Ipsy Bag: November 2013 Review.

NovemberIpsyBag20132

I had gushed about how much I enjoyed October’s Ipsy bag, with three (maybe four) of the five products and samples I received being absolutely awesome. I figured such an impressive value would be hard to beat, but I’m happy to report that November’s bag, with a “Glam It Up” theme, was just as- if not more- fun to try and play around with.

What I Received:

Be A Bombshell Lip Crayon in ‘Hot Damn’ (*FULL SIZE*)

Starlooks Gem Eye Pencil in ‘Topaz’ (*FULL SIZE*)

BH Cosmetics Baked Eyeshadow in ‘Aphrodite’

Em Cosmetics: Lip Gallery Creamy Color Sheer Lipstick in ‘Nude’ (*FULL SIZE*)

Pixi Beauty Bronzer

Nailtini Straight Up Color Nail Lacquer in ‘Champagne’ (*FULL SIZE*)

Product # 1: Be A Bombshell Lip Crayon in ‘Hot Damn’ ($14)

At first glance, this fire engine red lip crayon looks like it’d be intimidating to wear. It’s definitely bright and it’s more than bold. I’ve said before that those two traits are typically right up my alley when it comes to cosmetics, but I’ve also said that red lips can be a tricky thing for me. Too dark can mean looking washed out, and too bright can mean looking like a circus clown. It’s hard to find a happy medium that compliments my skin tone. ‘Hot Damn’ actually applied as more of a reddish-pink, which was a relief, and was quite pretty, suitable for the colder months and coming holidays- but the formula was unfortunately a bit drying. It also began to fade after about an hour or so, the pigmentation of the initial color eventually turning to a deep pink stain on my lips that lasted for another hour, give or take- before vanishing completely.

Would I Purchase?: No. I look for three things in lip color: pigmentation, longevity, and hydration for my lips. While this crayon had pigmentation, however brief- the overall finish and texture left a lot to be desired.

Product # 2: Starlooks Gem Eye Pencil in ‘Topaz’ ($14)

I was admittedly a little excited when I saw the color of this eyeliner, although I’m not particularly fond of the harder pencil ones. A beautiful, sparkly metallic silver, ‘Topaz’ glided on easily and pain-free with no scratching or irritation to my eyes. I blended a thin line across my upper lids, and immediately saw how much brighter it made them look. The liner stayed in place all day without fading or smudging, but I did see a little bit of the sparkle had ended up underneath my eyes by the end of the night- although it was barely noticeable. Apart from that, which wasn’t a big deal at all, I was pleasantly surprised.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I loved this formula (a first for a hard pencil liner,) and I loved the color. This is a beautiful, long-lasting liner to have for the holidays that would look wonderful with festive and sparkly party dresses and accessories.

Pre-blending. This is the ‘Aphrodite’ color after just one swipe of my brush.

Product # 3: BH Cosmetics Baked Eyeshadow in ‘Aphrodite’ ($14.95 for complete palette)

Although it was beautiful in the packaging, I wasn’t sure how ‘Aphrodite,’ a deep, shimmery rose with a touch of violet, would actually look on my fair skin. I applied it in the morning before work, and was quite pleased with how it stayed in place all day without fading or flaking down onto my cheeks- but the color wasn’t flattering on me at all. Instead of looking rose/violet, the shadow appeared a bit more reddish/somewhat orange-y on my lids- making me look like I had an unusual case of pink-eye.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I wouldn’t purchase ‘Aphrodite’ again, because the color just didn’t look good on me at all, but I have to give credit where credit is due. I really enjoyed how long-lasting and mess-free this formula was. I’d be more than happy to try a different, more complimentary shade in the future.

Product # 4: Em Cosmetics: Lip Gallery Creamy Color Sheer Lipstick in ‘Nude’ ($16.50)

Each of November’s Ipsy bags featured a product from Em cosmetics, the new makeup line from Ipsy founder and YouTube personality, Michelle Phan. I saw the ‘Nude’ lipstick in the tube and was really looking forward to trying it because of how lovely it looked. As it’s name implies, the shade was a very subdued, every-day nude/pink that was nearly identical to my natural lip color. It looked as though I’d applied a clear lip balm at first since the sheer formula isn’t very pigmented at all. The texture of the lipstick was also similar to a balm- very smooth and very creamy. My lips felt soft and glossy. The only downside to this lipstick was how quickly it disappeared. No sooner had I applied some of this to my lips when I had to re-apply less than an hour later, and then again less than an hour after that, and so on.

Would I Purchase?: No. It sucks to say it, because the color, while sheer, was nice enough, and the texture of the lipstick felt wonderful- but I could get longer lasting color, with similar moisturizing results, at half the price of a tube of this- with drug store brand lipsticks or lip balms.

NovemberIpsyBag201311

Product # 5: Pixi Beauty Bronzer ($18)

I’m overtly cautious when it comes to bronzers. Some appear too dark on my skin and many more turn orange after I’ve applied them, which is never a good look. I’ve been content with my Laura Mercier powder bronzer for quite some time now since it’s one of the more natural tones I’ve come across, but when I saw this Pixi bronzer (in the lightest shade possible) in the package, I wasn’t immediately frightened away. It looked light enough for my complexion and there wasn’t any shimmer to worry about. I gave it a shot- and I was very, very happy with the results. This bronzer gave me a hint of color, was in no way overpowering, and didn’t appear orange on my skin. It looked like I had the most subtle of tans, and it helped to highlight my cheekbones. I’m impressed.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is just one of those products that works really well for me. It gave great results with no weird reactions (breakouts, irritation to the skin, etc.) I think my favorite aspect of it was how natural it looked. I don’t like a lot of shimmer on my face, and this bronzer had a lovely matte finish which complimented the rest of my makeup. I’m sold.

Product # 6: Nailtini Straight Up Color Nail Lacquer in ‘Champagne’ ($13)

I can never have enough nail polishes. I’ve been sporting a subtly-sparkled pewter shade for the past week and a half, but when I opened the box for this lacquer, I couldn’t wait to switch. ‘Champagne’ is, as you guessed- a champagne color. With a shimmery pinkish/nude/kind of gold hue, this polish glided on easily and dried to a beautiful finish in just two coats (and a top coat to seal it in place.) Much like the ‘Topaz’ eyeliner I received in this month’s bag, this shade is perfect for the upcoming holidays since it will compliment any outfit.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I really liked the formula to this polish, and the color is absolutely gorgeous. I have a wide variety of reds, pinks, and corals in my lacquer collection, as well as some brighter colors like yellows, purples, blues and greens- so it’s nice to have a beautiful nude shade to add to the mix for when I want long-term wear that won’t clash with my wardrobe or makeup selections.

With October and now November’s Ipsy bags being really, really well put together (even if I wasn’t completely in love with everything I received,) I’m excited to see what they’re planning for December. With it being the holidays and the end of the year, I’m hoping that they pull out all the stops.

Sephora Holiday Haul.

