Thanksgiving20135

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I spent mine at my mom’s house with some of my family, stuffing my face (the serving set-up pictured above) until I could barely move. Afterwards, I was provided with enough leftovers to last me a good week or two, so I don’t think I’ll need to go grocery shopping anytime soon.

I can’t believe we’re heading into December, and that 2013 is almost over! Time really does fly when you’re having fun. November was probably my most laid-back month of the year. I spent a lot of low-key, quality time with friends and family, worked overtime more than once at the firm, and didn’t venture too far from home. I suppose it could be considered the calm before the storm that is the holiday season- with Christmas shopping, traveling to see loved ones and exchange gifts, festive parties, and then preparing for New Years.

I had a couple of ambitious efforts in November, namely my spur-of-the-moment/last minute decision to participate in my first NaNoWriMo. I came nowhere near the set 50,000 word goal due to time constraints and my own poor planning, which was disappointing- but there’s always next year- and I’m determined to be more prepared for it when I try again.

December, as it undoubtedly is for most people, is looking to be a very busy month, and although I’m not a fan of the single digit temperatures or hazards that come with the snowstorms which typically plague Massachusetts this time of year (and for the next few months, God help me,) I am, however- looking forward to Christmas. The music, the decorations, wrapping gifts for friends and family, watching “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” and the “Home Alone” movies, etc. Last year’s Christmas was a bit non-traditional, what with it being the first without my father and everything- so it’ll be nice to recreate some of the holiday magic I’d missed while I was trying to adjust.

I’m ready to get into the Christmas spirit, excited to share my holiday-related adventures, and although I’ll be sad to see it go since it’s been tremendous and pretty amazing so far- I’m hoping to end 2013 with a bang and welcome 2014 with style.

Autumn is Awesome Tag!

Leave a comment Standard

Even though we’re in the midst of the season’s last death rattles, and that familiar Winter chill has already crept up on more than one frosty morning in recent weeks, it’s still technically Autumn. The lovely Imogen over at Imogen’s Typewriter tagged me in this quick questionnaire, “Autumn is Awesome!” to bid farewell to what is no doubt my favorite time of year.

1. Favorite/least favorite thing about Fall?

There are so many things I love about the Fall that it’s hard to choose just one. Halloween, the cool, crisp weather, the fashion- but I’m going to go ahead and say that my absolute favorite thing is the fall foliage. Some people who have grown up in, or who have lived in New England for a long time tend to become so accustomed to the leaves changing color every year that over time it loses it’s luster- but I still get as awestruck as ever whenever I see the first flickers of reds, oranges, browns, and golden yellows on the trees.

My least favorite thing about the Fall would have to be Daylight Savings Time and losing the sunlight so early in the day. By the time I leave my office during the week, it’s dark out, which is a bit of a downer.

2. Favorite clothing item for Fall?

Big, cozy sweaters, and fluffy scarves! You’ll rarely see me out and about in the Fall without them. I love to pair them with a simple pair of skinny jeans and comfortable boots. It’s my go-to chic, classic Autumn look for everything and anything- from running errands to a casual night out with friends.

3. Favorite makeup trend for Fall?

Deep red/wine colored lips. I wish I could wear it year-round without looking too vampy, but it suits me very well in the Fall/Winter.

4. Favorite fall food/drink?

I think my favorite fall food would be apple crisp or anything pumpkin flavored- like pumpkin muffins or pumpkin bread.

My favorite Fall drink is hands down salted caramel lattes/hot chocolate, followed closely by warm apple cider.

5. Fall TV show premiere you are/were looking forward to most?

It should come as no surprise to anyone that it was The Walking Dead! I was practically counting down the seconds until the season premiere in October, I was so excited.

6. Favorite Fall tradition?

Fall2012ApplePicking

Brookfield Orchards, 2012.

Every Autumn I love to bundle up and go to the orchards out in Western Massachusetts to spend an afternoon picking apples and pumpkins, drinking cider, going on hay rides, and browsing antiques. I usually go with friends, or with my mom, or even by myself- and it’s always a nice, relaxing time with a beautiful view of the picturesque scenery.

For this particular series of questions, I tag anyone reading this who wants to participate before we head into December! Just let me know if you do, and I’d be more than happy to see what your answers were!

Lastly, I hope everyone celebrating Thanksgiving this year has a phenomenal one (and also, Happy Hanukkah to my Jewish friends! Thanksgivukkah? Hannukiving?) I’m spending the day with my mom and some of my relatives. I’ll see you all when I wake up from my turkey/tryptophan food coma.

Friendsgiving20135

Every year around this time for the past few years, my friend Stef rounds up our ever expanding circle of friends for our annual “Friendsgiving” dinner at her apartment, which is basically a huge Thanksgiving-style meal- sans blood-relatives- before we all get swept up in the inevitable stress and mayhem that is the busy holiday season. Everyone brings a dish or two (I was on apple and pumpkin pie duty this year,) a bottle of wine and/or beer- and we all sit down together at a long table, stuff our faces, and nine times out of ten- get a little tipsy. This year’s celebration was particularly poignant, however, since it was Stef’s last Friendsgiving in her longtime apartment. She’s moving into a new condo elsewhere in the city this coming weekend.

It’s a tradition I look forward to every year. In my teens and up until my early twenties, my friends and I were inseparable. We spent pretty much every day together, mornings and well into the later hours of the night. Of course, as we got a little older, some of us started careers that demanded more of our time and attention, others started families that demanded even more of those things- and others moved away- some a town or two over and some across state lines. As we settled into adulthood, our daily adventures became more of a weekly/monthly sort of thing- so to be able to sit down, all together, and enjoy good food and each other’s company without worrying about our everyday responsibilities for a few hours- is truly a wonderful, and very fun thing.

Friendsgiving20136

Not wanting to be overdressed for what is typically a casual affair, I wore leggings and my new favorite oversized “festive” t-shirt, courtesy of HUMAN. Stef loves Hall & Oates, so I thought it would be appropriate. Unfortunately, it was freezing last night, so the additional layers were necessary.

Thanksgiving is, of course, a time to give thanks, and although I’m a couple of days early, let me take the opportunity to say how thankful I am for my friends- whether it be my life-long ones I spent time with last night, to the ones I see occasionally or the ones I don’t see nearly as often as I’d like, to those who live far away and/or overseas, or to the ones I talk to online almost every day about anything and everything- from Sephora addiction, to terrible horror movies, to how adorable Tom Hiddleston’s overall demeanor is, or to how traumatic this season of “The Walking Dead” is turning out to be.

