bed after I wash and exfoliate my skin. Judging by the other samples I’ve tried from this box, I have a feeling I’ll like it.

Everything in the January GLOSSYBOX was well thought out, put together nicely, and fun to try- even the things I wasn’t sure about at first, like the Tarte lipstick and the Fresh mattifying serum. Well done to GLOSSYBOX (especially for their above and beyond customer service), and to Leandra over at The Man Repeller for picking out some seriously good stuff!

Last night I caught a set by London’s finest, The Vaccines at what I feel is the best venue in the city, The ‘Dise (Paradise Rock Club). They’re brilliant, and probably some of the sweetest and funniest guys around. The show was great, and loud. My ears are still ringing a little, but it was a blast.

The show was my first with my new camera in tow. I’m still getting the hang of using it since it’s a lot more complex than past cameras I’ve owned. I like the shots above, especially the ones that feature Árni’s 1970’s California surfer-style hair. I’m used to taking photos of abandoned buildings or cosmetics for reviews, however, so I tried to snap some pictures of the boys in the same manner- but abandoned buildings and cosmetics don’t flail rapidly or jump around a stage when you’re trying to shoot them, and since The Vaccines do pretty much everything but stand still for long moments at a time- it definitely proved to be a challenge.

I learned a few new things about my camera, and about photographing a show with it in the process that I’m looking forward to utilizing for the next gig, though. Practice makes perfect, after all.

BeautyArmyJanuary20131

Speaking of photographing cosmetics, I recently received my first beauty box from BeautyArmy. For those of you who aren’t familiar with BA, it’s a monthly subscription service where for $12 per month, you can select 6 samples of various skin care/cosmetic/wellness products from a collection that is specifically fitted to your skin/hair/personality type after you answer a quick but somewhat detailed questionnaire about yourself and the type of physical features you have. My co-worker is a big fan of it, and urged me to try it since she knows how much I love experimenting with new things. I finally caved, and received my carefully wrapped pink and black box a couple of weeks ago- plenty of time to play around with the samples.

BeautyArmyJanuary20132

What I Received (Chose):

Ruddy Water Blushed Fragrance Pouch

Egyptian Magic All-Purpose Skin Cream

Bath & Body Works “Sweet Pea” Shower Gel*

Jonathan “Dirt” Texturizing Paste

EnSpri Ultra Collagen 5-Minute Facial

Yes To Blueberries “Age Refresh Eye Firming Cream*

Mark Scandi-Lash Mascara (in brown)* (BONUS SAMPLE)

*What I didn’t Use:

Bath & Body Works “Sweet Pea” Shower Gel

Why Not: I have so many bath and shower products that I don’t even know what to do with them all. As much as I love the “Sweet Pea” scent, this was something I picked to give to my mother.

Yes To Blueberries “Age Refresh Eye Firming Cream

Why Not: I’m a stickler when it comes to certain regimens, my eye care being one of them. My grandmother on my mom’s side used nothing but a little Vaseline around her eyes before bed time every night and she always looked amazing. She swore by it, and for the past few years, it’s become my own routine as well. My pillowcase might look a little greasy in the morning, but my eye area is still smooth and bright. I chose this sample, again, to give to someone else to try.

Mark Scandi-Lash Mascara (in brown)

Why Not: I don’t think I’ll ever be able to give up my Diorshow Black Out mascara. It just makes my lashes look exactly how I want them to without irritating my eyes. Like the Bath & Body Works shower gel, this sample was for my mother to try. Where I use the blackest of black mascaras to obtain a dramatic look, my mother is more reserved with brown, natural looking mascara.

Product #1: EnSpri Ultra Collagen 5-Minute Facial ($99.50)

One of the selling points to me trying this facial was that it was not only suitable for all skin types, but that it would soften my skin and shrink my pores. The packet is perforated, dividing the collagen powder and the gel hydrator activator. The directions on the packet state you need only mix the powder with the activator, apply to skin, wait until it dries, rinse, and voila! Insta-soft skin.

However, when I tried it, two things became clear very quickly: the powder packet contained, in my opinion, a little too much powder, and there wasn’t nearly enough activator to get the two to mix evenly. My bathroom counter ended up looking like Tony Montana’s desk in “Scarface”.