Comments 3 Standard

SephoraHolidayHaul20131

A few days after Halloween, I was driving to work and scanning through the radio stations since I’d failed to charge my iPod battery during the night, resulting in it dying shortly after I’d left my house. I’d flipped through some top 40, morning talk segments, and some sports analysis shows when I suddenly heard one of the verses to “Frosty The Snowman.” I waited for the song to finish, wondering what was going on the entire time, when it segued into Bing Crosby’s “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas.” Turns out, I had unwittingly stumbled upon a New England station that had started to play non-stop Christmas music, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week- until December 26th. A couple of days after that, I started getting e-mails from the different company/store mailing lists I’m on advertising holiday specials and/or gifts and gift sets for Christmas.

Not to sound like one of those crotchety “when I was your age, I had to walk twelve miles to and from school, barefoot in the snow,” people, but when I was a kid- the actual Christmas and holiday season didn’t kick off until the day after Thanksgiving- at least for my family, anyway- and it was perfect. It was just the right, appropriate amount of time to decorate, listen to lots of Christmas carols without getting sick of them, get whatever shopping, parties, and gatherings done and out of the way- and just enjoy the holiday with friends and loved ones before it was time to take the decorations down and prepare for New Years.

When I entered my teens, and started working retail (going from job to job for a good several years before I began working in law,) and the holiday season was pretty much thrust upon my co-workers and I earlier and earlier each year, I was miserable. Ungodly hours. Rude, shitty customers. Ruder, shittier managers and supervisors. Crummy pay. No time to actually spend with family or friends. Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” on a continuous loop. It was just the worst- and to this day I still have a tremendous amount of respect for anyone who works retail because I know their suffering and struggle first-hand. When I started hearing the music and started receiving the holiday advertisements over the past few days- my heart went out to everyone I know, and even the people I’ve never met, who are working those insane “holiday hours” for the next two months. If anyone reading this works in retail- I’m so, so sorry. Please hang in there. If I ever come into the store where you work, I assure you I will not be an asshole to you or any of your co-workers.

My beloved Sephora was unfortunately one of the stores sucked into the way-too-early-for-Christmas whirlwind, having already put out their seasonal gift sets and started decorating the store to give it a more “festive” feel. I stopped by a location today while out buying groceries and purchasing a couple of new sweaters to take advantage of their V.I.B. sale and pick up some new eye shadow and lipstick in preparation for some pre-Thanksgiving events that are coming up, as well as Thanksgiving itself. I’m well stocked for my everyday skin care regime, but what’s left of my makeup, sans a few samples I’ve received via GlossyBox and Ipsy, is still leftover from my last Sephora Summer Haul in July (CLICK HERE TO VIEW.)

I left with a few more items, including a really cute black & white striped (with a pink hot pink lip mark) tote bag.

Here’s what I purchased (from left to right:)

SephoraHolidayHaul20132

1. Philosophy Shampoo, Shower Gel, and Bubble Bath in “Spiced Gingerbread Cookie” and “Peppermint Stick” ($16.50 each): Just because I don’t like starting the holiday season too early doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy smelling like a gingerbread cookie or a candy cane, right? Right?! I love Philosophy’s three-in-one bottles year-round, although I never use them to cleanse my hair, because they smell amazing and nourish my skin whether used as a body wash or as a bubble bath. I saw these two seasonal scents (along with some Christmas sugar cookie-scented gift sets that admittedly caught my eye,) and couldn’t resist. I’ve indulged in “Spiced Gingerbread Cookie” during holidays past, so this bottle was a no-brainer for me, but the “Peppermint Stick” fragrance is so refreshing and invigorating. I can’t use it in the shower in the mornings before work to wake myself up.

SephoraHolidayHaul20133

2. Urban Decay Eye Shadow in “Baked,” “Psychedelic Sister,” and “Mildew” ($18 each): I had originally wanted to purchase a highly pigmented and shimmery bronze/copper/gold shade of eye shadow during this trip to Sephora, which I found in Urban Decay’s single shadow in “Baked,” but when I laid eyes on the equally pigmented “Psychedelic Sister,” a deep, shimmery amethyst, and “Mildew,” which despite the unfortunate name, is an absolutely gorgeous moss green with flecks of gold in it- I grabbed those, too. Golds, purples, and greens are my go-to colors for my eyes in the Autumn and Winter, because they compliment my red hair and blue eyes, and I think I hit the jackpot with these three shadows.

SephoraHolidayHaul20134

3. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in “Psychedelic Sister” and “Mildew” ($19 each): I know I’ve mostly dismissed pencil eyeliners in the past after more than one disappointing experience, but while I was in the Urban Decay section of Sephora, these creamy pencil eyeliners (that match the above eye shadows,) piqued my interest. These pencils are soft to the touch (so no sore eyelids,) are highly pigmented, and stay in place all day without budging or smudging. I swatched these with the shadows I purchased in a variety of color combinations and each one looked beautiful. I may have to reconsider my stance on pencil liners. Maybe. All I know is I’m a big fan of these.

4. Sephora Collection Skinny Brush Wrap in Emerald ($36): I’ve had the same makeup brushes for years, and they’re still in good condition- not only because of their quality, but because I clean and store them properly, too. My brushes are on the bulkier side, however, and since I have quite a few different ones- it makes traveling with them a little difficult. My brush pouch often doesn’t fit inside my makeup bag with my cosmetics- even when I take the time to pack everything neatly. I decided to grab this small, sleek brush collection in a pretty green case for when I’m on the go. The set includes:

– Powder brush
– Foundation brush
– Crease brush
– Shadow brush
– Angled liner brush

Those brushes, to me, are the essentials. I’ll be taking this wrap with me when I travel to save some space in my makeup bag.

SephoraHolidayHaul20135

SephoraHolidayHaul20136

5. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in “Liar” ($22): Back in August, I had received a sample of this lipstick in the shade “Anarchy” in my IPSY bag and fell in love with the formula. I had wanted to go with a more neutral shade in the Fall/Winter as an alternative for my usual wine-colored lip (which I’ve achieved to perfection with Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick in the shade “Wine With Everything.”) It was a tough choice, but after swatching the nudes in the collection a few times, I decided to go with “Liar,” which looks like a pink-nude in the tube, but applies as more of a subtle beige without looking too brown on my lips. The formula is still as wonderful as ever, making this the perfect lipstick for work or the days where I want some color without wanting to go with a deep red.

And there it is. Another haul that should last me through the rest of November, the entirety of Winter, and into the Spring. I’m really excited to start playing around with the eye shadow and eyeliner colors, and have a nice long soak with my gingerbread cookie bubble bath, of course- even if it’s not quite Christmastime yet.

GLOSSYBOX: October 2013 Review.

October2013GlossyBox1

October2013GlossyBox2

Hey beauty bloggers! You didn’t think I’d forgotten about my GlossyBox, did you? In between all the gory, gruesomely good fun I was having last month, I was also taking the time to try out the five samples I received in October’s box- a collaboration with BYRDIE, whose site is a real treat and definitely worth a bookmark if you’re an avid lover, or even just a casual fan- of all things beauty & cosmetics. I’m loving their “Style Icon” slideshows and step-by-step hairstyle tutorials for different up-dos.