And even to the friends I haven’t met yet- I’m thankful. I truly am. They all, YOU all- have helped me through so much in recent months and over the past couple of years with unyielding love, support, and humor- and there aren’t enough words or space on this blog of mine that could ever properly convey my gratitude. I cherish and love my friends, near and far, more than anything in this world. I am thankful for many, many things- but to be blessed with such good friendships is definitely at the top of the list.

GLOSSYBOX: November 2013 Review.

GlossyBoxNovember20131

GlossyBoxNovember20132

This is one of first times in recent memory where I’ve received my GlossyBox kind of early. Typically, it arrives at my door during the last few days of the month, leaving me to write a review a little late. I’m hoping this is a continuing trend- since I’m a tad impatient when it comes to receiving my Beauty Boxes.

This month’s theme is “Holiday Romance,” and features products to get those of us in colder climates looking and feeling flawless throughout the chillier months- from smooth, polished skin, to hydrated, healthy hair, all the way to bold and dramatic colors for the eyes.  I’ve been playing around with what I received for a few days now, and am eager to share the results.

What I Received:

The Aloe Source Jojoba Radiance Cleansing Polish

Mastey Color Protection ‘Color Protecting Leave-In Oil Treatment’

Vincent Longo Duo Eye Pencil (*FULL SIZE*)

Nicka K New York Professional Eye Shadow Brush (*FULL SIZE*)

Emite Makeup Micronized Eye Shadow in ‘Dams’ (*FULL SIZE*)

GlossyBoxNovember20133

Product # 1: The Aloe Source Jojoba Radiance Cleansing Polish ($30)

Come November/December, my skin regime gets switched up a bit. My usual cleansers, typically for oily skin, get put aside to make room for more mild formulas since my face- especially in New England where I frequently go between the bitter cold outdoors to the often overly-heated indoors (usually in my office-) has a tendency to get a little dry. The first thing I noticed about this sulfate-free cleanser was how delicious it smelled, like a combination of different citruses. The second thing I noticed was the texture. This cleanser is loaded with jojoba microbeads that gently exfoliated my skin without stripping it down. Lastly, I noticed how much softer and smoother my skin felt after each use. This product is like a two-in-one, a gentle facial wash and an even gentler scrub.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I loved the results I got with this cleansing polish. It buffed my skin painlessly and thoroughly cleansed my face without over-drying it. Plus, it smells yummy. The price is a little steep, but a little goes a long way, so if you use it sparingly- it will last you a long time.

GlossyBoxNovember20134

Product # 2: Mastey Color Protection ‘Color Protecting Leave-In Oil Treatment’ ($25)

I’ve been soaking my hair with coconut oil a couple of times a week as an overnight/rinse-out treatment, and have seen phenomenal results from my scalp to my ends. I was curious about this leave-in oil, however- created especially for those with color treated hair- and I have been using it before styling as usual for the past few days. The oil itself is 100% vegan and free of harmful, drying, or color-fading chemicals. Another pro to this formula is that it doesn’t feel greasy to the touch, despite being an oil- and it smells strongly of berries, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s actually nice. My hair may not have been as frizz-free as I would have liked, but it looked so shiny and felt so soft after I applied the oil, and it stayed that way all day.

Would I Purchase? Yes! I think this would be a great extra step to add to my hair styling routine in the morning. This product, combined with my coconut oil treatment, means shinier, smoother, and more importantly- healthy hair- around the clock. Much like the jojoba cleanser I received, a little of this product goes a long way. A nickel-sized drop, give or take, should be enough to massage into your scalp and work down to your ends- and that’s coming from someone with impossibly thick hair.

"Rich Topaz"

“Rich Topaz”

Product # 3: Vincent Longo Duo Eye Pencil ($26)

Just when I was starting to come back around to being open to using pencil liners, I tried this duo eyeliner from Vincent Longo and was immediately put off of them again. Although this particular pencil was advertised as being the type to glide on, and, I quote: “prevents any tugging of the delicate eye area,” it was actually quite painful to use. Neither end of the liner applied easily, or evenly- and scratched my lids even when I wasn’t pressing down harder than I would have liked to get it to show up. As for the colors, the lighter shade- ‘Aura Chic-‘ barely showed up on my lids. It was a slightly shimmery flesh color that could be a beautiful highlighter for darker shades of skin, but on me, it just looked transparent. The darker shade, ”Rich Topaz,’ was a deep brown with no shimmer that showed up better than the lighter shade, but was still nothing WOW!-worthy. The only good thing about this liner, in my opinion, was that it was long-lasting. It stayed in place from morning until late at night without smudging or fading. Overall, though- it was disappointing.

Would I Purchase?: No. The colors, and especially the brutal application process- were hardly worth the costly price point of this liner. I’ll stick to my Urban Decay pencils and gel liners, which last just as long, are much more pigmented, and are less painful to apply.

GlossyBoxNovember20138

Product # 4: Nicka K New York Professional Eye Shadow Brush ($5)

I’ve mentioned in the past that I’ve had the same makeup brushes for years. They’ve held up well through months and months of different products, color combinations, and sometimes questionable makeup choices. I tried this lightweight round eyeshadow brush recently just to see how it felt, and I was immediately impressed with how soft the bristles were on my eyelid (it’s made from pony hair, which may explain it.) My shadow applied neatly in just a couple of sweeps.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. If I was ever looking to replace any or all of my brushes sometime in the future, I would definitely consider this brand since they seem to be well-made and durable, and for the price- which is a lot more reasonable than other brushes I’ve seen of similar quality- you can’t go wrong.

GlossyBoxNovember20139

Blended with Urban Decay's "Mildew" shadow.

Blended with Urban Decay’s “Mildew” shadow.

Product # 5: Emite Makeup Micronized Eye Shadow in ‘Dams’ ($27)

I was pretty anxious to play around with this black matte-finish eye shadow when I heard it’d be included in this month’s GlossyBox. I love a good smokey eye look in the winter, but black shadows I’ve tried in the past have had a lot of glitter/sparkle to them, sometimes making them hard to blend and resulting in them flaking down along my cheekbones throughout the course of the day/night. I’ve been blending this shadow with greens, golds, and purples to create dramatic and different looks- and I’ve been happy each time. The shadow is definitely dark and highly pigmented, so be sure to blend if you use it to avoid raccoon eyes- but it stays in place for all day/night wear and doesn’t flake all over the place.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! Although I think this black shadow will last me for a lifetime and a half (you don’t need a lot of it at all to create an effective smokey eye,) I’ve found a couple of other colors in Emite’s collection that are really, really pretty that I wouldn’t be opposed to taking a chance on purchasing- especially if they have the same pigmented, long-lasting formula as ‘Dams.’