TonyMontanaDesk

The other thing that became clear was that this product smelled HORRIBLE. I mean gag-worthy. It was supposed to be less harsh than other masks, but it smelled strongly of burning chemicals.

When I did manage to apply enough of the product, as grainy and uncomfortable as it was, and waited until it dried to rinse- I didn’t feel or notice any dramatic improvement in my skin’s tone or texture. It just felt like I’d exfoliated a little bit, and the gross smell lingered on my face, much to my dismay, long after washing the mask off.

Would I Purchase?: No. I’d just stick to a daily scrub to achieve the same feeling. It’d be cheaper, smell better, and probably be less messy, too.

Product #2: Jonathan “Dirt” Texturizing Paste ($26.00)

I honestly don’t know why I picked this product considering I have medium-length and very curly hair. I’ve been told glues and pastes are for shorter hair, but I thought I’d give this a shot and see how it worked.

The product smelled like vanilla cake, which was a nice change from the Godawful collagen mask’s smell, but the texture was VERY dense and hard, making it difficult to work through my curls. I added a little water, hoping that it would spread a little easier, but to no avail. My hair didn’t look as “volumized” as the product description suggested it would, as much as it looked stringy and lifeless. I ended up giving up and resorting back to my usual cream and serum to get my bounce back.

Would I Purchase?: No. For shorter, straighter hair, this product might work really well, but it’s not for me at all. It does smell delicious, though.

Product #3: Egyptian Magic All-Purpose Skin Cream ($37.20)

I had mentioned in my Winter Essentials post that my skin is sensitive and can be problematic. I saw this moisturizer available, and upon reading it’s description, saw that it was suitable for all skin types. Throwing caution to the wind, I decided to say to hell with it and give it a try. The instructions were simple enough- rub the moisturizer into your palms until it turns into an oil for easier absorption, and then apply. I opted to try this product before bed to give it a chance to sink into my skin.

I cleansed my face as normal, used my toner, and tore open the packet. The second I started spreading it over my palms, I knew I was in trouble, because I’d never felt anything so unbelievably oily in my life. The product didn’t smell bad, but it didn’t smell good, either. Even still, I applied only a small amount to my face- but it still made me ridiculously shiny and made my skin feel greasy to the touch like I’d dived head first into a deep fryer at a fast-food restaurant.

This is a product that should NOT be applied during the day because of it’s consistency. I can’t imagine makeup staying in place if this stuff is slathered on your face. It’d just make it run.

I slept in it, and when I woke up the next morning, I will admit that my skin had a bit of a nice glow to it. It didn’t necessarily feel more hydrated than usual, but the texture and the tone looked a little more fresh and radiant.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. I think for a weekly hydrating treatment, especially in the winter, this would be really great- but I couldn’t imagine using it every day (or every night) simply because it’s just so greasy.

It would also make a great cuticle cream, too.

The only thing missing from this list is the Ruddy Water Blushed Fragrance Pouch, which I haven’t had the chance to try. I plan on reviewing it once I do. The pouch is currently in my gym bag, and will more than likely be opened after my next work-out.

Overall, I was a little underwhelmed with the box- although it’s mainly my fault since I selected the samples. Hopefully next month they’ll have some stuff that works a little better for me.

My Winter Essentials.

Leave a comment Standard

January Thaw is pretty much over, as evidenced by the ridiculously bitter cold temperatures we’ve hit the past few days. Venturing outside for more than a few minutes at a time has been a challenge, and lately I’ve been timing just how quickly I can sprint from my front door to my car, my car to my office, etc. without my lips turning blue.

Thankfully I’ve been introduced to some products that have made this winter a little more bearable and have given me a leg up with preventing chapped skin, cracked lips, greasy hat hair, and seasonal blues- and I thought I’d share my arsenal!

WinterEssentials2013CliniqueMoistureSurge1. Clinique’s Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief: (1.7 oz., $37.00, clinique.com):  For as long as I can remember, I’ve had oily, sensitive, and often problematic skin. I’m prone to redness, breakouts, and shine- and I had grown to accept the fact that I would forever need oil blotting sheets and the strongest toners and exfoliants imaginable. It was a way of life and I had adapted to it.

So imagine my surprise when my esthetician, Barbara, who has been familiar with my skin since I was a teenager, determined my skin was actually quite dry during a recent routine facial. I had thought my skin was beyond hydrated. I use an oil-free moisturizer, and have never experienced any sort of tightness, save for immediately after I use a scrub on my skin, and I drink what I thought was plenty of water daily.