WHAT I RECEIVED:

Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream

BVLGARI Eau Parfumée Au Thé Vert – Eau De Cologne Spray

SESHA ReNu Exfoliating Gel

Tarte “Lights, Camera, Flashes” Statement Mascara (*FULL SIZE*)

Balance Me “Shine On!” Tinted Lip Salve (*FULL SIZE*)

Product # 1: Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream ($42)

Having briefly read about the “Super 7 Complex” in this daily moisturizer, meant to reduce and prevent signs of aging while boosting radiance and adding hydration to the skin, I was curious and applied it for a few days, day & night, to see if I noticed any difference on my skin. The moisturizer is lightweight, with a very, very faint, somewhat floral fragrance- that is in no way overpowering and doesn’t seem to cause any kind of reaction to the sensitive areas of my skin. It absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue or sheen on my face, and in terms of results- my skin was definitely hydrated, and after about two-three days, my complexion seemed to be a little brighter, too.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I’m pretty set on my ways when it comes to facial creams and moisturizers, but I really liked this one and wouldn’t be opposed to purchasing a full size jar for the colder months to give my skin some extra moisture without making it look dull, or slick.

October2013GlossyBox3

Product # 2: BVLGARI Eau Parfumée Au Thé Vert – Eau De Cologne Spray ($85)

I feel like GlossyBox just really, really wants me to like BVLGARI products. I’ve received samples of a soap bar, a body wash, a bath soak, and now this perfume that arrived in a lovely little glass bottle. While the bath products themselves have been very nourishing and luxurious, I’ve almost always had a problem with the fragrance, which I’ve never quite taken to. Fortunately, this perfume was refreshingly light, and very clean smelling. I think it’d be more appropriate for a Summertime scent, but I enjoyed wearing it for the couple of days I tried it. My only problem is that it doesn’t last long at all. I had to re-apply a few times throughout the day since it faded so quickly.

Would I Purchase?: No. As much as I liked the scent, I was put off by it’s lack of staying-power. For $85, I would hope the fragrance would at least last for a considerable amount of time. This one just couldn’t cut it, though, which means I’ll probably stick to my usual Spring/Summer fragrances next year.

Product # 3: SESHA ReNu Exfoliating Gel ($42)

I had a mask similar to this gel peel years and years ago. You would apply and spread a thin layer all your face, wait a minute or two, and gently rub your skin in a circular motion with your fingertips. The mask would bead up, taking dead skin cells and pore-clogging gunk with it, and you’d simply rinse your face, gently pat it dry with a towel, and you were all set. I loved that mask, and was really eager to try this sample to see if it could achieve similar results.

Unfortunately, this gel didn’t exactly apply easily, spreading unevenly if at all, and rubbing it off was even worse. It stuck to certain areas of my face, making it painful to remove, even with water, and causing my skin to get a little red and irritated. The results weren’t even worth the aggravation, as I could get the same, and probably better exfoliated feeling with a regular apricot scrub.

Would I Purchase?: No. This product was just not for me at all. An anything-but-smooth application, a painful removal, and sub par results for something that is a little bit on the pricier side. I’ll stick to what works and what won’t break the bank.

October2013GlossyBox4

Product # 4: Tarte “Lights, Camera, Flashes” Statement Mascara ($23)

I’m pretty sure I say this with every Tarte product I receive, but their packaging is really unique. I didn’t think anything could top their wooden lipstick containers, and then I opened this gold snakeskin pouched mascara tube. “Lights, Camera, Flashes” was touted as being an extremely lengthening, volumizing, and intensely dark with it’s vitamin-infused formula and state of the art duel-molded brush that coats every lash. I’ve been wearing this mascara for about a week now, and while it’s definitely dark and it most certainly lengthens my lashes- giving them an almost soft, fluttery look, it leaves a lot to be desired in the volume department. I had to apply a few coats to thicken my lashes to get the desired look.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I know I am typically the false-lashes-look lover, but there is something about the way this mascara brightens my eyes, gives my lashes sky-high length and curl, and stays in place all day without smudging or flaking that has just completely won me over. I think this is my new go-to for my eye makeup for work, since it’s definitely noticeable but in no way too dramatic looking.

October2013GlossyBox5

October2013GlossyBox6

Product # 5: Balance Me “Shine On!” Tinted Lip Salve ($16.50)

When I first picked up this deep brown tinted lip gloss, I was a little concerned because it looked like there was a good amount missing from the tube, as if it had already been used, but upon closer inspection, it seemed that nothing had been tampered with and the unusual amount of unfilled space in the tube was just how the product comes, which was the first of many let-downs when it came to this salve. The second was the smell. This gloss smelled really weird as I applied it, like Balance Me had tried to go for some sort of cinnamon/mint combo but fell short. It was nauseating, really. My third gripe with this product was how slick it made my lips, and not in a hydrating way. It felt as if I’d applied some sort of oil on my mouth, and rather than moisturize, it just made them really slippery and uncomfortable.

Lastly, while the color looks dark in the tube, it applied as a sheer nude- but it only lasted about ten minutes, tops, before it faded completely (probably because of how oily this formula is.) I ended up just putting the tube back in the box and grabbing one of my hydrating lipsticks, instead.

Would I Purchase?: No. This balm was just bad all the way around. The packaging, which I felt was a ripoff for the price, the scent, the feel, the longevity. I’d steer clear from this salve.

No offense to BYRDIE, but while I usually love the collaboration boxes that GlossyBox does from time to time- this one was sort of a let-down. I did enjoy two of the products I received (the face cream and the mascara,) nothing else in the box really jumped out at me. The perfume didn’t last long enough, the exfoliating gel was harsh on my skin, and the lip salve was disappointing, to say the least. I’m hoping my next GlossyBox is more of an upgrade.

In other news, I decided to bite the bullet and participate in NaNoWriMo this month, beginning my attempt last Friday, and while I’m beyond behind in my word count so far (50,000 words is A LOT harder to write than you’d think), I’m hoping to pick up the slack over the next couple of days with the chapters, dialogue, twists, turns- and a whole lot of editing- that I have swirling in my head.

You can track my progress HERE while I try to complete my book, “The Pursuit of a Purpose,” before the end of the month.

Wish me luck!

Ipsy Bag: October 2013 Review.

IpsyOctober20131

IpsyOctober20132

IpsyOctober20133

In between reviewing terrible horror movies in preparation for Halloween, and Rock N’ Shock weekend, I received my October Ipsy Glam Bag in the mail and have been actively trying out the products. I’ve only been subscribed to Ipsy for a couple of months now,  but I think the October bag may be my favorite one so far. Although I don’t necessarily understand what most of these products, sans-nail polish, have to do with the “Art of Beauty” theme this month was going for, I thought the actual design of the bag itself was really cute and I was pretty excited to check out what was inside.

What I Received:

Sexy Hair ‘Spray Clay’ Texturizing Spray Clay

be Delectable Hand Cream in ‘Coconut & Cream’

Buxom Full-On Lip Polish in ‘Dolly’

Zoya Nail Polish in ‘Mason’ (*Full Size!*)

Ole Henriksen Truth Crème Advanced Hydration

Product # 1: Sexy Hair ‘Spray Clay’ Texturizing Spray Clay ($18.95)

I couldn’t think of a better time to try this spray than after recently flat-ironing my hair. I needed something strong enough to tame the fly-away strands by my hairline, but wasn’t too strong that it made my hair stiff- or worse- oily looking. Unfortunately, my hair did, in fact, look and feel pretty “crunchy” after applying. The application itself was a pain, as the spray comes out of the bottle EXTREMELY hard and has a very strong, potent smell that doesn’t fade easily. Advertised as giving hair a “textured, matte” finish, my hair looked more dry than anything else- and the holding power was only temporary. My fly-aways were back to cause me grief within an hour or so after I first sprayed this on.