Three products I enjoyed, one I liked but wouldn’t purchase just yet, and one Godawful eyeliner. Overall, November’s GlossyBox was a good one. I had said it after reviewing Ipsy’s November bag, too- but I’m looking forward to seeing what GlossyBox has planned for their final box of 2013!

Ipsy Bag: November 2013 Review.

NovemberIpsyBag20132

I had gushed about how much I enjoyed October’s Ipsy bag, with three (maybe four) of the five products and samples I received being absolutely awesome. I figured such an impressive value would be hard to beat, but I’m happy to report that November’s bag, with a “Glam It Up” theme, was just as- if not more- fun to try and play around with.

What I Received:

Be A Bombshell Lip Crayon in ‘Hot Damn’ (*FULL SIZE*)

Starlooks Gem Eye Pencil in ‘Topaz’ (*FULL SIZE*)

BH Cosmetics Baked Eyeshadow in ‘Aphrodite’

Em Cosmetics: Lip Gallery Creamy Color Sheer Lipstick in ‘Nude’ (*FULL SIZE*)

NovemberIpsyBag20134

Product # 1: Be A Bombshell Lip Crayon in ‘Hot Damn’ ($14)

At first glance, this fire engine red lip crayon looks like it’d be intimidating to wear. It’s definitely bright and it’s more than bold. I’ve said before that those two traits are typically right up my alley when it comes to cosmetics, but I’ve also said that red lips can be a tricky thing for me. Too dark can mean looking washed out, and too bright can mean looking like a circus clown. It’s hard to find a happy medium that compliments my skin tone. ‘Hot Damn’ actually applied as more of a reddish-pink, which was a relief, and was quite pretty, suitable for the colder months and coming holidays- but the formula was unfortunately a bit drying. It also began to fade after about an hour or so, the pigmentation of the initial color eventually turning to a deep pink stain on my lips that lasted for another hour, give or take- before vanishing completely.

Would I Purchase?: No. I look for three things in lip color: pigmentation, longevity, and hydration for my lips. While this crayon had pigmentation, however brief- the overall finish and texture left a lot to be desired.

NovemberIpsyBag20135

NovemberIpsyBag20136

Product # 2: Starlooks Gem Eye Pencil in ‘Topaz’ ($14)

I was admittedly a little excited when I saw the color of this eyeliner, although I’m not particularly fond of the harder pencil ones. A beautiful, sparkly metallic silver, ‘Topaz’ glided on easily and pain-free with no scratching or irritation to my eyes. I blended a thin line across my upper lids, and immediately saw how much brighter it made them look. The liner stayed in place all day without fading or smudging, but I did see a little bit of the sparkle had ended up underneath my eyes by the end of the night- although it was barely noticeable. Apart from that, which wasn’t a big deal at all, I was pleasantly surprised.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I loved this formula (a first for a hard pencil liner,) and I loved the color. This is a beautiful, long-lasting liner to have for the holidays that would look wonderful with festive and sparkly party dresses and accessories.

NovemberIpsyBag20137

Pre-blending. This is the 'Aphrodite' color after just one swipe of my brush.

Pre-blending. This is the ‘Aphrodite’ color after just one swipe of my brush.

Product # 3: BH Cosmetics Baked Eyeshadow in ‘Aphrodite’ ($14.95 for complete palette)

Although it was beautiful in the packaging, I wasn’t sure how ‘Aphrodite,’ a deep, shimmery rose with a touch of violet, would actually look on my fair skin. I applied it in the morning before work, and was quite pleased with how it stayed in place all day without fading or flaking down onto my cheeks- but the color wasn’t flattering on me at all. Instead of looking rose/violet, the shadow appeared a bit more reddish/somewhat orange-y on my lids- making me look like I had an unusual case of pink-eye.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I wouldn’t purchase ‘Aphrodite’ again, because the color just didn’t look good on me at all, but I have to give credit where credit is due. I really enjoyed how long-lasting and mess-free this formula was. I’d be more than happy to try a different, more complimentary shade in the future.

NovemberIpsyBag20139

NovemberIpsyBag201310

Product # 4: Em Cosmetics: Lip Gallery Creamy Color Sheer Lipstick in ‘Nude’ ($16.50)

Each of November’s Ipsy bags featured a product from Em cosmetics, the new makeup line from Ipsy founder and YouTube personality, Michelle Phan. I saw the ‘Nude’ lipstick in the tube and was really looking forward to trying it because of how lovely it looked. As it’s name implies, the shade was a very subdued, every-day nude/pink that was nearly identical to my natural lip color. It looked as though I’d applied a clear lip balm at first since the sheer formula isn’t very pigmented at all. The texture of the lipstick was also similar to a balm- very smooth and very creamy. My lips felt soft and glossy. The only downside to this lipstick was how quickly it disappeared. No sooner had I applied some of this to my lips when I had to re-apply less than an hour later, and then again less than an hour after that, and so on.

Would I Purchase?: No. It sucks to say it, because the color, while sheer, was nice enough, and the texture of the lipstick felt wonderful- but I could get longer lasting color, with similar moisturizing results, at half the price of a tube of this- with drug store brand lipsticks or lip balms.

NovemberIpsyBag201311

Product # 5: Pixi Beauty Bronzer ($18)

I’m overtly cautious when it comes to bronzers. Some appear too dark on my skin and many more turn orange after I’ve applied them, which is never a good look. I’ve been content with my Laura Mercier powder bronzer for quite some time now since it’s one of the more natural tones I’ve come across, but when I saw this Pixi bronzer (in the lightest shade possible) in the package, I wasn’t immediately frightened away. It looked light enough for my complexion and there wasn’t any shimmer to worry about. I gave it a shot- and I was very, very happy with the results. This bronzer gave me a hint of color, was in no way overpowering, and didn’t appear orange on my skin. It looked like I had the most subtle of tans, and it helped to highlight my cheekbones. I’m impressed.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is just one of those products that works really well for me. It gave great results with no weird reactions (breakouts, irritation to the skin, etc.) I think my favorite aspect of it was how natural it looked. I don’t like a lot of shimmer on my face, and this bronzer had a lovely matte finish which complimented the rest of my makeup. I’m sold.