But the elements of this frigid season had dried my skin out (and I’m sure my coffee addiction doesn’t particularly help, either), and I turned to an old friend, Clinique, for help. Moisture Surge is an oil-free, fragrance-free gel that you apply after your regular moisturizer to give your skin a boost in hydration. It helps smooth out fine lines, flakiness, and tightness- without clogging your pores. I’ve been using it twice a day, every day, for a couple of weeks now and I’ve already seen and felt a dramatic improvement to my skin’s texture and tone. *

DrJartBBCream

2. Dr. Jart+ Black Label Detox BB Cream (1.5 oz., $36.00, sephora.com): I’ve worn foundation since I was 19, and I’ve tried so many different brands and types over the years that I’ve lost track- but the product, no matter who makes it, is always difficult to stick with. It either clogs my pores, or slides right off, or changes color on my skin after a while (I’ve turned jaundice yellow a few times), or simply does not give me the coverage I need.

I’ve heard people raving about BB creams over the past couple of months, and had been tempted to try them, but was concerned with not getting the right amount of coverage, or worse, having a reaction and breaking out.

Enter Dr. Jart+ BLDBBC. This balm feels amazing and lightweight on my face, gives great coverage while it evens out my skintone, offers SPF protection and antioxidants to help gradually strengthen my skin over time, and detoxes my skin from impurities caused by free radicals such as pollution or bacteria.

Like Moisture Surge, I’ve been using this product for a couple of weeks, and have not had to apply foundation once. My skin looks radiant, even after I take it off for the day! *

NiveaMilkAndHoneyBalm

3. Nivea’s Pure & Natural Milk and Honey Lip Balm ($2.49, most drug stores): My lips are a mess in the winter. They crack, they peel, they’re red and feel like they’re on fire, and my only solution when I’m not smearing chapstick and Vaseline all over them is to desperately try to cover the damage with a heavy, waxy lipstick.

So, while perusing balms at a drug store recently after I’d forgotten my chapstick at home and needed some quick relief, I came across Nivea’s Pure & Natural collection- and the milk and honey balm caught my attention. It was cheap, and I decided to give it a whirl- and boy, am I glad I did. This lightweight balm smells delicious, and is soothing on contact. It also stays in place, so constant reapplications aren’t necessary. It helped heal my lips in a matter of days, and my pout and pucker has never looked better in the middle of January!

NoDroughtDryShampoo

4. Lush’s “No Drought” Dry Shampoo (1.9 oz., $6.95, lushusa.com): I wear a lot of hats in the winter (1. because it’s cold here, and 2. I love hats), and while they look cute when I’m out and about on the town, my hair underneath is a different story. Overwashing my hair, in any season, dries my scalp out- but spacing out my shampooing causes my curls to tread the fine line between “glossy” and “grimy”. This is a problem I notice especially in the winter, and typically right after I take my hat off. Product build-up in my hair coupled with sweating in a wool cap adds a level of oil to my locks that’s hard to get rid of.

Lush’s “No Drought” Dry Shampoo helps take care of it. Massaging a little bit of this citrus smelling powder into my scalp, and brushing it through to my ends, absorbs excess oil and sweat, but keeps my hair really soft and manageable. I like to keep a bottle of it in my bag for after I wrap up a work-out session at the gym or for touch-ups at work before I meet with clients of co-workers.

“Winter Essentials” not pictured: My deliciously rocker-chic “Simply Vera” Vera Wang snow boots, my $5 CVS brand sunblossom hand cream (the cold and gloves make my hands so dry and itchy. This hand cream is a lifesaver, is easy to carry, and smells wonderful), my brightly colored spa socks, my ever growing collection of fleece blankets, and my red velvet cake flavored instant hot cocoa mix.

What are some of your “Winter Essentials”?

* NOTE: While nearing completion of this entry, it was brought to my attention that some of the companies listed use testing procedures for their products that go against my ethical beliefs. I do not condone, nor would I ever condone, testing cosmetics on animals. I kept the reviews as they were as I wanted to give an unbiased account of the results I experienced from said products. Following this entry, I will be looking elsewhere for similar products to achieve similar results, but from companies that do not test on animals. *