Would I Purchase?: No. “Sexy Hair” products are either terrific hits that work wonderfully, or total misses. This clay spray, in my opinion, is a miss. The almost-painful speed at which this stuff comes out of the bottle, the overwhelming smell, the finish, the poor hold- it was just bad all around.

Product # 2: be Delectable Hand Cream in ‘Coconut & Cream’ ($10)

IpsyOctober20134

Okay, first things first- I thought the packaging of this hand cream was adorable, and I was even more thrilled when I opened the container and immediately smelled coconut cupcake. This cream is loaded with shea butter, coconut oil, and aloe vera, and although the texture was thick- it wasn’t greasy by any means, and absorbed quickly into my skin- keeping my hands & cuticles soft and hydrated for hours. I’ve had this in my purse ever since I received it. It works well, and smells delicious.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I’d definitely buy a full size tube of this hand cream, and probably other products in this collection, too. (There are a few different scents to choose from, as well. The ‘Lemon & Cream’ one caught my attention.) I loved the fragrance, the formula, and the results- and for the price- you can’t go wrong.

Product # 3: Buxom Full-On Lip Polish in ‘Dolly’ ($19)

IpsyOctober20135

I feel like I’m in the minority of people who love that tingling, borderline painful feeling that lip plumping products give you, even though I rarely see noticeable results. I didn’t anticipate much with this suggestively named gloss, which applied in a sheer rose-nude tone that darkened with a couple of coats and smelled like cinnamon- but my lips did look a little fuller and very shiny while they warmed up and tingled. The gloss didn’t wipe off easily, either- and although it didn’t last as long as other lip colors I’ve worn in the past, it did stay put for a couple of hours before I had to re-apply.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. I have a lot of lip colors that are similar to this shade and last a little longer, but I liked the feeling and the finish of this particular brand, and I wouldn’t be opposed to trying it in another, possibly darker shade to break up and add a little diversity to the neutral colors I have in my collection.

Product # 4: Zoya Nail Polish in ‘Mason’ ($8):

IpsyOctober20136

IpsyOctober20137

I’ll never turn down a lovely nail polish shade, so when I saw this full-sized bottle of Zoya lacquer waiting for me when I opened this month’s bag, I was pretty giddy. This shade, called ‘Mason’, is from Zoya’s new Fall collection, “Cashmeres & Satins,” and dries to a beautiful, metallic, red-purple finish. The photos above are with two coats and a clear top-coat, and so far, there hasn’t been any wear and tear or chipping. This polish applied evenly and easily, and I love the deep hue that’s perfect for the season.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I actually adore this shade enough where I would pick up another bottle when I run out, but after browsing the “Cashmeres & Satins” collection online- there’s a few other shades I wouldn’t mind purchasing, too. I love the strength of this formula, as well. There’s no tip-chipping, even with all the typing I do- and the color compliments nearly everything I wear and/or accessorize with.

Product # 5: Ole Henriksen Truth Crème Advanced Hydration ($45)

I’ve always been weary of putting anything with a fragrance on my face. My skin can be pretty sensitive sometimes, and perfumed cleansers or moisturizers usually result in an adverse reaction that takes days to clear up. When I opened this moisturizer, which is supposedly good for anti-aging, brightening, and evening out skin tone with the amount of vitamin C it contains- I was a little weary- because it smelled strongly of oranges. At first, I only applied this moisturizer only in the morning for a few days, just in case it caused any sort of irritation.

I noticed right away how incredibly lightweight it felt on my skin, and how it didn’t leave any residue after I’d rubbed it in. My skin felt soft all day, and yes- it looked a little brighter- but best of all? It didn’t cause any kind of allergic reaction. From there, I started applying the cream at night before bed, too. Over a few days, my skin continued to look refreshed and bright, and I have yet to spot any kind of breakout.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This moisturizer worked surprisingly well. I got great results and the formula didn’t weigh my skin down or clog my pores. I didn’t even mind the citrus fragrance that much, either. It was quite pleasant.

Three products I thoroughly enjoyed, one I’m still on the fence about, and one I didn’t care for at all. Overall, I was very pleased with this month’s Ipsy bag. Well done.

GlossyBoxSeptember20132

September’s Glossybox, packed with essentials for the Fall season, had the delightful distinction from other beauty boxes by featuring five full-sized products, putting it’s value at over $100. Not bad, considering the subscription service costs only $21 a month. Of course, I wanted to try everything I received before I reached a final verdict- but that alone already had me impressed.

What I Received:

NIOXIN Diamax Hair Treatment

BCBG Max Azria Bon Genre Eau de Parfum Spray

Emite Makeup Eyelash Curler

Oceane Makeup Remover Pen

Be A Bombshell Eyeliner Pen in “Onyx”

GlossyBoxSeptember20133

Product # 1: NIOXIN Diamax Hair Treatment ($50)

With my hair being as course and as curly as it is- thickness has, thankfully, never been an issue or a concern for me. Even still, I was curious about this serum I’ve heard and read so many good reviews for, and massaged it generously from my scalp to my ends after a shower to see whether or not I’d notice any immediate results. As my hair dried, I saw some frizz and fly-aways near my hairline, and applied a light curl cream to keep everything in place before finishing my makeup and heading out to start my day.

By afternoon, my hair looked and felt fuller and more volumized- more so than usual. I wasn’t the only one who noticed, either. My co-worker remarked that my hair had more body to it- and that was only after one use! Like most treatments, you have to use it continuously for maximum results.

GlossyBoxSeptember20134

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I’m already very, very pleased with the results I’ve seen from this product with only a couple of uses so far, and I have a feeling that after a few weeks, my hair and I will be even more satisfied. This serum may not be ideal for just styling your hair, but it doesn’t seem to lose it’s thickening and conditioning power even when mixed with a light cream or mousse, so you don’t have to compromise volumizing results for being frizz-free.

Product # 2: BCBG Max Azria Bon Genre Eau de Parfum Spray ($75)

Out of the five products I received in September’s Glossybox, I was most excited for this BCBG perfume spray that came in a travel-sized tube that is ideal to put in my purse. This particular fragrance, a heavier (but still pretty!) mix of florals, vanilla, and sandalwood, is perfect for the Autumn and Winter months. It lasts all day without fading, so a couple of spritzes on your wrists/pulse points and you’re good from morning ’til night.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This fragrance is so intoxicating, and, dare I say it, sexy. I would absolutely add another bottle of this to my collection of perfumes.

GlossyBoxSeptember20135

Product # 3: Emite Makeup Eyelash Curler ($30.50)

I’ve only ever used an eyelash curler a handful of times in my life, and each time, I never noticed any dramatic results- at least nothing that a decent mascara couldn’t do for me without putting a contraption dangerously close to my eyeball. I tried this curler, which was well-made and came with replacement pads, a few times, but the results were still lackluster.

Would I Purchase?: No. I don’t think eyelash curlers are for me, period. I’ll probably end up gifting this to someone since it’s a good quality, and they might see better, more noticeable results than I did.