Product # 6: Nailtini Straight Up Color Nail Lacquer in ‘Champagne’ ($13)

I can never have enough nail polishes. I’ve been sporting a subtly-sparkled pewter shade for the past week and a half, but when I opened the box for this lacquer, I couldn’t wait to switch. ‘Champagne’ is, as you guessed- a champagne color. With a shimmery pinkish/nude/kind of gold hue, this polish glided on easily and dried to a beautiful finish in just two coats (and a top coat to seal it in place.) Much like the ‘Topaz’ eyeliner I received in this month’s bag, this shade is perfect for the upcoming holidays since it will compliment any outfit.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I really liked the formula to this polish, and the color is absolutely gorgeous. I have a wide variety of reds, pinks, and corals in my lacquer collection, as well as some brighter colors like yellows, purples, blues and greens- so it’s nice to have a beautiful nude shade to add to the mix for when I want long-term wear that won’t clash with my wardrobe or makeup selections.

With October and now November’s Ipsy bags being really, really well put together (even if I wasn’t completely in love with everything I received,) I’m excited to see what they’re planning for December. With it being the holidays and the end of the year, I’m hoping that they pull out all the stops.

Liebster Award: Part II.

Comment 1 Standard

LiebsterAwardBack in May, I was nominated for the Liebster Award, an honor passed among bloggers around the globe as recognition for stand-out content and writing, and useful to reach out and connect with other bloggers and readers. I have a lot of fun creating entries for “Legally Redhead,” and I hope that those who follow this blog or have popped in from time to time to check it out enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it. I was incredibly flattered the first time I received this award, and was more than happy to forward it to other blogs I thought deserving of the nomination.

Imagine my surprise when I was notified by the beautiful Miss Nadina over at The Wallflower Girl that I’d been nominated for a second time this year!  Nadina’s blog is a wonderful mix of fashion, beauty, and candid, honest writings about her life and her thoughts that show her wisdom far beyond her young years. Thank you so much for this, Nadina! xox

And like the last time, here are the guidelines for the Liebster again:

1. The nominee must link back to the blogger who nominated them.

2. The nominee must state 11 facts about themselves, and then answer the 11 question provided for them by the person who nominated them.

3. They nominee must then nominate bloggers with less than 200 followers, who they think deserve the recognition, and pose 11 new questions for them to answer.

4. They must then tell the bloggers who they have nominated about the award.

Although I say with all sincerity that I hardly consider myself interesting enough to warrant 11 facts, I’m going to attempt it again anyway!

1. While I love nearly all genres of music and have a handful of bands/artists I’m a die-hard and loyal fan of, I have to say that my go-to playlist when I’m feeling creative, or cooking, or cleaning, or even just relaxing while doing absolutely nothing consists mostly of big band/classic jazz/swing music. I listen to a lot of Artie Shaw, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Bing Crosby, and Glenn Miller, among many others. The music can make you happy, it can make you cry, it can make you want to dance, it can make you feel romantic- it can make you feel so many things all at once, and in my opinion, it’s truly the greatest genre of them all.

2. My great-great grandfather on my mother’s side was the mayor of my hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts until his death. He has a field named after him by one of the colleges in the city, and his portrait still hangs in City Hall. Name-dropping him has never gotten me out of a speeding or parking ticket, however- but I do have a Key to the City that’s been passed down from my grandmother to my mom, and then to me- which I think is pretty cool.

3. There’s been an ongoing joke in my family since I was about two or three years old that Slash from the band Guns N’ Roses was my biological father because I was the only one that has insanely curly hair and no one could quite figure out where it came from. This picture of me dressed as Slash in 1988 didn’t really help matters, either:

Slashley1988

4. In 2006 I traveled to the UK to attend the Reading Festival and spend a week sightseeing and gallivanting around London with some friends. It was my first real outdoor festival experience, and apart from the occasional torrential downpour (and resulting very muddy conditions,) it still remains one of my favorite concert memories and something I would highly recommend anyone to go to sometime. Just be sure to bring a good pair of Wellingtons and a warm jacket with you.

5. As convenient and quick as e-mails and text messages are, I still love to write and receive letters, either by hand or in the mail. They just feel more personal to me. I’m also a sucker for beautiful stationary and note cards (PAPYRUS will be the death of me.) Around the holidays, I try to make it a point to pen personalized letters to friends and family rather than just quickly signing my name in a card to let them know I’m thinking of them and wishing them all the best.

6. When I was 10/11, my friends and I, heavily influenced by the movie “The Craft,” decided we were going to practice and study witchcraft. We bought a bunch of “Wicca for Teens” books (seriously. I think I still have one of them,) and spent a large portion of our Summer vacation sitting in a circle in my friend’s basement surrounded by candles, making holy water, and putting protective spells on each other. Sadly, we never reached the “change your hair color just by running your hands through it,” stage- but it was silly fun. Embarrassing to look back on, but fun. (side note: I still love “The Craft!”)

7. I’ve only ever had soda once in my life and I thought it tasted absolutely disgusting (Coca-Cola, for the record.) I’m not a big fan of carbonated drinks in general, but I don’t drink soda at all. Friends have tried to get me to try Sprite or orange soda over the years, insisting that it would taste better, but the Coca-Cola was traumatic enough. I’m all set.

8. My favorite video game series are “Resident Evil,” and “Silent Hill.” It doesn’t matter how bad or nonsensical the plots or characters get. I’ll still play each and every single one that’s released. The first “Resident Evil” on the original Playstation was one of the first video games I ever remember buying for myself with my allowance and baby-sitting money I’d saved up (the other being “PaRappa the Rapper.”) My best friend Sean used to come over my parents’ house all the time after school and on the weekends and we’d take turns playing until he got his own Playstation. Seventeen years later and I still have the most impressive head shot skills when it comes to taking out zombies, Pyramid Head, and Umbrella Corporation’s henchmen. Almost all of the movie adaptations for both series are unwatchable, though.

9. I don’t have any tattoos or piercings (except for my earlobes,) but I’d like very much to get a small yet detailed anchor tattoo somewhere on myself. Not only because of my love for all things nautical, but also in honor of my father, who was very much my “spiritual anchor.” He made sure I kept things in perspective and stayed grounded throughout my life and with all the choices I made.

10. I drive a white 2010 Kia Forte which, with the exception of one time where my fuel line froze after a particularly brutal cold night with next to no gas in my tank- has been very good to me. I take a great deal of pride in my car, and consider it my office-on-the-move, so I keep up with maintenance and am diligent about it’s cleanliness to the point where it may be alarming to any passengers riding with me. I have yet to name it the way some others name their vehicles, though.

11. Sometimes when I’m feeling drained or overwhelmed, a good cry almost always helps flush out my mind, heart, and soul- and makes me feel better. When I need a little help getting the waterworks going, I usually put in a touching movie or listen to a moving soundtrack. My go-to is 2003’s ‘Pieces of April,’ which is one of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching, sweet, and genuinely funny movies I’ve ever seen, backed by a phenomenal soundtrack created by the brilliant Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields. I can’t even summarize the plot without getting a little teary-eyed, but please believe me that it’s absolutely worth watching and that you won’t regret it. It’s one of my favorite films of all time.

The questions Nadina asked me are:

1. All time favorite song?

Oh, this is a hard one. There’s so many to pick from. Interpol’s “The Specialist” comes to mind, as does Dropkick Murphys “Boys on the Dock,” but I’d have to say that my all-time favorite song is Gin Blossoms’ “Til I Hear It From You.” I used to sing it all the time when I was a kid (I loved the movie “Empire Records” growing up,) and whenever I hear it, it’s like a shot of nostalgia. It just takes me back to my childhood bedroom in the apartment where I grew up where I watched the music video for the song on MTV back when they still focused on music.

2. What is your holy grail beauty product?

There’s a lot of products I use that I love, but I’d have to say my Holy Grail- crème de la crème- can’t live without it product is organic virgin coconut oil from Trader Joe’s. It’s inexpensive, smells lovely, and has so many beneficial uses for skin, hair, teeth, and overall health. It works as an incredible 5-minute face mask, a deep conditioning hair treatment, a body moisturizer, a deep cleaning mouth wash, a non-abrasive makeup remover, so on and so forth- and, if you want- you can cook with it, too. I always keep a jar handy in the bathroom and I swear by it.

3. What is one thing you would like to do before you die?

There’s so many things I’d love to do or try, but I think the one thing that really sticks out in my mind is that I’d love to go into one of those cages that get lowered into the ocean among the great white sharks. You just float around in scuba gear inside the cage while the most feared animal of the sea swims around you. With my luck, one would probably try to attack the cage or something- but that’s a risk I’d be willing to take.

4. Good childhood memory?

When I was seven, my parents took me, my two older brothers, and my brother’s friend on a road trip from Massachusetts to Disney World for the very first time. Disney itself was a blast, of course- but I can vividly remember having so much fun on the drive there and back. My dad made sure to stop at a bunch of cheesy tourist attractions, including “South of the Border,” which to me at the time was just as much fun as Magic Kingdom. There was some sibling bickering, of course- but overall it was a really, really fun trip.

5. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?

When I was younger, I hated my nose. I thought it was too big and didn’t fit my face at all. Now that I’m older, I feel like I’ve grown into it- the same way I did with my curly hair that I would go to war with every morning to try and tame before school with harsh chemicals and even harsher flat-irons. I like myself, and I wouldn’t change much except maybe my tendency to have severe road rage at even the slightest of traffic infractions. There is no way yelling as loud or cursing as much as I do while I’m driving is good for anyone’s psychological health.

6. The best compliment you have ever received?

My friend Troy has a tendency to say things to me that really resonate on a deep, meaningful level. He’ll compliment my personality, or tell me he likes the way I laugh, or that he thinks I’m a caring, kind person. The other night he said that he didn’t think I realized how beautiful I really was- and I swear I blushed for a good twenty minutes. That’s one of the more recent compliments that stand out.

Malcolm McDowell also told me I smelled really good once, so there’s definitely that one, too.

7. Favorite room or place in your house?

I’d love to say it’s the kitchen because that’s where the food is, but I really do just adore my bedroom. It’s kind of a mess right now since I’m moving things around for the impending holidays, but when it’s picked up and organized- it’s a space that is very much “me,” from the bold wallpaper pattern to the pictures and postcards I have tacked up. It’s where I go to rest, where my dog goes to hang out and be lazy, and where I go to blog and get work done.

8. Why did you decide to start a blog?

I had actually answered this question the last time I received this award, and my answer hasn’t really changed much! I’m just going to copy and paste what I had written:

“My blogging days began way back in my sophomore year of high school, where I’d write about the guy I had a crush on, homework assignments I didn’t want to do, PG-13 movies I was excited to go see with my friends (if our parents were willing to lend us money drive us to the theater, of course, since none of us were old enough to work or have our licenses), trips to the mall, and school drama. At first, it was just a way for me to chronicle my life and network with other people my age- like a diary that I shared with others- but after a while it sort of became my creative outlet and evolved over the course of more than a decade into what this blog is today.”

9. What’s your favorite food?

I love trying all different types of food, but my absolute favorite type is Italian food. Carb-counters be damned. I love me some pasta and I especially love me some cheese.

10. Who are your inspirations?

I draw inspiration from so many people, places, and things, but I’d say most of my inspiration comes from Bettie Page. Not only style-wise, because she always looked gorgeous, even in non-pin-up photos, but because she was so influential in terms of re-defining sexuality and what was considered “taboo” in her day. Page was confident, comfortable in her own skin, and didn’t see anything shameful with being sexual. Despite her troubling later years and battle with mental illness, nobody can deny the impact Page had in fashion and for women. I admire courage, confidence, and fearlessness like that- and I model my own life after it.

11. One thing you will never leave your house without, other than your cell phone?

My wallet and keys, of course! I’m also going to go ahead and say mascara and breath mints/gum, because you never know when you’re going to need them.

And here are my questions:

1. What is your absolute favorite movie moment of all time?

2. If you could only choose three (3) beauty items to own for the rest of your life, what would they be- and why?

3. What was the best show/concert you’ve ever been to?

4. What’s your quintessential style/fashion piece?

5. If you were given (or won) one million dollars, what would you do with it?

6. If you could travel through time- where/when would you go, and why?

7. What is the one accomplishment you’ve reached in your life that you’re proudest of?

8. What advice would you give to other aspiring bloggers looking to begin writing their own content?

9. With the holidays coming up, what’s your favorite holiday tradition? If you don’t celebrate the holidays- what’s your favorite seasonal tradition?

10. Have you started writing any New Years Resolutions for 2014? Can you share any?

11. Looking back on 2013 so far, what has been your favorite moment- and why?

For this award, and to pass on these questions, I’ve selected Michelle over at Beautiful Goodies, a beauty/fashion/subscription box review/lifestyle blog I greatly enjoy reading. Keep up the great work, Michelle!