Product # 4: Oceane Makeup Remover Pen ($5.30)

When applying eyeliner, I have a tendency to screw it up. One eye comes out lined thicker than the other, I miss a spot, my cat-eye smudges with the wrong flick of my wrist, etc. and I’m left frantically looking for a cotton swap to try and fix it before it dries and I have to take it off and start over completely. This small, purse-appropriate-sized pen is a Godsend. With soft, replaceable tips, this product applies a small amount of makeup remover to the affected area without leaving the skin feeling greasy or making eye or lip makeup look runny.

This morning, as usual, I smudged a bit of my eyeliner, and quickly reached for this pen to see if it worked as well as the packaging suggested. Sure enough, my small error was gone in seconds and I was able to easily fix my eye makeup with less hassle than usual. Consider me sold.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is one of those products that should always be in your purse. It’s small, lightweight, reasonably priced, and ever so convenient for fixing little makeup mistakes or for touch-ups if anything falls out of place in the course of the day.

GlossyBoxSeptember20136

Product # 5: Be A Bombshell Eyeliner Pen in “Onyx” ($14)

The aforementioned botched eye liner I was using (and needed to fix) happened to be this fine, felt-tip, and fast-drying liquid-esque liner from Be A Bombshell, which looked and felt like I was lining my eyes with a Sharpie marker. The liner didn’t exactly apply smoothly for me. I had to go back and go over a couple of areas that looked patchy more than once before my eyes looked even, and although it’s highly pigmented and supposedly waterproof, I noticed that it smudged a LOT throughout the day. By the time I left work, I had a bad case of unintentional raccoon eyes.

Would I Purchase?: No. I feel like I say it every time I venture outside of my eyeliner comfort zone- but I’ll stick with my gel liners. This particular brand, although an interesting concept, just wasn’t for me. Not only that, but my concern would be how long it would last- considering it does not need to be sharpened or twisted up, and markers can sometimes dry out rather quickly.

GlossyBoxSeptember20137

Two products I didn’t like out of five full-sized products? That’s fine! The value of the three products I really enjoyed more than made up for my disappointment with the eyelash curler and eyeliner.  September’s Glossybox was a pleasant surprise. Major kudos.

My Autumn Essentials.

AutumnEssentials2013Banner

So far, at the beginning of every season this year, I’ve compiled a small list of some of the things I adore that get me through the cold (or hot,) temperatures and changing scenery. Autumn is no exception. I’ve already gushed, at length, about my love for all things Fall, but here’s a few specific odds and ends that make it even better.

AutumnEssentials20131

1. Starbucks’ Salted Caramel Mocha Lattes: The baristas at my local Starbucks are wonderful- not only because they know my name and my order without even having to ask anymore, but because they also knew that the Tuesday morning after Labor Day, I was coming in to dive headfirst into their Fall menu, and they were prepared for it. Screw pumpkin spice (which makes me gag.) I’m all about the salted caramel mocha lattes- hot, of course- 100%. Rich chocolate, creamy caramel, and a pinch (not an overwhelming amount) of salt, with a shot of espresso to get me going in the morning- or to give me a pick-me-up in the afternoon- or whenever I crave it, really. I’m so addicted to this drink that I’ve all but practically injected it directly into my bloodstream. It’s my absolute favorite until they break out the red holiday cups and the peppermint mocha & gingerbread lattes.

It tastes even better with one of Starbucks’ pumpkin & cream cheese muffins- another limited edition menu item I wish I could hoard in bulk amounts and enjoy all year long, and if you’re not into caffeine (or if you like me and should probably cut back on it-) Starbucks offers salted caramel hot chocolate, too- which is just as delicious and won’t give you the jitters.

AutumnEssentials20132

2. A Warm, Rich, Scented Candle: I usually have candles burning around my place year-round. In the Spring, I stick to light florals and “clean” fragrances, and in the Summer, I like to light citrus-y, tropical candles (think strawberry daiquiri  or coconut,) but I reserve my heavier, more musky and spicier scented candles for the Fall. I’ve been enjoying the above-pictured “vanilla chai” one from Yankee Candle (I’m from New England. Of course it would be a Yankee Candle) for the past couple of weeks. It fills my bedroom and adjacent hallway and rooms with this incredibly delicious, comforting vanilla and cinnamon fragrance.

Next on my list of candles to burn is “salted caramel” (surprise, surprise) and “cozy sweater.”

AutumnEssentials20133

AutumnEssentials20134

3. Bold Boots: I’m practically inseparable from my black Vera Wang knee-high boots. I wear them almost constantly (even when it’s not seasonally appropriate,) because they’re effortlessly chic and oh-so-comfy. I recently saw these colorful cowboy boots at the French Twist Boutique in Natick, and it was love at first sight. Not only are they comfortable, but the colors go with so many pieces from my fall wardrobe. It’s already started to get chillier outside, so I’ve been pairing these with tights, leggings, and, as pictured, skinny jeans. They’re just phenomenal.

AutumnEssentials20135

4. Darker Palettes: In the Summer, my makeup consists of mostly neutrals and bronze tones with the occasional pop of bright lip gloss or neon nail polish. In Autumn, I like to add darker, richer colors to my eyes, lips, and fingertips: deep violet, dark brown, charcoal grey, merlot, and, like my manicure pictured above, hunter green. I try not to wear too much of the palette all at once, since the “vampy” look never worked well for me- but minimal makeup with a vibrant purple smoky eye, or a wine-colored matte lipstick, as the focal point of the face? It looks stunning this time of year.

AutumnEssentials20136

AutumnEssentials20137

5. The Dependable Hoodie/Sweatshirt: Sometimes, just sometimes, when I’m running errands on colder days, or lounging with friends on a patio at night, or going for a walk to look at the leaves changing colors- fashion takes a backseat to comfort and I reach for the good ol’ hoodie/sweatshirt. It’s a staple in New England, and Fall hasn’t truly arrived until everyone breaks theirs out of their closets. My go-to is my Dropkick Murphys zip-up hooded sweatshirt. It’s about 2-3 sizes too big, but it’s beyond comfortable and keeps me warm in the early mornings and evenings.

“Autumn Essentials” not pictured: All the scarves ever in a wide variety of patterns and colors, oversized cozy sweaters and jumpers, flannel-lined leggings, a heated blanket with a good book to curl up and read under it, a beanie to keep your head warm and your hair dry, an umbrella for those especially rainy and dreary days, an entire day to go for the longest of long drives to look at the Fall foliage, pumpkin ale and hard apple cider, a stack of horror movies for a marathon with your friends as Halloween approaches, a good facial spray for on-the-go relief in chillier temperatures, a sturdy tote bag to bring for apple picking, and the will to carry on when Winter arrives again.

What are some of your “Autumn Essentials?”

Ipsy Bag: September 2013 Review.

September2013IpsyBag1

September2013IpsyBag2

September2013IpsyBag3

For September, ipsy went with a “Classic Beauty” theme, featuring products to create timeless looks that have been in style for decades: smoldering smoky eyes, perfectly defined liner, or a bold red lip. I’ve been playing around with the products these past few days, either using them all at once or mixing and matching- and while I didn’t exactly fall in love with this month’s bag, it was fun to doll myself up like Marilyn Monroe for a bit.

What I Received:

Chella “Ivory Lace” Highlighter Pencil

Starlooks Obsidian Kohl Eye Pencil

NYX Single Eye Shadow in “White Pearl”

Elizabeth Mott “It’s So Big” Volumizing Mascara

Cailyn Cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm in “Big Apple”

Product # 1: Chella “Ivory Lace” Highlighter Pencil ($18)

Typically when I highlight the inner corners of my eyes or under the arch of my eyebrows, I use a light/neutral matte eye shadow and blend accordingly. This pencil, which is less of an ivory color and closer to a fair skin-tone, was a surprisingly nice substitute. The pencil went on creamy, not scratchy, and was easy to blend with my fingertips. My eye area looked brighter, making me appear more awake (which proved to be a lifesaver after I stayed out nearly all night over the weekend,) and apart from that little miracle, the pencil was also nice for quick touch-ups around the rest of my face, too- i.e. covering freckles and/or imperfections.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This highlighter is mess-free and easy to carry, making it one of those products that fit conveniently into your bag in the case of what I call a “out all night- need a pick me up” emergency. Even better? You don’t need to use a lot of this pencil to get decent coverage and color- which means you get your money’s worth.

Product # 2: Starlooks Obsidian Kohl Eye Pencil ($12)

Despite this black matte eyeliner being advertised as “ultra-soft” and “creamy”, I found it to be stiff and almost painful to apply. Maybe it’s because I’m so used to gel liners, or maybe I just got a dud pencil that had somehow hardened up, but this pencil did NOT go on smoothly, even after I used a primer along my lid and lash line. It took a few attempts to get my cat-eye to look semi-even and not flaky, but the liner only lasted a few hours. When I checked a mirror about four hours after I’d first applied it, it had already started to smudge and fade down into the outer corners of my eyes.

Would I Purchase?: No. This eyeliner was a hassle to apply, and even more of a hassle to keep in place. I’ll stick to my gel liners, which glide on easily and don’t budge or require reapplications for 10x longer than this pencil did.

Product # 3: NYX Single Eye Shadow in “White Pearl” ($4.50)

September2013IpsyBag4

I’ve heard some good things about NYX. Their pricing is reasonable and their products apparently give great results. I was looking forward to trying one of their highly pigmented shadows in this month’s bag. To my dismay, I received a very bright, very shimmery silvery-white color. I haven’t worn a shade like this since I was in Jr. High (back when pink frosted lipstick was also a thing.) Even still, I applied it. The color, not very pigmented at all, gave my eyelids a sort of weird sheen that, even with primer, didn’t last all that long. By mid-day, the sheen was nearly gone, leaving just my eyeliner and mascara behind, and although I didn’t much care for the color in the first place- I wasn’t impressed with the formula at all.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. I wouldn’t try this color again, but I really would like to give NYX shadows a second chance after all the hype I’ve heard about them. I wouldn’t be opposed to spending the $4.50 to try a brighter, bolder shade to compare pigmentation and longevity.

Product # 4: Elizabeth Mott “It’s So Big” Volumizing Mascara ($19.99)

I’m a sucker for clever or cutely named cosmetics. This mascara was no exception. The name wasn’t the only thing that caught my attention when trying this product, but also the hourglass shaped brush. When I first opened the tube, I noticed the mascara itself seemed to clump on the bristles, which I should have taken as some kind of warning. It didn’t get much better when I actually applied it to my lashes. After two coats, my lashes were definitely thicker, and by “thicker”, I mean “stuck together.” I had to use a brush to separate my lashes and work the mascara through from base to tip- which, admittedly, didn’t make them look half bad when I was done.

Would I Purchase?: No. The finished look, after applying and combing the mascara through my lashes- wasn’t horrible– but it definitely wasn’t worth the extra steps and this mascara definitely isn’t worth the $20 price tag. I can achieve better results (sans-brush and with one coat) with other mascaras. “It’s So Big” fell flat.

Product # 5: Cailyn Cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm in “Big Apple” ($19)

September2013IpsyBag5

September2013IpsyBag6

The unusual and unique shape of this balm’s container, which features a built in brush handle, piqued my interest once I’d opened my ipsy bag and had me eager to try the deep, apple red matte shade- which seemed more daytime appropriate than other, brighter red lipsticks and lip balms I’ve tried in the past. This balm applied easily enough with the tiny brush, and gave decent color with only a few swipes across my lips- however, it didn’t last. After a couple of hours, the color had faded, peeled, and sort of feathered out to the edges of my mouth, making my lips looked more chapped and dry than anything.

Speaking of dry- this balm pretty much sucked ANY moisture out of my lips. After I’d carefully removed it, I had to continually apply copious amounts of chapstick, hydrating balms, moisture-rich lipsticks, and finally, Vaseline, for DAYS afterwards to get my lips to feel even mildly comfortable again. Even now as I write this, they still feel a little dry. Not as bad as a few days ago- but still dry.

Would I Purchase?: No. This lip balm was such a disappointment. As nice as the color was, it didn’t last long at all- and the extremely drying, cracked, and otherwise unpleasant feeling it gave my lips long after I’d removed it was horrid.

September2013IpsyBag7

With the exception of the highlighter pencil, this month’s ipsy bag was pretty underwhelming. I don’t expect to be blown away each and every month (especially for a $10 subscription) but overall, the September bag was a let down. I’m hoping October’s will be better.

GLOSSYBOX: August 2013 Review.

August2013GlossyBox1

August2013GlossyBox2

Let me just start this post off by saying this review almost didn’t happen. The August Glossybox, which I was actually supposed to get for free after redeeming my accrued Glossydots (a reward points system,) was briefly lost in the mail. After contacting both Glossybox customer support, and then the USPS itself- the package was eventually located at a facility in Pennsylvania and shipped to me immediately. Better late than never, of course.

The theme for this box, “Bohemian Summer,” included products fit for the transition from the last hot, humid days of Summer into the chillier, crisp early weeks of Fall, and included skincare, hair care, and makeup. I also received a cute denim pouch from GUESS as a bonus item, as well as a 30% off coupon that can be used in-store or on Guess.com. I’m in the market for some new jeans- so it should come in handy.

What I Received:

Sue Devitt Triple C-Weed Pressed Powder (*Full Size!*)

ModelCo Eyeshadow Duo in “Bronzed Goddess”

Anatomicals “Spray Misty For Me” Facial Spritz

Jelly Pong Pong Lip Blush (*Full Size!*)

Novex Brazilian Keratin Hair Treatment Cream

August2013GlossyBox3

Product # 1: Sue Devitt Triple C-Weed Pressed Powder ($28)

When it comes to setting powders, I’ve always preferred loose powders to pressed ones. From past experiences, loose powders give me better coverage and provide longer staying power for my makeup without looking caked on or chalky. However, when I’m traveling or in a rush, those neat little compacts can certainly come in handy. When I read that this particular brand of pressed powder was infused with green tea and vitamin C, both of which are good for my skin, I bit the bullet and decided to give it a try.