And thank you again to Nadina for the nomination, and to everyone who reads this blog! I truly appreciate it!

Quick Eats: Butternut Squash Ravioli

Leave a comment Standard

ButternutSquashRavioli1

It’s been a while since I’ve done a cooking/baking post for the blog, mostly because of my schedule and the majority of my meals being unremarkable (not that they’ve been bad, but they weren’t really worthy of their own post,) but tonight I put some time aside to plan dinner- and this post. I have to say that it feels really good to be back in the kitchen cooking up different things again and adding some variety & flavor to the mix. Butternut squash ravioli is a delicious and filling seasonal dish that is perfect for this time of year. My recipe comes in two parts, the ravioli itself and the sauce, and is also made from scratch- which results in the ravioli not looking perfectly squared and cut like the traditional store bought kind- but tasting 10x better.

YOU WILL NEED (RAVIOLI:)

* Immersion blender

* Rolling pin

* 1/2 Pre-peeled butternut squash (totaling 5 cups after being rinsed and cubed)

* 2 Cups chicken stock

* 2 Cups flour

* 4 Eggs

* 1/4 Teaspoon of olive oil

* 3 Tablespoons of butter

* 1/4 Cup of brown sugar

* 1/2 Cup of potato starch

* 1/4 Teaspoons of nutmeg

YOU WILL NEED (SAUCE:)

* 3 Tablespoons of butter

* 1/4 Cup of flower

* 16 oz. (1 pint) of light cream

* 1 Cube of chicken bouillon

* Shaved Parmesan cheese

* Pinches of salt, pepper, and nutmeg

OKAY, HERE’S WHAT YOU DO:

1. After rinsing and cubing the 5 cups worth of butternut squash, set it in 2 quarts of cold water and begin to boil on the stove. While the water is heating up, add the 2 cups of chicken stock. It’s going to take a little while for the squash to become soft and mushy, so you can work on making the dough for your pasta while you wait.

ButternutSquashRavioli2

2. Pour the two cups of flower on your baking surface. From there, add the 4 eggs, and begin mixing and kneading thoroughly until the dough begins to thicken in texture and consistency.

3. Add the 1/4 tablespoon of olive oil to the dough. Continue to knead. When the dough is thick and evenly mixed, rest a clean, damp cloth over it to keep it from drying out for about 10-15 minutes. Now you can focus on the squash again, which should be tender and ready to be strained by now.

4. After straining the squash and pouring it back into the pan, add the 3 tablespoons of butter, the 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and the 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg to the squash- and begin pureeing with the immersion blender.

ButternutSquashRavioli3

5. After pureeing the mixture for a few minutes, add the 1/2 cup of potato starch and continue using the immersion blender to mix it into your butternut squash filling. This will keep it from being watery or runny when you put it into the pasta and cook it. Once you’re thoroughly mixed everything together and your pureed squash has a rich consistency, feel free to do a taste test to see whether or not you want more nutmeg- and add whatever you feel is an appropriate amount (I just mixed in a couple more pinches to add a little more flavor.)

6. It’s time to go back to the dough. After flouring your rolling pin, roll the dough flat and cut into four inch strips. From there, scoop spoonfuls of squash along the strips of dough.

ButternutSquashRavioli4

7. Fold the dough over the spoonfuls of squash, creating pockets, and cut them into squares. Use a fork or your fingertips to flatten the edges around the squares, keeping the butternut squash filling inside the pocket and giving the ravioli it’s shape.

8. Set raviolis on a floured baking pan, and let them sit for 10-15 minutes while you mix the sauce.

ButternutSquashRavioli5

9. Using another pan, melt the 3 tablespoons of butter and gradually add the 1/4 cup of flour  and the 16 oz. of light cream. Begin to stir/whisk the ingredients together.

10. Add the 1 cube of chicken bouillon to the mixture, as well as pinches of salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Continue to stir/whisk until the consistency of the sauce is nice and thick. *IF THE SAUCE BECOMES TOO HEAVY, YOU CAN THIN IT OUT BY ADDING A LITTLE MILK TO IT.*

ButternutSquashRavioli6

11. While letting your sauce simmer, you can now add your ravioli to a pot of boiling water to finish cooking. When it’s done, strain the excess water from the pan and add the sauce to the pasta- making sure each piece is generously coated.

12. Serve the ravioli with the shaved Parmesan cheese and pinches of nutmeg for added flavor.

13. Spoon ravioli into face.

ButternutSquashRavioli7

These ravioli tasted so, so good, and were absolutely worth the mini-mess I made in my kitchen with the flour and brown sugar while I was preparing them.

Sephora Holiday Haul.

SephoraHolidayHaul20131

A few days after Halloween, I was driving to work and scanning through the radio stations since I’d failed to charge my iPod battery during the night, resulting in it dying shortly after I’d left my house. I’d flipped through some top 40, morning talk segments, and some sports analysis shows when I suddenly heard one of the verses to “Frosty The Snowman.” I waited for the song to finish, wondering what was going on the entire time, when it segued into Bing Crosby’s “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas.” Turns out, I had unwittingly stumbled upon a New England station that had started to play non-stop Christmas music, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week- until December 26th. A couple of days after that, I started getting e-mails from the different company/store mailing lists I’m on advertising holiday specials and/or gifts and gift sets for Christmas.

Not to sound like one of those crotchety “when I was your age, I had to walk twelve miles to and from school, barefoot in the snow,” people, but when I was a kid- the actual Christmas and holiday season didn’t kick off until the day after Thanksgiving- at least for my family, anyway- and it was perfect. It was just the right, appropriate amount of time to decorate, listen to lots of Christmas carols without getting sick of them, get whatever shopping, parties, and gatherings done and out of the way- and just enjoy the holiday with friends and loved ones before it was time to take the decorations down and prepare for New Years.

When I entered my teens, and started working retail (going from job to job for a good several years before I began working in law,) and the holiday season was pretty much thrust upon my co-workers and I earlier and earlier each year, I was miserable. Ungodly hours. Rude, shitty customers. Ruder, shittier managers and supervisors. Crummy pay. No time to actually spend with family or friends. Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” on a continuous loop. It was just the worst- and to this day I still have a tremendous amount of respect for anyone who works retail because I know their suffering and struggle first-hand. When I started hearing the music and started receiving the holiday advertisements over the past few days- my heart went out to everyone I know, and even the people I’ve never met, who are working those insane “holiday hours” for the next two months. If anyone reading this works in retail- I’m so, so sorry. Please hang in there. If I ever come into the store where you work, I assure you I will not be an asshole to you or any of your co-workers.