Unlike other powders I’ve received in the past, this one matched my skin tone perfectly. It applied evenly, smoothly, and gave decent coverage with a lovely matte finish. My skin looked and felt soft to the touch. Any shine in my T-zone was quickly covered- however- after only a couple of hours- that very same area began to look as though the powder had been caked on and I quickly had to reapply more to correct it.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. While I do still prefer loose powders, a product like this is great for quick, mess-free touch-ups. While I was disappointed with how quickly I had to re-apply more of the powder, I could see myself putting some of this on if I wanted to run out to do some errands without putting a full face of makeup on.

In other words, this powder is great for quick coverage for a short amount of time, but if you’re looking for something to give you consistent coverage for the whole day- skip this product.

Product # 2: ModelCo Eyeshadow Duo in “Bronzed Goddess” ($25)

Summer 2013 was definitely my season of neutral tones, and I was ready to go out this weekend to pick up a couple of violets, greens, and blues for my eyes for the Fall/Winter until I saw this shimmery eye shadow compact in my Glossybox, and opted to give neutrals a couple more weeks. Although it’s hard to tell in the photograph (and it was hard for me to tell in the packaging, as well,) this eye shadow duo- which includes a rich chocolate brown and a light cream color- is VERY sparkly. I actually did a double take after I’d finished applying it to one eye because the amount of sparkle caught me off guard. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s not like applying globs of glitter to your eyelid or anything. This shadow actually goes on easily without flaking or clumping together. After I adjusted to the sparkle, I thought it looked rather pretty on my eyes, especially out in the sunlight.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I’d actually love to try more color combinations of this formula of shadow. The colors in “Bronzed Goddess” were very nice, especially for the Summer, but I’d love to see the same amount of sparkle and pigmentation in a rich plum shade or an olive green sometime.

Product # 3: Anatomicals “Spray Misty For Me” Facial Spritz ($9)

As the temperatures begin to drop, keeping my skin hydrated against frigid climates definitely becomes a priority. I use stronger moisturizers, and more often throughout the day. Unfortunately, with my work schedule, stopping to take my makeup off, reapply moisturizer, and then reapply my makeup is simply out of the question. Enter facial sprays- which I am a big fan of- not only because of the results I get from them, but also because of the convenience. Whether sprayed on over makeup or on a bare, clean face- these spritzers offer instant cooling hydration to skin without ruining cosmetics or making your face feel greasy.

“Spray Misty For Me” from Anatomicals gave me all the aforementioned perks, and then some. Packed with lavender, peppermint, aloe, and witch hazel- this spray smelled amazing on top of being incredibly refreshing. Also, a but unrelated, but the packaging, which included a cartoon drawing of Clint Eastwood on the back, was very entertaining:

August2013GlossyBox5

See?!

Would I Purchase?: Yes! The refreshing, cooling feeling on my skin, the relaxing fragrance, and the quirky packaging had me sold on this facial spritz. This is my new “must have” in my purse for the Fall. It’s just a great product overall, and for $9 a bottle, you really can’t go wrong.

August2013GlossyBox6

August2013GlossyBox7

Product # 4: Jelly Pong Pong Lip Blush ($18)

Ever the lip color addict, this bold berry/red balm was the first product from the August Glossybox I tried. Although the packaging has this color listed as “cranberry,” it applied as a bright pink, almost neon purple tone on my lips- which, while sounding cool on paper, didn’t really suit my skin tone all that well. I looked washed out the few times I wore this, since it was so bright that it pretty much drained the rest of the color out of my face.

Longevity wise, this balm didn’t last at all. After a few sips of coffee, resulting in numerous lip prints all over the rim of my cup, and this balm’s color completely disappeared, as did it’s moisturizing benefits.

Would I Purchase?: No. I think I’ll stick to other balms I’ve used in the past, or moisturizer enriched long-wear lipsticks. Between the weird and unflattering color, the speed in which it vanished after I applied it, and the lack of long-lasting hydration benefits for my lips, this product was unfortunately a let-down.

Product # 5: Novex Brazilian Keratin Hair Treatment Cream ($4.99)

Keratin treatments at the salon where I typically touch up my red cost a pretty penny, so when I saw this otherwise inexpensive container of “Brazil’s #1 keratin treatment,” I was a little skeptical. The directions say to leave the pleasant scented cream in slightly dry hair, from root to tip, for three minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Not entirely sure how many miracles this could work in a mere three minutes, I left the cream on for five, and then rinsed- and what a difference! Once my hair dried, it felt softer, smoother, and looked a lot shinier. I was very surprised, to say the least. For $4.99 a jar, and with what I achieved after just one use (so far,) I think I’ve found the perfect, cheaper alternative to the expensive treatments I’ve paid for to get similar results in the past.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This would make an incredible weekly treatment for dry, damaged hair- especially in the colder months. Each one of my curls was nourished through and through and best of all- they stayed that way long after I applied and rinsed the cream out.

Despite the delay in receiving my August Glossybox, overall I was very pleased with it. The facial spritz and the keratin hair treatment cream were fantastic Fall finds, and the eye shadow and denim GUESS pouch were fun bonuses. I’m looking forward to continuing to use up what’s left of my samples, sans-lip balm, while I wait for my September box!

TeaTreeOilLate last week, and over the course of last weekend, I noticed I had a few bumps emerging on both of my cheeks and along my chin. I’m no stranger to the occasional breakout, especially when it gets closer to that time of the month, so I didn’t worry too much about it and proceeded with my usual daily skin care regime, anticipating it to clear up within a day or two.

By Tuesday morning, my left cheek had cleared up, as had most of my chin, but the bumps on my right cheek had multiplied, forming a cluster of red, painful-to-the-touch sores, of sorts. I could tell by examining it closely that it wasn’t the typical pre/post-PMS pimples, but a rash. I was having an allergic reaction to something, and immediately backtracked to when I had first noticed the bumps to try and figure out what could had caused it. The only thing I’m allergic to are certain kinds of pretzels (usually the small, crunchy ones found in trail mix,) but when I’ve ingested those in the past, it resulted in minor swelling of the skin, and some hives around my body that had lasted about an hour or so- and then I was fine.

The sores/rash were only on my face, which made me think it was the result of some of my skin care or makeup. Immediately crossing off the products I had purchased at Sephora recently, knowing that I would have experienced a reaction way sooner had it been because of any of those cosmetics- that left the contents of my recent ipsy bag. Although I don’t want to blame any particular product or brand, I believe I have the culprit narrowed down to either the NYX mosaic blusher, or the Michael Todd charcoal scrub- and have ceased using both samples until my face is fully healed and I can conduct more research to see exactly what went wrong.

By Tuesday night, after furiously washing and disinfecting my makeup brushes and applying calamine lotion to the affected area in a last ditch attempt to get it under control, I was feeling pretty down. The self-confidence aspect aside, it was the uncertainty that was driving me nuts. I didn’t know if it was going to get worse before it got better, or just keep getting worse until I had to have a Doctor or a dermatologist intervene.

The calamine lotion helped as far as drying out some of the rash and keeping it from hurting as much as it did, but the sores were still visible and didn’t look like they were going to be fading away anytime soon. After struggling to get my makeup to cover the patch of skin on my cheek the best I could, I headed to the office- only to find the above-pictured bottle of tea tree oil on my desk that my co-worker, hearing of and seeing (because seriously- it was impossible to miss) my plight, left for me to try.

I’ve heard a few things about tea tree oil, but had never considered trying it before. Something about applying oil to break-outs/allergic reactions had left me a bit perplexed, but my co-worker swore by it. Having recently experienced a reaction to a new foundation she’d tried, she applied some of the oil to her face at night, and by the morning, her bumps and breakouts were gone. After doing a little bit of research, it turns out tea tree oil isn’t just for skin. It apparently works wonders for hairs and nails, too.

Having nothing to lose, I applied some of the oil into my cheek with a cotton ball before bed last night. It should be noted that this stuff smells REALLY strong (“Brian, I’m gonna be honest with you, that smells like pure gasoline,”) so if you want to try it, just make sure you have a fan on or a window open to give you some ventilation. The oil tingles, but it’s bearable and only lasts a few minutes- and it absorbs quickly. There wasn’t any kind of residue on my pillowcase when I woke up this morning.

As far as the condition on my cheek- the rash was SIGNIFICANTLY smaller, dryer, and less red this morning- which was a huge relief. I was able to apply my makeup without issue, and there was no further irritation on my skin as the day wore on. When I came home, I did the same thing- washed my face and applied more oil. I’m hoping that within a couple of days, the remaining couple of bumps will be gone completely.

I’m amazed (and thrilled) with the results from the tea tree oil- and even more so at the speed in which I saw those results. I really think having a bottle of this- and make sure it’s 100%- would be a beneficial addition to any medicine cabinet or first aid kit. It may not be suitable for every day use for skin or hair, but it definitely comes in handy when you need quick relief- as was the case with the reaction on my cheek.

I’m not being paid by any tea tree oil companies to write about their product or anything. I just wanted to share my experience because this whole week-long ordeal has been hell on my skin and just stressful overall, and should anyone reading this find themselves in a similar dilemma- natural oils, especially this kind-  are a pretty easy, inexpensive solution that may work as well for you as it has been doing for me so far.

Ipsy Bag: August 2013 Review.

IpsyAugust20131

IpsyAugust20132

For those who read my Beauty Box reviews, you may have noticed there hasn’t been a BeautyArmy post since June. After another disappointing selection window in July, I decided to cancel my subscription and instead sign up with a different service. I’ve heard a lot of good things about ipsy, and figured I’d try my luck with them. For $10 a month (with free shipping!) you get five deluxe-sized, and sometimes full-sized samples, delivered in a cute little makeup bag instead of a standard box. The bag also comes with a card that offers coupon codes for each of the samples included, so if you want to buy any of them, you can get a certain dollar amount of percentage off of your purchase.

Although you can’t select your own samples the way you can with BeautyArmy, I’m already impressed with the price and the brands affiliated with ipsy.  I recently received my first bag with a back to school theme entitled “Glamour Academy.”

What I Received:

Michael Todd Jojoba Charcoal Gentle Exfoliating Facial Scrub

NYX Mosaic Powder Blush

Pacifica Alight Multi-Mineral BB Cream

Pixi Beauty Lash Booster Mascara in “Blackest Black”

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in “Anarchy”

Product # 1: Michael Todd Jojoba Charcoal Gentle Exfoliating Facial Scrub ($18)

I am always on the lookout for a decent facial scrub, and was eager to try this blackish-grey colored, bead-filled exfoliant. The color and texture of this product sort of reminded me of a mud mask. Lightly scented, this scrub gently sloughed away the dead skin cells on the surface of my skin, as well as the pesky dirt and residual makeup that sometimes finds itself trapped in my pores. When I rinsed my face, my skin felt smooth, refreshed, and thoroughly cleansed without feeling dry or “stripped” the way some other, harsher scrubs tend to make me feel.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! I can easily see this facial scrub becoming a part of my daily skin care regime. It worked well for me each time I used it, and it’s reasonably priced- which is a huge plus.

IpsyAugust20133

Product # 2: NYX Mosaic Powder Blush ($7)

When it comes to blush, I’m pretty much stuck on my NARS ‘Orgasm’ blush stick, but this pretty patterned compact caught my eye when I first opened my ipsy bag. Containing both matte and shimmery colors, this product is meant to give you a natural flush and a hint of a glow, and is advertised as being suitable for every skin tone. When I first swirled my brush on this palette and applied it to the apples of my cheeks, I was a little alarmed at how dark it looked. It took some blending to make it look a little more natural on my skin, but the finished look was quite nice, and it stayed in place all day with help from my finishing powder.

Would I Purchase?: Maybe. I’m still madly in love with my NARS, but this product wasn’t bad, and I wouldn’t be opposed to trying it in a lighter shade to avoid having to blend it as much as I did the first few times I wore it.

Product # 3: Pacifica Alight Multi-Mineral BB Cream ($16)

I knew I was going to have an issue with this BB cream the second I poured some out of the tube. This product was oily on contact, and had an unnatural yellow tint to it. Even still, I applied it to my face, hoping for the best. Needless to say, it didn’t work out. This particular formula gave me zero coverage, and yet still managed to make my skin look almost radioactive with the yellow undertones and excessively shiny with the minerals and moisturizers it’s loaded up with. I had to scrub it off and go back to my usual foundation, instead.

Would I Purchase?: No. This product was just not for me at all. If and when I do decide to go back to using BB creams, I’ll stick with my Dr. Jart formulas since they match my skin tone and give me better coverage. This BB cream was far too greasy and poorly tinted for my liking.

IpsyAugust20134

Product # 4: Pixi Beauty Lash Booster Mascara in “Blackest Black” ($17)

I like my lashes to look fake. Thick, long, dark- the works. I’ve been using Too Faced’s “Better Than Sex” mascara for a few weeks now and have really liked the results it’s given me so far. That doesn’t mean I won’t try other brands/types of mascara, though. I gave this tiny, mint-colored tube a shot, and while the results weren’t horrible- they weren’t exactly what I look for in a mascara. My lashes did look a little longer, but not necessarily thicker or darker, despite the “Blackest Black” name.

Would I Purchase?: No. That’s not to say this is a bad mascara. It’s not. It IS nice and the shape of the brush allows for an easy, mess-free application, but I think it’s better suited for people who want a more natural look to their lashes as opposed to a dramatic one.

Product # 5: Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in “Anarchy” ($22)

I think this might be my favorite sample in my August ipsy bag. This petite tube of lipstick packed one hell of a punch. In a shockingly bright and vibrant shade of pink, not only did this highly pigmented formula glide on easily and evenly, but it stayed in place all day- and when I say all day- I mean ALL. DAY. Long after my morning coffee, long after my lunch hour- and well into the late afternoon. I didn’t have to reapply once, and I didn’t notice the color start to fade until dinner time. This lipstick was hydrating, didn’t flake, and stayed creamy and glossy the entire time I had it on.

Would I Purchase?: Yes! This is seriously fantastic lipstick. As much fun as I had with this hot pink, I would love, love, LOVE to try this formula in other, more subdued shades for the Fall. I’ve been browsing the Urban Decay website and so far I’ve added “Strip,” “Protest,” and “Naked,” to my must-have list.

Overall I’m very pleased with my August ipsy bag. There were a couple of products I didn’t exactly fall in love with, but I did find a couple of things that I really enjoyed- and it didn’t break the bank for me to try them, either. I’m looking forward to seeing what this beauty box/bag service has in store in the future.