My beloved Sephora was unfortunately one of the stores sucked into the way-too-early-for-Christmas whirlwind, having already put out their seasonal gift sets and started decorating the store to give it a more “festive” feel. I stopped by a location today while out buying groceries and purchasing a couple of new sweaters to take advantage of their V.I.B. sale and pick up some new eye shadow and lipstick in preparation for some pre-Thanksgiving events that are coming up, as well as Thanksgiving itself. I’m well stocked for my everyday skin care regime, but what’s left of my makeup, sans a few samples I’ve received via GlossyBox and Ipsy, is still leftover from my last Sephora Summer Haul in July (CLICK HERE TO VIEW.)

I left with a few more items, including a really cute black & white striped (with a pink hot pink lip mark) tote bag.

Here’s what I purchased (from left to right:)

SephoraHolidayHaul20132

1. Philosophy Shampoo, Shower Gel, and Bubble Bath in “Spiced Gingerbread Cookie” and “Peppermint Stick” ($16.50 each): Just because I don’t like starting the holiday season too early doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy smelling like a gingerbread cookie or a candy cane, right? Right?! I love Philosophy’s three-in-one bottles year-round, although I never use them to cleanse my hair, because they smell amazing and nourish my skin whether used as a body wash or as a bubble bath. I saw these two seasonal scents (along with some Christmas sugar cookie-scented gift sets that admittedly caught my eye,) and couldn’t resist. I’ve indulged in “Spiced Gingerbread Cookie” during holidays past, so this bottle was a no-brainer for me, but the “Peppermint Stick” fragrance is so refreshing and invigorating. I can’t use it in the shower in the mornings before work to wake myself up.

SephoraHolidayHaul20133

2. Urban Decay Eye Shadow in “Baked,” “Psychedelic Sister,” and “Mildew” ($18 each): I had originally wanted to purchase a highly pigmented and shimmery bronze/copper/gold shade of eye shadow during this trip to Sephora, which I found in Urban Decay’s single shadow in “Baked,” but when I laid eyes on the equally pigmented “Psychedelic Sister,” a deep, shimmery amethyst, and “Mildew,” which despite the unfortunate name, is an absolutely gorgeous moss green with flecks of gold in it- I grabbed those, too. Golds, purples, and greens are my go-to colors for my eyes in the Autumn and Winter, because they compliment my red hair and blue eyes, and I think I hit the jackpot with these three shadows.

SephoraHolidayHaul20134

3. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in “Psychedelic Sister” and “Mildew” ($19 each): I know I’ve mostly dismissed pencil eyeliners in the past after more than one disappointing experience, but while I was in the Urban Decay section of Sephora, these creamy pencil eyeliners (that match the above eye shadows,) piqued my interest. These pencils are soft to the touch (so no sore eyelids,) are highly pigmented, and stay in place all day without budging or smudging. I swatched these with the shadows I purchased in a variety of color combinations and each one looked beautiful. I may have to reconsider my stance on pencil liners. Maybe. All I know is I’m a big fan of these.

4. Sephora Collection Skinny Brush Wrap in Emerald ($36): I’ve had the same makeup brushes for years, and they’re still in good condition- not only because of their quality, but because I clean and store them properly, too. My brushes are on the bulkier side, however, and since I have quite a few different ones- it makes traveling with them a little difficult. My brush pouch often doesn’t fit inside my makeup bag with my cosmetics- even when I take the time to pack everything neatly. I decided to grab this small, sleek brush collection in a pretty green case for when I’m on the go. The set includes:

– Powder brush
– Foundation brush
– Crease brush
– Shadow brush
– Angled liner brush

Those brushes, to me, are the essentials. I’ll be taking this wrap with me when I travel to save some space in my makeup bag.

SephoraHolidayHaul20135

SephoraHolidayHaul20136

5. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in “Liar” ($22): Back in August, I had received a sample of this lipstick in the shade “Anarchy” in my IPSY bag and fell in love with the formula. I had wanted to go with a more neutral shade in the Fall/Winter as an alternative for my usual wine-colored lip (which I’ve achieved to perfection with Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick in the shade “Wine With Everything.”) It was a tough choice, but after swatching the nudes in the collection a few times, I decided to go with “Liar,” which looks like a pink-nude in the tube, but applies as more of a subtle beige without looking too brown on my lips. The formula is still as wonderful as ever, making this the perfect lipstick for work or the days where I want some color without wanting to go with a deep red.

And there it is. Another haul that should last me through the rest of November, the entirety of Winter, and into the Spring. I’m really excited to start playing around with the eye shadow and eyeliner colors, and have a nice long soak with my gingerbread cookie bubble bath, of course- even if it’s not quite Christmastime yet.

GLOSSYBOX: October 2013 Review.

October2013GlossyBox2

Hey beauty bloggers! You didn’t think I’d forgotten about my GlossyBox, did you? In between all the gory, gruesomely good fun I was having last month, I was also taking the time to try out the five samples I received in October’s box- a collaboration with BYRDIE, whose site is a real treat and definitely worth a bookmark if you’re an avid lover, or even just a casual fan- of all things beauty & cosmetics. I’m loving their “Style Icon” slideshows and step-by-step hairstyle tutorials for different up-dos.

WHAT I RECEIVED:

Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream

BVLGARI Eau Parfumée Au Thé Vert – Eau De Cologne Spray

SESHA ReNu Exfoliating Gel

Tarte “Lights, Camera, Flashes” Statement Mascara (*FULL SIZE*)

Balance Me “Shine On!” Tinted Lip Salve (*FULL SIZE*)

Product # 1: Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream ($42)

Having briefly read about the “Super 7 Complex” in this daily moisturizer, meant to reduce and prevent signs of aging while boosting radiance and adding hydration to the skin, I was curious and applied it for a few days, day & night, to see if I noticed any difference on my skin. The moisturizer is lightweight, with a very, very faint, somewhat floral fragrance- that is in no way overpowering and doesn’t seem to cause any kind of reaction to the sensitive areas of my skin. It absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue or sheen on my face, and in terms of results- my skin was definitely hydrated, and after about two-three days, my complexion seemed to be a little brighter, too.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I’m pretty set on my ways when it comes to facial creams and moisturizers, but I really liked this one and wouldn’t be opposed to purchasing a full size jar for the colder months to give my skin some extra moisture without making it look dull, or slick.

October2013GlossyBox3

Product # 2: BVLGARI Eau Parfumée Au Thé Vert – Eau De Cologne Spray ($85)

I feel like GlossyBox just really, really wants me to like BVLGARI products. I’ve received samples of a soap bar, a body wash, a bath soak, and now this perfume that arrived in a lovely little glass bottle. While the bath products themselves have been very nourishing and luxurious, I’ve almost always had a problem with the fragrance, which I’ve never quite taken to. Fortunately, this perfume was refreshingly light, and very clean smelling. I think it’d be more appropriate for a Summertime scent, but I enjoyed wearing it for the couple of days I tried it. My only problem is that it doesn’t last long at all. I had to re-apply a few times throughout the day since it faded so quickly.

Would I Purchase?: No. As much as I liked the scent, I was put off by it’s lack of staying-power. For $85, I would hope the fragrance would at least last for a considerable amount of time. This one just couldn’t cut it, though, which means I’ll probably stick to my usual Spring/Summer fragrances next year.

Product # 3: SESHA ReNu Exfoliating Gel ($42)

I had a mask similar to this gel peel years and years ago. You would apply and spread a thin layer all your face, wait a minute or two, and gently rub your skin in a circular motion with your fingertips. The mask would bead up, taking dead skin cells and pore-clogging gunk with it, and you’d simply rinse your face, gently pat it dry with a towel, and you were all set. I loved that mask, and was really eager to try this sample to see if it could achieve similar results.

Unfortunately, this gel didn’t exactly apply easily, spreading unevenly if at all, and rubbing it off was even worse. It stuck to certain areas of my face, making it painful to remove, even with water, and causing my skin to get a little red and irritated. The results weren’t even worth the aggravation, as I could get the same, and probably better exfoliated feeling with a regular apricot scrub.

Would I Purchase?: No. This product was just not for me at all. An anything-but-smooth application, a painful removal, and sub par results for something that is a little bit on the pricier side. I’ll stick to what works and what won’t break the bank.

October2013GlossyBox4

Product # 4: Tarte “Lights, Camera, Flashes” Statement Mascara ($23)

I’m pretty sure I say this with every Tarte product I receive, but their packaging is really unique. I didn’t think anything could top their wooden lipstick containers, and then I opened this gold snakeskin pouched mascara tube. “Lights, Camera, Flashes” was touted as being an extremely lengthening, volumizing, and intensely dark with it’s vitamin-infused formula and state of the art duel-molded brush that coats every lash. I’ve been wearing this mascara for about a week now, and while it’s definitely dark and it most certainly lengthens my lashes- giving them an almost soft, fluttery look, it leaves a lot to be desired in the volume department. I had to apply a few coats to thicken my lashes to get the desired look.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I know I am typically the false-lashes-look lover, but there is something about the way this mascara brightens my eyes, gives my lashes sky-high length and curl, and stays in place all day without smudging or flaking that has just completely won me over. I think this is my new go-to for my eye makeup for work, since it’s definitely noticeable but in no way too dramatic looking.

October2013GlossyBox5

October2013GlossyBox6

Product # 5: Balance Me “Shine On!” Tinted Lip Salve ($16.50)

When I first picked up this deep brown tinted lip gloss, I was a little concerned because it looked like there was a good amount missing from the tube, as if it had already been used, but upon closer inspection, it seemed that nothing had been tampered with and the unusual amount of unfilled space in the tube was just how the product comes, which was the first of many let-downs when it came to this salve. The second was the smell. This gloss smelled really weird as I applied it, like Balance Me had tried to go for some sort of cinnamon/mint combo but fell short. It was nauseating, really. My third gripe with this product was how slick it made my lips, and not in a hydrating way. It felt as if I’d applied some sort of oil on my mouth, and rather than moisturize, it just made them really slippery and uncomfortable.

Lastly, while the color looks dark in the tube, it applied as a sheer nude- but it only lasted about ten minutes, tops, before it faded completely (probably because of how oily this formula is.) I ended up just putting the tube back in the box and grabbing one of my hydrating lipsticks, instead.

Would I Purchase?: No. This balm was just bad all the way around. The packaging, which I felt was a ripoff for the price, the scent, the feel, the longevity. I’d steer clear from this salve.

No offense to BYRDIE, but while I usually love the collaboration boxes that GlossyBox does from time to time- this one was sort of a let-down. I did enjoy two of the products I received (the face cream and the mascara,) nothing else in the box really jumped out at me. The perfume didn’t last long enough, the exfoliating gel was harsh on my skin, and the lip salve was disappointing, to say the least. I’m hoping my next GlossyBox is more of an upgrade.

In other news, I decided to bite the bullet and participate in NaNoWriMo this month, beginning my attempt last Friday, and while I’m beyond behind in my word count so far (50,000 words is A LOT harder to write than you’d think), I’m hoping to pick up the slack over the next couple of days with the chapters, dialogue, twists, turns- and a whole lot of editing- that I have swirling in my head.

You can track my progress HERE while I try to complete my book, “The Pursuit of a Purpose,” before the end of the month.

Wish me luck!

Yesterday was an unseasonably warm day in Boston (I’m talking t-shirt and no-jacket-necessary weather,) which set the tone for a morning of joy and reflection for the Red Sox rolling rally to celebrate their World Series win. While some of my friends opted to get up before dawn to find themselves a spot at Fenway, where the parade began, I was content with getting a couple of extra hours of sleep and then squeezing in between the masses at Government Center right as the parade was getting underway. There, I drank my coffee and talked about the team’s unbelievable season and favorite moments of the series with a few other people who had gathered to watch while we waited for the duck boats carrying the team to come by.

After the parade passed by my section on it’s way to the Charles, the crowd eventually dispersed. Some headed off after the duck boats, following along the parade route, and plenty of others began crowding into nearby pubs and restaurants. I decided to walk over to Boylston Street to meet with a few people for lunch. As I approached the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon, the overall mood was refreshingly upbeat. Nearly everyone was in Red Sox and Boston Strong garb (myself included,) and lined up outside many of the establishments waiting to get inside, but even those who weren’t- or who just happened to be in the area- were smiling, snapping photos, throwing around some of the confetti left over from the duck boats, talking to & laughing with the numerous police officers milling about on the sidewalk and keeping an eye on everyone by the bars- and even participating in different chants and cheers of enthusiastic (and maybe slightly drunk) parade-goers.

It was just such a nice feeling. Truly the best way to spend a beautiful November morning.
